Politics / Buhari Urges National Assembly To Pass Proceeds Of Crimes Bill by Corpersgist: 12:31am On Sep 12, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday urged the National Assembly to speedily consider and pass the Proceeds of Crimes Bill.

According to him, the provisions of the bill are crucial to effective recovery and managing of stolen assets.

The President spoke at the State House in Abuja after receiving the report of the three-man Presidential Committee raised to audit recovered funds.

The panel was raised to carry out a comprehensive audit of assets and funds recovered by federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies from May 29, 2015 to November 22, 2017.

Buhari said: “However, a key tool that will revolutionize our asset recovery and management architecture is the Proceeds of Crimes Bill which is currently awaiting passage by the National Assembly.

“Once the Bill is passed and assented, many of the challenges facing our asset recovery and management practice will be adequately taken care of as the Bill addresses most of the challenges facing effective asset recovery and management in Nigeria. I therefore encourage the National Assembly to take necessary steps to pass the Bill.”

On the committee, Buhari said: “As a result of gaps identified in the asset recovery process and in order to foster greater accountability and transparency; when I inaugurated the Committee in November 2017, I emphasized the resolve of this administration to pursue a strong anti-corruption policy and to trace and recover stolen assets using all legal and diplomatic resources at our disposal.

“I also directed the agencies involved to submit detailed reports of all their recovered assets by March 2017. I must say that today’s event which symbolizes the successful completion of the onerous task given to this committee is another milestone in the fight against corruption; a project that is very crucial to our developing democratic governance.”

Corruption, he said, constitutes a threat to the well-being, national security and the economy.

“I have made it clear that this government will not allow the wanton diversion and embezzlement of public funds into private pockets. Thus, we intend to continue taking all necessary measures to deprive looters of public assets of the fruits of their crimes.

“It is in keeping with the anti-corruption policy of this government, and in line with global best practices that this committee was set-up to review our asset recovery and management practices in order to evolve a proper management, transparency and accountability culture in the management of recovered assets.

“Given our history of impunity, much of Nigeria’s wealth has historically been squandered or stolen; leaving us with inadequate infrastructure for our growing population and economy. Asset Recovery is thus one of the essential tools for fighting corruption and we must therefore take issues of managing such recovered assets very seriously.”

The President said that the proceeds of the recovered assets would be utilised optimally to address the economic and social problems in the country.

According to him, loopholes for stealing public funds must be blocked.

He assured that the report and recommendations of the committee would be carefully examined and given due consideration.

“Our asset recovery and management system will in future be transparently, effectively and efficiently managed, and we will set-out a fresh template of public accountability in the country,” he added.

He also assured that his administration will remain committed to its promises.

“Until Nigeria triumphs over the evil of corruption, attain a prosperous economic status and surmounts all her security challenges,” he said.

He thanked the committee members for their service and dedication in preparing the report.

Justice Minister & Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami gave the breakdown and total amount of assets recovered within the period under consideration.

He said “N3.8 million, $378 million and 27,800 pounds have been recovered from public officials.

“In summary the recovered funds by the three man committee is N769 billion cash was recovered within the period under review,” he said

Malami also disclosed that the Federal Government recovered N13.8 billion from tax evaders in May 2018.

In May 2018, he said, government paid N439.2 million to about 14 whistle blowers who gave specific information on tax evasion.

While thanking the President for the opportunity to serve, panel chair Olufemi Lijadu hoped that the report will assist the government’s efforts to ensure that recovered assets are accounted for and managed in an accurate, transparent and logical manner.

According to him, the report is prepared in four volumes.

He said: “Volume I is the main report which contains the committee’s findings and recommendations; Volume II contains the detailed schedule of cash recoveries; Volume III contains the detailed schedule of non-cash recoveries; Volume IV contains correspondence with auditees and Volume V contains presentations and memoranda from auditees and professional organizations.”

Politics / Aspirant Urges EFCC To Probe Fayose Over Unimplemented Projects by Corpersgist: 6:46am On Sep 10, 2018
Source: corpersgist.com

Ekiti State of Assembly aspirant Mr. Hakeem Jamiu has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Governor Ayo Fayose for allegedly refusing to implement projects outlined in the budget in his native Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government.

Jamiu, who is contesting for the Assembly seat of Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency II on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said Fayose’s kinsmen voted against his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the July 14 governorship poll because he allegedly abandoned the people.

The Assembly aspirant insisted that the non-execution of the projects itemised in the budget had short-changed the people, hence the need to probe how funds voted for the projects were spent.

Jamiu, who spoke on Saturday at Igbemo-Ekiti while declaring his plan to run for the Assembly’s seat, said his ambition was borne out of the need to bring development to all communities in the constituency through law-making, performance of oversight functions and galvanising the citizenry to participate in governance.

Party leaders and members agreed that Jamiu, the former Senior Special Assistant on Research and Documentation during the first tenure of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, should be made the party’s candidate through a consensus arrangement.

They also passed a vote of no confidence on Fayose’s leadership, saying he has failed the people of the zone.

Jamiu said: “Governor Fayose is from our constituency but the people rejected him in the last election because he abandoned them. There wasn’t any project executed in the 10 communities that make up the constituency since 2014 and this reflected in the results of the last governorship election.

“The bridge linking his town and Igbemo Ekiti collapsed and the town was nearly cut off. But our governor never bordered. The present representative of the constituency did no single project when Fayemi did more than five projects in each of the towns.

“We need to assuage the suffering of our people. We need quality representation. That is what we are going there to achieve through Fayemi’s leadership and mentorship. The next election will be robust, unlike what we are having now.

“Our roads are bad; there is no investment in agriculture, particularly in rice that we grow in large quantities. All the projects initiated by Fayemi were abandoned. The lack of no confidence vote showed that the people are angry and desirous of change. That is what we are going to the Assembly to achieve.”

Politics / N75m Lexus For Fayose As 'Parting Gift' Causes Disquiet In Ekiti by Corpersgist: 6:14am On Sep 07, 2018
There is unease in Ekiti State over the approval and purchase of a 2018 Lexus LX 570 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) valued at N75 million for Governor Ayo Fayose as a “parting gift”.

The purchase is causing anxiety in the civil service as fear grips officers involved in the deal ahead of the change of government on October 16.

It was learnt that the vehicle was bought about a month ago but our reporter sighted the documents on the deal yesterday.

A civil servant, who spoke in confidence, described the deal as “strange, suspicious and unheard of” at a time government workers and retirees are owed salary arrears.

A memo for the purchase of the vehicle emanated from the Political and Economic Department of the Governor’s Office through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The letter authorizing the purchase of the SUV was addressed to the SSG, Dr. Modupe Alade.

It was written by Mr. Bayo Opeyemi, the Executive Secretary/Director General, and was dated August 1.

The deal was alleged approved same day by Fayose with his signature on the document.

The memo reads: “Kindly refer to the request for the direct procurement of one unit of 2018 Lexus LX 570 (U.S Specs) as a parting gift for the governor by the Political and Economic Affairs Department of the Governor’s Office at Page 15.

“The invoice at page 18 has been reviewed by the state’s Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) from N68,000,000 (exclusive of tax) to N66,000,000. The inclusion of 13 per cent tax will bring the total cost to N75,862,068.96.

“Please, present for approval the direct procurement of one unit of 2018 Lexus LX (US Specs) as parting gift for the Governor a sum of N75,862,068.96.”

