Crime / Trigger-happy Policeman Guns Down Woman While In Chase Of Yahoo Boys by ColdGist: 9:25pm On Apr 04, 2017
During a chase of Internet scammers, a Policeman identified as Tboy shot dead the mother of Twitter user @naijapasito. The young man has been crying for justice on Twitter ever since the incident.

According to an eye witness @Chydee, the incident happened at Onipanu toll gate. The young man went on to narrate how the Policeman had also hit two others with stray bullets.

The people of Onipanu are currently rooting for justice. And from all indications, there would be an unrest in the area for some days.

Politics / Nigerian Army Recovers 23 Skeletons From Militants by ColdGist: 1:20pm On Oct 29, 2016
23 human skeletons were discovered in four shrines owned by militants in Cross river state by the Nigerian Army.

The Army on the platform of Operation Delta Safe raided Ikot Ene Idem, Abakpa and Ikang Inam in Bakassi and Akpabuyo Local Government Areas of the State where they found the shrines.

Two suspects were arrested and have been accused of being agents of Bakassi Strike Force Militants who act as spies.

The troops carried out another operation in Rivers State, following a distress call from Finima in Bonny of an attack by some cult members using AK 47 riffles to terrorise members of the community.

The suspected king pin popularly referred to as Eagle Face dived into the river on sighting troops.

Two of the suspected cult members were arrested while one locally made pistol, one machete and two handsets were recovered.

According to the military, the body of the suspected king pin was later seen floating in the creeks by locals who recovered and buried the corpse at Bonny River bank.

The Acting Commander of the Tasks Force, Brig.- Gen. Kevin Aligbe, has reassured residents and oil companies in the Niger Delta region of their safety and advised that they should go about their legitimate businesses.

Militant activities had resurged in the Niger Delta region last year, with militants attacking oil installations in the region.

A group that calls itself the Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks.

They had said they agreed to a ceasefire and would begin negotiation with the Federal Government but later resumed attacks, claiming it was launched as a warning to the military to stop harassing youths in the Niger Delta.

Education / Senate Suspends Amendment Of JAMB Establishment Act by ColdGist: 7:21am On Oct 27, 2016
Despite its earlier proposal to amend the Act establishing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the Senate has suspended the idea to allow for adequate consultation with experts.

A statement issued in Abuja yesterday by JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Aliyu Wamakko, represented by Senator Ajayi Boroffice, made the announcement at an oversight visit to its Headquarters.

The suspension was to avoid impeding on the progress being made by JAMB in the conduct of examinations in Nigeria. He said:

“Your JAMB result is only valid for one year and we thought it would be better for it to be valid for at least three years. That would reduce the burden on the parents, students and even the institution that is conducting the test. I think it is good for all of us and would not be rejected by the public.

“We don’t make laws for an individual or for the Senate. But we make laws for the country in the interest of all of us. A bill must not necessarily be at the convenience of a particular organiasation. Since we don’t want to make a law that would impede the progress of any institution, we are bound to listen to what the stakeholders are saying.”

According to wamakko:

“JAMB has made so much progress over the years and should continue to improve on its performance because the lives of millions of Nigerians depend on it.

In his reaction, the Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said he was happy the Senate listened to its appeal. He implored members of the House of Representatives and the Executive to tow the line of the Senate by suspending the amended Act.

Politics / Fuel Scarcity Looms As NUPENG Gives FG 21- Day Ultimatum by ColdGist: 6:37pm On Oct 26, 2016
The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) has given the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government 21 days to halt the mass sack of its members by major oil companies or face mass action from the union, reports Vanguard.

NUPENG made its position known in a communique issued by its Central Working Committee currently in a crucial meeting in Warri, Delta state.

The oil workers body noted that over 3000 oil workers have been sacked by oil and servicing companies who are closing shops on account of the current economic recession and said it cannot stand it any longer.

NUPENG who read the
communiqué:

“NUPENG will take all necessary action to drive home its demands if FG failed to act in 21 days. We are 100% in support against anti-corruption, but there must be respite for Nigerians.

“Right now, our members and even those in other sectors are no longer able to pay school fees for their children and even afford sents. Worse still, those being sacked now are so treated without commitment to proper terminal benefits.”

Politics / Senate Begins Investigation Into Customs Service by ColdGist: 6:01pm On Oct 26, 2016
The Senate on Wednesday started comprehensive probe into the activities of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to block revenue leakages and enhance generation.

The probe, launched by the Senate Committee on Customs and Excise, will look into ways to increase revenue generation capacity of the service.

The Chairman of the committee, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, during an versight visit to the NCS headquarters in Abuja, said the service should generate enough revenue to fund the nation’s budget.

He expressed displeasure at a report by the Ministry of Finance, which indicated that the NCS had generated less than N400 billion so far in 2016.

