Kwankwaso, who spoke with journalists last night in Kano, pointed out that he had been studying the problems facing the country over the years and had come to the conclusion that he possesses the requisite experience and expertise to tackle the issues and give Nigerians and Nigeria a new lease of life. He explained that given his rich background as a long-standing public servant, an engineer and a one-time Defence Minister, he truly understands what the country needs in order to become great among the comity of nations. The governor said the country needed someone like him, who had seen the nation from various angles to be able to solve its problems and advance the interest of Nigerians at all levels. The governor said that although he was still consulting with other stakeholders across the length and breadth of Nigeria on his next political move, he would make a formal declaration for the presidential contest at the appropriate time. Kwankwaso said that more than anything else, the worsening security threat to Nigeria and the seeming inability of the administration to address it were unacceptable as it had driven away over four million Nigerians into Chad, Niger Republic and Cameroun as refugees. “The situation is so bad that apart from those displaced by the insurgents, many other Nigerians have been hospitalised while others have gone into hiding just to save their lives, while the system continues to give assurance of victory,” the governor lamented. “So many Nigerians have also been displaced in Chibok, Gwoza and Bama as well as other places in the country. This is not a good thing for Nigeria and we need to rise up and find a lasting solution to the problem, which is not beyond us. “A situation whereby Nigeria’s leadership is encouraging division is not good for the unity of Nigeria. We should stop abusing the very people we are supposed to protect and give them a sense of hope and dignity,” Kwankwaso noted. The governor said that in a bid to give his state a new lease of life, his administration had undertaken major infrastructural projects including three major flyover bridges, major roads and water projects across the state in addition to establishing 23 big dams for water and energy supply. |

Ebola virus: CAF orders relocation of matches from Sierra Leone and Guinea The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered Sierra Leone and Guinea to relocate their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers because of the Ebola virus outbreak in their countries. CAF also wrote to its other member-associations to inform them of its decision to ask the two countries to relocate their home games in the AFCON qualifiers. It said in the letter that the move was “a preventative measure to avoid mass gatherings that could facilitate the spread of the virus’’. The continental football governing body also said the measure would remain in place until mid-September. It means at least the first two rounds of matches, scheduled for between Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, and 10 September, will be affected. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Health Organisation has till date reported 1,848 cases of Ebola. These cases have resulted in 1,013 deaths, mainly in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Sierra Leone had already said it was not hosting matches until further notice, and it had asked Ghana if it can host its Group D matches there. |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said Tuesday’s defection of Osun governor, Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola, to All Peoples Congress (APC) would not affect outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in the state. The Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Gani OlaOluwa, stated this in a statement on Tuesday in Osogbo. Describing the defection as “inglorious’’, Olaoluwa said that there was the need to pray for Oyinlola as he “begins a political journey with professional liars.’’ “We respect the decision of Oyinlola, but we are also expecting him to be man enough to send a congratulatory message to us after the Aug. 9 election. “For the PDP in Osun, we are resolute and stand as a family to rescue our people from political vultures and voodoo personalities,’’ he said. Oyinlola had, at a rally of the APC held in Osogbo on Tuesday ahead of Saturday’s election, formally pitched tent with the party. At the occasion, Oyinlola said, “ I decided to take my destiny in my hands as I am no longer wanted in the PDP. “I have discovered that all the former governors in Osun are now in the APC and I decided to move with the tide.’’ (NAN) |
Recent U.S. surveillance flights over northeastern Nigeria showed what appeared to be large groups of girls held together in remote locations, raising hopes among domestic and foreign officials that they are among the group that Boko Haram abducted from a boarding school in April, U.S. and Nigerian officials said. The surveillance suggests that at least some of the 219 schoolgirls still held captive haven’t been forced into marriage or sex slavery, as had been feared, but instead are being used as bargaining chips for the release of prisoners. The U.S. aerial imagery matches what Nigerian officials say they hear from northern Nigerians who have interacted with the Islamist insurgency: that some of Boko Haram’s most famous set of captives are getting special treatment, compared with the hundreds of other girls the group is suspected to have kidnapped. Boko Haram appears to have seen the schoolgirls as of higher value, given the global attention paid to their plight, those officials said. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who faces re-election in February, is under political pressure to secure the girls’ release, with some people urging him to agree to a prisoner swap. His government has ruled out a rescue operation, saying it is unwilling to risk the girls’ lives, or a prisoner swap. “We don’t exchange innocent people for criminals. That is not in the cards,” said Mr. Jonathan’s spokesman, Reuben Abati, last week in an interview.