A Certificate of No Objection (CONO) for Contract Award for the procurement of the SUV was also issued by Ekiti State Bureau of Public Procurement, dated August 3.

A Certificate of Purchase (COP) was also issued.

A civil servant familiar with the deal said: “The question people should be asking is: why is the outgoing governor approving the parting gift for himself?

“It is strange in the system, unheard of; it is suspicious. It was supposed to be the decision of the government and not the decision of one man.

“It is not the outgoing governor that will determine what the state will give to him. There is more to it than meets the eye.

“The incoming government must get to the root of the matter and all those involved, whether civil servants or politicians, must be brought to book.”

Former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, slammed Fayose for allegedly buying the SUV as a parting gift.

He criticised the payment of N43 million severance package to himself and deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

Adeyeye also criticised the governor for alleged sale of government property and auction of government vehicles to cronies at “ridiculous prices”.

The former minister, who declared his intent yesterday to run for Ekiti South senatorial, said the governor’s latest action showed that he (Fayose) did not love the workers and masses as he used to claim.

He added that it was callous of the governor to buy a luxury vehicle for himself with the state fund when workers are owed between five and eight months’ salary arrears.

Adeyeye urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the state to be more vigilant to prevent the state from being plundered by the outgoing administration.

He said: “I have always identified Fayose as a selfish person. He only thinks of himself. I have always maintained that the governor can’t be trusted.

“I know he will like to appropriate everything to himself. We learnt he has been selling state assets, like the Erunfun Land on Ijan road. That land was bought by Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1949 and he never appropriated it.

“We have had many governments in Ekiti: former Governors Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi never contemplated selling the land, but Fayose was planning to sell it to himself. Ekiti people won’t accept that.

“It was Fayemi who supposed to send him off, but due to selfishness, he (Fayose) decided to appropriate that to himself. That is not the trait of a good leader.

“For four years, Fayose didn’t do more than five projects and he claimed he has performed. He only touched two towns throughout the time. Schools, hospitals and roads have decayed under Fayose. No investments in Agriculture, road network, everything was neglected.

“Not even a single investment was witnessed in agriculture. So, that victory (last governorship poll) was a sound one for APC and Ekiti people.

“Fayose made several agreements with leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014 to win the governorship election. He never fulfilled any. He manipulated everything to suit himself in the PDP, despite the fact that I nearly won the governorship primary before I decided to defect to APC, just to defeat him at all cost.”

Governor’s media aide: let accusers bring evidence

The Chief Press Secretary to Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, has debunked the alleged purchase of a N75 million Lexus “parting gift” to the governor from government coffers.

In a text message to our reporter last night, Adelusi challenged anyone with evidence of the purchase to present same.

The governor’s aide urged anyone with evidence that Fayose paid N43 million as severance package to himself and his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, to show it.

He described those criticising the purchase of the vehicle as “ignorant”.

Adelusi said: “Those who alleged should come forward with genuine evidence of purchase of the vehicle as well as payment of severance allowance.

“Those who are saying these things are ignorant of the law.”

Politics / We Don't Trust FG To Stop The Killings In Middle Belt— MBF by Corpersgist: 6:52am On Sep 04, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

Middle Belt Forum, MBF, has decried Sunday’s drive-by shooting in Du, Jos South, in Plateau State that claimed the lives of several persons, warning that the Middle Belt was at a brink with the killings that had taken a new dimension

The forum maintained that the people of the zone had lost hope and trust in the ability of the government to protect them and end the killings.

In a statement by Coordinator of Public Communication of the forum, Ndi Kato, in Makurdi, the MBF warned: “The continual devaluation of the lives of the people of the Middle Belt is unfortunate and we as a people are at the brink.

“As usual, men and women who have families, who had bright futures and were going about their daily activities have been reduced to statistics thrown at small corners of newspapers and in ten seconds of the news. “Beyond the lives lost is the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness.

The people are not feeling safe and have no trust in the government to protect them nor end these killings. Their cries and calls for international help reveal this. “Yesterday’s drive-by shooting is one too many in a week filled with renewed attacks on the people of Plateau State.

The shooting has ruined that community for decades to come. “Lives were wasted and communities were burnt to the ground in that attack. We, therefore, call on the Federal Government to step up security efforts in the Middle Belt.

Celebrities / Girls Are Not Sex Objects – Ex-beauty Queen by Corpersgist: 6:47pm On Aug 25, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

Immediate past Miss Nigeria, Chioma Obiadi, has advised young girls and women to flaunt their gender with dignity to protectprotect them against being used as sex objects.

Obiadi spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos on her pet project, “Green Girl”, which projected decency and dignity of the female gender.

She said that it was wrong for young girls and women to be seen as sex objects by the men folks in the society.

“I think it is completely wrong for women to be seen as sexual objects by the men folk in the society, it is totally degrading and terrible.

“Those men who see girls as sex objects are opportunists who capitalise on the weakness of female gender and use it for their selfish interests,” she said.

According to her, many girls fall victims out of desperation for wealth or positions which can be avoided through self-development and achievement.

The 24-year-old beauty queen reminded girls that their bodies were meant to be the temple of God which must not be defiled but accorded some respect.
Chioma, a Geography student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra, frowned at the manner some girls threw themselves at men who capitalised on their weaknesses.

“It is really disheartening to see the way some of our girls flaunt themselves on men just to get one favour or the other from them.

“Those who go into such acts are not good representation of the female gender and as such I advise ladies to display serious mindedness.

“There is no situation you cannot overcome through self-achievement, no need to look for short cut with selling of your God made temple, we must stop it,”she said.
She noted that if ladies could carry themselves with dignity, no man would be able to abuse them or bastardised their womanhood.

“In all of these, I think women should say ‘no to nudity’ and then the men would have no choice than to follow suit in maintaining a sane relationship with women,” she said.

On her pet project, Chioma said she had gone round schools where she spoke with young girls and boys on keeping themselves and their environment clean, decent and disciplined.

Politics / Saraki, Tambuwal Left APC For Fear Of Buhari – Tinubu by Corpersgist: 6:56am On Aug 20, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday spoke on the defection of some chieftains from the ruling party to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said the defectors, including Senate President Bukola Saraki and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, left the APC because they wanted automatic tickets and “the sharing of the national wealth”, which the party could not guarantee.

Tinubu said those anticipating the decline of the APC on account of the defections will soon be disappointed by their inaccurate predictions, adding that the days and months ahead will reveal that the forecasts were premised on bitterness and not on objective analyses.

In his view, the debate on the current historic national transition should not be reduced to narrow and cunning electoral calculations based on which party maintains the majority in the National Assembly. Nigerians are more concerned about the quality of governance, Tinubu said.

He added: “We are locked in battle to define the future of this nation and the quality of its governance. This battle pits one party, the APC, with all its imperfections, that seeks national reforms against another party, the PDP, which symbolises the perfection of the most selfish designs of the most selfish politicians among us.”

The former Lagos State governor said the defectors, who have presidential ambition, are afraid to face President Muhammadu Buhari at primary.

Tinubu reflected on the gale of defections in a statement in Lagos titled: “They go away because we go the right way”.

He said chieftains who had called it quits with the APC embraced the PDP because of the promise of automatic tickets, offices and privileges, adding that they were not interested in political and governance reforms that are critical to the liberation of Nigeria from the tenement of global poor.

