The Federal Government, Tuesday, vowed to punished accordingly the perpetrators of violence in the bye-election conducted last weekend in Rivers state.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Bar. Solomon Dalung, who blamed the violence on politicians, who refused to play the game according to the rules, described the crisis as a display of premitive political culture.

The minister attributed the death of one corps member: Samuel Okonta from Delta State to the inordinate ambition of politicians, making it clear that “under the administration of change, this impunity will never be celebrated.”

Dalung was speaking at a condolence visit by the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmmud Yakubu to the Headquaters of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the death of one Corps member at the poll, in Abuja.

Corps member Okonta Samuel, who until his demise served at GCSS Ukpeliede, was shot dead by some unknown gunmen in Ahoada West Local Government Area.

Consequently, the NYSC, yesterday, spat fire over the death of Samuel and others corps members, who sustained various degree of injury, describing the murder as barbaric.

Dalung said; “I want to use this opportunity to appeal to Nigerian politicians that in playing the game, officials for the match and spectators are not players, I observed that each time we play this our political game, our tentackles and anger is extended to wrong person.

“Politician aspired to hold public office becuse they want to develop Nigeria, in doing this they are talking of protecting the life of every Nigerians. So, it is very bad and terribly that we cannot conduct ordinary election without conflict and crisis, just to protect our interest and innocent people will lose their lives, if they kill all Nigerian who do we rule over? Are they going to rule animals?

“At this point I am. calling on all major actors in the crisis in Rivers State to respect human life, they should remember that there is one person calls God. They should stop ending people’s life because of their tall ambition.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Tuesday released the text of Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis address to over 35,000 IPOB members who gathered last Sunday at the Vatican City for the weekly Angelus, saying that Pope has warned their oppressors, the government and Nigeria Military and their agents to repent, stop killing Biafra agitators or face the wrath of god that will be catastrophic.

The text of the Catholic Pontiff address which was made available to Vanguard by the IPOB Media and Publicity Officer, Mr. Emma Powerful, disclosed that the Pope advised the Biafra agitators and the crowd that gathered at St Peters Square from the balcony of the Apostolic Palace to be patient in all they are doing, that Gods patience towards their oppressors is without limit but the time for change of heart from their oppression is now.

IPOB quoted the Pontiff to have said that “it is never too late to convert an oppressor to change from his evil activities, including murderous activities, but it is urgent, it is now, let them begin today to change from their oppression and killing of innocent people through all sorts of violent means, including the jack boot of the military. According to the pro Biafra group, said the Pope spoke on “invincible patience,” explaining how God’s “unyielding concern for sinners” should provoke patience in us, asking if we have you thought of God’s patience, have you even thought of his unyielding concern for sinners, how this should provoke patience among people, including governments, instead of killing people on slightest provocation or no provocation at all, let alone people who are protesting against unfair treatments or for something they feel is their rights.”

IPOB said the Pope told them that God does not permit tragedies to punish sins, rather, Jesus uses warnings that sinners will perish if they do not repent, adding that if the oppressors of peaceful agitators like the Biafra agitators in Nigeria fail to repent the wrath of God will be catastrophic against them. The Pontiff according to IPOB, welcome the need to firmly and unreservedly focus on negotiations and dialogue between governments and agitators all over the world including Biafra agitators and the government of Nigeria, like done in Syria which has brought the current ceasefire in the country, involving government and rebel forces, which has entered its fourth day.

“I invite all to pray so that this window of opportunity can give relief to the suffering people and agitators and encouraging the necessary humanitarian aid, and open the way to dialogue and much desired peace” he said.

ABUJA–The presidency has said that president Muhammadu Buhari never at any point during his 2015 presidential campaign made a promise of paying N5, 000 monthly stipend to the unemployed graduates in the country. It however stated that there was a provision of half a trillion Naira in the 2016 budget which was mapped out to execute six social safety net programmes. According to the presidency, one of the programmes was a conditional cash transfer where the federal government would pay N5,000 monthly to the vulnerable and extremely poor Nigerians.

Giving clarification to the matter which had become controversial following president Buhari’s reversal of the promise, the media aide to the Vice President, Mr. Laolu Akande who spoke to State House Correspondents in Abuja on Monday, stated that the payment of N5, 000 to the less privileged contained in the budget would be implemented. Akande also stated that about of 500,000 graduates who would be integrated into the teaching system would be paid N5, 000 token while on training.

His words: “The budget for 2016 which has been submitted to the National Assembly has made an allocation of half a trillion naira, the first time in the history of this country’s budget where you have that huge chunk of money allocated for social investment.

There are six social safety net programmes. One of them is the conditional cash transfer where government is going to pay N5, 000 monthly to the vulnerable and extremely poor Nigerians. That promise stands. “The President never promised to pay unemployed graduates N5, 000; the President never made that promise and the government never made that claim that it will pay N5, 000 to unemployed graduates.

The programme for unemployed graduates is the direct creation of half a million teaching jobs so that they will be trained; 500, 000 unemployed graduates will be trained to teach and they will be deployed to teach, while they are looking for their career paths or jobs. That still stands! “In addition to that, there is also a scheme to train 370, 000 non-graduate youth for skill acquisition and vocational training. During the time of that training, they will also be paid. “So the President did not say that he would be giving unemployed graduates N5, 000.

The N5, 000 monthly stipends which is already in the budget is for the vulnerable Nigerians and the extremely poor. Once the budget is okay , one million extremely poor Nigerians will receive N5, 000 monthly.”

Kyon appeared before the Commission yesterday and told the Commission that he was still unable to meet Zakzaky to prepare for the appearance of the IMN and pleaded for two weeks’ adjournment to enable him get access to his client. He claimed the Directorate of State Services, DSS had refused him access to Zakzaky. Counsel to the Nigerian Army, Mr. Abba Audu, however opposed the two weeks adjournment arguing that it was untenable, going by the lifespan of the Commission. Similarly, counsel to the Commission, Usman Yunus Ustaz, SAN, objected the plea, saying that two weeks was too long to be granted since the Panel had six weeks to conclude its sitting. Ruling on the matter, Chairman of the Commission, Justice Muhammadu Lawal Garba, said: “We are adjourning till February 29, to enable you get access to your client, and whether you get access to him or not, you have to report back to the Commission so that we can continue with the proceedings”.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the IMN, Ibrahim Musa told Vanguard IMN still stood by its earlier demand as condition for its appearance before the Commission.

Former Senate President and winner of the February 20 Benue South Senatorial District re-run election, David Mark, has appealed to his main challenger, Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to join him in moving Idomaland forward.

The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain disclosed this during his maiden press conference after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared him as the winner.

“I want to thank all sons and daughters of Idomaland because this victory is for us, not for David Mark. I also want to urged those whose political interest might have clashed with mine to join hands with me in moving Idomaland forward,” he said.

He declared that election is over and all efforts must be geared towards the betterment of the people. “You (media) heard the result before me because I was sleeping when it was declared. I want to thank the support of the people and promised that I will not disappoint them. The youth stood by me”. “The election is over and I am ready to serve Idomaland again,” he added. Dismissing calls by the APC that the election should be declared inconclusive, Senator Mark said his major concern is on how to ensure that Idomaland is better than it was in the past, adding that strength is in unity.
