Car Talk / 10 Signs You Need A New Car by Cieno: 2:46pm On Aug 29, 2016
Changing your car isn’t as straightforward as replacing your toothbrush or purchasing new office supplies. Whether you need a new car is usually hard to objectively determine. Cars cost significant sums of money and there’s sure to be some mulling over whether it’s worth it. If you’re rich enough to afford a fleet of cars, then this piece probably isn’t for you (You’re welcome to still read it though).

Beyond any financial considerations, cars are placeholders for a lot of emotions and there’s bound to be an emotional connection with your car at some point. This may make parting with it in favor of a new one slightly difficult. If you find yourself in any of the situations you’re about to read though, it may be time to finally go through with your long put-off plan to turn your car over.

One Too Many Roadside Repairs
A single random roadside repair of your vehicle may be passed off as just a minor issue and unless it prevents the closure of a major business deal will only cause a little annoyance. However, frequently repairing your car on the roadside after it’s broken down is a sure sign that vehicle needs to go. Not only will it consistently leave you frustrated, it is likely to be the cause of a many missed opportunities.

In Need of a New Engine
The engine is the heart and soul of your car and if it’s given out to the point of no repair, you should consider getting a new car altogether rather than replace it. A car is never as durable or efficient once you replace the engine. Also, purchasing a quality new engine is usually costly and it’s more financially prudent to purchase a new car altogether.

Poor Fuel Consumption Efficiency
Fuel in Nigeria is somewhat expensive and on some occasions scarce to find. It is therefore paramount that your vehicle consumes fuel efficiently with each drive. If you have to stop at the gas station more often than the average motorist, it is essential that you trade in your fuel guzzling monster for a more efficient ride. You’ll also be helping the environment.

Check Engine Light is Permanently On
Every vehicle has a “check engine” light that reminds the owner to take the car to an auto-repair shop in order to have his engine examined for any faults. Once the problem is detected and fixed, the light automatically turns off. A check engine light that is permanently turned on when there are no apparent faults usually means that total breakdown is imminent. Better to change the car when it’s still functional and can fetch a decent price on the market to contribute to a new one.

Chassis Needs a Complete Overhaul
It’s easily the most noticeable part of your car and if your chassis looks like it should belong in a scrapyard, then that car should end up in a scrapyard. It behooves any car owner to have a vehicle with dings, rusted edges and several dents in their vehicle. The car is due to be replaced and you need to stop “managing” something that looks like the wreckage of the Titanic.

Mileage is Way Long
Cars much like most products have a best before mileage after which they are more prone to breakdown and require additional maintenance. Once your odometer hits 6 figures, plans for a replacement should be set in motion at once. Avoid using your car to the point where it has no salvage value due to excessive mileage.

Minimal Safety Features
New models of cars being made feature an extensive range of safety technology to reduce damage during accidents and prevent death. Most older model vehicles lack most of this technology and as a result can prove to be death traps in the event of a collision. Place a premium on your life and swap that old jalopy for a new ride complete with up-to-date safety technology.

Too Many Patch Ups
A car mechanic will often improvise and make quick fixes in order to keep a well worn car going. They might even patch some parts with duct tape to hold them together. However, once duct tape and patch ups are becoming the norm rather than an incredibly rare occurrence, you shouldn’t need to be advice to dump that piece of scarp metal for an actual car. In fact, the first time you need duct tape for repairs in your car, it’s most advisable to change it immediately.

It’s No Longer “Valuable
A car shouldn’t be something you’re willing to leave in a dangerous neighborhood with the doors unlocked because you’re sure no ones would even consider stealing it. As soon as you consider it not “valuable” enough to be stolen, then the sad truth is you most definitely need a new car. Don’t drive around a worthless car cause you don’t want to invest in a new one. Don’t be Ebenezer Scrooge.

Your Friends or Kids Would Rather Walk
It says an awful lot about your ride if your friends or kid would rather walk than be seen in it. If your offer to give a ride is consistently turned down, you don’t need a sign from God to know the car is way past its best days. It’s served you well but now it has to go so your loved ones can share a trip to the mall with you again.

