Politics / Freezing Benue Account Unconstitutional – NGF by ComrDonSplash(m): 3:02pm On Aug 09, 2018
Says EFCC action ‘ll shutdown govt —Applauds Osinbajo for DSS boss sack By Johnbosco Agbakwuru ABUJA – CHAIRMAN of Nigeria’s Governors Forum, NGF, and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari has said that freezing accounts of Benue State government by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was an attempt to shut down the state.
Governor Yari also described the action of EFCC as unconstitutional, and wrong, especially as the state was still battling with security challenges.

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, Yari said the federal government should not allow security agencies to become lawless. According to him, “The freezing of any account of the state government, whether Benue or anywhere is unconstitutional and is not right. That is shutting down government. Government must spend, most especially Benue that is facing insecurity challenges. “Well, we don’t know why the EFCC took the action. But if indeed EFFC freezed the account, from my point of view, it is wrong. “This government will not sit down and oversee unlawful operation from the security agencies. From what happened yesterday (Tuesday, Daura sack), everyone can understand that government is following due process and the laws of Nigeria. “For one to just send security agencies to shut down the National Assembly, and the action that followed, that is what gave credit to this government by local and international community. “Similar thing had happened in 2011 and 2014 respectively, but nothing was done about it, this time around, government said enough is enough. But the government of Muhammadu Buhari is following due process and will never oversee an unlawful activity by any security agency. So in the case of Benue, I believe something must be done.”

Politics / Imo: Madumere Reacts To His Impeachment As Deputy Governor, Blames Okorocha by ComrDonSplash(m): 3:03pm On Aug 01, 2018
Impeached Deputy Governor of Imo state, Eze Madumere, has accused Governor Rochas Okorocha, of being behind his impeachment.

Madumere was on Monday impeached by the state House of Assembly over alleged gross misconduct.

But the action was in defiance to the ruling of a state High Court presided over by Justice Ben Iheka on July 30, restraining the legislators and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Paschal Nnadi, from any further moves regarding the impeachment process.

Reacting, the impeached Deputy Governor in a statement by his media aide, Uche Onwuchekwa described his removal from office as illegal, saying neither the state House of Assembly nor the seven-man panel set up by the Chief Judge of the state, Paschal Nnadi, invited him to any of their sittings.

Madumere stated that the State House of Assembly was being used as a willing tool in the hands of the governor for political witch hunting.

The statement reads in part: “The state house of Assembly has become a mere stooge in the hands of the governor.

“In disobedience to the restraining order against the the Chief Judge, the seven-man panel, Speaker and members of Imo State House of Assembly from further action on the controversial impeachment proceeding against the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere, the House of Assembly in Gestapo manner, has removed the Deputy Governor of the state from office.

“The Presiding Judge of High Court 8, Justice Benjamin Iheka had restrained the seven-man panel of Inquiry constituted by the Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Paschal Nnadi, the Chief Judge, Speaker and members of Imo State House of Assembly over a matter brought before the court that bothers on constitutional breaches in the procedure adopted to remove the Deputy Governor from the office.

“The Acho Ihim-led faction of the members of the House sponsored by Governor Okorocha against the Court Order and the rule of law illegally removed the Deputy Governor in a kangaroo manner.

“Against the requirement of the law, Prince Madumere was not given fair hearing as he was neither invited during the sitting of the investigative committee in the House of Assembly nor by the seven-man panel set up the Chief Judge.”

Foreign Affairs / Gunmen Storm Government Building, Take Many Hostage by ComrDonSplash(m): 12:35pm On Jul 31, 2018
Gunmen stormed a government building after multiple explosions in an ongoing attack in Jalalabad on Tuesday that has left at least eight people wounded, the latest in a series of assaults in the eastern Afghan city. At least two blasts were heard before the attackers entered the compound of the refugees and repatriations department, said Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province. Several foreign organisations are also in the vicinity. “Security forces have been deployed to the site to kill the terrorists and rescue those people who are stuck inside the department,” Khogyani said. A number of people have been taken hostage by the attackers, said Zabiullah Zmarary, a provincial council member. “We don’t know the exact number,” he added. Before the attack began representatives of foreign donors and agencies were meeting department employees inside the building, Khogyani said. It is not clear if the meeting was still under way when the attackers entered the compound. At least eight people have been wounded and a “large number” of employees had been rescued, Khogyani said. “I saw a black Corolla car drop three armed men at the gate of the refugees and repatriations department,” a witness told AFP. At least one of the men blew himself up at the gate and two others entered the building, the witness said. An AFP reporter could hear gunfire as security forces swarmed into the area, and a plume of thick, black smoke rose into the sky above the department compound. The Taliban denied involvement in the attack in a WhatsApp message sent to journalists. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which comes three days after militants raided a midwife training centre in Jalalabad. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack that left at least three people dead and several wounded. Jalalabad has been the scene of multiple attacks in recent months that have killed dozens, as US and Afghan forces continue offensives against militants. – Civilians under attack – The latest attack in Jalalabad came as a roadside bomb which hit a passenger bus in the western province of Farah killed at least eight people and wounded about 40. In a separate incident, 22 passengers travelling on a Kabul-bound bus in the eastern province of Paktia were kidnapped by gunmen on Monday night. Officials blamed the Taliban for both incidents. Most of the attacks in Jalalabad have been claimed by IS, which has a relatively small but potent presence in Afghanistan, mainly in the east and north. It is not clear why the militants targeted the refugees and repatriations department, but government buildings are frequently hit. On July 11 gunmen raided an education department compound in Jalalabad, sparking an hours-long battle with security forces. At least 11 people were killed in the attack. All were employees of the education department branch and included the director. A suicide bomb attack claimed by IS on a crowd of Afghan Sikhs and Hindus in Jalalabad on July 1 killed 19 people and wounded 21. IS first emerged in Afghanistan in 2014 and quickly established a stronghold in Nangarhar, which borders Pakistan. Intensified aerial and ground operations against the militants have failed to dislodge them.
