A Nigerian University, has been listed among the best universities in the world: The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, has been graded the best in the country and among the best 2,000 in the world in the latest Webometrics ranking released in January this year. The Webometrics University Ranking, which provides indicators for more than 12,000 universities in the world, is based on university web presence, visibility and web access. The ranking system measures how strongly a university is present in the web by its own web domain, sub-pages, rich files and published scholarly articles. According to the ranking system, web presence is a reliable indicator of the global performance and prestige of the universities and could serve as an indirect way to measure efficiency of universities in the performance of their tripartite function of teaching, research and knowledge transfer. The Vanguard reports that spokesman of UNN, Chief Okwun Omeaku made this known at Nsukka, saying that the improved rating of the institution was not unconnected with the enhanced research efforts in the university following the Vice-Chancellor’s encouragement and financial reward system. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the replacement of 13 vice chancellors of Nigerian universities. Twelve of them are federal ones, and Vincent Tenebe, the vice chancellor of the National Open University, has also been relieved of his position. All these institutions were established by the former president, Goodluck Jonathan. Read More: http://trendsglamour..com.ng/2016/02/finally-nigerian-university-makes-it-to.html

More and more colleges and universities are recognizing the demand for alternatives to traditional education. With today’s busy lifestyles, many people find it difficult to find time to go back to school without sacrificing existing obligations. This problem is being solved, though, with an increasing amount of accredited online universities that allow for alternate means of earning a degree. Accredited online universities utilize advancing technology to expose the student to course work required for the degree. This includes televised classes, online chat, emailed assignments and online classrooms. Students enrolled in online courses often find it difficult to balance their academic, social and occupational lives. As such, Experts at Collegescholarshipsdigest.com have created this list of five key tips on how to be a successful digital learner. You may find that these steps are also useful for being a successful traditional student, but they are especially critical for online students to succeed. - Be motivated to learn With more potential distractions and no instructor or peers to judge your work in a physical classroom, it may become more difficult to stay focused on your work. For such times, it is helpful to set short-term goals with small breaks to keep yourself working steadily. It can also be helpful to set a long-term goal, so that you can remember that your hard work is going towards something great that you really want to accomplish. - Take the class seriously While online classes are designed to be more time-flexible, your efforts and outcomes will impact your future just as much as a those for a traditional higher-ed course. Thus, it is useful to know what the expectations are for the class; if the workload is too heavy or too light, you may find it difficult to take the class seriously. To help with this, make sure to read the course syllabus (if available) thoroughly and communicate with the instructor before deciding whether you should keep or drop a class. -Know what kind of learner you are An invaluable tip for being successful is to recognize and understand your own personality and learning style. Considering how these characteristics are crucial for a person’s motivation and attitude, it becomes clear that they can easily aid your success or failure. For instance, if you are outgoing, work better with friendly competition and prefer hands-on learning, taking a traditional or hybrid course may be better options for you. - Have the right technology As an online student, it is necessary for you to have the appropriate technology to work effectively. This means (minimally) having an efficient personal computer, consistent access to the internet, and an updated internet browser. For UW Bothell, most course-related websites and learning management systems (LMS)–such as Canvas–work best with Firefox and Chrome. - Take advantage of available resources One of the greatest advantages to taking courses online is the accessibility of internet resources while using a computer, which is often restricted or disallowed in a traditional classroom setting. However, it is also important to keep in mind that the instructor and your online peers can be very helpful too, especially for clarifications and discussions. Communicating often with an open mind will help you generate new ideas, perspectives and gain a better understanding of any topic. Which Jobs Are Right for You? Deciding what career you want to pursue is exciting. But because there are so many career paths it can be hard to choose. You might read about a court case in the news and want to be a trial lawyer. Then, after you watch a wildlife documentary, becoming a marine biologist might seem like a good idea. How do you decide which to choose, or even where to start? Here’s an activity that can help you explore the possibilities. You’ll gain more than a better understanding of various jobs; you’ll also learn something new about yourself. Step 1: Think about what interests you. Divide a page into four columns. Label the first two columns “Interests” and “Job Ideas.” In the first column, list your interests, such as children or sports. Then in the second column, list jobs that have something to do with each interest. Need help? Think about people you've read about or met who have interesting jobs, or use the career quizzes that are available in your counselor's office or online. Step 2: Consider how to get there. Label the third column “Requirements.” No, you don't have to plan your whole life right now, but it’s good to know what skills, classes and degrees different jobs require. You might discover that you don't like any of the courses needed to complete a college major that would prepare you for one of the jobs on your list. To get information about education requirements for different jobs, use Major and Career Search. Step 3: Try it out. Label the last column “Things I Can Do Now” and list ways of getting a feel for what one of the jobs on your list is really like. You can choose some of these ideas or come up with