We will be at receiving end – NANS, NAPTAN .May affect NUGA By Adesina Wahab As the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, meets in Lagos this weekend, tension has been heightened on campuses across the country over the possiblity of the lecturers going on strike once again. Checks by Sunday Vanguard showed that a number of universities already preparing for semester examinations are very apprehensive that the exercises may be affected. For instance, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, has slated the first semester examination for commencement by the last week of this month, but students and lecturers are now waiting for the outcome of the meeting of the National Executive Council, NEC, of ASUU to know what would be the next line of action. READ ALSO:Enugu council polls: We are 100% behind you, PDP assures Ugwuanyi A 300 level student of Geology in the school, who gave her name as Grace, said with the situation of things whether the exam would start ot not later this month is dependent on the outcome of the meeting. “The timetable by the school management is that we would start our first semester exam in two weeks time and end by mid March. But if ASUU goes on strike that may no longer be possible. We all know that if the strike starts, the process of calling it off would take some time. “Our appeal is that the two sides should consider our interest. We spent nearly a year at home because of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and if another strike starts now, that will add more weeks or even months to our stay in campus,” she said. On its part, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has said the looming strike is another attempt to return the students back to the streets. It also added that it would be another distraction to education in Nigeria. In a statement on Saturday, signed by the South-West Coordinator, Comrade Stephen Tegbe and the Zonal Public Relations Officer, Comrade Emmanuel Esiegbe, it also faulted the government for neglecting to do the its duties as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution. “Education in Nigeria in recent times owing to the negligence on the part of the government has the opposite of the educational objectives enshrined in chapter two(2) section eighteen (18) of the Nigerian constitution. “It is no longer news that the Academic Staff Union of Universities is currently planning to embark on a fresh strike owing to the inability of the Federal Government to fulfill the promise made to the union on the payment of members’ arrears. The union, despite the plea from parents, insisted on speaking to the Federal Government in the language they understand best and the last line of action (strike), an attempt that will send our colleagues in universities back home, enlogate their stay in their respective institutions and keep their age at disadvantage. “The Zone D Leadership of NANS under the leadership of Tegbe Stephen Fiyinfoluwa in the interest of Nigerian students across the nation is hereby pleading with our kecturers to kindly bear with us as we move on to ensure that we join them to consult and consolidate actions to fast track the process of the payment. By extension, we want the Union to consider the fact that we will not only be losing out for staying home, but incessant industrial actions will keep bringing down the value of our education and the quality of the graduates we will be producing. “In a similar vein, we are sending a strong warning to the Federal Government against toying with our future by keeping us out of school because nothing changes the fact that if the government officials in Abuja are getting their salaries, nothing should stop our lecturers from getting paid as at when due. “Specifically, we demand the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency convene a meeting with the leadership of ASUU and discuss the best way to go about the payment. We hope the government responds as demanded to avoid demonstration from countless Nigerian students and may we remind the Federal Government that the popular#EndSARS protest has ASUU strike as one of the remote causes. “As we progress to ensure our universities remain open and the academic calendar keeps running, we are urging Nigerian students across campuses to join us in all actions because collectivism is the key and resisting this is in tandem with the goals of keeping the future generation safe from such menace,” the statement read. Also speaking, the National President of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigena, NAPTAN, Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, called on the lecturers and the government to consider the plight of students in their actions and inactions. Danjuma, who spoke in a telephone chat, said in the event of a strike by the union, the parents and students would be at the receiving end. “If they go on strike, students would stay longer than necessary on campus and parents who are eager that their wards finish school on time would also wait further. ASUU should give more room for the government to negotiate with them. We know that what they are asking for is in the interest of all, but caution is still the word. “President Muhammadu Buhari should do everything possible to let our children remain in school and get the best of education,” he stated. Meanwhile, there are fears that the National University Games, NUGA, slated to hold next month at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, may be affected if the lecturers go on strike. If the strike option is chosen by the union, campuses would be shut down and to get students mobilised for preparations may be difficult. Also, some of the lecturers are also expected to train the students for various sporting events to be competed for during the games. Recall that the union is demanding the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement signed by the two parties, the replacement of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, IPPIS, with the University Transparency and Accountability System, UTAS, the payment of promotion and salary arrears, an end to the proliferation of universities by state and federal governments without adequate funding among others. Oyo State has recorded 28 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the latest figures released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Thursday night. The 28 cases in the state were among the 339 figures recorded in 18 states on Thursday. The latest figure has increased the total number recorded in the state to 190. The recent daily increase in the number of people who tested positive to COVID-19 has created fear among residents, though the majority of them still go out without the use of face masks against the directive of the government. This nonchalant attitude of some of the residents had prompted the state COVID-19 Task Force to intensified sensitisation programme in the Oke-Ogun area of the state on Thursday, where it threatened to sanction erring members of the public that fail to wear a face mask. Speaking at Igbeti and Kishi communities, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, declared that failure to wear face mask would soon attract penalties. Olatubosun, who chaired the media committee of the task force, said defaulters of the guideline would be prosecuted and appropriately punished. He advised residents of the state to ensure that they maintain physical distancing, adhere to restrictions on religious worship, ensure the washing of hands with soap and use of sanitiser. source https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/05/covid-19-oyo-state-records-28-new-cases/ |

