PoliticsUPDATED: Six killed And Five Injured in fresh Riyom, Plateau attack by CollinsColz(op):
Six people were killedin an attack on a community in Bachit, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, the spokesperson of the Special Task Force, STF, Salisu Mustapha, has said.
Mr. Mustapha, in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday, confirmed the incident and said five others were injured and have been taken to hospital for medical attention. He added that no arrest has been made but more security operatives were deployed to the troubled area.
“Our commander, Maj. Gen. David Ennetie was there personally and also visited victims alongside the interim administrator of Riyom. We are on the trail of the suspects,” he said.
The spokesperson said the attack started at about 9:00 p.m. on Monday night, while a survivor, who along with others, is on admittance at the Vom Christian Hospital in the area, said it continued until about 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday when they were able to escape.
A preceding attack
Prior to the late night attack in Bachit, armed men had earlier on Monday attacked Shonong, also in Riyom Local Government, with residents saying about a dozen people were killed.
Residents of the area said the attackers were suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that over 40 houses were burnt, while many domestic animals belonging to the villagers were either killed or taken away by the attackers.
According to a survivor, the attackers stormed Shonong community, consisting of four different villages, at about 7 a.m. on Monday, shooting sporadically. He claimed that about 30 people were killed in the attack.
Another survivor, Shom Toma, who sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving medical attention at the Vom Christian Hospital, said the attackers stormed the village in their hundreds, when most of the villagers had gone to the farms, and killed mostly children, women and the aged.
He said he was moulding building blocks around his house when the killings commenced.
Another survivor said about 30 dead bodies have been discovered and a search was on for the injured that escaped into the surrounding bushes. He said many people were missing, among them, children.
Inept security operatives
Shonong is not new to recent violence. The acting village head of Attarkar and that of Shonong village were killed two days before Christmas and were buried 48 hours before Monday’s mass killings.
A Plateau State House of Assembly member representing Riyom constituency, Daniel Dem, while reacting to Monday’s incident, questioned the lack of action by STF in the area.
“If the military are there in the village and the attack took place at about 8 a.m. and lasted till afternoon, then the military have so many questions to answer,” he said.
Mr. Dem visited the victims at Vom Christian Hospital were about 20 survivors were receiving medical attention.
The JTF spokesperson, however, said he had no details of the Shonong attack but that adequate officers had now been posted to all the communities in Riyom.

PoliticsPatience Jonathan Visits New Year Baby In Abuja by CollinsColz(op):
The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Wednesday, visited the first baby of the year at the Gwarimpa General Hospital in Abuja and prayed that he would grow in peace.
The first baby, yet to be named, was born to Mr and Mrs Zubairu at 12.45 a.m. through Caesarean section and weighed 3.5kg at birth.
Jonathan, who was represented by Ms Onyeka Onwenu, the Director-General, National Council for Women Development, said “babies are special gifts from God.
“I wish them God’s blessings, peace and tranquility. The children will grow in peace and will be great because children are special gifts from God,’’ she said to newsmen after the visit.
Also speaking to newsmen, Dr Ademola Onokomaya, the Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, said “our slogan is healthcare based on quality and equity to all.

PoliticsPDP Crisis: Tukur To Know Fate Jan. 8 by CollinsColz(op): 1:29am On Jan 01, 2014
There were indications on Tuesday that the fate of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, would be determined during the party’s National Executive Committee meeting on January 8, 2014.
The PUNCHlearnt that the meeting would be preceded by those of the Board of Trustees and the national caucus of the party on January 7.
A very reliable NEC member said on Tuesday that Tukur’s fate would be discussed during the January 8 meeting since PDP governors were still divided on his continued retention as the national chairman of the ruling party.
It was gathered that while some of the governors believed that it would be suicidal for Tukur to be sacked a year to the general elections, others were of the opinion that his removal would restore confidence in the party.
