When Airtel launched its unlimited data plan early last year, it was a big win for internet users in Nigeria. Finally, a major network provider—aside from Starlink—was offering true unlimited data. But there was a condition: this Airtel unlimited plan only worked on special SIM cards that came with specific devices like the Airtel 5G Router, Hertz6 Router, and a few others.

These SIM cards could be used on other devices too, such as smartphones, pocket MiFis, and different routers. This gave users the freedom to enjoy unlimited Airtel data without being stuck to one device.

Airtel’s New Restriction (As of May 15, 2025)

On May 15th, 2025, Airtel made a major change. The SIM cards eligible for the unlimited plan can no longer be used in phones, MiFi devices, or third-party routers. They now only work on Airtel-branded routers.

This means you can no longer pop your unlimited SIM into your phone or MiFi and enjoy data on the go. You have to carry the Airtel router with you, which isn’t practical for many users.

The Good News: There’s a Workaround

If you're frustrated by this new restriction, you're not alone. But the good news is that we’ve found a working solution.
