DAY 6 - 01/04/21 Between 80 -85% of the seeds have sprouted. There are signs that some would soon emerge. Since the start of sprouting, two days ago, the plants have more than tripled in size.... They grow very very fast.
|
noeloge82:I'm glad I can learn from this, and show my results here. Like I stated earlier, I've not grown Cucumber in a long while (6/7 years), I was focused on other Crops and Livestock.... And if I recall correctly, I used several varieties: Alpha-Beta, Marketer (Not Market-more) and Murano. The result was encouraging. |
okoroemeka:Thanks. I'm up for the challenge, and will be in touch shortly. Hopefully, this seed can be used for the Pilot Phase II. The results will be published here live. |
zxcvbnmlkjhgfds:Ash (wood ash) is good sources of macro and micro nutrients for your plant, they are rich in potassium, and also help in conditioning your soil (are alkaline). |
Still today, DAY 4 - 30/03/2021 Took this picture this very afternoon. Just minutes ago... Cucumber spreads its leaves and drinks in its first sunlight. The ministry is moving to the permanent site ![]()
|
DAY 4 - 30/03/2021 4 days after planting, Cucumber sprouts begin to emerge....
|
Barbsamiin:I'm based in Delta, so I got mine at Agbor. Agric Office. You can get yours wherever you're based. Just ask around for Sellers of Hybrid seeds. Produced by Premier or Technisem or any other. |
PLANTING - 27/03-2021 Sowed my seeds on the 27th of March. Two seeds per hole. Two seeded holes per bags. 30 bags. Expecting a total of 60 plant stands. I watered before planting. And watered again at night. So far, watering has been very economical because there is less wastage. I make only two trips with my Watering Can (of about 15 Liters).
|
I chose to farm in polythene bags to better manage my limited water resources (Rainfall is currently unreliable). For this Pilot phase I, I'm using 30 bags. I left room for expansion into a Pilot phase II.
|
LAND PREPARATION I did all farm work myself (ably aided by my Muse ). So, I have zero labour cost. Used left over bamboo from Yam farm of the previous year. Bought Polythene bags at Onitsha Main Market @ #1200 for 100pcs. Cleared my small site on the 25th of March (Day). Completed bamboo trellis on the 26th of March. Started the previous night. Filled bags with a mixture of Loamy soil and ash, same day 26th (Evening).
|
I bought a Sachet of Cucumber Seeds @ Agric Office, Agbor, Delta. It cost me exactly #700 for this sachet. Cucumber Variety: Market More
|
So, I've decided on adding Cucumber to my farming activities this year, 2021. It's been years since I last grew Cucumber (6/7 years ago), and even then, I did it at a small scale (garden) level for personal consumption and limited sales. This year, I want to try something special, and I'll be starting with a Pilot Phase, to test run some of my ideas, and train some of my farmers. This is what I've done so far.

Nyamuriflathead:Cocoa farming is still lucrative. The main problem in Nigeria is Value Addition. |
Nyamuriflathead:I do. It simply means collecting sperm cells from male animal and inserting them into the female animal's reproductive organ. The process is a little different for every class of animal. For example, artificial inseminations in fishes (Induced breeding / Hypophysation) requires the male to be sacrificed, and milt sac (sperm sac) collected; while the female (gravid / sexually mature) is injected with hormones to stimulate egg production.... and so on. |
Nezzjnr:Hi. Sorry about the late response, I've been busy on a project. I'll soon write an comprehensive article on Cassava Business, soon. From Farming, to Garri processing, and even export of Dried Cassava. If you need more info, urgently, reach me directly on the Contact above. Thanks. |

phantom24:Risk is subjective. Everyone perceives risks differently, and what might be high risk to you, might be low risk to another, and vice versa. The difference in perception, most time, is down to knowledge: How much do you know about the venture? What information do you possess? Do you possess the skill and experience required? Another factor that can determine how risky a venture is to you is Value: How important is the venture to you? What do you stand to lose? What is at stake? We actually define our risks, and calculate how much we can risk. Now, is Poultry Business the riskiest Agro Venture? Absolutely Not. Which then is the riskiest? This would be the Agro Venture with the highest stakes (financial or otherwise) and the least information available. So... You Decide. Remain Ever Blessed. |
yanabasee1:Fish Farming is my personal favorite.... Not because I make the fish pepper soup to screw anyone oo ![]() The funny thing is that once you start farming fishes, your appetite for eating fishes will reduce to almost zero... I'm talking from my experience. Fish farming maybe capital intensive, but it is alsopossible to start small and grow the business. Setting up a Hatchery Facility gives you an edge over other farmers without one, as you can select the best broodstocks for breeding and best fingerlings to stock in your fattening ponds. Also, you would have a secondary stream of income through the sale of fingerlings and juveniles to other fish farmers. |
JidennaJason:You have the Right Mindset. |
phantom24:There is no business venture without risk. In fact, the greater the risk, the greater the reward. What is important to thrive is taking calculated risks. This means having the right information, and taking the right actions. Poultry Farming is absolutely not the riskiest agribusiness to venture into. Not even close. |
JidennaJason:That's a good agribusiness to venture into. Last I checked, there was a ban on the importation of poultry products into Nigeria. This means you have a ready sizable market for your produce (meat and egg).... And you can choose to do something special, by adding value, and creating a unique product. |

3 Factors that can significantly affect the profitability of your Agribusiness: • Management practices: Skill and experience of the manager, farming system and technology employed (mixed farming, irrigation, greenhouse, RAS, hydroponics), quality of inputs (seeds/seedlings, feeds/fertilizer, pesticides etc), and management efficiencies (minimizing wastages, turning waste to wealth). • Scale of production / Rate of turnover / Volume efficiency: Understanding your Farm Economics to produce at a scale that maximizes Production Efficiencies, and avoids Diminishing Returns. • Value addition: This factor is so important that it could impact your profits by over 200%. Add Value to your raw farm produce by processing into finished goods (eg Oven-dried Fish, Plantain Chips, Cassava Flour, Tomato Paste, grape juice, grilled Pork etc), and packaging into branded materials.
