The Cross River State Police Command killed one suspected robber and arrested six others shortly after they attacked a micro-finance bank in Calabar on Tuesday, November 15th. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Jimoh Ozi-Obeh, disclosed this to newsmen yesterday, at the command’s headquarters in Calabar while parading the suspects. Ozi-Obeh said the surveillance team attached to the Atakpa Police Division received a distress call from concerned members of the public informing them about an ongoing robbery at a bank located along Mayne Avenue by Inyang Street in Calabar South. “On November 15, 2016, men of the surveillance team attached to the Atakpa Division received a distress call of a bank robbery in Calabar South. My men immediately swung into action and confronted the gang in a serious gun battle which eventually led to the death of one of them by name Alex. We also arrested six of them and when searched, we recovered one black Toyota Camry without number plate; one locally made pistol, pump-top handset, phones, ATM cards and others “Out of the six suspects arrested, one of them is in the hospital receiving treatment after receiving serious gun shots. I must respectfully commend members of the public who availed us the useful information that led to the arrest of these suspects,” the Commissioner said. A married woman in Kisii town of Kenya who has been committing adultery with a man living in their neighbuorhood got stuck in bed with him after her husband visited a native doctor and collect charm. According to the reports, the woman left her home on Thursday, November 17, to go have her usual fun with her lover not knowing her husband has heard her stories and has gotten charms from a native doctor residing in the same town. While they were having sex, they suddenly got stuck and couldn’t move away from each other prompting them to start shouting for help. People later came around and carried them with a mattress. The lady’s husband then advised them to take them to the native doctor who gave him the charm as she was the only one that can separate them. The witch doctor later separated them and the man was made to pay for the services. The native doctor warned others toiling the same part to take the incident as a lesson. Ekiti state governor who turned 56 on Tuesday November 15th, took his birthday celebration to the streets of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital yesterday, where he shared his birthday cake with them and also handed them N200 each. Speaking at the celebration, he said; “It is a show of love to my people, we can’t sit in the government house and enjoy the comfort of the office without remembering them, I got a lot of gifts on my birthday, cakes, yam tubers, cows, rice and so on, how many can I eat? How many clothes can I wear at a time?”It is just normal, just good for me to go back to the street and give it back to the people that put me in the government house, this is my style, this is me naturally, just that this time around it is more elaborate moving from one junction to the other to ensure about 500 persons per junction get something small on my birthday. “The more people you can touch, the better for your life today and tomorrow, these are the set of people that will never walk into the government house asking for contract, asking for help, they will not even be allowed to get in unless the governor leave the comfort of his office to come and meet with them wherever they are and that is exactly what I am doing. “This are the people that employed us into the office, they should not be abandoned for one minute, we must stay with them continuously at every opportunity”. Sometimes, I wish President Muhammadu Buhari would have been as proficient in arresting Nigeria's recession as he is in arresting his critics! How I pray that this administration was as eloquent at announcing to the public what it has done as it is expert in informing the public what it is that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan allegedly did not do! If only this government applied itself to generating wealth for the nation the way it has devoted itself towards borrowing $29.9 billion. Wouldn't they have been popular if only they took time to sell their ideas and programs to Nigeria the way they lobbied to sell national assets that more serious governments acquired for Nigeria in times past. But alas, this is an administration that believes in propaganda instead of proper agenda! And speaking of propaganda, nothing proves my point than the conflicting statements that keep emanating from the Presidency. After attending Eid prayers in Daura on September 12, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari spoke to newsmen and said 'we should thank God this year, the report I'm getting, which is very pleasing, is that we will have a bumper harvest this year.' Well, we should thank God everyday and every year, whether or not we have a bumper harvest because we enjoy our existence by His providence, but that is not my point. My point is that after saying what he did, President Buhari's presidency turned around on November 14, 2016 to raise an alarm of an impending famine. The loud headline on the Punch Newspapers on that day screamed 'Presidency Raises Alarm Over Imminent Famine'! Now how can you have a famine two months