Politics / Kinsmen Fault Ex-governor Chime’s Criticism Of Enugu Council Election by coalcitynewz: 11:59am On Nov 08, 2017
THE Umuneke Progressive Front (UPF) has faulted the former governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime over his criticism of the last weekend’s local government election in the state.

The group, which is the premier umbrella organisation for all the communities in Chime’s Udi clan, described the former governor as “a bad loser”, insisting that the 4th November election was the best by any administration in Enugu State since 1999. UPF added that the former governor did not deserve more than the 19 votes, which he garnered for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) at his polling booth.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu, President of the group, Hon. Emeka Aneke, dismissed allegations of irregularities in the last council leveled on the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, by the former governor. UPF alleged that Chime ran an autocratic leadership in which party faithful and stakeholders had no inputs whatsoever into the councillorship and chairmanship candidates of the party.

“Again, unlike now that he had the opportunity to cast ballot at his polling booth, did he ever allow his processor, Chimaroke Nnamani, the opportunity to cast any vote? ENSIEC under Sullivan Chime was anything but independent as there was no semblance of election,” the group said, because he superintended over selections,” they emphasised.

They described Chime as “a noisy neighbour, trying to appease disappointed APC national leaders, who mistakenly thought they had captured an elephant in him, not knowing that he remains a political featherweight, who will never be able to win his polling unit”.

“We wonder how a man who could not win a senatorial seat as a sitting governor or touch the lives of his people positively for the eight years expected to be rewarded with undeserved votes by the same people he oppressed and talked down on. “His eight years as governor were a colossal waste to our people, hence his father’s status was brought down even while he was governor (although UPF does not support such extreme venting of anger and disappointment)” the statement added.

They said the PDP under the leadership of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi would continue to make a clean sweep of the polls even if conducted a million times as people like the ex-governor were a liability to the APC since he bequeathed only mountains of foreign and local debts as well as unpaid workers salaries and pension benefits to the elderly.

“We advise our brother, former governor Chime to climb down from his high horse and tell his party the truth about his disastrous outing in the council poll, starting from the abysmally loss at his polling booth”, UPF concluded.

Politics / Ex-enugu Governor Wants Cancellation Of Local Govt Election by coalcitynewz: 10:32am On Nov 07, 2017
A former governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, has called for the cancellation and rescheduling of the Saturday local government election in the state.

Mr. Chime also told the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) not to contemplate announcing results arising from the exercise.

The former governor made the call on Saturday night in Enugu while briefing journalists on the outcome of the exercise.

He said that the call was necessary to save ENSIEC from ridiculing itself by announcing ‘fictitious results’.

He said that from the events that played out across the state, it was obvious that the electoral umpire was not prepared for the election.

“They should go back and do their homework. No election held today. They should reschedule the election and be more prepared for it and forget about electoral fraud,” he said.

Mr. Chime said that it would have been in the best interest of the state government to allow for a free and fair election in order to test their popularity.

“I believe it would have been in the interest of the government to actually allow a free and fair election. That is the only way they can actually know their strength and whether they are doing well or not.

“If you do what it was today and you have fake results all over, they may be going in for a shocker in 2019 as the election will not be conducted by ENSIEC,” he said.

He said that his experience at his polling unit was very unfortunate and sad, adding that it was a resurgence of those primitive days.

“I went to vote in order to encourage people around there but sadly I think we have gone back to those primitive days. They were no result sheets and other sensitive materials.

“We observed impersonators with all sorts of cards to vote. Some were turned down while others succeeded.

“This is a situation where you have well known card carrying members of a party also functioning as electoral officials like supervisors and presiding officers. It was that bad,” he said.

Mr. Chime said that what played out during the polls could be likened “to where your opponent is your umpire in a contest”.

“I did not see anything close to an election or resembling free and fair election. In fact in some places there were no voting at all. We describe it as unfair.

“So elections properly so called did not hold in the state,” he said.

Mr. Chime said that the state government had before now held four local government elections, “but we never experienced any such nonsense as we did today.

“If this is what they plan to do in 2019 general election they should start looking for something else to do because it will not work,” Chime said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that protests by opposition parties over non-availability of result sheets during the exercise resulted to violence in many areas.

The opposition parties had insisted that voting would not hold without the presiding officers showing them the result sheets.

Earlier, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, commended ENSIEC for organising what it the described as the peaceful local government elections.

Speaking after monitoring the elections in the state, the National President of NANS, Chinonso Obasi, told journalists that he and his colleagues were pleased with the conduct of the elections. He applauded Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for providing an enabling environment, which he said gave the electorate the opportunity to exercise their franchise.

Mr. Obasi explained that despite complaints by the opposition over alleged late arrival of election materials, his team’s observations from the polling units visited showed that the exercise was successful, peaceful and in accordance with the commission’s guidelines.