•We sleep with at least six men a day •COVID 19 affected our business •I came to hustle in Lagos – 13-yr-old By Evelyn Usman They were of different sizes, ages, heights, and complexion but bonded by the oldest trade on earth- prostitution! They were usually seen sitting in front of shanties along the railway line, Abattoir in the Agege area of Lagos. At the approach of any man, they beamed with smiles, revealing dark-stained teeth, suspected to be the result of the long usage of marijuana. They would beckon on their male visitors, especially those visiting for the first time, and at the same time posed sexually, competing for their attention. For the visiting men who already had steady ladies, they would walk straight into the particular shanty which served as a brothel. Activities of these commercial sex workers have been going for some time unhindered, until Wednesday night, when the Police in Lagos discovered that the girls were victims of human trafficking. Surprisingly, they were all discovered to have been trafficked from Akwa-Ibom State to Lagos. While some of them admitted being aware of what they were coming to do in Lagos, others claimed they were deceived with employment promises. Exposed Crime Guard gathered that one of the girls, Mary Effiong, 19, was declared missing in Akwa-Ibom, five months ago. Apprehension set in after efforts by her family to find her proved abortive. Her sister, Nwanna Edet Effiong, was said to have reported her disappearance to the Police. In the process of searching for her, news reached her family that she was seen around Agege area of Lagos. When informed, the Police in Lagos swung into action and tracked her to Abbatoir, where her indulgence in prostitution was exposed. Surprisingly, she was discovered not to be alone in the act. Twenty-three other girls, all from Oron, Akwa-Ibom, some of who were teenagers, were also involved. To the amazement of the police team, one of the girls was discovered to be 13 years old. Meanwhile, back home in Akwa-Ibom, some of the rescued girls had been declared missing, as they reportedly left home without informing their families. The girls were identified as: Precious Okon Edet, 21; Offong Mary, 19; Favour Ime Bassey, 22; a 17-year-old; Success Edet, 20; Ndifreky Okoh, 24; Queen Okon, 21; Alice Edet, 20; Blessing Esin, 21; Mary Etim, 20; and Faith Sunday, 25. Others were: Sonaj Beauty, 23; John Agnes, 13; Miracle Effiong, 23; Oriong Patience, 20; Effiong Blessing, 20;Vivian Edet, 23; Amanda Effiong, 14; Joy Timothy, 21; Edet Patience, 20; Sunday Glory, 20; Goodness Effiong, 19; Sandra Effiong, 20 and Gift Emmanuel, 27. Information at Crime Guard disposal revealed that some of those who patronized the ladies were criminals, who either passed the night with them after the operation, or spent some time with them before going for an operation. Some of their customers were also said to be pickpockets and hoodlums who hide under the cover of the dark to harass passers-by along that route. Services During interrogation, some of the girls revealed that they slept with at least six men a day, depending on the number of men that came visiting. One of them, said, “The least number of men we slept with a day was six depending on the number of men that came daily. Our customers were okada riders, malams (abokis), and even traders. Some of us have regular customers. For me, I don’t like ‘abokis’ because some of them don’t take their bath. Sometimes I allowed okada riders but only those who smell nice. I may not be rich but I like people who don’t have body odour”. Another girl, Effiong, said, “we used to collect N1,500 for the service. It is a standard charge. But we had to bring down the amount to N1,000 because of COVID-19, when customers were no longer coming. We were paying N1000 per day for the shanty. Unfortunately, the agents would collect the money we made in a day”. When asked what she came to do in Lagos, the 13-year-old girl simply said, “I came to hustle”. Four suspected traffickers arrested The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Elkana Bala, who confirmed the rescue of the girls, said, “ four male suspects who were members of the trafficking syndicate were arrested. They are :Okon Felix, 32; Michael Etim, 22; Victor Asuquo, 35 and Goodness Ebiefie, source https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/05/girls-trafficked-from-akwa-ibom-for-prostitution-in-lagos-open-up/ |

The returnees had staged a protest over a Twitter post by the commissioner that one of them died of coronavirus. Abayomi, who made the promise when he visited the returnees, also urged them to comply with the isolation protocols. Disclosing these on his Twitter handle, the Commissioner said: “I paid a visit to Nigerian returnees from Dubai currently under isolation @orchidhotelagos. “The visit afforded me the opportunity to directly interface with the returnees and to be acquainted with their concerns. “I made a promise to the returnees on behalf of @followlasg that their concerns would be addressed as much as possible. “I, however, advised them to comply with isolation protocols issued by @DigiCommsNG. I reiterated the need for strict compliance with rules as that remains.” source https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/05/3rd-covid-19-patient-puts-to-bed-at-luth/ |

By Ugochukwu Alaribe, Umuahia Over 40 youths suspected to be from the northern part of the country who were stowed away in a Dangote truck were intercepted at the Umudike Junction of Aba Road, Umuahia, Wednesday, by operatives of the Traffic and Indiscipline Management Agency of Abia State, TIMAAS. Vanguard gathered that TIMAAS operatives in the area received intelligence that a Dangote truck carrying the youths was approaching the area from the Akwa Ibom State axis of the border and mounted surveillance. On sighting the truck, the officers flagged it down and inquired from the driver what he was carrying. The driver responded that the truck was empty but when the officials climbed the truck, they discovered over 40 northern youths lying on the floor of the enclosed cargo space of the truck and invited policemen to arrest them. The truck and its human cargo were taken to the office of the State Commissioner of Police, Mrs Janet Agbede, who interrogated the driver and the stowaways and directed policemen to escort them back to Akwa Ibom end of the border from where they entered the State.