The federal government on Wednesday confirmed five new cases of Ebola in Lagos and a second death from the virus, bringing the total number of infections in sub-Saharan Africa’s largest city to seven. “Nigeria has now recorded 7 confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease (EVB)” health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said. Those who have died include the “index patient,” a Liberian who brought the virus to Lagos on July 20, and a nurse who treated him, the minister added. “All the Nigerians diagnosed with EBV were primary contacts” of Patrick Sawyer, who worked for Liberia’s finance ministry and contracted the virus from his sister, Chukwu said. He traveled to Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, for a meeting of west African officials. Visibly sick upon arrival at the international airport in Lagos, officials said he was immediately transferred to the First Consultants hospital in the upmarket Ikoyi neighborhood. He died in quarantine on July 25 and the hospital has since been closed. The five Ebola patients are being treated in an isolation ward in Lagos, the minister told journalists. Since breaking out earlier this year, the tropical virus has claimed almost 900 lives and infected more than 1,603 people across west Africa. The other cases have been reported in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. |

Iago Aspas has told Spanish radio that his former Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez has been "treated like a murderer" by FIFA. Uruguay international Suarez is serving a four-month worldwide suspension from football-related activity after biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match in the Brazilian city of Natal on June 24. The ban -- which also precludes him from his national team's next nine matches -- does not apply to transfers, meaning that the 27-year-old was able to complete a 75 million pound move to Barcelona last week. But Suarez cannot play for Barcelona, train with his teammates or even attend their matches until late October. He was also barred from attending the news conference held by Barca to announce his arrival. Aspas, who completed a season-long loan move from Liverpool to Sevilla on Monday, believes that the Uruguayan has been treated harshly. "They are treating Luis like a murderer and not like a footballer," he told Cadena COPE. "There are murderers who pay less for what they have done. To not let him be presented by Barcelona, to train or to enter the stadium is too much." |

It’s getting close to three months since more than 200 girls were abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno by Boko Haram and they are yet to be found. Senator Khalifa Ahmed Zanna of Borno Central who spoke in a recent interview with SaharaTV on the condition of the missing Chibok girls, conspiracy theories surrounding Boko Haram, the ramifications of the group’s terrorism and other issues, disclosed that the girls are being raped and the terrorists are filming it and releasing the video for the public to see. He said though he didn’t see the video himself, someone who did, narrated to him, saying after raping the girls, they shoot them. He described a scene where a young girl after being raped was on her knees begging her attacker to be patient and not kill her yet. Zanna said, "Somebody told me that they were shown being raped, and in turn, it is the girl who was raped that came out kneeling down and begging the man to be patient. Do you know the reason why? They said when they rape them they shoot them. Therefore the girl after being raped, she curled down to the man, kneeling down and begging him to please be patient."Read more The senator explained that the deadly sect are now out of funds and are not getting enough food, so they are going from one village to the other, to loot the little the villagers have, while adding that they do not even have any opportunity of getting food anymore as the villagers have moved into cities or neighboring countries. The senator who feels the Nigerian federal government and military are not doing enough, urged President Jonathan to change his priorities, saying, "It is not this presidency that he should look at,” said the senator, “but let him look at the future of Nigeria, and the future of Nigerians." Earlier in May, the lawmaker had said he won’t tell where the abducted girls are being kept again because he had told the Federal Government where they are likely being kept before Boko Haram released a video showing the girls in an unidentified area. More than two weeks after the governorship election in Ekiti State, the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the South-West, says it has finally revealed ways through which the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, allegedly rigged the election. It could