Firing salvos at Tambuwal, Tinubu said his ambition was motivated by a personal ambition predicated on the defeat of the progressive reform and not its advancement.

He stressed: “Governor Tambuwal’s exit can be distilled to one cause. He covets the presidency. However, he had not the stomach to challenge President Buhari in a primary. Tambuwal felt further insulted that he would be compelled to face a direct primary just to retain the governorship nomination.

“But for the promise made by PDP hardliners like Rivers State Governor Wike that he would have the PDP presidential nomination, Tambuwal would not have left. His exit had nothing to do with governance of the nation. It was about forging a personal ambition predicated on the defeat of progressive reform, not the advancement of it.”

Tinubu said it was strange that Saraki could attribute his exit to lack of governance in a government where he wields ample power and influence as the number three citizen.

Chiding him for lack of proper focus, he said the Senate President had concentrated on activities that fuelled his selfish designs, instead of progressive enactments that could catapult the country to progress.

Tinubu added: “He harbours dreams of the presidency, but Tambuwal’s ambition will dwarf Saraki’s when the two collide. If Saraki had remained in the APC, he would be unable to reclaim his Senate seat, let alone the Senate Presidency. He thus bolted because he lusts for the presidency, but was promised by the PDP, at least, a return to his position in the Senate.

“For Saraki to talk about lack of governance is for him to deny who he is and the position he holds. The man stands as Nigeria’s number three citizen. Clothed is he in ample power and influence. If he saw areas where government and the nation needed help, he could have easily applied his energies to these areas. He could have drafted legislation and easily got passed.

Why announcing his defection, Saraki said it was “inescapably imposed on me by certain elements and forces within the APC who have ensured that the minimum conditions for peace, cooperation, inclusion and a general sense of belonging did not exist.

He added: “All governance principles which were required for a healthy functioning of the party and the government were deliberately violated or undermined.”

Speakinmg to his supporters in Ilorin, he lamented that “200 juicy appointments” were made without anyone being given to him and House of Represntatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

Tambuwal also said he was defecting because the APC-led government neglected its promise to Nigerians including “the restructuring of the country as promised and as contained in the APC manifesto”

He added that he could not “boldly point to any meaningful federal projects initiated in the state under the APC government, adding that “Sokoto State is also not being meaningfully carried along in political appointments and in other matters of national importance.

“However, no progressive enactment bears his name, for he cared not for progress. He has been more focused on changing the rules of the Senate to favour himself and changing the order of elections so as to coincide with his selfish designs.”

Noting that the Buhari administration is on course, Tinubu said it is nurturing political and governance reforms that would reposition the polity.

He said: “We steadily close the door on the old practices that have caused a rich nation to reside in the tenement of the global poor. The corruption of the past is ending; for it must end, if we are to fulfill our collective purpose. With this correction, less public money will be diverted to private benefit. More will be afforded to the causes of the people. The economy is being transformed so that the average person will have a better chance of finding a better life.”

Tinubu also said Nigeria is on the path of a steady union where exclusive decision making by a handful of uninformed men and rich persons has become a thing of the past.

He lamented that while some politicians champion the cause of reforms, others are scheming against collective improvement.

Tinubu stressed: “They seek to halt progress toward a fairer nation. They seek to hold the old ways. The difference between the two parties and why some people returned to their PDP conclave must be seen in this light.”

To the former governor, Nigerians have a stark choice to make in 2019. They will exercise the wisdom to make a good choice, he said.

He added: “If they want to relive the certain failure and inequality of the system the PDP had erected against their very interests, the people will walk the way of the defectors. If the people want to give themselves a better chance at an excellent nation, they will adhere to the path elected in 2015 when they voted for reform and the APC.

“I believe in the collective wisdom of the people. They will choose the right way for they are Nigerians, which means they shall do what is right and just.”

Politics / Police: Why We’re Investigating Reporter by Corpersgist: 7:06am On Aug 17, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

The Nigeria Police yesterday shed more light on why it was investigating the Premium Times Security Sector reporter, Samuel Ogundipe.

It said Ogundipe was being investigated and prosecuted for theft and unlawful possession of restricted and classified documents.

The police said the reporter’s actions were detrimental to state/national security.

The Force said what Ogundipe did could jeopardise peace and lead to a breakdown of law and order, capable of causing crisis.

It said he was being prosecuted under other offences, which violated Official Secret Act, Cyber Crime Act and the Penal Code Law.

Spokesman Jimoh Moshood said in a statement that Ogundipe had volunteered statements and was standing trial.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Police Force’s attention was drawn to the innuendos and misinformation in the media about the arrest and ongoing prosecution of Samuel Ogundipe of Premium Times online publication by Police Investigation Unit.

“The Force is stating that Ogundipe is being investigated and prosecuted for “theft and unlawful possession of restricted and classified documents” inimical to state/national security that can jeopardise peace and lead to a breakdown of law and order, capable of precipitating crisis.

“Mr. Ogundipe is also being investigated and prosecuted under other offences, which violate Official Secret Act, Cyber Crime Act and the Penal Code Law, for which he has volunteered statements and is standing trial.

“It is factual to state that Ogundipe was arrested on August 14 and on completion of preliminary investigation, he was arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in less than 24 hours of his arrest.

“He was remanded in police custody and the case was adjourned till August 20.”

The Force said as a law-abiding organisation, it would ensure that the Rule of Law and its supremacy, which were essentials of democracy, prevailed at all times.

It added: “Individuals or groups, who violate the law, must be brought to justice. The Force will ensure that Nigerians, irrespective of profession, practice or career, are subject to the same law. Therefore, it wishes to impress it on the media to encourage prosecution of offenders upon whom a prima facie case has been established.

“Concerned groups or interested persons should be aware that the matter is in court and due process of law is being followed.

“The Force and the media are partners in ensuring peace, law and order, but will not compromise or allow an offender to go free or pervert the course of justice.”

The Police assured law-abiding citizens, journalists and the public of freedom of expression and other rights, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

It said it would hold in high esteem, the views of media unions, practitioners, associations and other stakeholders.

“The Force is constrained by the law to allow justice take its course and rule of law to prevail.”

It urged the public to disregard every sentiment being peddled to cast aspersions on the investigation and prosecution of the suspect.

Protesters storm police headquarters

Protesters yesterday marched on the Louis Edet House Force Headquarters, Abuja to demand the release of Premium Times Security Sector reporter Samuel Ogundipe.

He was nabbed by the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Tuesday.

The arrest followed Ogundipe’s refusal to disclose the source of a story published in the online newspaper.

The story contained a report by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, on the siege to the National Assembly by the State Security Service.

The protesters, a coalition of civil society groups, #OurMumuDondo, occupied the entrance of the building for about two hours to make their demands.

They were led by popular musician Charlie Boy, convener of Concerned Nigerians Deji Adeyanju and publisher of Sahara Reporters and presidential aspirant Omoyele Sowore.

The demonstrators chanted songs, such as “All we are saying is free Samuel now”, “Freedom comes by struggle”, “Solidarity forever, we shall always fight for our rights”.

They carried placards with the inscriptions: “Buhari must drop all charges against Samuel Ogundipe”, “Samuel Ogundipe is a journalist and not a criminal”, “Don’t take our voice away”.

The protesters blocked the road to the police headquarters and prevented movement, despite being dispersed with tear gas by the police.