after a supposed 'bumper harvest'? This makes no sense! Sometimes I wonder whether the President Buhari led administration is confused or perhaps it is forgetful or maybe if it is untruthful! How can you have a bumper harvest and then say that famine is imminent in the same breath? Is that now how they accused Goodluck Jonathan of looting $15 billion out of $10 billion? I hope those who excoriated me when I pointed out that Audu Ogbeh, a graduate of French, was the wrong choice to succeed Akinwumi Adesina, a PhD in agricultural economics from Purdue university, can now see the sense in my admonition. Just three years ago, Nigeria under President Jonathan received a Food and Agriculture Organization award by the United Nations for reducing hunger and now we have made a 360 degree turn and are on the brink of a famine. And the contradictory statements continue. President Muhammadu Buhari during his Independence Day broadcast of October 1, 2016 said 'investors from all over the world are falling over themselves to come and do business in Nigeria.” How the President uttered that lie with a straight face still amazes me. But what was even more amazing is the headline in the papers on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. On that day, The Cable newspaper ran with a headline 'EU: Five Reasons Our Investors Are Not Coming to Nigeria' in which it interviewed Michel Arrion, head of the EU delegation to Nigeria, who gave reasons why European Union investors were not 'falling over themselves to come and do business in Nigeria', chief of which was the Buhari administration's unstable and unreliable foreign exchange policy and its general economic direction. Talking about unstable financial policies, with all due respect, Kemi Adeosun cannot pull off the economic magic that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala pulled off under President Obasanjo (when oil sold for less than half of what it sells for today) and under President Jonathan. Kemi Adeosun has a bachelor degree in economics from the University of East London. I schooled in England and I know that that University is a second class university. The school ranks number 126 in the U.K University League Table 2017. Go ahead and Google it! Moreso, this is someone who has just a degree in economics and post graduate diploma which is not as high as bachelors. Now you had someone who has a PHD in regional and economic development and worked as a Managing Director at the World Bank and also a former Minister of Finance replaced by Kemi. In a difficult period like this you need to put your best hands and as a leader, you have to be unsentimental and take hard decisions. Nigeria is in recession and we need our best hands. The above fact was made ever more obvious on Monday November 14, 2016 when the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that Nigeria is experiencing a record inflation of 18.3%. To put things in perspective Nigeria's inflation rate fell below 9% under President Jonathan but has doubled under President Buhari! From record recession to record inflation and now record famine. This is what happens when you blame others instead of taking responsibility! Success in government comes from deciding early on in what direction you as President want to go and only bring in appointees who are going in the same direction as you are. Such appointees will help you overcome your weaknesses because everyone has weaknesses and makes mistakes. The difference is that wise leaders focus on recovering from mistakes while leaders lacking in wisdom focus on who to blame. You see, the purpose of power is not to impress people with what you can do but to achieve greatness through with the power you yield. It is highly embarrassing that this administration continues to blame previous administrations yet in all spheres and in all indexes it is underperforming when compared with the very administrations it denigrates. And not content with denigrating past administrations, this government wants to extends its caustic tongue on foreign governments. After the Federal Executive Council meeting of Wednesday November 9, 2016, the minister of agriculture, Audu Ogbeh said of Donald Trump's victory “he made comments about Nigerians when he was campaigning that they had stolen money, they should go back to their country and live. He has a very low opinion of the blacks and Hispanics. We hope he’ll become a president now for all, including Nigerians and others, resident in the US. “But if he doesn’t, it means we’ll have to re-tune and re-tool our foreign policy to begin to find a situation where we may have to be welcoming some of our people if they come under extreme pressure. We hope it doesn’t happen.” First of all, it is really sad that the minister based what he said on beer parlour rumour because Donald Trump has never even mentioned Nigeria during the electioneering campaigns and all those reports have been debunked by the BBC which did a fact check on what Trump did or did not say titled 'Mythbuster: What Donald Trump didn't say about Africa' and published on November 11, 2016. However, with all that President Buhari's grass importing minister of agriculture said about Donald Trump, let us appreciate the fact that though Donald Trump has not even been sworn in, he has already named some members of his intended cabinet