Our source said apart from Governors Sule Lamido(Jigawa) and Babangida Aliyu(Niger) whose views on the national chairman are well known, some of their colleagues were waiting for the NEC meeting to voice out their opposition to Tukur’s continued leadership of the party.
“The two governors, who are part of the aggrieved seven governors before five of them defected to the All Progressives Congress, are still insisting that the chairman must go. We also know that there are some of their colleagues who are waiting for our next NEC meeting to also kick against Tukur’s continued stay in office.”
But the source, who is a supporter of the national chairman, however, said that there was nothing to warrant his sacking.
He also dismissed the rumours that Tukur was planning to sue the NEC in order to stall any move to remove him from office.
Tukur’s Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Oliver Okpala, who spoke on the telephone with one of our correspondents, said his boss would allow NEC to do its job since he was also member of the body.
Okpala also denied the rumours that Tukur was planning to drag the NEC to court.
He said, “He (Tukur) is part of NEC and cannot take it to court on any issue. Besides, there is no such issue (his removal) before the NEC. So why would he take the body to court? He would allow NEC to do its job on any issue and would not be part of those who want to destroy what he contributed to its building ”
Meanwhile, a fresh crisis is brewing among the national officers of the PDP.
The crisis became public knowledge as the party’s top hierarchy disagreed on the comment made by the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ibrahim Jalo, on the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Martin Elechi.
Elechi was quoted as describing the proposed national conference as a “big joke, waste of time, and a distraction to (President Goodluck) Jonathan.”
The governor was quoted to have also said that he would not be part of the conference.
While responding to the governor’s position, Jalo had said the national dialogue was the product of a PDP-led Federal Government, adding that it was wrong for any member of the party to criticise it.
He had said, “The national conference is a product of the PDP-controlled Federal Government.
“The President is the leader of the party and the national conference is the initiative of the Federal Government.”
He added that it would be out of place for any state not to participate.
However, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, issued a statement dismissing what Jalo said.
Although he did not mention Jalo’s name in his statement, Metuh said the party did not authorise anyone to speak on the matter.
Metuh’s statement on Monday reads, “We wish to clarify unequivocally that the National Working Committee of the PDP never in any manner whatsoever made or authorised any comment on the said report.
“The PDP as a well organised democratic institution has duly established channel of external communication which is carried out with the utmost sense of responsibility after due clarifications on issues.
“It is, therefore, wrong and completely unacceptable for anybody to present statements made by individuals who are not members of the NWC of the PDP on the said report as the official position of the party; more so when such statements were made without due clarifications from the governor.”
Investigations by our correspondent showed that the fear of further defection from the PDP by its elected officials was one of the reasons the party disowned Jalo.
The party recently lost five of its governors and 37 members of the House of Representatives to the APC.
This, it was gathered, made Metuh to say that “the entire NWC restates total commitment and respect to all our elected officials, especially PDP governors who remain strong pillars of the party.”
Metuh also cautioned all aides of elected officers at all levels of the party to desist from rushing to make statements that cast aspersion on PDP’s elected officials, especially its governors.

“It is even irritating that he plans to spend several millions to feed the animals in his zoo when more than half of Nigerians don’t have food to eat.

PoliticsJonathan Reduces Aso Rock’s Billion Naira Feeding Bill By N494 Million by CollinsColz(op): 7:20am On Dec 31, 2013
With the economy in a bind and a growing public anger over his administration’s management of the economy, President Goodluck Jonathan has taken a rare decision to spend less on food and consumables at the presidential villa in 2014.
As the budget comes under an increasingly intense media scrutiny, President Jonathan has given up nearly half of the presidency’s giant feeding bill of N1 billion, a proposal, two years ago, that shocked Nigerians and stirred public anger.
The feeding cost has been lowered by N494 million or 45.5 percent in the 2014 budget proposal sent to the National Assembly by the president.
The 2014 request, if approved by lawmakers, will be the lowest amount of naira spent by the State House on feeding and allied costs in two years.