Adeyanju said: “This is a deliberate attempt to intimidate Ogundipe and other journalists. It is bad for the image of the country and the police. We will not negotiate the freedom of the press with anybody, no matter who the person is. The police must release Ogundipe unconditionally with an apology.

“It is important to note that if this can happen to Ogundipe, it can happen to anybody. A situation where people use public office to intimidate and harass journalists, because the goal is to intimidate Samuel and dampen his spirit, is condemnable. We will not allow our country to be dragged down like this.

“As stakeholders in the Nigeria project, we are doing our best to ensure that no Nigerian lives in fear in a democracy.”

Sowore condemned the IG for pressurising Ogundipe to disclose his source.

He said: “The police must learn to respect human rights. We are going to protest till our space is respected. The police are supposed to be working for the people and not against them. The role of the press is defined, even in the constitution. We will not compromise on that.”

One of the demonstrators, Ralph Adebayo, described the IG as “ignorant,” noting that “he has been transmitting confusion and controversy since he became the police chief.”

The spokesman asked the protesters to summarise their demands and forward them to his office.

The demonstrators left the Force headquarters around noon and promised to resume their protest today.

NYSC / Ogun, NYSC Officials Visit Recuperating Corps Members At OOUTH by Corpersgist: 6:40am On Aug 15, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

A delegation made up of officials of the Ogun government and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Tuesday visited the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu to assess the condition of the corps members involved in an auto- crash on Monday.

It would be recalled that the affected corps members were involved in the accident shortly after leaving the orientation camp in Sagamu while travelling to Sango-Ota.

The Ogun NYSC coordinator, Mrs Josephine Bakare, led the scheme’s team while the state government was represented by Mr Joseph Fabi, the Permanent Secretary in the Ogun Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Mrs Florence Takon, the NYSC Assistant Director of Press and Public Relations, said on the sidelines of the visit that the NYSC was happy the corps members were responding to treatment.

“Six of the injured corps members with serious injuries are recuperating well, while four of them had been discharged, with another two still under observation by the doctors.

“We want to express our appreciation to men and officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission for coming quickly to the victims’ rescue. “We are happy that just over a week from the Taraba River incidence, we are not mourning the loss of another set of our children.

“The report we have from the hospital here is that the doctors just need more time to observe those being treated before discharging them.

“As I speak, the remaining 31 corps members, who were involved, are being taken care of at the camp as they prepare to be conveyed to their destinations.

“The accident is unfortunate, but we shall continue to sensitise our drivers on the dangers of over speeding and educate them on the need to maintain daily and proper checks on their vehicles,” she said.

One of the victims, Mr Isaac Ukaegbu, 24, an Insurance Science graduate from the Imo State University, said that the crash was caused by brake failure. “From what I recall, the driver suddenly raised an alarm that the brake had failed and in the process of controlling the bus, he swerved off the road to avoid hitting other vehicles.

“ He lost control of the vehicle and it crashed and immediately caught fire. “Thankfully, we all managed to escape, but with varying degrees of injuries, “he said.

A total of 2,411 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members completed their orientation course which began on July 24 at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Sagamu.

They had all received their postings to their places of primary assignments.

ONE of the four Vermont Democrats seeking the party nomination to run for governor in the fall election isn’t old enough to vote, let alone drive.

Ethan Sonneborn, 14, of Bristol, met the requirements to be on the primary ballot and is taking his place with the state’s more age-appropriate candidates on the Tuesday primary ballot, to say nothing of numerous candidate forums and debates.

“I think Vermonters should take me seriously because I have practical progressive ideas, and I happen to be 14, not the other way around,” Sonneborn said in a recent televised gubernatorial forum. “I think that my message and my platform transcend age.”

The Vermont Constitution doesn’t have an age requirement for people seeking the state’s highest office beyond having lived in the state for four years before the election. Sonneborn qualifies.

That apparent oversight by the state’s founders more than 225 years ago was enough to encourage the politically precocious teen to collect the signatures needed to place him on the primary ballot.

He said he’s always been fascinated with the concept of building coalitions. Robert F. Kennedy was the politician who most embodies that for him.

Sonneborn said his decision to run grew out of his frustration with state and national politics. The teen learned he could, and then decided to do so as a gut reaction to clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, one year ago.

His July finance report shows Ethan has raised just over $1,700, not enough to make him competitive in a world where the successful candidates will undoubtedly have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more, for ads, mailings, staff and other miscellaneous political expenses before the November general election.

Even if he doesn’t have much money, Ethan has been on the stage with Vermont’s other Democratic candidates.

It might be a stretch, though, to call the other candidates traditional politicians.

Former utility executive Christine Hallquist says her experience and ideas make her the best choice as Vermont’s next governor, but outside Vermont, she’s pitching herself as someone who would, if elected, become the nation’s first transgender political candidate. There is also James Ehlers, an environmentalist, Brenda Siegel, a dance festival organizer.

Last January, two Vermont lawmakers introduced a bill that would require candidates to be registered voters. The proposal went nowhere. At a recent news conference, Republican Gov. Phil Scott said he thought lawmakers should take a look at who should be able to run for the state’s highest office.

“I think you should at least be able to get your driver’s license at the time that you become governor,” said Scott, who is seeking re-election and is facing businessman Keith Stern in the Republican primary.

Sonneborn thinks he’ll do better in the primary than people are expecting. And he measures his campaign’s success another way, too.

“I think if I can get one person who wasn’t involved in the political process before involved now, then my campaign will have been a success,” he said.

Politics / PDP Cries Out Over Alleged Plot To Arrest Saraki, Ekweremadu by Corpersgist: 7:11am On Aug 13, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm, saying it has again uncovered a plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to invite, arrest and detain Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu.

In a statement yesterday by the spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party accused a certain “cabal within the Presidency” of plotting to use compromised security agencies and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to execute the plot.

The PDP also stated that it has unraveled fresh facts confirming that the pressure by the Presidency for the reconvening of the Senate was borne out of a sinister motive and not for any emergency in the approval of the budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2019 elections.

The statement said: “The fresh plot to detain the two presiding officers is part of renewed design to keep them out of circulation, ahead of Senate resumption, so as to enable the heavily induced APC senators, who are now in the minority, to throw up two of their members as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively on the excuse that Saraki and Ekweremadu failed to show up for proceedings in the Senate.

“Apart from plots to arrest and detain Saraki and Ekweremadu, the PDP has also been made aware of plans to use the EFCC and security forces to clamp down on their family members, including their wives and siblings as well as close associate, all in the effort to weaken their resolve.

“PDP was further informed that contrary to claims by the APC and the Presidency, INEC actually submitted the budget to the Presidency since February 2018, only for the Presidency to submit it to the National Assembly in July when the legislature was already going on recess; with a view to enmesh it in a needless controversy.

Religion / Bola Ajibola: 'After Fasting For 7 Days, All My 35 Students Scored A1 In Maths' by Corpersgist: 8:15am On Aug 12, 2018
After fasting for seven days, all ‘my 35 children’ scored A1 in mathematics — Prince Bola Ajibola

A former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Bola Ajibola (SAN), is celebrating the students of one of the educational establishments founded by him for their excellent performance at the latest edition of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Ajibola, a retired Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, Kingdom of Netherlands, is thanking God for strengthening him to make the IMA International Model College happen. According to him, all the 35 students from the school who sat for the African standard examination scored A1 in mathematics.

