A Kaduna State High Court on Friday issued a warrant of arrest against the Chairman of Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, for contempt.

The warrant of arrest was issued by Justice Mario Mohammed after the chairman had ignored several summons by the court in a suit between Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufa’i and Today’s publishing Company Limited, and one other.

A warrant form obtained directed that police personnel and authorities should arrest the CCB Chairman and produce him before the court on February 13, 2019.

Earlier, Today Publishing company, the publisher of The Union Newspapers had filed application requesting the court to subpoena CCB Chairman to produce assets declaration of El-Rufai in court after several failed efforts it made to obtain it from the CCB.

Justice Mohammed granted the approval based on the application filed by Counsel to The Union Newspapers, Mr J.N. Egwuonwu (SAN), during the continuation of defence at a previous sitting.

Egwuonwu represented by Hiifan Andrew Abuul had written an application to the court to subpoena CCB to tender the asset declaration of the Governor before the court.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the governor had gone to the court over a report carried by the newspaper in which it allegedly stated that he had declared N90 billion in his CCB assets declaration form.

Nairaland / General / Woman Exposes Husband Who Sleeps With Her For Ritual In Ibadan by clarkdave4real: 5:42pm On Dec 19, 2018
Chief Ademola Odunade, the President of a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, on Wednesday dissolved a three year-old marriage between Tawakalitu Adeoye and Hakeem over threat to life and ritual making.

Odunade held that the court does not joke with any issue that had to do with life, hence the need for the dissolution.

“It is also obvious that there is no more love between Tawakalitu and Hakeem as a result of their differences.

“In the interest of peaceful living, the union between the duo has ceased to be.

“Custody of the three-year-old child produced by the union is awarded to Tawakalitu and Hakeem shall pay a monthly allowance of N5,000 for the child’s upkeep in addition to been responsible for her education and other welfare”.

Narrating her ordeal, Tawakalitu, a fashion designer who resides at Academy area of Ibadan, said that her husband had stylishly embarked on a marathon sexual intercourse with her with the intention of using her for ritual.

“My lord, if I had listened to my parents’ advice that I should not enter into any marital vows with Hakeem, maybe life would have been pleasant with me today.

“It all began when Hakeem started requesting for sexual intercourse from me every morning and night without any particular reason, an act which he was initially not used to.

“Firstly, he takes his bath and then rush me to bed, sleeping with me.

“Each time he finished with me, I felt weak, subdued, restless and completely shattered physically and psychologically.

“Until I made the discovery, Hakeem had planted a charm (Tira) under my pillow for two good weeks without my knowledge and I had laid my head on it.

“Then, I reported him at Eleyele Police Headquarter in Ibadan, but he pleaded with the police to prevail on me not to implicate him.

“He also told my relatives that I lied against him and that I must retract the statement of which I accused him of trying to use me for ritual.

“Worst still, Hakeem derives pleasure in turning me into a punching bag at any slightest opportunity.

ASUU Strike: Lecturers meet Nigerian govt delegation

The representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday staged a walkout from a meeting with a federal government delegation, a Premium Times report has shown.

The government delegation was led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

Despite the walkout, Mr Ngige expressed optimism that the strike would soon be called off.

The university lecturers embarked on an indefinite strike on November 4, demanding improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government.

The National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, led the union’s delegation to Monday’s meeting.

The ASUU delegation arrived at the ministry at exactly 5:00 p.m. but no member of the federal government delegation was around as at this time.

The government delegation led by Mr Ngige arrived at exactly 6:00 p.m.

The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, was absent at the time the meeting started.

Before the walkout and at the start of the meeting, Mr Ngige told the lecturers that he hopes a consensus on most of the issues is reached at the end of the meeting.

He assured the union that attention will be paid to three critical demands, which are salary shortfall, university revitalisation and earned allowances of lecturers.

After the walkout by the lecturers, they did not brief journalists on what caused their action.

Mr Ogunyemi, who led ASUU’s delegation to Monday’s meeting, refused to make any comment.

Nairaland / General / Shocker: Policemen Shoot Passenger For Pleading On Driver's Behalf (video) by clarkdave4real: 4:05pm On Dec 17, 2018
It has been reported that a young man was shot in the leg, allegedly by a policeman, when he joined the driver of a bus he was travelling in, and other passengers, to plead with the policeman who had detained them at a checkpoint in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
A video of the incident was shared by a Facebook user, Martina John (Tinasoft) late on Sunday. She revealed that the shooting happened on Friday, at 4:15pm while she was travelling to Port Harcourt.
Martina claims that policemen had stopped the bus she was travelling in at a checkpoint in Rumuoji before Choba, and asked the driver for his driver’s licence, which he provided. However, he was unable to provide the tinted glass permit, claiming that his employer didn’t give him.
At this point, Martina says, one of the policemen at the checkpoint threatened the driver of the bus. That was when the passengers came down to plead with the policeman to let them go.
The policeman shot the young man in the leg, Martina claims. They later took him away in their vehicle without informing other passengers where they were taking their victim.