If you find yourself in any of the situations listed above but you don’t yet have the funds to purchase a new ride, you can simply start saving now.

Health / 10 Benefits Of Swimming You May Not Know About by Cieno: 2:37pm On Aug 29, 2016
Swimming is the perfect exercise. You get benefits of an aerobic workout without damaging impact on joints, and it can be done by the very old and very young. It is utilized by athletes to stay strong and keep fit when recovering from injury, and there is no fancy equipment needed—just you and the deep blue. However, swimming has many more benefits that those obvious advantages seen on the surface; its improvements to overall health go much deeper. So, let’s take a big breath, and dive in!

1. Swimming Improves Muscle Definition and Strength
Swimmers gain muscle strength throughout the entire body. Where runners see muscle build in their legs, swimmers utilize more muscle groups to move through the water. While the legs kick, the arms pull. As the back reaches and rotates, the stomach tightens to power the legs and stabilize the core, making swimming one of the best aerobic exercises to give you a total body workout. Just look at Michel Phelps’ fit physique if you need inspiration!

2. Swimming Builds Up Bone Mass
For years, researchers scoffed at the idea that swimming affected bone mass. After all, only weight-bearing exercises were able to achieve this benefit, right? Not according to research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. Because there are ethical reasons to avoid in-depth bone examination on humans, the study put rats into three groups: running, swimming, and a control group with no exercise stimulation. While running still showed the highest increase in BMD (Bone Mineral Density), the swimming group also showed benefits over the control group in both BMD and femoral bone weight. While more studies are needed, these new findings show that previous research dismissing swimming’s bone benefits may need to be revisited.

3. Swimming Helps You Stay Flexible
Swimming requires you to reach, stretch, twist, and pull your way through the water. Your ankles become fins and are stretched with each kick as you push off against the liquid pressure. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still stretch on your own, but repetitive stretching found in your various strokes also helps with flexibility.

4. Swimming Reduces Inflammation
While swimming’s cardiovascular benefits of strengthening the heart muscle are common knowledge, research also indicates aerobic activities, such as swimming, reduce inflammation that leads to atherosclerosis build-up in the heart. Reducing system-wide inflammation leads to lessened disease progression in many other areas as well, so expect to hear of more benefits as the research progresses.

5. Swimming Holds Its Own for Calories Burned
Everyone knows that swimming is a great way to burn calories, but most don’t realize it can be just as efficient as jumping on the treadmill. Depending on the stroke you choose and your intensity, swimming can burn equal or greater calories than running. Additionally, you don’t have to worry about sweat in your eyes. For example: for 10 minutes of swimming you burn 60 calories with the breast stroke, 80 calories with the backstroke, 100 calories with freestyle, and an impressive 150 with the butterfly stroke. For perspective, running a 10-minute mile burns around 100 calories. Therefore, a strong 30-min butterfly speed session can burn 150 more calories than running a 5K in the same time frame.

6. Swimming Can Improve Exercise-Induced Asthma
Nothing is as frustrating as trying to exercise and being unable to get your breath. Unlike working out in dry gym air or braving seasonal pollen counts, however, swimming allows you to breath moist air while you train. Not only does swimming help alleviate asthma symptoms, studies have shown that it can actually improve the overall condition of the lungs. In a recent study, a group of children that completed a six-week swimming program saw improvements in symptom severity, snoring, mouth-breathing, and hospitalization and ER visits. These benefits were still noted a year after the swimming program ended. People who don’t have asthma benefit too, as swimming increases overall lung-volume and teaches good breathing techniques.