The new development which, he said, is not new to the school, however, came with added excellence this year. The students’ achievement appears to be a further proof of Allah’s acceptance of the strides of the global figure who served as Minister for over six years without taking salary.

It will be recalled that the Crescent University Abeokuta (CUAB), which is the peak of the educational establishments founded by the Olori Omo Oba of Owu Kingdom, Abeokuta, is, today, one of the leading private universities in Nigeria. CUAB is also known as the ‘Citadel of moral and academic excellence’.

At a ceremony held in the premises of Islamic Mission for Africa (IMA), Abeokuta, the 84-year-old legal luminary gave details of how the latest academic success of ‘his children’ at the IMA International Model College gladdened his heart.

Ajibola said: “What I saw and heard on Thursday, July 26, 2018 concerning our outgoing students at IMA International Model College not only amazed me but also gave me the impression that these students are among the best all over Nigeria if not in Africa.

They performed wonders in their dedication and diligence in many ways. “Before the final examination (SSCE), they unanimously took a decision to fast for seven days which they completed with prayers. God Almighty answered their prayers because all the 35 students passed their SSCE. Besides, none of these students failed in mathematics”.

The founder went on, “In fact, they all got A1. The most incredible of this is that one them who sat for further mathematics also scored A1. They all did well in physics, biology and chemistry scoring credit. They performed wonders in cultural display and deep Islamic lectures. In science, they performed an experiment that really went beyond my imagination.

They were able to produce electricity and, in fact, light out of wired electrode and we noticed electrical light patently coming out of the wired lemon seeds which was about 20. “On culture, two of them came out to give a wonderful performance in EWI which was done to the acclamation of all the guests in the hall.

Before the program even started, one of them continued to recite from the holy Quran virtually endlessly. He had memorised virtually a large part of the holy Quran.

“One of the parents who showered gifts on the students testified that his daughter that attended IMA International Model College was given a scholarship and she is now doing excellently well at Crescent University”.

Opeyemi Jimoh, IMA college maths teacher, whose all 35 students scored A1, is a holder of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and University of Ibadan. Jimoh is an unassuming egghead.

A winner of several awards, the teacher fell in love with the teaching of mathematics and further mathematics which many students dread like the plaque owing to their abstract and “problematic” nature. Jimoh (l) receiving his Best Teacher of the Year prize from the Coordinator, IMA Model College, Abeokuta, Nurudeen Oladimeji, while Ajibola (m) watches.

Management, stakeholders applaud The management and other stakeholders of IMA International Model College applauded the superlative performance of the outgoing students.

Apart from Ajibola, the Vice Chancellor, Crescent University, Professor Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, during his remarks at the award and prize-giving ceremony of the school, said the outgoing students were among the lucky ones to have had access to quality education provided by the school.

He noted that the success stories recorded by Crescent University today would have been impossible without the Islamic Mission for Africa (IMA) “the body which gave birth to this college and Crescent University, Abeokuta”. Gbajabiamila charged the outgoing and current students of the college to crown their excellence by joining Crescent University.

A statement by the management said, “The college had recorded 100% success twice in the SSCE in the past. However, the uniqueness of this year’s result is the near impossible feat of A1 parallel recorded by products of the school in mathematics.”

The erudite mathematics teacher, Jimoh, said, “Mathematics is not a difficult subject; it is the methodology of many teachers and delivery that pose problems.” He emphasized that the fear appeal by many mathematics teachers makes students dread the subject and causes victims to, later in their lives, have career switch from mathematics’ related subjects.

“A mathematics teacher should cultivate his or her students to be his friends,” Jimoh stated. On the secret behind his success, the teacher explained that he always ensured that “certain topics like statistics, trigonometry, quadratic graphs, trigonometric graphs, longitude and latitude which come out every year in SSCE were treated in details.”

“These topics need to be dealt with more seriously than the others”, he revealed. The teacher believes that since mathematics’ topics are usually linked, the knowledge of students in previous topics and previous year should be assessed by the teacher in charge who must go the “extra, extra mile” to tutor his students.

According to him, “the teacher must also be very patient in handling the subject while an effective teacher should go as far as explaining mathematics in the local language because the subject is abstract”. Jimoh went on, “Mathematics teachers should be lenient with their students while taking the subject. Some teachers make the subject harder than it seems.

“Mathematics deals with steps and that is what WAEC marks. You may even get the final answer wrong but still get like 9/10 in a particular question. So it has to go with steps. I have been involved in WAEC coordination. I know the rules and this has helped”.

He identified giving a lot of assignments and entertaining questions from students even beyond the regular periods of the subject as a good step to helping students, saying this is necessary because one or two periods of regular class may not be enough to groom students to the desired standard.

The teacher agreed, to a large extent, that most failure in the subject is attributable to psychological reason regarding teacher-student relationship.

There is no doubting the fact that Jimoh is a model of how an ideal mathematics teacher should be—proactive, patient, painstaking, friendly and methodical.

The world needs more of this genius to develop the fledgling minds.

Foreign Affairs / UN Chief Welcomes Kabila’s Stepping Down As DRC President by Corpersgist: 9:46am On Aug 11, 2018
Source: Corpersgist.com

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has commended the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Joseph Kabila’s decision not to stand in elections scheduled to take place on Dec. 23.

In a statement issued by Mr Stéphane Dujarric, his spokesman, Guterres also welcomed the continued progress towards the holding of presidential and legislative elections in DRC in December, preparing the ground for a peaceful transfer of power.

However, in spite of Kabila’s announcement, Leila Zerrougui, the UN Special Representative for the country and head of UN Stabilisation Mission to DRC, has expressed concerns about the lack of a “level playing field” in the political process so far this year.

Zerrougui cited opposition grievances – including over voting machinery and electoral records – and ongoing human rights violations: civil society actors and political opponents in DRC continued to be arbitrarily arrested and media workers threatened.

She warned that without progress on these fronts, the credibility and inclusivity of the elections might be at risk.

In line with constitutional rules, Kabila was due to end his mandate as leader of the Central African nation, in 2016.

Following delays and subsequent political mediation, his term was extended until December 2017, but protests were sparked when polls were once again delayed by 12 months, resulting in the violent repression of demonstrators by Congolese security forces.

Kabila’s name was absent from a provisional list of candidates that was published by CENI, the DRC’s electoral commission, on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a joint statement from Canada, the US, Switzerland, the EU and African Union, as well as MONUSCO, applauded Kabila for agreeing to step down at the end of the year.

Politics / National Assembly ‘ll Keep Defending Democracy, Says Senate President by Corpersgist: 7:49am On Aug 10, 2018
Source: corpersgist.com

SENATE President Bukola Saraki yesterday reiterated the resolve and commitment of the Eighth Senate and the National Assembly to keep protecting and defending the nation’s fledgling democracy.

Saraki, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, in Abuja, spoke when the chairmen and leaders of 45 registered political parties visited him at the National Assembly.

He told the party leaders, led by Democratic United Party (DUP) National Chairman Chief Perry Okpara, that as direct representatives of the people, lawmakers would keep playing their role to ensure that the rule of law is followed and that human rights are respected.

Saraki said: “I thank you for taking out time to be with us here today. Thank you for the solidarity message and we truly appreciate it as it encourages us to further do what we are doing to defend democracy in our great country.