In the 2012 budget presented in late 2011 by the president, his office and residence as well as those of Vice President Namadi Sambo were allocated an obscene N993 million for refreshments, catering services and purchase of kitchen equipment.
That year, approximately N477million was assigned for foodstuffs and “catering materials supplies” for the president’s office, while an additional N293 million was to provide “refreshment and meals” for the president’s comfort at his home and office.
An extra N45.4 million was earmarked to buy canteen and kitchen equipment for the president’s household, although similar purchases were made the previous year.
For the vice president’s office in 2012, foodstuff, catering and materials supplies were scheduled to cost N104 million, while cooking gas and cooking fuel was to consume N6.2 million.
Refreshments and meals at Mr. Sambo’s office and home were estimated at N20.8million, and another N45.4 million was allocated for purchase of kitchen and household equipment at the state house headquarters.
The funds allocated to feed Aso Rock in 2012 were sufficient to pay about 1,200 of the nation’s growing unemployed graduates a monthly salary of N70, 000 for a year.
That revelation at the time, published by PREMIUM TIMES, aggravated public anger and revved up resistance to government’s plan, within the same period, to remove petrol subsidy, and jack up the pump price of petrol.
A terribly embarrassed presidency quickly scrambled a review of the budget, cutting down the proposed feeding bill by N147 million.
But in the two years that have followed, the government has significantly lowered the feeding bill for the first and second families and their offices, raising the question how the huge 2012 bill may have been utilized, since the same purpose is now being served at a cheaper rate.
In 2013, the presidency’s feeding was put at N717.3 million. For 2014, the figure has been scaled downward to N542.8 million, the new budget shows.
In 2014, for the president’s office and residence, food stuff and catering materials supplies will cost N200.8 million, while refreshment and meals will gulp N162.6 million.
Cooking gas and fuel will be purchased at N 9.4 million while a new set of canteen and kitchen equipment-the same purchase that has consistently occurred for years-will cost the nation N131.8 million.
For the Vice president’s office, food stuff and catering materials supplies will cost N23.9 million, refreshment and meals N10.8 million, while cooking gas and fuel cost would be N3.6 million.
The figures are subject to National Assembly’s approval.
Federal revenues have dwindled during the past year with the government so terribly cash-strapped that it is unable to pay university teachers and execute key developmental projects.
“It’s all gimmicks”
Analysts however believe the presidential belt-tightening, by a regime known more for wasting billions on servicing the exotic tastes of administration officials and outright stealing of scarce public funds, is not an enough indication that the government is committed to fiscal responsibility.
“The reduction in the feeding cost was done specifically to hoodwink the public due to last year’s public outcry,” Olanrewaju Suraju, chairman of the Civil Society Network Against Corruption, CSNAC, told PREMIUM TIMES Tuesday morning. “There are lots of other outlandish spendings proposed in the budget and I’m sure that what he reduced in the feeding cost, he has smuggled it into the budget elsewhere.”
Yomi Ogunsanya, an Abuja-based lawyer spoke along the same line.
“It’s a good development that he (President Jonathan) has reduced his feeding bill but that is not enough,” Mr. Ogunsanya said. “If he wants to be taken seriously, he should cut down on the size of his delegations to foreign trips, and reduce outrageous allowances for his aides and other officials.
“He should learn from Malawi President Joyce Banda, who is selling her country’s presidential aircraft to feed the poor. It is unacceptable that he (Jonathan) is planning to buy a new aircraft at a time more than half of our people are hungry.

PoliticsKwara Council Discovers 339 Ghost Workers by CollinsColz(op): 1:04pm On Dec 29, 2013
Omu-Aran – Alhaji Luqman Owolewa, the Chairman of Irepodun Local Government Council in Kwara, on Sunday, said the council discovered 339 “ghost workers’’ on its monthly pay roll.
Owolewa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Omu-Aran, headquarters of the council, that an audit committee would soon be set up to scrutinise the council’s pay system.
