A father is lynched for rumor of eating beef! Also his son and grandmother of 75 years were beaten! Its unthinkable to know that cows are respected and honored by 80% of 1.2 billion Indians Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything - Genesis 9:3 |
A 50-year-old man in northern India has been killed in a mob lynching allegedly over rumours that his family had been storing and consuming beef at home. Mohammad Akhlaq was kicked and beaten with stones by a group of men in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh state on Monday night. Mr Akhlaq's 22-year-old son was also seriously injured in the attack, and has been admitted to a hospital. Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police are probing who spread the rumour. Slaughter of cows is a sensitive issue in India as the animal is considered sacred by Hindus, who comprise 80% of the country's 1.2bn people. Uttar Pradesh is among a number of Indian states who have tightened laws banning cow slaughter and the sale and consumption of beef. The beef ban has also provoked outrage with many questioning how the government decides what is on their plate. Mr Akhlaq's family said the family had stored mutton, and not beef in their fridge. The police have taken the meat and sent it for testing, reports said. "Some locals spread rumours that Akhlaq had cow meat at his home and engaged in cow slaughter. Following the rumours, they attacked his home," senior local official NP Singh told The Indian Express newspaper. Senior police official Kiran S told the AFP news agency that the "announcement about the family consuming beef was made at a [local] temple". The incident happened in a village, barely 50km (31 miles) away from the Indian capital, Delhi, where Mr Akhlaq, a farm worker, lived with his family. His 18-year-old daughter Sajida told the newspaper that a "group of more than 100 people from the village" reached the house on Monday night. "They accused us of keeping cow meat, broke down our doors and started beating my father and brother. My father was dragged outside the house and beaten with bricks," she said. "We had come to know later that an announcement had been made from the temple about us eating beef...There was some mutton in the fridge...The police have taken it for examination." Reports said local villagers, protesting against the arrests, had clashed with the police, and damaged a number of vehicles. Eleven states - including Uttar Pradesh - and two union territories (federally-administered regions) in India ban slaughter of cows, calves, bulls and bullocks. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-34398433

GOVERNOR Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, on Wednesday, announced a donation of N150 million towards the alleviation of the plight of victims of Boko Haram insurgency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. He made the presentation of N50 million to each of the states during the maiden National Council of Stat (NCS) meeting of the present administration presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Ambode told members of the council that Lagos was moved by the suffering of victims of Boko Haram activities affecting not only states in the north east, but also other parts of the country. The governor said his state saw the insurgent activities as traumatic to the people and sympathised with the three northern states mainly affected, noting that the donation was to ameliorate the plight of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the states. "There is no gainsaying the fact that the emergence of Boko Haram and its devastating activities is a single challenge facing us as a nation. Though, the insurgence is basically limited to the north-eastern part of Nigeria, the effect is felt everywhere across the states of the federation. "Recently, at the just-concluded 21st National Economic Summit of the National Economic Summit Group (NESG) in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation presented a graphic and heart-rending report of the extent of damage and social trauma brought about by insurgency in the region. "Lagos State views insurgency and natural disasters as hardships that leaves traumatic experiences. We commiserate with the three northern states and share the pains and discomfort of our brothers and sisters. "We also commend our president for the renewed commitment of the Federal Government to bringing insurgency to a logical conclusion by the year end. Our security agencies also deserve commendation for their gallantry, courage and resolve to ensure that the directive of the president and indeed the wish of all Nigerians is achieved. "Notwithstanding the hard times resulting from the current economic situation, we have resolved to show leadership and compassion to the plight of our brothers and sisters in North-Eastern Nigeria. "It is therefore in demonstration of our commitment towards bringing succour and relief to thousands of the IDPs that we present this donation of N50 million each to the governments of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. "We use this opportunity to call on all Nigerians including corporate organisations and other public spirited individuals to reach out at this time and alleviate the pains of our compatriots in this part of Nigeria." http://tribuneonlineng.com/node/20249