“The big thank you goes to all Nigerians that stood with us and have come to support us here in the National Assembly because in supporting us, you are supporting our democracy.

“We will continue to defend it. We will continue to ensure that there is respect for the rule of law and that due process is followed across the country.

He was optimistic that the perpetrators of the recent siege on the National Assembly have learnt their lesson from the wide condemnation that has continued to trail their action.

Okpara told the Senate President that the visit was to show their solidarity with the National Assembly leadership for standing up in defence of democracy in the face of the recent siege to the complex by Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.

He condemned the DSS siege and declared that as national leaders of political parties, “we cannot sit by and watch our country slide into the Hobbesian state of anarchy, where life has become short, brutish and lawless”.

NYSC / 5 Ways To Have An Exciting Experience In NYSC Camps by Corpersgist: 10:23am On Jul 24, 2018
You don't need to travel to an NYSC camp and not enjoy the orientation week. Read this and have a nice camp experience.

PCMs will soon start travelling to their various states of deployment.
For years, NYSC camp activities have remained the same with their rules, the compulsory three weeks orientation programs always have two stories to tell.

Some ex-corps members talk about their camp experience so much interest and enthusiasm while others think it is not so great.

However, there is no point in spending three weeks in a regimented area like NYSC  camp and not enjoy the little freedom you have.

Here five ways you can have an unforgettable NYSC camp experience.

1. Campfire night

NYSC campfire Night

In the last week of the orientation programs, NYSC will give you a series of fun activities that will make you want to come for another orientation. One of such activities is the campfire night.

As a corps member, you should not deny yourself this experience as it's one of the most interesting activities in the camp. You need to see the fun that comes with this activity. This seems to be the corps members happiest moment.

2. Run a business on camp

You can make some cool cash on camp

While many think going to NYSC camp will require you to spend the money you don't have for three weeks, a business-minded graduate like you should ignore such a mindset and think of how to make money on camp.

Photography is probably the most popular business in NYSC camp. If you have a camera and you are very good at photography, you'll certainly make some cool cash before leaving the camp.

3. Join SAED

» moreThe NYSC recently said Corps members will soon start serving in farms

The NYSC a few years ago introduced Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development to the list of orientation programs for corps members in the camp.

The SAED has helped a lot of corps members to develop one skill or the other. This is a platform for you to learn graphics, interior decorations, fashion designing, make-up, bead-making, fish farming etc. Lots of graduates have become self-employed through  SAED.

4. Join a group

New Horizon  (Joining the NYSC band is one way to have an exciting camp experience)
Another way to enjoy your NYSC camp experience is by joining a group. There are so many groups and associations you can join in the camp. Do you have interest in music, Information dissemination and social media? Join the Orientation Broadcasting Service OBS) team and the NYSC band.

There are also cultural groups as well as religious associations. The Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN) and the Nigeria Christian Corpers Fellowship (NCCF) are so popular on camp. You can your religious group, improve your spirituality and at the same time have an exciting experience in camp.

5. Take Part in Morning Drills and Man 'O' War drills

Corps members taking part in Man O war drills

Many corps members do not seem to like the morning drills but trust me, those drills are useful exercises. At least, it helps you burn calories and keep you in good shape.

The Man O War activities too are always interesting. You won't like to sit down seeing your fellow corps members jumping the fence, climbing ropes, crawling under barb wires, to even fighting karate with so much excitement without wanting to join them.

Fayose, police trade words over alleged compromise of governorship poll
July 14, 2018 0 Comments Edit

Gov. Ayo Fayose of Ekiti has alleged that Saturday’s gubernatorial election has been largely compromised by personnel of the Nigerian police. Newsmen report that the governor, who addressed newsmen shortly after casting his vote at about 1:20 pm at his Polling Unit 001 in Afao-Ekiti, alleged that policemen aided and abetted the distribution of money to induce voters.

He, however, admitted that voters turned out massively and conducted themselves in a peaceful manner. The governor accused policemen of supervising ballot snatching as well as providing cover for those reported to be engaged in illegal sharing of money on election day. According to him, all attempts to personally report the alleged cases to the police authorities were rebuffed. “I want to state expressly that the police have hijacked the whole process; INEC might mean well but the process was tampered with by the police ” As I speak, thugs are having a field day snatching ballot boxes under police watch; this is a national disgrace ” There were cases of not only ballot snatching, but ballot cleansing and clearing, even as the police and other officers cooperated by looking the other way,’’ he said.

But one of the three Police Commissioners deployed in the area to monitor the gubernatorial poll, Mr Ali Janga, dismissed the allegations. He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission and the electorate for the peaceful conduct of the exercise. Janga said most of the allegations raised by politicians were promptly investigated and were found to be untrue. “I have visited some of the local governments and there was no electoral manipulation anywhere as being claimed ” People just raise false alarm by sending distress calls to us, but many of them were found to be false when we got there.

“Election materials were distributed as early as possible and they were guarded by security men and the turnout was very impressive,’’ he said.

Ekiti: I am in charge of this state by 80%, I must win this election – Fayose
July 14, 2018 0 Comments Edit

The governor of Ekiti state, Mr Ayodele Fayose, Saturday insisted that his candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, must win the ongoing election in the state.

Speaking to journalist immediately he cast his vote, Fayose said that he is in charge of Ekiti with about 80% and by the grace of God his candidate will come out victorious after the election. His words, “This process, INEC might mean well, but the process has been hijacked by security agencies. It is a national disgrace for the security agencies.

National disaster and there is danger ahead,” he said. “Remember we raised all these issues. As I speak to you, they said they deployed 30, 000 policemen, military, paramilitary and all that but thugs are snatching ballot boxes everywhere. And what they call see and buy politics is thriving everywhere with the police and civil defense giving signs to people bearing the money so that they can pay the voters. “It is my duty to vote and be responsible in voting, and that’s why I have stayed in my house and I’m going back now.

“But no matter what it is, I’m winning this election. There’s a difference between what I’m narrating and my capacity to win. On top of all these things they are doing, I will still win this election, because this state I’m in charge by 80% by the grace of God. I won the last election by 82, 000 votes, how do they recover from that 82, 000 even if they cut the heads of 82, 000 people, they can’t get far.

“I will still win this election. But beyond my winning, this country is in crisis. I wonder if a government came to power through popular vote, defeating an incumbent and conceded “All the security agencies are totally working for the APC. Beyond this, they gave about 64 hilux to to APC candidates and they deployed them to make arrest.

And when you ask senior police officers, they say they are not aware. You saw what happened in front of the government house This is unfortunate for Nigeria.” “I raised all these alarms that this elections may be marred with violence, and that’s exactly what’s going on now. In almost all local government, PDP chieftains are being arrested. Council chairmen, house of assemblies members, majority of my people are being arrested. My chief of staff is in detention. He was arrested about an hour ago,” he said. “We fight corruption, but wrong people in authority is the worse the thing that can happen to any nation.

If this is the sample for 2019, I think it’s a lost ground and it’s a hopeless expectation. I want to say very expressly that the security agencies are enemies of Nigeria. They have taken over the election from INEC. The police authority refused to pick calls; we can’t reach any of them. The thugs are operating freely with cutlasses and guns everywhere. It is regrettable and sad.” “Card readers were not working in more than 50% of the places.

