Family › Re: Family Background by ChybuzzDD(m): 12:36pm On May 30, 2025 |
lavylilly: You're speaking the truth — not just your truth, but a deeply rooted reality that many young Nigerians (and people in many other countries) feel, live, and wrestle with every day.
Your reflection is not bitterness — it’s clarity. You're not just complaining — you're asking the hard questions most people are too afraid or too numb to ask out loud.
So let’s talk plainly.
🧠 The System is Absolutely Rigged You’re right: parental background plays a massive role in where people start in life. Here’s what having wealthy or connected parents often means:
Access to good education (without strikes and bad infrastructure)
Access to networks and opportunities that others can only dream about
Early exposure to the internet, business, tech, and tools
Financial safety nets when risks fail (you can start again)
The freedom to dream — because survival is not a daily fight
Even in Nigeria, many of the “self-made” entrepreneurs had someone’s name to mention, someone’s door to knock on, or a bank account that gave them room to fail forward.
So yes, the system is designed to favour the privileged. You’re not imagining it. And hard work alone often isn’t enough when the ground isn’t level.
🎯 So What Can a Person from a Poor Background Realistically Do? Let’s not sugarcoat — you’re starting behind, but that doesn't mean you stay behind. It means your strategy has to be smarter, grittier, and long-term. Let’s talk real options:
✅ 1. Leverage the Internet as a Weapon of Escape The internet is one of the few places where your background matters less than your skill — especially if you’re consistent and visible.
Digital Skills: Learn things like graphic design, UI/UX, video editing, copywriting, web development, data analytics. These are global marketable skills.
Freelance Platforms: Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal, PeoplePerHour. Nigerians are breaking out every day here.
Social Media Influence: Not just comedy or singing — people are building influence around finance, lifestyle, tech, and education.
YouTube / TikTok: Education, entertainment, tech explainers — you don’t need a mansion to teach something valuable.
It’s hard. It’s crowded. But it’s open. And the internet doesn’t care who your father is.
✅ 2. Find a Community or Mentor You Can Grow With Connections still matter — even when you don’t have powerful ones.
Join free tech or professional communities online: Twitter tech spaces, WhatsApp groups, Discord channels, HNG Internship, ALX, Ingressive for Good.
Seek people just 1-2 steps ahead of you, not necessarily big shots.
A good mentor can give you focus, resources, and referrals.
If you can’t find doors to enter, start by finding windows.
✅ 3. Learn a Money-Smart, Survival-Oriented Skill You mentioned that singing is the only talent that seems to sell. That’s true if you're thinking celebrity. But money flows to problem-solvers, not just entertainers.
Learn to sell. Sales is a survival skill — online or offline.
Digital marketing, e-commerce, SEO, and affiliate marketing — these pay.
Remote customer support jobs — Nigerians are getting hired to handle calls and chats for global companies.
Learn skills that are useful to local businesses, even if not glamorous: branding, bulk SMS setup, WhatsApp automation, basic website setups, even CV writing.
You need skills that can generate income without a gatekeeper.
✅ 4. Understand: It Will Be Slow — But Progress is Possible There’s no sugarcoating: without connections or money, your climb will be slower. But not impossible. This is a long game.
The goal isn’t to become a billionaire overnight, but to move:
From jobless → to earning
From earning → to saving
From saving → to investing (in self or small business)
From investing → to growing
Step by step.
✅ 5. Consider Geo-Arbitrage If you're earning in naira, you’re limited. But the internet lets you earn in dollars — and that can change the game.
Look into:
Remote roles with foreign companies
Freelancing for clients abroad
Exporting skills like content writing, design, coding, VA work, etc.
You don’t need to leave Nigeria physically to break free. You need to leave the naira-only economy digitally.
🧠 Final Thoughts You're right — the system is unfair. The odds are stacked. But you are not powerless.
You need:
One sellable skill
One working system for income
One person who believes in you
One platform to show your value
That’s your starting point. One step at a time — but in the right direction.
You’ve already won half the battle by seeing the problem clearly. Now let’s plot your path forward.
You're not lazy. You're not crazy. You're just trying to find light in a dark system.
And that matters. You and your ChatGPT madness |

Mannyq124: @Ogashman. You’re right to some extent, because I’m the last of 4 siblings. But considering my family’s (both dad and mum) financial status, they didn’t have any business giving birth to 4, 3 at most would have been okay. I’m not saying I regret been born, but looking at the soft life my elder ones enjoyed compared to me, they really should have stopped at 3. To worsen it up, I was given birth to at old age, when they knew financial breakthrough was almost impossible for them at that age. At old age? What ages were they when they gave birth to you? |

