A mosque burned to the ground in the midwestern United States on Monday, in what worshippers suspect was a hate attack, less than a day after a deadly shooting at a Sikh temple. Firefighters and police were called to the Islamic Center in Joplin, Missouri at 3:40 am (0840 GMT) — about an hour before local Muslims were about to pray during Ramadan — according to the FBI.“ The building was completely destroyed,” said Sharon Rhine, a spokeswoman for the local Jasper County Sheriff’s office. No one was hurt in the incident, according to a statement by the office that referred to the mosque as an “Islamic Church.” “No-one was apprehended. Theydon’t want to call it a hate crime without information or knowledge of having someone to charge,” Rhine said. Monday’s blaze followed an attack on July 4, when an unidentified suspect threw a petrol bomb onto the roof of thesame mosque, causing minor damage. The mosque’s surveillance cameras captured an image of the assailant’s face, and the FBI recently offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the man behind the July incident, but no one has been apprehended. FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said both incidents occurred in the middle of the night, but said the FBI would “wait to determine the cause of the fire.” “If it is determined that the attack was intentional, we will conduct an investigation to see if there is any correlation between this fire and that of July4,” Patton added. But the local Muslim community, which numbers around 125, said the fire was one of a series of attacks on their mosque sinceit was founded in 2007. “We’ve been constantly under attack,” said former mosque board member Navid Zaidi, 47. “Our sign has been burnt … Our mailbox was smashed multiple times. We had bullets shot at oursign.” Zaidi said it was fortunate that the attack occurred in the early morning when no one was there despite Ramadan, the busyand ongoing Muslim holy month of fasting and prayer. Zaidi also complained that no suspects have been caught in the month since the July 4 attack. “I don’t recall in my 27 years in the US, ever seeing perpetrators apprehended,” he said. At an attack at a Sikh Temple on Sunday, a gunman shot and killed six people before he was shot by a police officer. “We hope these are isolated events, but suddenly they have become more regular and bolder,” Zaidi added. The American Islamic Congress, a Muslim advocacy organization with headquarters in Washington, Boston and across the Middle East-North Africa region, condemned both the attack against the Wisconsin Sikh Temple and the Missouri mosque. “These faith communities came to this country seeking democracy and freedom and hoping to worship the way they wish,” the congress’s Washington-based director, Zainab Al-Suwaij told AFP. |

Our correspondent gathered that upon interrogation by the police, Onwe , who is the founder and pastor at Christ Rimites Church, confessed to killing his father and uncle on the suspicion that they were wizards who wanted to use occult means to kill him. We’ve had plenty of stories about the insane lengths the Olympics goes to in order to block out any appearance of a non-sponsor brand, including taping over the brands of non-sponsors on bathroom fixtures and urinals. And, apparently, the Olympics obsession with deleting all non-sponsorship brands extends almost to the point of contact when athletes decide to get down and dirty with each other. Every couple years, when the Olympics roll around, there are stories like this one, about the volume of s€xual activity in the Olympic Village among the athletes. And, if we go by condom count, the volume keeps on growing: At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, the Australian organizing committee distributed 45,000 free condoms in the village. Eight years later in Beijing, 70,000 condoms—labeled with the phrase ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’—were exhausted and 20,000 more were ordered. This year in London, the Olympic organizing committee is providing 150,000, using special dispensers which contain a message promoting s€xual health. Averaged among 10,490 athletes, that’s enough condoms for every athlete to have s€x 15 times over the Olympics’ three weeks And, of course, the Olympics found a sponsor to pay up for the privilege of being where the rubber meets the… well, you know. Durex is the official condom of the games. But… uh oh, call in the brand police! BMX cyclist Caroline Buchanan tweeted a photo of free condoms available in the Olympic Village which (*gasp*!) were not made by Durex! And, indeed, the response from the Olympics was swift, as they began an investigation into this illicit behavior, because just think of all the problems if these athletes had s€x with a non-sponsored condom! That cannot be allowed at all. ![]() |

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with the visiting U.S. Secretary of State, Mrs Hillary Clinton, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who arrived the Villa at 3.57 p.m., was received by the Foreign Minister, Amb. Olugbenga Ashiru and was expected to offer assistance in helping the country stop a worsening Islamist insurgency. Her visit to Nigeria comes with Jonathan under growing pressure to stop the violence in the northern and central regions of the country. Clinton, who was accompanied by officials of the U. S. Embassy in Nigeria and some diplomats, also had another meeting with Security Chiefs. They include all the Service Chiefs, the National Security Adviser, retired Col. Sambo Dasuki and the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar. It was reliably gathered that security issues in Nigeria and other African countries were discussed during the more than two and half hours meeting between Clinton and the Security Chiefs. Islamist militant group Boko Haram has killed more than 1,400 people in northern and central Nigeria since 2010, according to Human Rights Watch. “(Clinton) will be renewing our offers of assistance and help to the Nigerians,” a senior State Department official said. “This is a problem for Nigeria, but also, northern Nigeria borders Cameroon, it borders Niger. We are concerned that this kind of radical network could undermine the security of neighbouring states.” The US offer of assistance is to include helping to develop Nigeria’s investigative procedures, including forensics, according to the official. “We can help them develop mechanisms for tracking and determining individuals who are likely to be engaged in supporting Boko Haram actively,” the official said. Washington would also be willing to help Nigeria develop an intelligence coordination centre that would assist the country in integrating information, the official said. Clinton will spend several hours in the Nigerian capital Abuja before travelling to Ghana for the funeral of president John Atta Mills, who died on July 24. She has been on an African tour since July 31, having already visited Senegal, Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, Malawi and South Africa. She is also expected to briefly visit Benin.