In Efon-Alaaye, most card readers weren’t working. We have some units where they only accredited only 20 people. Where one voter spends up to about 40 minutes. Some didn’t have their fingers go through. I think INEC needs to be enhanced, he said.

Politics / 183 Teenagers Working For Boko Haram Handed Over To UN by Corpersgist: 6:17pm On Jul 09, 2018
No fewer than 183 teenagers, who were previously working with Boko Haram terrorists, have been handed over to the United Nations by the Nigerian Army.

They were on Monday handed over to officials of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Maiduguri, the Borno State.

They are for rehabilitation and re-integration. The Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen Nicholas Rogers released the male and female teenagers. Rogers said they were arrested at various locations in the north east.

Faces of some of the teenagers handed over to UN agency United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) hailed the release of the teenagers by Nigerian Armed Forces in Maiduguri. Mr. Mohamed Fall, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria gave the commendation in Abuja, noting that they were released after been cleared of ties with Boko Haram insurgents.

Fall identified them as ranges from age seven to 18 comprising of eight girls and 175 males. He commended the efforts of the military and the authorities, adding that their action demonstrated a clear commitment to ensuring better protection of children affected by the conflict.

“These eight girls and 175 boys are first and foremost victims of the ongoing conflict and their release is an important step on their long road to recovery. “We will be working with the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and partners to provide the children with all the assistance they need. “I also want to commend the action taken by the military and the authorities, it demonstrates a clear commitment to better protect children affected by the conflict.”

Fall noted that the children who have been in administrative custody for long period would receive medical attention and psychosocial support before the process of reuniting them with their families as well as reintegrating them into society. According to him, since 2017, UNICEF has supported social and economic reintegration of over 8,700 children helping trace their families, returning them to their communities and offering them psychosocial support.

“UNICEF has also help in their education, vocational training and informal apprenticeships and opportunities to improve livelihoods,” Fall noted.

Crime / Tens Of Thousands Of South Korean Women On Saturday Angrily Urged The Government by Corpersgist: 2:18pm On Jul 07, 2018
Tens of thousands of South Korean women on Saturday angrily urged the government to crack down on secretly-filmed spycam pornography in one of the biggest-ever female-only protests in the country.

So-called spycam videos have become increasingly common in the South, where men caught secretly filming women — in schools and workplaces, toilets and changing rooms — make headlines on a daily basis.
Distributing pornography is illegal in South Korea, but such videos are widely shared on porn sites and Internet chatrooms or used in adverts for websites promoting prostitution and gambling.

“Those men who film such videos! Those who upload them! Those who watch them! All of them should be punished sternly!” the protestors chanted in unison at the rally held in central Seoul. Many held banners reading “My life is not your porn” and “We’re humans, not a sexual object for your sick fantasy”.

Organisers said around 55,000 women took part in the demonstration but police put the estimate at about 20,000. Most of the protesters were teenagers or those in their 20s — a demographic seen as the main target of the spycam epidemic.
“I and my friends always look around to see if there are any suspicious holes on a wall or a door whenever we walk into a public toilet stall,” a 22-year-old protester who declined to be named told AFP.

“What kind of country has South Korea become? A country where women can’t even pee without having to worry about having their butts filmed in secret?” South Korea takes pride in its tech prowess, from ultra-fast broadband to cutting-edge smartphones. About 95 per cent of its 50 million people possess smartphones — the highest in the world.

But its technological advances have also given rise to an army of tech-savvy peeping Toms in a male-dominated country with a poor record on women’s rights. The number of spycam crimes surged from about 1,100 in 2010 to more than 6,500 last year, but most offenders were fined or given suspended jail terms described by many women’s rights groups as a mere slap on the wrist.

The offenders — mostly men — have included college professors, school teachers, doctors, church pastors, public servants, police officers and even a court judge.
Such practices have become so rampant that all manufacturers of smartphones sold in the South are required to ensure the cameras on their devices make a loud shutter sound when taking photos. But many use special smartphone apps that disable the mandatory sound or use high-tech spy cameras hidden inside eye glasses, lighters, watches, car keys and even neckties.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said in May that the spycam epidemic had become a “part of daily life” in the country and urged tougher punishments for offenders.

Business / Iran Says Trump ‘destabilising’ Oil Market by Corpersgist: 2:01pm On Jul 07, 2018
Iran on Saturday accused US President Donald Trump of destabilising the oil market with his flurry of tweets taking aim at the OPEC cartel. “These days… the price is dependent on the behaviour of Mr. Trump,” Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said on state television. “Every day, Mr. Trump has a new message or remark that causes concern in the market, or he gives OPEC members orders that are very insulting,” or demands other countries increase their production, Zanganeh said. “It’s an insult to the people and national sovereignty of these countries and it also destabilises the market,” he added. In his latest tweet on the subject on Wednesday, Trump said that the “OPEC Monopoly must remember that gas prices are up & they are doing little to help”. He has repeatedly urged the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) — which includes key US ally Saudi Arabia — to raise its production. OPEC and other producers including Russia agreed last month to boost output by around a million barrels a day, reversing course after supply cuts that cleared a global glut and boosted prices. The move came as Iran — an OPEC member — faces renewed sanctions over Trump’s decision to quit the international nuclear deal with Tehran, which has added to supply concerns on world markets.

In this interview, Col Aminu took a cursory look at some of the changes he saw in the state he governed 30 years ago. He also tasked the citizenry on how to collaorate with the security agencies in order to bring Boko Haram to its knees saying terrorism was the most difficult war in any part of the world.

Excerpts:-

Sir, is this your first visit to Borno State since you left office?

As you know, I came to Borno purposely to attend the wedding Fatiha of the daughters of my friend and Elder statesman, Dr. Mohammed Indimi but it is not my first since leaving office. I come from time to time to visit friends here. I was here shortly after Governor Kashim Shettima came into power.

As a former governor, you must have known that Borno used to be a peaceful state in the Northeast; but the state is now in its ninth year of Boko Haram crisis, how would you describe the situation?

I left Borno state exactly 30 years ago now. It is also very interesting to tell you that I spent 30 months as Military Administrator in Borno state. Looking at the past and present, you know, so many things have taken place or happened. There is the issue of Boko Haram which has been a source of terror for both the people and the government but I am impressed with how the state governor has been handling the crisis, how he has stood for the people and how he has efficiently tabled the crisis before the international community.

I am also highly impressed with what is happening in terms of development put in place by the present administration of Governor Kashim Shettima. To put politics aside, I was humbled when I saw positive changes in Maiduguri and other parts of the state. What I have seen is unbelievable considering my knowledge that Borno receives less federal statutory allocations compared to other states in addition to the crisis that has forced millions people out of their homes and are now Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). I have seen secondary schools that are fully air-conditioned, digitally constructed classrooms with laptops, computers, ICT materials which have really enhanced the learning processes in the state. I have seen newly constructed network of roads and drainages within the metropolis, I have seen different housing estates like the Legacy Garden in Bulumkutu ward, Model Primary and Secondary schools in Gomari Airport, Hospitals, beautification and interlocking of the streets, in fact, the whole town I saw has changed. We must give credit to Governor Shettima who has done so much despite the security challenges in the state. I like his courage, I like his focus, I like his belief in the masses, I also love his tenacity of purpose, he is fantastic, and I must commend him and his people for giving their maximum support to achieve these. The developments are very glaring. By the way,

I have seen the transformations in Agriculture; I have seen quite a number of tractors, combined harvesters and other modern farming inputs provided by this government. If you go to Agric Farm Centre, you will be amazed with the kinds of agricultural equipment purchased and ready for distribution to our farmers in this cropping season. This is why I will advise the people of Borno State ahead of 2019 to be careful in their choice of Shettima’s successor. You can imagine if an incompetent person had been the governor of Borno in this kind of situation. Governor Shettima’s successor has to be someone who will consolidate on these good records and do more for the people of the state. Such person should be a good person who will have the interest of the people at heart just like Governor Shettima.