Uzodinma said the committee might re-enact the law establishing the service for optimal performance.

“We are looking into the operations of Customs Service; looking at the areas of revenue generation and possible leakages with a view to finding solutions.

“We have done detailed work and we have established contacts with all commands under the service.

“All we are interested in is to evolve a robust framework that will help the NCS earn more revenue.

“In order to do that effectively, we are examining its current mode of operations with a view to refining how things are done.

“By the time we finish looking at the operations of some of the ports, we will come back and look at how best to amend the existing Act.

“We want to create a situation where the NCS will be able to fetch the country the kind of revenue we are looking for from non-oil sector,’’ he said.

Commenting on the revelation that the service could not access some oil companies for payment of levies, Uzodinma said that was part of the impediments that require enabling laws.

“There are some limitations that have not made it possible for the customs service to perform its mandate the way it should.

“Those are things that we will also look into so as to remove all obstacles to enable it function effectively,’’ the committee chairman said.

While interacting with the Comptroller-General of the Service, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd.), Uzodinma requested that certain documents be submitted to enhance the committee’s probe.

The committee gave the service till Oct. 28 to submit the documents and answer all the queries posed.

It sought to know how the seven per cent Negotiable Duty Credit was managed and how the service handled seized cargoes and overtime cargoes.

The NCS is expected to render details of how it handles seized cigarette and alcohol, record of auctioned overtime and seized cargoes.

The committee also demanded for record of all waivers granted in the last three years, value of the waivers, detailed record of sugar levy and other details of revenue accrual.

Uzodinma expressed displeasure at the inability of the service to collect duty from oil companies, promising that a legislation to review the law would be initiated.

In his remark, the Custom CG, Col. Hameed Ali, assured that the service would fully cooperate with the committee.
He directed NCS officials to provide the committee with all the information and documents it required.

Crime / I Sacrificed Human Head As Advised By Mad Woman — Suspect by ColdGist: 7:26am On Oct 26, 2016
A 20-year-old man identified as Emmanuel Effiong has said he beheaded a woman at the Aba park on the instructions of a mad woman, who allegedly advised him to throw a human head into a river or he would go mad.

“I gave a mad woman money one day in Aba and she told me to look for a skull or human head and throw inside a river or I will go mad.

“One morning, when I saw a lifeless body in front of the park, I decided to cut off the dead woman’s head for the exercise. I threw the head into the Aba River to remain a normal person,” he said.

Effiong made the confession while in the custody of the police. He had been arrested by police operatives in Aba, Abia State in connection with a threat to kidnap and kill one Ikechukwu Udogu.

It was gathered that the search for Effiong started when the police got the information that an unknown person, through a phone text, threatened to kill one Udogu, if he failed to pay him a N15m ransom.

It was learnt that police operatives attached to the Central Police Station, Aba, swung into action and arrested the suspect with the mobile phone number used in sending the threat message.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Adeleye Oyabade, who confirmed the arrest of the suspect, said he confessed to the crime.

Oyebade added that the suspect also confessed that he was behind the headless woman found on September 29, 2016 at the Aba main motor park.

He said three knives and a phone were recovered from the suspect, adding that investigation was in progress to unravel the mystery behind the dastardly act.

Speaking with Southern City News, Effiong, who said he hails from Ikot Edet in Akwa Ibom State, accepted that he demanded the ransom from Udogu for refusing to pay him his salary since September 2009.

He said, “I served Mr. Udogu for many years as his gateman, but he stopped paying my salary since September 2009. So, I decided to send him the threat message to get my money from him.”

Politics / Why We Arrested Reuben Abati – EFCC by ColdGist: 6:37pm On Oct 25, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has given reasons for the arrest of the former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati on Monday.

The commission said in a post on its official Facebook page that it invited Abati to its headquarters in Abuja to explain his role in an alleged mismanagement of the nation’s funds during former President Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The EFCC said Abati “honoured an invitation by the EFCC at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria. He is presently telling operatives of the commission his role in the alleged mismanagement of the nation’s resources through his office. We shall keep you posted.

On Monday, an EFCC operative told Daily Sun the specific reason Abati was invited because “it has to do with the ONSA money.”

The EFCC also arrested and detained former minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed over N1.2 trillion fraud.

Mohammed will tell the EFFCC what he knows about a controversial N1 trillion land swap programme, alleged contracts scam totalling N1billion and collection of N1 billion bribe.

Similarly, the commission has quizzed former special adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in connection with the controversial $2.1 billion arms deal scam in the office of the former Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Col.
Sambo Dasuki.

It is still unclear how much the anti-graft agency has accused him of collecting from the alleged arms deal cash.

Last week, former minister of state for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro was detained by the anti-graft agency on allegations of money laundering.