He said the audit committee became necessary in order to fish out more “ghost workers’’ and correct other anomalies in the council’s pay process.
The chairman said that the result of his assessment of the workers few weeks after assumption of duty showed that out of the 839 workers on the council’s pay roll, only 500 were genuine staff members.
He added that “when I assumed duty in November, I was surprised at the few number of workers reporting for duty and this prompted my undertaking a personal assessment to know what was wrong.
“I immediately ordered the stoppage of the salaries of those workers we could not identify physically.
“It was there that we discovered lots of discrepancies in the council’s past employment processes and we found out that only 500 of the 839 workers of the council were genuine staff members.’’
Owolewa said N2.5 million was now saved monthly following the process embarked upon to regularise the pay system.
He noted that the council had embarked on the execution of some community-based projects with direct impact on the lives of the people in the area.
He listed some of the projects to include the rehabilitation of township roads, boreholes, culverts and drains to enhance human and vehicular movement.
He urged unemployed youths in the area to register with the council for an opportunity to get a job as the state government was in the process of employing no fewer than 800 youths. (NAN)

PoliticsOby Ezekwesili blasts Nigerian lawmakers for “disrespecting” Okonjo-Iweala by CollinsColz(op):
A former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, on Saturday lambasted members of the House of Representatives for their treatment of the Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Mrs. Ezekwesili, a former Vice President of the World Bank, accused the lawmakers of not being ‘decorous’ when the House of Representatives Committee on Finance walked Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala out of their meetingon Thursday.
“Gosh! Our National Assembly &lawmakers URGENTLY need SERIOUS TRAINING on Respectful Workplace Practices,” Mrs Ezekwesili said on Saturday morning on her twitter handle, @obyezeks.
According to her, more is expected of lawmakers as the only reason Nigeria is called a democracy is because of the National Assembly.
“These lawmakers need know this and be decorous!. That fellow that was blatantly disrespectful to Okonjo-Iweala may not in the real world qualify to be her Research Assistant. Let’s face facts,” she said.
“I keep coming back to the issue of the language of disagreement in our Democracy. We can’t afford to keep it as base and militaristic as it is.”
Mrs. Ezekwesili, who was also a former minister of solid minerals, said she was responsive to the National Assembly when she was in government and never failed to turn up and engage them whenever they called.
“I knew Okonjo-Iweala to be same. Surely, if the Committee Chairman was angry at her for having said she was slightly indisposed, she still deserved fair hearing. I expect our lawmakers to ask the toughest of questions in the discharge of their oversight role. But, do so with plenty of grace- with decorum,” she said.
According to her, the language of disagreement matters a great deal in nurturing the culture of public debate which is core to democracies.
“Let’s get it right! I am huge on that language of disagreement. Disagree all you like but keep it clean of abuse and I will stay engaged. Abusers? Not on my TL!
“On the substance of the “50 Questions for Okonjo-Iweala.” It is a MIXED GRILL that could have benefited from deeper knowledge of Basic Economics,” she said.
The House of Representatives finance committee walked out the minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Thursday, after a brief but stormy session in which lawmakers tasked the minister with 50 questions on the state of the Nigerian economy.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala had earlier presented the budget proposals for 2014 to the Senate and the House of Representatives, before meeting the house finance committee.
The minister said she was indisposed and only responded to her invitation out of respect for the legislature.
But when lawmakers offered to excuse her due to her health, but with a condition she responds to 50 questions in writing within two weeks, the minister backtracked choosing instead to answer the questions at the meeting.
Exchanges between the minister and the committee chairman, Abdulmumini Jibrin, quickly escalated with Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala accusing the committee of being disrespectful.
“With all due respect, I will not tell your committee that I’m feeling fine when I’m not. We have had good working relationship with your committee; I thought we’ll be treated with courtesy, but the way you’re starting is a bit disturbing,” the minister said.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala’s experience typifies the frosty relationship between the legislature and the executive. The finance minister was chosen by President Goodluck Jonathan to present the budget, which traditionally, since 1999, has been done by the sitting president.