7. Swimming Lowers Stress and Depression
Love that natural endorphin kick? While many talk about a runner’s high, swimming can bring about all those feel-good emotions too. In addition to the happy hormones, you also can feel a relaxation response similar to yoga. As I mentioned previously, swimming stretches your body constantly. Combine this with the deep rhythmic breathing, and you can experience a relaxation rush that’s very unique to the sport. Swimming is also calming and meditative, as the sound of your breathing and the water rushing by helps you focus inward and drown out all other distractions. This lowers stress and depression naturally. Research also shows that swimming can reverse damage to the brain from stress through a process called hippocampal neurogenesis. So, if you feel like you’re drowning emotionally, jumping in an actual body of water may be exactly what you need to find your feel-good feet again.

8. Salt-Water Swimming Can Be a Beauty Treatment for Skin
When I switch from pool swimming to open water workouts in the ocean, I noticed a vast improvement in my skin over time. Swimming regularly in salt water helps the skin retain moisture and detoxify to promote new cell growth. You will be surprised how smooth and healthy your skin feels after an invigorating ocean swim.

9. Swimming Can Make You Smarter
Of course all exercise is great for the mind, but can swimming actually make you smarter? Research from Australia focused on kids who took swimming lessons compared to a control group of non-swimmers. The results showed that kids who regularly participated in swimming were able to master language development, fine motor skills, confidence, and physical development sooner than the control group. Swimming may also help with math skills, as swimmers regularly calculate the meters swum in sets or interval drills to put their adding and subtraction skills to work.

10. Swimming May Just Lengthen Your Life
While all exercise can produce greater health and longevity, studies point to swimming as one of the best choices for doing so. Researchers at the University of South Carolina looked at 40,547 men, aged 20 to 90, for over 32 years. The results showed that those who swam had a 50 percent lower death rate than runners, walkers, or men who didn’t exercise.

Feeling motivated to grab those goggles now? The water’s great! Jump on in!

Fashion / A Guide To Creating A Work Wardrobe by Cieno: 2:18pm On Aug 29, 2016
If you’re fresh out of college, odds are your wardrobe is filled with mostly jeans, urban wear, t-shirts and polo shirts (unless of course you went to Covenant University). This might pose a problem when you want to get dressed on Monday for that new office job. Your leather jacket and ripped jeans will hardly send your boss the right message on your first day and it’s time to hit the store for some new wears. Going shopping for clothing items can often prove to be tedious when you don’t know what you want or need. Yet, it can become a fun activity when you have a clear plan of action in mind. Here’s a guide on how to create a work wardrobe in time for your new job.

Start off with the Basics
The key pieces in your work outfit should be neutral colors that you can blend effectively in a variety of ways. The most important thing is shopping for a new wardrobe is how many combinations you essentially obtain rather than signature outfits. Black, Navy blue, grey, tan, cream, white are great choices and because they don’t jump out at people, it easy to pass repeating certain pieces. Suits are also a great way to get multiple pieces – a blazer, trousers and sometimes vest – at a much cheaper prices than getting them separately. The bulk of your shopping funds should be centered on getting this base items; it’s better to have one shoes and five dress shirts than two shoes and two shirts. Here are some suggestions you can aim for:

Men: 3-4 jackets, 3-4 pair pants, 5 button-front shirts, 5 pair dress socks, 3-4 ties, 2 pair of shoes.
Women: 2-4 jackets, 3-4 skirts, 5 tops (button-front shirts or solid-color knit tops), 2 twin sets (matching tank and cardigan), 5 pairs dress socks and/or pantyhose, 2 pair of shoes (low heels, or flats if you can’t wear heels at all).

Strike a Balance
It’s crucial to not forgo quality in order to get a bargain. Remember that not only are you gonna use some of these items on a regularly basis, your outfit also speaks volume in your office. You want to appear smart, and well-dressed without being over the top or making your boss wonder if they pay you too much. Shoes and bags should be of the highest quality within your budget; sometimes that means they’ll be expensive and at other times you might be able to get great quality at knock-down prices. A quality pair of well-worn Italian shoes will serve you better than some knock-off from Yaba. Trendy items which are not likely to last in your wardrobe but can spice up your outfit can be gotten as cheap as possible. Don’t cheat on quality, yet find ways to strike a balance between your budget and the level of varying quality available to you.