Politics / Femi Fani-kayode's Life Is In Danger - Aide Says Over EFCC Arrest by ColdGist: 10:04pm On Oct 21, 2016
FFK's aide released the Press statement below:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) once again lived up to its billing of being used by the current administration for the sinister purposes of silencing the opposition under the guise of fighting corruption.

As expected and as earlier stated in his press statement, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode had already raised the alarm that he was going to be rearrested by the EFCC as the Organisation whose operations have become easily predictable have graduated from being an investigative body meant to serve the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians to a vindictive institution willing to do the biddings of some vengeful cabal whose existence even the wife of the president confirmed recently.

Let it be on record that Chief Femi Fani-Kayode was held for 67 days in EFCC custody who used questionable orders from magistrates to perpetuate their illegality. While in their custody he suffered all forms of abuses, trauma and even physical attacks from some of the agents of the Commission. Their thinking was that all these torture and torments would be enough to silence him. But rather than being silenced, Fani-Kayode, to the consternation of his traducers, has remained faithful to his position right from the pre-election periods that this is a regime of evil men whose only purpose for wanting power was to waste their perceived enemies, their family members and all those associated with them. Is that not why despite the urgent need to tackle the economic recession they have plunged the country into, they have concentrated all their efforts on dealing with all members of the opposition and perceived enemies even including Honourable Justices of the Supreme Court.

The re-arrest of Fani-Kayode is needless as much as it is reckless. Immediately after he was granted bail by the courts, obviously to the disappointment of state agents, he had been on a recovery therapy as recommended by his doctors having suffered untold ardship in the hands of the EFCC. But realizing that their plans to torture him into silence did not work, the Commission immediately swung into action again by sending him another round of letters of invitation for some other imagined charges to which his lawyers responded
promptly by informing the EFCC of his health conditions. Despite this, the Commission filed their fresh case against him at the Federal High Court Abuja in the Charge No. FHC/ABJ140/2016 earlier this month but despite the presence of Fani-Kayode’s legal team, the EFCC were
neither there nor did they send any representative nor was their legal team in court.

The case was consequently adjourned to November 10, 2016 (Please, see attached). We are therefore aghast but not surprised that this latest action of the EFCC is in sync with the script writers of this whole episode to silence Fani-Kayode by hook or by crook. Words have filtered to us from credible sources within the presidency and the security agencies that the ultimate aim of those who are behind the former minister’s travails is to apply “extreme measures” on him.

We have also been told that in security circles, that means to have him killed through the use of some poisonous substances that would break his health down irreversibly and eventually kill him even months after he might have been released so that the suspicion would not be at the doorsteps of state agents. If not, why allow Nenadi Usman (former minister of State of Finance) and Director of Finance in the PDP Campaign Organisation, Danjuma and others charged alongside Fani-Kayode to go and only him was re-arrested in the court premises? Our fears now are that nothing is beyond this government of sadists and fascists. We call on the good people of Nigeria, democrats and lovers of this great nation to rise and demand that no Nigerian should be persecuted or assassinated based on his beliefs and or opinions on critical national matters. We are watching very closely, and should anything untoward happen to FFK, Nigerians of kourse know who to hold responsible even as we demand for his immediate and unconditional release now! Thank you.

Family / Couple Married For 31years Split Over Infidelity Allegations by ColdGist: 9:46am On Oct 21, 2016
A trader, Mrs Funmilayo Okeeyi, has explained to an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, why she followed her husband’s brother to a hotel, which is now threatening her 31-year-old marriage to Mr. Kolawole Okeeyi.

Funmilayo claimed her husband’s family beat her comatose when she was pregnant with her fifth baby.

According to her, “my husband caught his brother and I in a hotel, but we are not dating. His brother just followed me to book a room when I went for a urial in Oyo State.”

Accusing her husband’s family of battery, she said: “When I was pregnant with our fifth baby, my husband’s family stormed our house and accused me of having extra-marital affairs; they beat me to coma. In fact, I did not know how I got to the hospital.”

Pleading with the court not to grant her husband’s request, insisting that she was still in love with him, Funmilayo said the love text messages from their pastor her husband found on her phone were forged.

My story — Husband

Kolawole, 51, a businessman, had asked the court to terminate the 31-year-old marriage, accusing his wife of having extra-marital affairs with their pastor.

He said: “I got to know when I did not have airtime on my phone and wanted to use her phone to call our pastor, to report her for starving my mother. I picked her phone and I saw on the screen ‘Sent Message’.

“I mistakenly clicked on it and when the message opened, I saw several love messages my wife sent and received from our pastor. I showed her the messages when she same in, but she begged me.

“I seized the phone and later confronted our pastor with those text messages. But he told me to do my worst.

“I also caught her with my brother in a hotel in Oyo State. I wanted to ignore them, but I later confronted them so that they would not deny later.”

The petitioner alleged that his wife was after his life and that he had been attacked on two occasions.
