Thanks NADECO...The situation where almost all the security apparatus are headed by one region and based on divisive religion...doesn't sound as if the establishment wanted any unity in diversity.... |
The pro-democracy group, National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), has said it would collaborate with the Institute for Strategic and Development Studies (ISDS) to hold a conference in Washington, D.C., United States to discuss the future of Nigeria considering the series of separatist agitations in the country. Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday, contact persons for NADECO and ISDS, Comrade Uyi Meshack and Dr. Melford Miller, said the organisations were concerned that the democracy which they fought for was being destroyed by the current leadership in the country. They said NADECO was worried by the agitations from the South-east, South-west and South-south for restructuring or disintegration of the country. They said: “NADECO was established in 1994 in opposition to military dictatorship. In 1994, after the June 12, 1993 crisis, Nigeria faced a serious political crossroads. NADECO rose to the occasion and fought tirelessly to usher in the democratic dispensation that Nigerians have today. “Today, 23 years later, Nigeria is at another political crossroads. Again, NADECO is rising to the occasion. Unlike 1994 when NADECO’s mission was prodemocracy, its current mission is to facilitate good governance and economic development of Nigeria’s political dispensation consistent with international practice and self-determination and decolonisation resolutions of the United Nations. On whether the proposed conference has the blessings of the founding fathers of NADECO, Meshak, who read the statement, said the founding fathers of the organisation were fully involved in the conference and that the press briefing was holding simultaneously in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. He also said politicians across the political divide had agreed to participate in the conference which is designed to address the future of the country. “A consensus seems to have emerged among the political titans that Nigeria urgently needs a wholesale review to prevent any political faction from oppression or persecution, and, that the review must take place outside Nigeria’s governing institutions which have vested interest in maintaining the corrupt and dictatorial status quo. In the light of the on-going convulsions and strife in Nigeria, we have agreed that a Nigerian conference held in Washington D.C. would be necessary to insure the necessary candour and safety among the participants,” he said. He noted that Nigeria is being currently governed by a constitution decreed by a military dictatorship that has long outlasted its usefulness, adding that the current efforts by the National Assembly were half-measures that would not address the fundamental issues facing the nation “Nigerians desperately need a new birth of freedom. The Nigerian conference is where it will begin,” he said. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/08/15/nadeco-plans-us-conference-to-address-separatist-concerns/ |

The quest for political restructuring gained momentum yesterday as a coalition of all socio-cultural organisations in South-west and Diasporas plan come together next month to decide status of Yoruba in Nigeria. The coalition, which will come together under the aegis of Yoruba Summit, will take advantage of the conference to perfect the region’s demand for Yoruba autonomy within a united, peaceful and equitable federation. The Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, disclosed the plan to THISDAY yesterday, thereby citing the imperatives of the meeting where the position of Yoruba nation would be officially made public. The Yoruba Assembly, an umbrella platform for all socio-political groups in the South-west, had in a recent communiqué asked the federal government to consider a referendum to enable nationalities constituting Nigeria to decide if they still want to remain together. The assembly under the leadership of Gen. Alani Akinrinade (rtd) had then faulted the claim by the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) that some political usurpers “are hiding under the guise of the legitimate agitation for restructuring and self-determination to destabilise the polity is totally untenable.” In its five-page communiqué signed by all its chartered members, the assembly had then said it was compelled by the rising tension in the Nigerian political space to convene a consultative meeting, which was held in Lagos at the heart of the current agitation for political restructuring and self-determination. After two months, the Yoruba Assembly issued the communiqué, Odumakin said all socio-cultural organisations in the region would converge on Ibadan next month to decide the position of Yoruba in Nigeria, which was said to the largest gathering of Yoruba people in history. Exchanging message with THISDAY yesterday, Odumakin disclosed that a summit of Yoruba people in the South-west, Kogi, Kwara States and the Diaspora “is coming up in the next few weeks in Ibadan.” He said the summit would attract Yoruba leaders across board including governors, topmost traditional rulers, members of National Assembly, opinion leaders, youth, artisans, professional bodies among others. Odumakin said the summit “will look at the place of Yoruba within Nigeria and articulate the positions of the Yoruba nation for a united, peaceful and equitable federation. It promises to be the biggest gathering of Yoruba in this millennium. All leading Yoruba organisations without exception are on board. “The planning committee under the leadership of Dr. Kunle Olajide will soon unveil details of the biggest event coming for the Yoruba soon. The need to get verb for Yoruba noun in the syntax of the Nigerian experience necessitated the summit.” He added that the summit would also deliberate on all issues relating “to a working Nigeria and Yoruba autonomy within it. We have passed through different stages of Nigerian metamorphosis from a federal to a unitary state. “We need to take a decision on which phase best suits the advancement of Yoruba civilisation. It is being organised under Yoruba Summit. It will hold in Ibadan in a matter of weeks but the planning committe will unveil the exact day soonest,” he explained. He therefore, noted that all leading Yoruba organisations without exception “are on board. The planning committee under Dr. Kunle Olajide will soon unveil details of the biggest event coming for the Yoruba soon.” https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/08/14/yoruba-convene-unity-summit-to-decide-status-in-nigeria/ |

These are long grammar...The Nigeria establishment doesn't want any peace...They prefer injustice, partiality, marginalization, exclusion, separation and crude nepotism...These don't form a progressive nation...and you can't wish to have peace ans stability while are are engaged in those.... |
Following the Anambra state’s Governor, Willie Obiano’s apology to the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, over the killing of its members by the security operatives during their remembrance day rally in Onitsha, the Amnesty International (AI) has urged the Anambra state Governor to set up a judicial commission that would see that justice is done in the mater. Amnesty International also, while detailing the various killings of IPOB members by the military also said that apologising to the IPOB members was not enough until those who perpetrated the dastardly act are brought to book. In a statement signed by its Media Manager, Isa Sanusi and made available to newsmen on Saturday, AI also said that there has been no prosecution in the dastardly act despite the evidence of human rights violation against the IPOB members. According to the statement, “Responding to reports that the Governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano, has apologized over the Remembrance Day killings of pro-Biafra (IPOB) activists on 30 May 2016, Amnesty International Nigeria Director Osai Ojigho said: IPOB members “Admission of the Remembrance Day killings must be followed up by the establishment of a judicial commission to ensure justice and accountability for those killed on that day, as well as on the at least three other occasions when the military and police extrajudicially executed IPOB supporters. “Those suspected of responsibility for these killings must face fair and open trials without recourse to the death penalty. Anambra state government now has the opportunity to address impunity.” “Amnesty International’s 24 November 2016 report ‘Bullets were raining everywhere’’: Deadly repression of pro-Biafra activists (http:///2ftVhWf) detailed evidence of the extrajudicial executions in Anambra state for which Governor Obiano has apologised, as well as three other incidents of unlawful killings in the state. “Amnesty International has not been able to verify the exact number of extrajudicial executions on 29 and 30 May 2016, but estimates that at least 60 people were killed and 70 injured over the two days. “Despite overwhelming evidence that the Nigerian security forces committed serious human rights violations including extrajudicial executions and torture on the day, no prosecutions have been carried out by the authorities. “Other attacks on IPOB members On 17 December 2015, soldiers killed five and injured at least 20 people at Head Bridge, Onitsha On 2 December 2015, at least six people were killed and 12 were injured in Onitsha. On 30 August 2015 in Onitsha, police and military fired live ammunition at IPOB marchers, killing at least two and injuring 22.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/08/ipob-killing-set-up-judicial-commission-to-bring-culprits-to-justice-ai-tells-obiano/