Accentuate Your Outfits
Get accessories – like ties, socks, scarves, etc. – in much bolder colours since the base is neutral. You can play around a bit with patterns and designs while sticking to solid neutrals as your base. Adding too many neutral colors to your outfit will give it a dull washed look and you should always look to make your outfit pop. A touch of turquoise can often give life to a white shirt and black suit more than a grey accent would.

Don’t Throw It All Out
There are some stuff currently in your wardrobe that would easily fit in to a business casual look so don’t be so quick to send all of your old stuff to the back row. Incorporate as much of your already existing items of clothing into your work wardrobe within the guidelines of your office dress code. A grey or blue leather shoe can oft be died black and prove useful.

Be Clear about What You’re Going to Buy
You may need to write a list but it is important to be exact about what you want to buy so you don’t get sidestepped or distracted by other things when you’re at the market. No matter how good it looks, if you don’t need it or it isn’t on your list, don’t buy it. Don’t compromise on the quality items you picked out in order to get multiple pieces of a sub-standard similar item. It may be fun to shop but this one has far-reaching consequences if it goes wrong so stick to the plan.

Do Some Recon Work
Don’t just go to the market and buy the stuff the first you go. Take time to compare prices and check out the places that have quality at affordable prices. Ask friends and family about stores where you can get the best deals and don’t be worried about going to the less heralded or less posh places. It’s more important to buy good looking wear than it is to buy from a good looking store. You don’t have to scout your entire city but make sure you have multiple options and can compare price and quality.

Good-luck at your new job. Don’t be afraid to switch up your style as your income grows but always remember not to wear too expensive items or you might have the higher ups reconsidering your pay scheme.

TV/Movies / 4 Things You Should Do When Going To The Cinema Alone by Cieno: 3:56pm On Aug 17, 2016
Seeing a movie at the cinema is almost always subconsciously thought of as a social activity. As soon as that new blockbuster movie appears in cinemas, you’re already pondering how to get your girls or guys together for a movie outing. Conversely, you may want to turn a new movie in cinemas into a some private time with your boo and even if movie dates are not the most romantic dates, it’s always great spending time with that special someone.

It may seem awkward at first planning a movie trip by yourself you might even be worried that you’d not enjoy the solo experience as much. You need to stop dreading going to the cinema all by yourself and start looking forward to that alone time in the cinema. With the help of a few tips, it should prove quite the opposite.

Choose a Movie you’re Sure to Absolutely Love
It doesn’t have to be the movie that’s had its trailer on Twitter for months and your friends don’t even have to rate the movie highly; this is all about you. There’s also the added incentive that since this cinema experience will be centred on the movie, you definitely want to absolutely enjoy the movie.

Buy Extra Snacks
You don’t have to worry about anyone eating your popcorn or taking a sip of your Coke so feel free to spoil yourself a little. Get that extra-large bag of popcorn you didn’t want to have to share with bae and a 1.5 litre Coke to go with it. You want to make sure you don’t have to make a snack run when the movie’s getting good.

No Review until the Movie is over
Forget all you read on Rotten Tomatoes or IDMB, you won’t have a better opportunity to form your own opinions about than you go watch it by yourself. There’s a catch though; don’t try to assess the movie before it’s even began. Immerse yourself in the movie and savour every last detail. Those dastardly reviews can come to mind afterwards when they should matter little to what you think of the movie.

Choose a Timeslot When the Cinema’s going to Be Less Crowded
There’s the off chance that you’ll be self-conscious about entering and sitting in the cinema hall by yourself so you may want to choose a timeslot where the cinema will has a little to no crowds. That way it’s easier for you to enter and slink into your seat without drawing any attention to you. The evening slot just before the late movies start to show is usually a great choice. Late night movies are also bound to have smaller attendances.