be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had on 22 June, 2014, declared Ayo Fayose of PDP as the winner of the Ekiti governorship election held on 21 June, 2014. According to the results of the election announced by INEC, Fayose garnered the most votes in all the local government in Ekiti ahead of the incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi of the APC and Bamidele Opeyemi of the Labour Party. Reviewing the outcome of the Ekiti election through a communique released at the end of a caucus meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday, 1 July, 2014, the APC said the election was far from being free and fair. The party claimed the events preceding, during and after the election indicated that it was not free and fair, alleging the election was rigged in a manner the country had never witnessed before. APC also claimed that there were perceived militarization of the electoral process, noting that was aptly demonstrated by the restriction of movements of people and the barring of APC governors from entering the state for the final rally of the party on Thursday June 19, 2014. “As a matter of fact, Ekiti State was factually sealed up to all non-PDP personnel while the squad of Musiliu Obanikoro, the Minister of State for Defence, Jelili Adesiyan, Minister of Police Affairs, Kasamu Buruji and Iyiola Omisore allegedly had free days going in and out of Ekiti unmolested and ferrying goods suspected to be ballot papers, cash, arms and ammunitions from Akure airport into Ekiti," the statement read. |

Peter Pham, a Nigeria scholar at the Atlantic Council think-tank in Washington, has revealed that most of Boko Haram’s weapons are not bought, but stolen from the Nigerian military troop. This was disclosed as Reuters interviewed more than a dozen current and former U.S. officials who closely follow Boko Haram. The obtained information provides the most complete picture to date of how the group finances its activities. Speaking in an interview with Reuters, Pham said the terrorists pay local youths a few pennies a day to track and report on Nigerian troops movements. U.S. officials acknowledge that the weapons that have served Washington so well in its financial warfare against other terrorist groups are proving less effective against Boko Haram. On how the group finances its activities U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield said they suspect the insurgents are surviving on very lucrative criminal activities that involve kidnappings. Related: Ethiopian PM Reveals Where Terrorists Get Funding From The U.S. Treasury normally relies on a range of measures to track financial transactions of terrorist groups, but Boko Haram appears to operate largely outside the banking system. According to some of the officials who were interviewed, Boko Haram’s inner leadership is security savvy and so they use hard-to-track human couriers to move cash around the country. They also rely on local funding sources and engaging in only limited financial relationships with other extremists groups. "They’re quite sophisticated in terms of shielding all of these activities from legitimate law enforcement officials in Africa and certainly our own intelligence efforts trying to get glimpses and insight into what they do," a former U.S. military official said. The Treasury Department had in statement declared that the United States has seen evidence that Boko Haram has received financial support from al-Qaeda, an offshoot of the jihadist group founded by Osama bin Laden. But officials with deep knowledge of the sect’s finances say that any links with al-Qaeda or its affiliates are inconsequential to Boko Haram’s overall funding. |
Outgone Super Eagles’ boss, Stephen Keshi, has been offered N168 million for a new two-year deal to remain at his post. The contract ups to N7 million Keshi’s monthly salary. He was being paid, until the ouster of the Super Eagles from the World Cup and an end to his contract, a monthly salary of N5 million. The loss in the Round of 16 match to the Les Blues of France marked the end of the contract. The Eagle Online reliably gathered that the plan to offer Keshi an improved deal came amid confusion over the status of his employment with the Nigeria Football Federation. The Big Boss, who is yet to append his signature to the new deal, was said to have complained about the clauses contained in the new contract papers. It was also learnt that the Nigeria Football Federation has put in place plans to hire a foreign coach to be assisted by a local coach should Keshi reject the new offer. On the contrary, the AFCON 2013 winning coach told The Eagle Online that he would insist that the football house provides him with an official accommodation and a car to function. Keshi told The Eagle Online: “My contract effectively ended with the Super Eagles ouster from the World Cup. “So, there is no reason resigning from the job. “However, we are yet to agree a new contract. “So I remain a free agent until otherwise.” http://theeagleonline.com.ng/keshi-offered-n-168b-two-year-deal/ |