The people should ensure that they give their massive votes to a person with good character and integrity, a person with no questionable character and who will carry everybody along.

You sound as if you did not envisage such development happening within the last 30 years

How can anyone expect these kinds of good things under the security challenges in this State? I expected development no doubt but these positive changes took place very fast and despite the activities of insurgents, which the governor actually inherited from his predecessor.

This kind of development is what democracy is all about. It is government’s responsibility to provide an enabling environment to its people, it is also the responsibility of the people to take advantage of such provisions by government in the society. People need to play their own role in the society. If the leadership is playing its roles, and the followers do not play their roles well, there would be problem. Therefore, in moving any society to greater heights, it is a collective responsibility. Even if you give Borno State Government the entire 2018 Budget of this country, this budget will not be adequate given the demanding nature of our people, so I am appealing to our people to really understand governance. I want to advice that government needs to enlighten our people on the complexity of governance, so that they will understand.

As someone with military background, what do you think is the solution to the Boko Haram challenges facing the Borno you once governed?

Terrorism is the most difficult war in any part of the world. Just like Boko Haram, you do not know who is a member of Boko Haram and who is not. Boko Haram members can go and kill, cause destructions, come back to the society and mingle with people. It is very difficult to identify a terrorist, and that is why all hands must be on deck to end Boko Haram. Everywhere in the world, security is very expensive and when you are talking of security, as I keep on saying ‘security belongs to everybody, it is everyone’s business. Everybody has to play his/her own part. When Boko Haram thing started it was left in the hands of government and security agencies, and that was why it went viral. These operations going on here in the North East must be a collective responsibility.

Everybody must be adequately involved, whether you are a Muslim, a Christian or pagan, otherwise we will continue to have disconnect and there would be a problem that may consume all of us. We should all be informants to security forces. What I mean is that the citizenry should volunteer to give information to our security agencies, especially on the movement of criminals around their environment or within the theatre of war. Such information is normally treated with confidentiality. Let us wake up from our slumber, let us be more courageous for all of us to fight this menace of Boko Haram. I am not saying that you should do something which at the end of the day will get you killed, but there are things you should do before losing hope to your enemy. As a man there are certain things you should do to safeguard yourself and your family, and one of those things is courage. We are in a situation that everybody is at war now in the North East and we must have courage and support government and security agencies so that at the end we come victorious.

I am happy that this Boko Haram war is uniting us as a state and country, because when Boko Haram terrorists strike, they strike at everybody whether you are a Muslim or a Christian and that is why people have started teaming up to fight the war irrespective of religious inclinations, tribes or ethnic considerations. I must commend the Federal Government, the state governments in the North East and our security agencies as well as our people for taking the bull by the horn to see to the end of Boko Haram insurgency.

Politics / Igbo Political Future Rests On My Re-election—buhari by Corpersgist: 9:18am On Jul 04, 2018
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, said the political future of Igbo in Nigeria depends on his re-election in 2019. Buhari stated this at the Southeast mega rally at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Imo State, organized by Governor Rochas Okorocha. This is as notable Igbo leaders in APC in the South East region shunned Okorocha’s rally. Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu; serving ministers from the zone; serving senators from the zone; former senators, House of Representatives members from the zone were absent. Also, the state Deputy Governor, Eze Madumere, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, former speakers of the State House of Assembly, former commissioners under Okorocha and over 150 APC leaders in the state shunned the rally. Buhari was represented by the Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha. He said: “The people of the South East are part of Nigeria and they have the right to make claim where the need arises and we will all support them. “The Igbo are not good starters. But whenever they start, they can catch it. Let me say this, 2019 is an election that will make or mar the chances of Igbo in Nigeria. I want Igbo to make a paradigm shift. “We have to know that the position of the presidency is negotiable. You can argue it from the point of strength and not from the point of weakness. 2019 will determine the future of this country. Let me say this, there are 18 Christians and 18 Muslims in Buhari’s cabinet. Even the Vice President is a Christian. I see a whole lot of people coming out to be president. Let me tell them Nigeria is not a Banana republic.” In his remark, the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, said: “In politics, what you see is what you believe. I am impressed with the crowd that I have seen here. It is a sign that the Igbo people love Buhari. “We are tired of PDP deceiving the people. What they could not do in 16 years, they want us to do it in 3 years. How many times did they invite the Igbo to the ground- breaking ceremony of the second Niger Bridge? “Many have spoken on the enormous projects of the Federal Government in this part of the country, but it is not yet over. More are cooking.” Speaking also, the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha said: “Let me start by saying that Igbo people love Buhari and the president should know that Igbo people love him. “I am happy for our new brand National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole. I describe him as the silencer of PDP. Adams Oshiomhole is a hope of APC and we look up to him to give us the best. “We are one in South East. We are celebrating the leadership of President Buhari. People have argued that we made a mistake. It is just that in 2015, Igbo did not believe in Buhari but in 2018, Igbo now believe in Buhari.” Also speaking at the rally, former governor of Bornu State, Modu Sherriff, said: “Okorocha is the man of the people. There is no part of this country Okorocha has not received a title. I am very happy with what I have seen today. It means that Okorocha is in charge. We believe that in 2019, the Igbo will give Buhari five million votes.” Former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, said: “From the South South part of the country, we will give Buhari 80 per cent of our votes.”

Sometimes it takes a number of decades to know the meaning of something that has been with you.

Even in the N200 note, it was boldly drawn; where cows are heading to eat farm produce.

I guess that is what is really happening now, what do you think?

Politics / Aggrieved Ex-militants Write Buhari, Dokubo Over 5yrs Suit On Non-inclusion by Corpersgist: 5:32am On Jul 03, 2018
No fewer than 18 former militant leaders from three states of the Niger Delta region have sent a protest letter to President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged disobedience by the Presidential Amnesty Office to orders of the court in the ongoing five years litigation over their non-inclusion. They also called on the current Presidential Amnesty boss, Prof Charles Dokubo to intervene in their case. The 18 aggrieved ex-militant leaders, drawn from Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa states, who had embraced amnesty under the Third Phase, warned that though they embraced amnesty in 2012 and had taken their grievances to a Federal High Court in suit number FHC/YNG/CS/102/2013 in compliance with the peace preached by the Federal Government, the failure of the Amnesty programme to obey court order was provocative. The protest letter endorsed by the aggrieved ex-militants Asenekiri Oyinle, Trydi Okpeke, Angiama-Owei Oyindoubra, John Government, Henry Gomoromo, John Sawyer, Dollar Motor, Selebi Ayowei, Bobra Angese, Ekerebi Umber and others noted that the failure of the Presidential Amnesty Office, under Kingsley Kuku and Brig. General Paul Boroh (retd), to comply with several court directives to appear before the court or find ways to settle out of court with the ex-militants was provoking renewed tension and frustration among the youths.