There’s a lot of joy from going to the cinema by yourself and until you decide to actually do so, you’re unlikely to fully understand the pleasures of alone cinema time. You get to fully express yourself without worrying about what your movie partner has to say and you can fully immerse yourself in a fulfilling movie experience!

O.J.: Made in America

A 7.5 hour documentary about O.J. Simpson? After The People vs. O.J. Simpson just a couple months ago? What more could possibly be said about the most discussed legal case of the last 25 years? A whole lot, apparently. With uncommon depth, unflinching candor, and surprising empathy for the man himself, director Ezra Edelman turns Simpson’s life and times into a full-blown Shakespearean tragedy, and shows how a community was so literally and metaphorically beaten down by its own police force that they would not only overlook a mountain of physical evidence to find a man innocent, but would turn him into a folk hero in the process. This is the sports documentary by which all future sports documentaries will be measured, and an instant classic

The Meddler

One of the most delightful romantic comedies of the year, The Meddler doesn’t focus on twentysomethings working in New York media. It focuses on two people in their sixties after they’ve lived so, so much of their lives. Starring (still the hottest woman ever) Susan Sarandon as Marnie, a recent widow who, after inheriting a boat load of money moves to Los Angeles essentially to bug her depressed, recently single, screenwriter daughter, Lori (Rose Byrne). Lori’s not having Marnie’s constant calls, texts and drop by visits. So Marnie adapts as she does best, meddling in other people’s lives. This leads her to a chance encounter with Zipper (J.K. Simmons), a retired cop with whom she bonds. Lorene Scafaria’s film feels like a Nora Ephron/Nancy Meyers hybrid parfait—full of sweetness and light and fizzy romance—but also explores how aimless one can feel even in the later part of life, trying to grasp onto some purpose for being around.

The film follows the Avengers struggle as the U.N. tries to keep them and their actions under control while the villain causes trouble at the U.N. and with the Winter Soldier to lead Tony Stark to the ultimate truth about his parents’ death

Barbershop: The Next Cut

Truth be told, many moviegoers thought they were done with the Barbershop series. Who even remembered that it was turned into a short-lived Showtime sitcom starring Omar Gooding? So it was surprising that Ice Cube and the gang got together (alongside Common and Nicki Minaj) to tackle the ongoing issues in the city of Chicago for another installation. With both a beauty salon and a barber shop in Calvin’s establishment, The Next Cut’s banter is all over the place, with jokes about social media and Obama being mixed with more serious issues of gang violence and police brutality. Instead of the film riding the humorous wave though, this time it actually gets serious, delving deeply into the heart of the community of Chicago, and one shop’s aim to do something about it. While the middle tends to drag a bit, the movie as a whole is a welcome return to the franchise.

For instance, when a new customer recharges N100, he/she gets N600 total airtime value instantly, while a recharge of N1000 gives N6000 instant total airtime value.

For a N100 recharge, customers get N100 in their main account, an additional bonusN250 for calls to all networks and N250 or 50 MB data while the N1000 recharge gives customers N1, 000 in the main account N2500 for calls to all networks and N2500 or 500 MB data.

Customers are expected to recharge their lines by dialling *126*pin#. The airtime value in the customer’s main airtime has no validity expiry; while bonuses have seven day validity. Customers can continuously roll over their bonuses if they recharge their lines within the seven day validity of their existing bonus.

Commenting on SmartConnect 2.0, Chief Commercial Officer, Airtel Nigeria, Ahmed Mokhles, said the product reaffirms Airtel’s commitment to offer a unique telecommunication experience and amazing opportunities to new customers on the network. He noted customers can enjoy extensive hours of calls and browsing on the new package.

Mokhles further explained that, as the name implies, Smart Connect 2.0 gives smart connectivity and choice to customers on the network to keep everyone connected to their families, friends and loved ones.

“As Nigeria’s leading network in innovation, Airtel is committed to exploring new opportunities that will enrich the lives of telecoms consumers and empower them to do so much more in their professional and personal lives,” Mokhles said.