A man, believed to be the son of the Emir of Ringim, have been detained on suspicion of organizing a suicide bomb attack at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano State. The match between Nigeria and France may have come and gone, but the controversies the encounter generated are yet to douse. Latest report on the match indicates that some Nigerian football fans attacked the wife of captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Joseph Yobo, over the performance of the skipper in the match. It could be recalled that Yobo, who made his 100th cap on Monday, 30 June, 2014 and later announced his retirement after the match, scored an own goal late on in the Nigeria versus France match. It was gathered that some football fans, who were pained by the defeat, took their anger out on his wife, Adaeze Yobo, calling her out on social media. And instead of ignoring the jibes, Adaeze allegedly took to her Instagram page to fire back at the many critics who, she felt, insulted her family and blamed her hubby for Super Eagles’ ouster. Though she has since deleted the post, but below is what Adaeze said: "All you hateful people that didn’t even realise it was own goal at first Heck, most of you all didn’t even watch that last minute part of the match that’s if Nepa gave you light to watch the game at all. But as soon as they confirmed it was own goal by yobo, you all be like let’s go ham on his wife (that b**ch). |

Despite not having a superb performance for Nigeria at the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, latest reports reveal that Chelsea are ready to allow Emmanuel Emenike to join them for €19 million. Dailymail reports that the English club have been approached by the Turkish club Fenerbahce on the Nigerian star. Emenike scored 12 goals in 28 league games as Fenerbahce won the Super Lig last season. Many Nigerian football fans believe the 27-year-old striker played below expectations for the Super Eagles at the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Nigeria was defeated 2-0 by France on Monday, 30 June, 2014. Their World Cup campaign was ended in the round of 16. In a related development, the Blues is reported to has agreed a two-year deal with Tiago Mendes. The 33-year-old is joining as a free agent after his contract ran out with Atletico Madrid. The Portuguese made 23 La Liga appearances for the recently-crowned Spanish champions last season and returns to Stamford Bridge after nine years away. He spent just one season with Chelsea before leaving for Lyon in 2005. However, his 12 months with the Blues were certainly successful – in total he won three trophies: the Community Shield, the League Cup and the Premier League, scoring four goals in 34 league appearances.

Good news for those trying for a baby - scientists have found that eating a big breakfast could boost your chances of conceiving. But while we're not convinced tucking into a full English holds the answer to your prayers, one thing's for sure, food and fertility are intrinsically linked so having the right balance of vitamins and minerals in your diet is essential. But in addition to a healthy balanced diet full of essential nutrients, there are also a number of foods you should avoid if you really want to increase your pregnancy prospects. Below is a list of fertility-boosting foods packed with the most important vitamins and minerals for a healthy reproductive system. 1. Bananas The magic nutrient: Vitamin B6. This is one of the most important vitamins in aiding conception as it regulates the hormones. A B6 deficiency can lead to irregular menstruation and can also lead to poor egg and sperm development. 2. Asparagus The magic nutrient: Folic acid. Studies have found that folic acid can help reduce the risk of ovulatory failure. Women are also strongly advised to take folic acid supplements when trying to conceive. 3. Shellfish The magic nutrient: B12. Studies have suggested a link between B12 deficiency and abnormal oestrogen levels that may interfere with implantation of the fertilised egg. B12 may also help to strengthen the endometrium lining in egg fertilisation, decreasing the risk of miscarriage. 4. Eggs The magic nutrient: Vitamin D. A study by Yale University took Vitamin D measurements from 67 infertile women and found that only 7% of them had normal vitamin D levels, while the other 93% had either insufficient of clinical deficiency. They also found that none of the patients with PCOS had normal vitamin D levels. 