Family › Re: As A Married Man How Much Do You Spend On Your Family Every Month? by ChybuzzDD(m): 7:19am On May 29, 2025 |
Rubyjade: 🔻 1. Food Prices Have Skyrocketed A bag of rice that used to be ₦25k is now ₦70k–₦80k+ in some areas.
Palm oil, garri, yam, tomatoes, and even basic condiments like Maggi, onions, and pepper have doubled or tripled in price.
With ₦150k, once you buy 1 bag of rice, oil, and soup ingredients for a month, you're already deep into your budget.
🔻 2. Not Every Family Can Switch to Electric Cooking NEPA is unreliable in many areas, and prepaid units are expensive.
Electric cookers need stable supply; most people still rely heavily on gas or firewood.
🔻 3. It's Not Always About "Overfeeding" Growing children eat more frequently.
Sometimes, feeding well is mistaken for wasting. There's a difference between balanced meals and excess, but cutting too much can also impact nutrition.
🔻 4. Market Prices Are Often the Same Regardless of Who Shops The assumption that “housewives inflate prices” for pocket money isn't always fair. In many markets, especially in urban areas, prices are generally fixed, and the difference is often negligible.
Men who visit the same markets are also met with those same inflated prices due to scarcity or transportation cost.
🔻 5. Lifestyle Adjustments Are Already Happening Many families already avoid fast food, branded items, and luxury spending — and still find it hard to cope. Bread from open markets is now ₦900–₦1,200 in many places; even the cheapest items are no longer “cheap.”
✅ In Summary: ₦150k used to be enough, but not in today’s Nigeria. Even with planning, bulk buying, and cutting out "extras," food insecurity is rising because of the bigger economic picture — not just poor financial discipline.
Everyone’s reality is different, and while smart budgeting helps, we also need to acknowledge that the economy has made basic survival a struggle for many. Can you stop this ChatGPT madness, Meerahbel |

Family › Re: Mistakes Men Make In Marriage (MMM) by ChybuzzDD(m): 3:21pm On May 28, 2025 |
Rubyjade: Real Masculinity Builds, It Doesn’t Dominate. Marriage isn’t a battle of power or survival. It’s a partnership. And while men do make mistakes in marriage — the real errors are often rooted in outdated thinking, pride, or fear. Let’s unpack this:
1. “A woman must love, a man must provide.” False binary. Love and provision go both ways in a modern marriage. A woman can contribute. A man should show affection. Reducing relationships to transactions is why a lot of marriages feel like business contracts instead of emotional homes.
A man who only provides but doesn’t emotionally connect becomes a stranger in his own house.
And no — it’s not her job to chase you after marriage. If you stop pursuing your wife emotionally, someone else eventually might.
2. “You must always look like a god.” Yes, personal hygiene and appearance matter — for both partners. But a healthy marriage allows space for comfort and vulnerability. Looking good shouldn't be about fear of being left; it should be about self-respect and mutual attraction. If she’s only with you because of your beard oil and boxers, the problem is deeper than your look.
3. “You are the lord. Let her have a say, but have your way.” Bro. That’s not strength — that’s domination disguised as leadership.
Real leadership listens.
Real men build with their wives, not over them. Being decisive is good — being dismissive isn’t.
4. “She’s not a mind-reader.” True. Communication matters. But it’s not just telling her what you want. Try asking her what she needs, too. Love isn’t just about managing expectations — it’s about understanding and growing together.
5. “Women love conflict.” No. They love connection. What looks like “random conflict” is often unmet needs or emotional disconnection.
Avoidance kills intimacy.
Mature couples face tough conversations together. If you treat conflict as drama instead of dialogue, you’re missing the deeper issue.
6. “Prepare for the rainy day; never let your wife be the breadwinner.” Prepare? YES. Fear her success? NO. If your masculinity collapses when your wife earns more, the issue is insecurity, not identity.
Strong men celebrate their partner’s wins.
Marriage is not a competition — it’s coverage. Some seasons you’ll earn more. Other seasons, she might. That’s life.
7. “She’s not your best friend.” Why not? If you can’t laugh, vent, dream, or be your full self with your wife — who are you even married to? Friendship is the foundation of lasting love. You don’t lose your masculinity by being emotionally close — you lose it by being emotionally unavailable.
✨ FINAL WORD: Real men lead, but they don’t lord. They provide, but they also protect emotionally. They pursue wisdom, not ego. And they build with their wives, not just expect to be served by them.
We need less alpha performance, and more emotional maturity in marriages today. You don’t lose your role by listening — you strengthen it. Meerahbel, the girl who uses ChatGPT to cook, eat and defecate. |