just days after winning the election. That is real change, not the reverse change promised by someone who waited for 6 months after his swearing in before naming his cabinet consisting of an Agriculture minister who studied French and other misfits! When Princewill Jumbo, a 300-level student of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, and his friends were returning to Port Harcourt from a burial in the Buguma area of the state on Saturday, little did they know that they were going to spend the rest of the weekend in police custody. The friends are Iyoyo Soberekon, Charles Benjamin, Julius Abazie and Franklin Ordu, who is said to be a final year student of the institution. PUNCH Metro learnt that the victims were arrested by the Anti-Cultism Squad of the state police command at a park in Buguma, where they wanted to board a bus en route to their residence in Port Harcourt around 5pm on that day. It was gathered that the chairman of a motorcycle riders’ association had called the policemen on the telephone after an argument ensued between the victims and one of the riders who conveyed them to the park. The police team, numbering about six, were said to have whisked away the five friends to their station on the ground that they were cult members. Princewill, who spoke on the telephone with our correspondent on Tuesday, said the operatives undressed him and his friends and beat them with sides of cutlasses. It was learnt that the victims, except Ordu who is still in custody as of the time of filing this report, were released on Monday. Princewill said, “Franklin (Ordu) gave the rider N500 and requested N300 change, but the rider said he did not have change. His co-riders volunteered to split it but he refused. He said Franklin must find N200. That was how the argument started. As we were arguing, a man, who called himself the park manager, wanted to slap Franklin. We cautioned him and the next thing he did was to call the policemen on the telephone that cult members were disturbing the community. “The policemen removed our clothes. We were left with only our boxers. They told us to lie on the floor and they started flogging us with the sides of cutlasses. They beat us up as we made our statements. When the beating persisted Franklin told them that he was a cultist. They later took us to the Swift Operation Squad office in Port Harcourt. “Inside the cell, there is a 13-year-old boy, called Small . He told us he was arrested a few weeks ago around his house in Abonima and that his family members were not aware that he was in police custody. Others we met there said they were just picked on the roads.” Twenty two-year-old Princewill said he was in pains, urging that the policemen, who assaulted them, should be brought to book. “I don’t know their names but I can recognise them,” he added. His father, Mr. Progress Jumbo, said, he parted with N20,000 because the policemen threatened to implicate Princewill. He said, “The policemen asked me to pay N20,000 or else they would send a letter to my son’s school that he was a cult member. That was the threat they used to extort the money from me. As a father, I had to succumb to their threat. Why should I allow my son to be rusticated for no reason?” Princewill’s sister, Mrs. Peace Asoka, said, “The authorities need to know about this incident so that the police can stop harassing innocent persons. The policemen involved in this should be brought to justice. They collected N2,000 from me before I was allowed to see my brother in the cell.” Benjamin, one of the victims, described the incident as “embarrassing”, and demanded Ordu’s release “They kicked my face before they used the cutlass on me. They did not behave like policemen,” he added. The Rivers State Police spokesperson, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, urged the victims to come to his office for the identification of the policemen involved in the alleged assault. “As for Franklin (Ordu), somebody has to stand as a surety for him before he can be released. The person has to sign an undertaking that he will be of good behaviour henceforth,” he added. Police has arrested the criminals terrorizing Etinan local government of Akwa ibom state. The suspects were charged to court but were surprisingly granted bail. According to Bisho Eva-co, who posted the photos on Facebook, his neighbor was one of their numerous victims. Narrating how she lost 3.2 million to the suspected criminals, he claimed that the criminals used charm to hypnotise the woman into parting with the large sum. “She was coming back from Etinan to Uyo when she entered their vehicle and one of them was busy lamenting that he is a stranger and doesn’t know any where around that place, out of pity she started asking him questions to see if there is a way she can be of help to him but not knowing that they’re all together, immediately she asked him a question she forgot herself and started doing everything they ask her to do. She gave them Money three times. The first day she gave them 600k because that was what she had in her account and borrowed the rest from people to give them. They were 4 in number but only these 3 was arrested but the funny thing is that their charm was still working even in court because the magistrate that granted them bail without paying a damn must be Under something.