5. Almonds The magic nutrient: Vitamin E. Studies suggest vitamin E can improve sperm health in men. A deficiency of vitamin E has also been linked to infertility in female rats. If you’re not convinced that an experiment with rats is evidence enough, it's also an antioxidant that helps to protect sperm and egg DNA. 6. Citrus fruit The magic nutrient: Vitamin C. A study in which infertile men were given 1,000mg of vitamin C twice daily, found that their sperm count and motility (their ability to move properly towards an egg) were improved. The vitamin is also said to improve hormone balance in women. 7. Tofu The magic nutrient: Iron. According to fertility expert, Hethir Rodriguez, “Studies have shown that women who do not get sufficient amounts of iron may suffer lack of ovulation and possibly poor egg health, which can inhibit pregnancy at a rate 60% higher than those with sufficient iron stores in their blood.” 8. Salmon The magic nutrient: Selenium. This mineral produces antioxidants that protect the eggs and sperm from free radicals. It can help prevent chromosome breakage, which is known to cause birth defects and miscarriages. Research also suggests that selenium may also make sperm more fertile. 9. Peas The magic nutrient: Zinc. Increasing zinc levels in infertile men has been shown to boost sperm levels, improve the form, function and quality of male sperm and decrease male fertility. For women, a lack of zinc can lead to an imbalance of oestrogen and progesterone. 10. Mackerel The magic nutrient: Essential fatty acids. These are, um, essential, for a strong reproductive system in women. DHA, one of the fatty acids found in fish oil has a significant impact on sperm health. A fatty acid deficiency leads to an increase in cholesterol in the sperm membrane which prevents sperm from proper maturation. |
It's not easy getting eight hours of sleep per night. For those of us who are overstressed and sleep-deprived, there’s a healthy way—10 actually—to boosts energy and fuels workouts without the pending sugar crash that comes along with energy drinks. Energy-boosting foods that are probably already in your kitchen: 1. Eggs “Egg yolks are naturally rich in B-vitamins, which are responsible for converting food into energy and they also have Vitamin D to maintain strong bones. Plus, they’re one of the best sources of protein, which is essential particularly after an intense training session when muscle breakdown occurs the most,” Moskovitz says. Energy Tip: To cut back on saturated fat and excess calories, stick to 1 whole egg plus 2-3 egg whites for a lean energy-filled breakfast. 2. Coffee When you need a quick pick-me-up, a little caffeine can go a long way. “Shown to be effective for improving exercise performance, a cup of coffee might serve as the perfect pre-workout beverage,” Moskovitz says. “Adding skim milk not only offers plenty of calcium and vitamin D for stronger bones, but it also provides carbohydrates for fuel. ” Energy Tip: A small amount of caffeine is all that’s needed to get the benefits. Order an 8-ounce hot or iced coffee. 3. Edamame Soybeans are high in energizing nutrients, particularly B-vitamins, copper and phosphorous. “B-complex vitamins work to break down carbohydrates we consume into glucose for fuel. At the same time they help transport oxygen throughout the body. Both copper and phosphorous are involved in converting eaten food into energy and releasing into cells so its available for use by the body. Edamame also delivers exercise-friendly carbs, fiber and protein for muscles. Just 1 cup of shelled soy beans packs in over 8g of filling fiber and 17g of protein,” Moskovitz says. Energy Tip: To aid in recovery, snack on a handful of edamame after a tough endurance training session. You can also add a touch of salt to replenish lost electrolytes. The magic nutrient: Folic acid. Studies have found that folic acid can help reduce the risk of ovulatory failure. Women are also strongly advised to take folic acid supplements when trying to conceive. 4. Almonds The magic nutrient: Vitamin E. Studies suggest vitamin E can improve sperm health in men. Foods to avoid Red meat: too much red meat increases the amount of ammonia in the body, which can interfere with the implantation of the egg in the uterus. Red meat can also be detrimental for men as it increases acidity and affects sperm activity; sperm perform better in alkaline conditions. Refined sugar: Too much refined sugar can lead to insulin resistance, which can cause or exacerbate PCOS –- a condition that affects ovulation and is one of the leading causes of female infertility. Non-organic chicken: Conventionally raised chicken is full of antibiotics and hormones, which can have a detrimental effect on hormone balance and health. Alcohol: Although it is not essential to give up alcohol if you want to fall pregnant, Danish research found that alcohol intake had a significant effect on infertility success among women above the age of 30 who drank more than seven drinks a week. |