Though Mr. Jonathan did not state his reason for choosing to be represented, he is believed to have avoided the presentation so as not to be booed by opposition lawmakers of the House of Representatives.
The chairman of the committee could not be reached for comments as at the time of publishing this report.

SportsWorld’s Fastest Man, Usain Bolt, Races Against A Bus by CollinsColz(op): 10:54am On Dec 21, 2013
In Buenos Aires, the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, raced against a bus – and won.
The bus had no chance against the Jamaican sprinter in the 80m exhibition race. Bolt appeared to take it seriously going in, then began to jog, only to pick up his pace again before crossing the finish line.
After beating the bus, Bolt then posed with the driver afterwards and also raced a 120m sprint against fellow Jamaicans.
Bolt, who won gold medals in two consecutive Olympic Games, in Beijing and London, said he had his eyes set on winning a third time in the Rio De Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
He said, “One of my main goals is to go to the Rio Olympics, as I was saying, to do it again. To defend my titles and it’s never been done three times so, for me, that’s me trying to set the bar as high as possible, just to push the barrier.”
The event was part of a number of spectacles being held as the ‘World’s Fastest Man’ tours the South American country.
Bolt holds three world records. In 2009, he galloped the 200m run at 19.19 seconds. Bolt’s 100m record of 9.58 seconds is just about four seconds short of the record held by the world fastest cheetah over the same distance.
All hail the ‘Lightning Bolt’
Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive and the richest runner in the history of track and field with a personal net worth of $30m. He is world famous sprinter of Jamaican origin, with a net worth that grew by more than $20m in 2012. After winning the 100m and 200m men’s finals at the 2012 London Olympics, Bolt became the first sprinter to win back to back sprint doubles at the games. He is also the current world record holder and the current Olympic champion for the 100m, 200m and 4×100m relay athletic events.
Bolt was born on August 21, 1986 in Sherwood Content, a small town in Trelawny, Jamaica, where he grew up with his parents, Wellesley and Jennifer Bolt, along with his two siblings. Bolt grew up in a middle class background and enjoyed a stable childhood. Most of his childhood was spent in taking part in different games like cricket and football.
He is one of the few people to emerge triumphant in the junior, youth and senior levels of a track and field event. He is the first sportsman to break world records for three different sprint events in a single Olympic games. His exploits have earned him the well-deserved title of “Lightning Bolt”.
The success enjoyed by Bolt in his sporting career has turned him into a rich man. In 2012, Bolt made an estimated $20.3m in salary and endorsements. His biggest paycheck came from the German shoe company, Puma, which is paying Bolt $9m a year to wear their shoes at all times, on and off the track. That number is especially impressive when you consider that Nike’s biggest shoe contracts are usually no more than $1m per year for some of the world’s biggest athletes. But the investment has paid off for Puma, which has seen sales increase by $300m after endorsing the world’s fastest man. Bolt brought home additional millions from huge endorsing deals with Visa; Nissan; Gatorade; Telecom firm, Virgin Media; Swiss watch giant, Hublot; and Mobile gaming company, RockLive.
In 2010, Bolt released a best-selling autobiography, titled ‘Faster than Lightning’, that came with a multi-million dollar advance from publisher, Harper Collins. Bolt also commands appearance fees ranging from $250,000 to as much as $500,000 to compete at track and field events throughout the world. Amazingly, Bolt’s net worth is expected to explode even more in the coming years, thanks to his gold medal dominating performance at the last Olympic games. If Bolt stays on pace, he should be worth well over $100m by the time the 2016 Olympic games arrive.
The fabulous wealth earned till date ensures the sprint legend enjoys a very luxurious lifestyle. He owns a luxury home at his native place in Jamaica. Recently, he acquired a Rum Cay Island ocean front property in the Bahamas, worth millions of dollars. Bolt has a penchant for very fast and expensive cars. He doesn’t own just one car, he owns a fleet of exotic vehicles.
