At this exchange rate you mentioned 0.58usd it translated to N85 per litre during GEJ regime which was by far more conveniently affordable back then, the only problems then was the occasional scarcity not that they couldn't afford it back then.

Only NNPC knows how much they were buying from Malta and Singapore before Dangote came on the scene. Only NNPCL knows how much crude they give dangote in exchange for petrol. Only NNPCL knows the true position of petrol subsidy and its extent. Transparency is dead in that corporation.

NNPCL didnt deny the story about them giving DRL 385k pbd of crude in exchange for petrol so how did they translate that to 898 NGN per litre of petrol. Mind you, Dangote says 44% of 650k bpd can satisfy local market plus smuggling needs. 44% of 650 is 286k pbd. What happens to the remaining 99k bpd equivalent?

If the public refineries had been doing that since, Nigerians won't know what scarcity is. It would have been a matter of a markerter approaching the refinery to buy what they usually sell in intl market and selling it at open market price to Nigerians.

Domestic refining can only work in an atmosphere of full deregulation. That is something tinubu has refused to do all this time, but thanks to the inflation and rising costs of production, the price of subsidy is rising beyond what government can control. And NNPC is virtually tottering.

Yet they want to buy fuel from dangote, and subsidise it by forcing NNPC to pay for the loss generated by the shortfall.
