Another reason I prefer slack is that it's good for new programmers to get used to it as that's what most companies use to work.if you want to work remotely for a company you must be familiar with Slack. On slack, it's also easier to share your code with proper indentation.

Nice!

let's try both, as long as we're getting results.

D mods cant push ur thread containing a whatsapp group link in d front page cos i think its against their rules
Putting a whatsapp group link sef aint allowed(i guess)

i meant pinning the thread to the top of the programming section...

Yo, op... Lets create an all beginner programming language whatsapp group... Are you down for it??

nice!

we could use a nairaland thread too, maybe the mods could be graceful enough to help us pin it.

so all beginners on nairaland could just walk in and learn something new, drop their issues, projects and others.

we have pros here too that can help when the going gets tough and we need a pat on the back. And help profer solutions and at worse clues when we get stuck.

All under the watchful eyes of seun and his crew.

We could use the both bro, what do you think? grin

A degree will help you get to the door, basically. Preferable to have, but not the end of the world if you don’t as long as you can still ‘make up for it’ by proving yourself in other relevant ways . Speaking on CS specifically though, I don’t know how flexible other job sectors are. Also bear in mind that programming is only part of Computer Science, if you want to go into any of the other areas of CS I don’t know how flexible things are there either

in details please,

if you don't mind.

Hi guys, it's good to see you guys are beginning to come together, share information and keep eachother updated about things relating to the coming FUTA admission process, this is always the primary reason of FUTA admission threads and I'm certain you guys are utilizing it just well.

As a Final year student of the prestigious university (FUTA) and someone who benefited immensely from the 2013/2014 FUTA admission thread when seeking admission, I will put it on myself to help you guys moderate this thread, give you the latest on-campus information and share the original materials released by your departments that you all can use to prepare for your Post Utme.

Feel free to hit me up, ask questions and seek directions...even though I'm usually very busy and occupied as a final year student, I will make time to help out as I was once in your shoe.

Thanks brotherly.

OP
CS consists of more than just programming

... With CS degree u can work any where

do some deep research about CS and forget Nigeria mentality towards CS

... But yes u can be a great programmer without CS degree i.e
if a road mechanic whose work is just to repair a broken car has the opportunity to be the one who produces the car(automobile engineer),which will he choose? ... Just saying

lastly follow your heart and trust yourself... God bless

It takes experience to be a good programmer and not necessary a qualification however a degree will make it it a lot easier to get hired to be honest.

A lot of companies use degree requirements as a filter when searching for ‘talent’ and tend to want some form of formal education, typically a bachelors, if not then MULTIPLE years of experience and an EXTENSIVE portfolio. You also tend to get paid more, a degree just tends to result in higher lifetime earnings, long term. There will always be exceptions of course but generally speaking.

So essentially, if you have the option to get a degree, I would advise you do but if not, don’t fret too much as opportunities will still come, you’ll just need to showcase yourself a bit harder than the rest.

Well said,

i think i get your point,

a DEGREE will only pave way for me to showcase my skills(self-taught cheesy) and maybe a juicier package.

is that it?

not really, it's just that the Nigerian CS curriculum is not standard but I will choose a CS degree over anything

More reason why many of "US" register for online courses(MIT,STANFORD).

Before anything, you should know that Programming is just a small subset of Computer Science. It might be the most pronounced, but still, there's more to Computer Science than just programming...

So yes, the degree is very much worth it!

This is the only ground on which we defend our course as CS student's...

Programming / Re: Is A Degree In Computer Science Still Worth It??? by ClassicMcGee(m): 9:47am On Jun 20, 2018
edicied:
Computer science is the study of the theory, experimentation, and engineering that form the basis for the design and use of computers. It is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications and the systematic study of the feasibility, structure, expression, and mechanization of the methodical procedures (or algorithms) that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage, communication of, and access to, information. An alternate, more succinct definition of computer science is the study of automating algorithmic processes that scale. A computer scientist specializes in the theory of computation and the design of computational systems.[1] See glossary of computer science.