your own: - Volunteer where you’re likely to meet someone who has one of the jobs you’re interested in. - Look into a paid or unpaid internship. - Accompany someone working in that field to see what a day on the job is like. - Conduct research at the library or on the Web. - Find a mentor who can give you perspective and advice. - Talk to family members and friends who work in those careers or know others who do. Once you’ve gotten a better feel for a career, decide whether you still want to keep it on your list. Even if you decide to cross it off, you'll have gained valuable insight into what you might like to do. Getting straight A’s won’t guarantee success, but it sure doesn’t hurt. A high GPA will help you make more money, pursue further education, or change career paths. If you’re going to spend many thousands of dollars on a college education, you might as well make the most of it. Right? Grade point average (GPA) is an advanced way of calculating grade, each semester a Grade point avarege (GPA) shall be computed for all courses taken in the semester, the GPA shall be computed and rounded off to two decimal places (2.99). Being smart will help you get good grades, but it isn’t required. Neither is studying nonstop. The key to academic success is being disciplined and efficient in your study habits. Here are 2 reasons why your GPA matters: 1. Going further in your academic pursuit If your plan is to go to graduate school for Masters, your GPA is going to matter, as schools will look at your transcripts; so maintaining a high GPA is essential. 2. Low GPA decreases your chances to easily securing a job If you plan on entering the job market immediately after graduation, your GPA is also very important. Recruitment exercises are known for using GPAs to screen out applicants in a bid to cut down the number of applicants to be invited for interview. These 8 strategies will help you raise your GPA while minimizing stress and overall study time. 1. Go to class – I know this one is mind-numbingly obvious but it’s important. Many professors lecture directly from PowerPoint and post the slides to the internet. This makes it tempting to skip class, download the lecture notes, and learn the material on your own. Although you can probably get away with this in easy courses, you’ll face problems in challenging ones. By skipping class, you miss out on a few important things: - Detailed verbal explanations that are key to understanding the material - The chance to ask questions and listen to the Q&A of other students - Special announcements - Opportunities for extra credit It’s also important to consider how skipping class affects your reputation. In most classes, grades are somewhat subjective. This means that the grader’s perception of you can make or break your grade. If you frequently miss class, you’ll be perceived as someone who lacks respect for the professor and the subject matter. Why should they give you the benefit of the doubt or round that B+ up to an A-? 2. Sit in the front row – Not only will sitting in the front row build self confidence, it will automatically engage you in the lecture. You’ll appear to be an eager student and highly visible to the teacher. This will help your academic reputation and make it more likely you’ll develop a relationship with the professor. You’ll have a much easier time maintaining focus and will feel more like a participant than a passive observer. 3. Take notes by hand – Another unfortunate side effect of the PowerPoint revolution is that it discourages students from taking notes. Taking notes by hand will improve your grades because a) it forces you to pay attention, and b) the physical act of writing aids memorization. If you take notes, you’ll find it much easier to stay engaged. Your notes also provide a point of reference that will help you build a mental link between a written concept and the professor’s verbal explanation. This is key for efficient studying. 4. Do a weekly review – A common problem students encounter is trying to learn an enormous amount of material right before the midterm or final exam. This is practically impossible. You’ll find it much easier if you take a gradual approach to studying. At least once a week, review your notes starting from the beginning of the course. This only needs to take 15 or 20 minutes, just enough time to build familiarity with the material. By doing a weekly review you’ll gradually memorize everything and will better understand how one concept builds on the next. Putting in small amounts of effort on a consistent basis will drastically reduce the amount of studying you need to do right before the test. 5. Go to office hours – Professors and TA’s usually make themselves available at regular times during the week for students to ask questions about assignments. Do yourself a favor by taking advantage of this opportunity. First, attending office hours will motivate you to get ahead on your work and prepare questions to ask. This will give you a huge edge in understanding problems that aren’t clearly explained in the lectures. Second, it will build your reputation as a high-effort student who deserves high grades. 6. Find smart people to work with – In courses that involve group work, this is essential. No one wants to get stuck with a bunch slackers, have to do all the work themselves, and end up with a poor grade to show for it. The quality of the your learning experience is directly related to the attitudes of the people you work with. Working with smart people will facilitate discussion. The best way to understand an idea is talking about it with other intelligent people. Who you work with also affects your academic reputation. If you associate with students that aren’t interested in learning, teachers and graders will assume you feel the same way. It’s also a great way to connect with people who have similar interests and ambitions. 7. Avoid all-nighters – Generally, having to pull an all-nighter means that you slacked off all semester and need to fit 3 months of learning into one day. If you use a gradual study strategy this will never be necessary. All-nighters don’t work! Yes, it might be possible to get a good grade if the course is easy, but it’s much more likely that your grade will be significantly lower. All-nighters harm performance because they make you tired and stressed. You’ll also forget most of what you learn right after the test, decreasing the practical value of your education. 8. Play – Please create a good leisure time for yourself. All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. Culled from: http://www.collegescholarshipsdigest.com/2015/12/16/how-to-improve-your-gpa/