He drives around in luxury cars like a BMW M3; a 2013 Nissan GT-R; and a Ferrari F430 Spider, priced at a whopping $217,000. He is known to hire private jets to fly him around the world.
Manchester United and Real Madrid are two of his favourite clubs. He has participated in charity cricket matches to raise money for noteworthy causes and enjoys listening to Reggae music in his spare time.
During a four-day trip to Kenya in 2009, Bolt adopted a baby cheetah, named ‘Lightning Bolt’. The world’s fastest man paid $13,700 to formally adopt the cheetah. The adoption process also meant that Bolt would be paying $3,000 a year to care for the cheetah being raised at an animal orphanage in Nairobi. Incidentally, cheetahs are the animal kingdom’s fastest sprinter.
When asked if he was afraid of cheetahs, Bolt said: “Yes, I was, but not anymore.”

Nigeria celebrates 100 years of amalgamation in 2014
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Pius Anyim, on Friday unveiled the centenary flag in preparation for the 2014 celebration of 100 years of Nigeria’s amalgamation.
Mr. Anyim, while unveiling the flag in Abuja, said that the centenary was based on the unity and progress the country had recorded.
The ceremony involved the formal presentation of the centenary flag by the National Orientation Agency, NOA, to the SGF.
The flag was designed by the NOA in partnership with a private organisation.
Mr. Anyim said that the centenary flag, which he described as the symbol of unity, provided Nigerians the opportunity to reaffirm their faith in the country.
The SGF said the symbol and signs that represented the country had a lot to tell about what the country stood for, noting that the national flag had become the unifying factor in the country.
“This flag should not only serve the purpose of centenary, but it should remain as a symbol of our unity even for years to come,” the SGF said.
Mr. Anyim said the centenary should be made an indelible event in the history of the country, and urged Nigerians to hold it dearly and make sure it succeeded.
He added that it would spur all Nigerians to build a more prosperous country and that the country would remain an indivisible entity.
The NOA Director-General, Mike Omeri, said the country could only be defined by its symbols as they served as clarion call for Nigerians to identify with.
Mr. Omeri said the symbol of any country should engender the spirit of patriotism because the centenary flag symbolised a new Nigeria making steady progress.
He commended the SGF for his untiring effort at re-awakening the consciousness of Nigerians toward the centenary.
Mr. Omeri called on Nigerians to celebrate their symbol, adding that there was no other country they could call theirs except Nigeria.

Super Eagles goal keeper, Vincent Enyeama has been voted the best player in France’s Ligue 1 for the month of November.
Enyeama also won the UNFP prize, set aside for the league’s best performer, for the month of October.
This is the second consecutive month the Nigeria international is winning the prestigious award, having won the accolade in October.
•Vincent Enyeama of Lille
He racked up 59 percent of the votes on offer to beat off competition from PSG superstar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic who nicked 32 percent of the votes to finish in second place.
Enyeama and Ibra will come face-to-face in direct competition when PSG hosts Lille OSC at the Parc des Princes on match day 19 of Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Olympique Marseille midfielder, Florian Thauvin was a distant third in the overall classification with 9 percent of the votes.
Enyeama picks up the award for the second successive month despite narrowly failing to break Gaetan Huard’s long-standing record of clean sheets in Ligue 1 after conceding as Lille lost 0-1 to Girondins Bordeaux at the Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas on match day 17.
The 31-year-old has been in great form this season for Lille OSC where he has conceded in just three of the club’s 17 league games this season.
He recently told supersport.com that his displays have been divinely inspired.
“I don’t do these things. It’s God. God has always guided me in my career and he has been responsible for all I have been doing,” he said.
The UNFP trophy will be presented to the Nigerian shot-stopper before the Ligue 1 game between Lille OSC and Stade de Reims on Sunday, 12 January, 2014 at Stade Pierre Mauroy