Nairaland / General / 76th Birthday Special: Why We Love Buhari - By Femi Adesina by clarkdave4real: 3:44pm On Dec 17, 2018
Home Unlabelled 76th Birthday Special: Why We love Buhari - By Femi Adesina
76th Birthday Special: Why We love Buhari - By Femi Adesina
CLARK DAVE December 17, 2018
The Presidential Special Adviser to on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has penned an interesting piece to President Muhammadu Buhari who turns 76 today.

Buhari and Femi Adesina

“That’s him, that’s him,” the two old women, wrinkled and bent with age, exclaimed. You could see wonderment and fulfillment in their eyes. And as if on cue, they both began to cry.

It was in Bauchi earlier this year. President Muhammadu Buhari was visiting to commiserate with the people on the ravages of windstorm, which had destroyed many homes and other property. As he waved at the tumultuous crowd, the two women saw him, perhaps for the first time in their lives. And so great was their satisfaction, their pure joy, that they began to cry.

That is the kind of emotion that courses through millions and millions of Nigerians when they behold their President, the honest man (mai gaskiya), the man of integrity, man of accountability, one whose word you can take to the bank. The man who loves them, and they love and trust in return.

Don’t misunderstand me. Not all estimated 196 million Nigerians share this sentiment. Not possible. There are those who are passionately opposed to the President. They are a very vocal minority, who abhor his integrity, hate his sense of accountability, and even want him dead. But we are not talking about those who Fela Anikulapo-Kuti called “opposite people.” On this day of his 76th birthday, we are talking of the teeming masses who love Buhari, and who can go to the ends of the earth for him.

Why do they love Buhari? Or better still, why do we love Buhari? The old, the young, men, women, boy, girl, the strong, the infirm. Why do we love the tall man from Daura? For many reasons.

I have said it before, and say it again. It will take a while before Nigeria will see another political leader with such ability to pull an unsolicited and uninduced crowd like Muhammadu Buhari. Anywhere he goes, he doesn’t have to procure the crowd. They turn out in their numbers to see and hear him. They will trek from Africa to China, walk from Cape Town to Cairo, all to see, hear and cheer the man they love.

Why?

Nairaland / General / George Bush, The 41st President Of The United States Died On Friday Night At His by clarkdave4real: 7:37pm On Dec 01, 2018
Former US President George H.W. Bush has died at age 94 in Houston, according to his spokesperson.

Born into privilege and a tradition of service, Bush was a son of a senator, celebrated World War II combat pilot, student athlete, Texas oilman, Republican congressman, national party chairman, pioneering diplomat and spy chief. After his own 1980 presidential campaign came up short, he served two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president before reaching the pinnacle of political power by winning the 1988 presidential election, soundly defeating Democrat Michael Dukakis.

After losing the White House in 1992, Bush became a widely admired political elder who leapt out of airplanes to mark birthday milestones. Emphasizing the generosity of his soul, he forged a close -- and unlikely -- friendship with Democrat Bill Clinton, the man who ended his presidency. When Parkinson's disease mostly silenced him in public, Bush flashed his sense of humor by sporting colorful striped socks.

Bush's death comes after his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush, passed away on April 17 at age 92. Before her funeral, Bush was pictured in a wheelchair gazing at his wife's flower-covered casket, in a moment that encapsulated their life-long love affair.

The first sitting vice president to be elected to the presidency since 1836, Bush was also only the second person in US history to see his own son follow in his presidential footsteps when George W. Bush was elected in 2000.

In addition to the 43rd president, Bush is survived by his son Jeb, the former Florida governor and 2016 presidential candidate; sons Neil and Marvin; daughter Dorothy; and 17 grandchildren. His daughter Robin died of leukemia as a child, a tragedy that still moved Bush deeply late in his life. He will be buried alongside her and the former first lady at his presidential library in College Station, Texas.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time, according to the statement released by Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath.

Politics / Fayose's N10b Supplementary Budget Is Fraudulent - Fayemi Warns by clarkdave4real: 11:16am On Sep 13, 2018
Ekiti State Governor-elect Dr Kayode Fayemi has said there will be consequences for those who participate in “illegal appropriation of public funds …to defraud the state”.

Fayemi was reacting yesterday to a report of a N10 billion supplementary budget allegedly sent by Governor Ayodele Fayose to the House of Assembly “in cahoots with officials of the Ministry of Budget”.

The governor-elect warned ministry officials and lawmakers against being used for ‘’illegal appropriation of public funds’’.

He stressed that participants in such illegal act will account for their actions when the new administration assumes office next month.

A statement by the Director of Media and Publicity in Fayemi’s Media Office, Wole Olujobi, queried the rationale for a N10 billion supplementary budget almost a month to the October 16 hand over date.

The statement said: “The report alleging that Fayose coerced the Ministry of Budget officials to make a demand, backdated to August 23 for a supplementary budget of N10 billion a few days to the end of his administration, is fraudulent and not in the interest of the state.

“The governor’s covering letter, also backdated to August 30 for the legitimacy of such request, was equally done with fraudulent intention.

“Just yesterday (Tuesday), according to reports, the same supplementary budget was presented to the Assembly Clerk for immediate approval without presenting it to Assembly members at plenary to go through parliamentary procedures in budget processing.

“The latest development today, after the plot leaked on this fraudulent conduct, is that the budget is before the Assembly for a hush-hush debate for immediate approval.”

Fayemi warned that those taking part in any appropriation fraud will account for their actions when he assumes office next month.

He said: “We have warned government officials and Ekiti people against participating in illegal acts by the governor, and this fraudulent supplementary budget is not an exception.

“The incoming administration has a responsibility and commitment to the protection of Ekiti people from abuse by political leadership.

“This is our pact with Ekiti people and we will never shirk this responsibility to ensure accountability and good governance for our people.”

Politics / Mike Ozekhome Reacts To Detention Of Premium Times Reporter By Police by clarkdave4real: 2:23pm On Aug 16, 2018
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome, has condemned the arrest and detention of Premium Times journalist, Samuel Ogundipe by Nigeria Police, describing it as a re-enactment of the “inglorious locust days of Decree No. 4 of 1984 under President Muhammadu Buhari, then as a military dictator.”

This is coming as an advocacy group, Socio-Economic Rights, and Accountability Project has written to the United Nations over the arrest.

In a letter dated August 14, 2018, and addressed to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Mr David Kaye, SERAP said it was worried that media freedom was being eroded by the police in Nigeria.

It urged the UN to urgently intervene and prevail on the Federal Government and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to immediately free the detained journalist and stop the move to criminalise the freedom of expression in the country.

“There is a compelling public interest case in the protection of journalists’ sources. In this case, the attempts by the Inspector-General of Police to force Samuel Ogundipe to disclose the sources of his story cannot be justified on the grounds of public interest.

“In SERAP’s view, the continued detention of Samuel Ogundipe for having refused to reveal the source(s) of his story has violated not only his right to personal liberty but also his right to freedom of expression.

“We, therefore request the Special Rapporteur to prevail on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately and unconditionally release Mr. Samuel Ogundipe and to end the intimidation and harassment of journalists and the media,” SERAP said in its letter.

Ozekhome, in a statement, pointed out that journalists were protected by Section 22 of the Nigerian constitution to hold government accountable and responsible to the citizens.

Crime / Why I Ordered Invasion Of National Assembly - Sacked DSS Boss, Lawal Daura by clarkdave4real: 12:08am On Aug 11, 2018
There are indications that powerful politicians might have instigated Daura to order the blockage of the National Assembly by DSS operatives.

The sacked Director General of the Department of State Security Service, Lawal Musa Daura, has confessed that he deployed hooded operatives of the secret service to the National Assembly on Tuesday based on intelligence report that unauthorised persons were planning to smuggle dangerous weapons and incriminating items into the complex.

His confession was disclosed in the interim investigation report submitted by the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim to the acting president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

In the report seen by Daily Trust, IGP Idris argued that Daura carried out the siege on the National Assembly without the approval of the acting president.

"The former Director-General, Department of State Security Service, Mr Lawal Musa Daura acted unilaterally without informing the presidency. He did not share or intimate other security agencies on the unlawful operations," Idris said in the report.

The IGP said the purported intelligence report by Daura cannot be substantiated as the personnel deployed were not EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) experts or specialist in this regard.

Masked and unmasked DSS operatives laid siege to the National Assembly on Tuesday halting lawmakers and staff from gaining entry into the complex.

A female member of the House of Representatives, Boma Goodhead from Rivers State (PDP) confronted the DSS men laying siege at the National Assembly, daring them to shoot her.
