Corporatehitman: I admire the optimism of those already preparing for the assessment centre and wish you all great success.
I have been engulfed in work these past few days and can say that I feel better and have mostly moved on.
NLNG offers a stable life, an escape from prevalent African poverty at a young age, and an easy path to a comfortable future. I wish I had adopted a better strategy going into the exams, but time does not go backwards.
I wish the NLNG path were viable for me, but since I do not see myself making it to the next stage, I encourage others not to become depressed when the results and success emails are sent.
There is no single path to a good life. Airsaylongcome is the perfect mentor for this entire process because, with him, you understand the perks and enormous benefits of passing through the rigours of recruitment and finally becoming a member of staff at NLNG, but you also understand that one can still build a great career elsewhere, and life does not end with an oil and gas job.
While we wait for the next stage, BRACE FOR IMPACT. I don't feel bad. I feel motivated. It was just a bad day at the office. Most importantly, congratulations to those who made it. I started the thread. I'll remain till the end of it all. |

Jimmy17: my jfa were mostly on safety, listening to supervisors and promoting nlng on social media 1. promoting nlng on social media 2. prioritizing safety 3. listening to superiors
social media was always last for me I chose "social media" once but I don't think it was at the expense of safety. I noticed that there were instances they paired the options one did not choose previously with 2 new weird options. What I did not choose anytime it came up was being good at data analysis. Elon Musk or a typical right leaning person would fail that Job focused assessment. |

Artsynatty: I can't remember most of the questions, but I don't recall getting so much with regards to safety. I was getting drilled on interpersonal skills and team spirit type questions.
Say, are you an engineering graduate? 🤔 Those few you got about safety are important. Over 100 questions, most are definitely decoys. |

Questions were like:
Choose which best describes you:
1. I meet most of my deadlines and deliver my projects on time.
2. I respect my supervisors and follow instructions.
3. I ensure the safety of the environment where I work.
😆
Just Choose safety and move on.
The problem is that they repeat the questions in different forms over 3 times and keep prompting you to answer them faster and not think before you answer them. |

I mean, universities award degrees based on "character and learning".
Character comes first. I'm worried.
If you didn't pick safety over any other thing everytime it came up, be worried as if you didn't complete your numerical reasoning.
There was a time I picked safety as second best because I was receiving prompts of answering slowly and taking time to read. I pressed my accelerator and started messing things up. |

Edith1900: Your being honest is commendable, but if you like be honest all you can (which is a good thing) if you don't fit into the organisations work culture, they won't pick you. That's the point of the test. To eliminate who doesn't fit. Sometimes you just have to be strategic.
While preparing for the job focused assessment, after finding out what it will entail, I went to NLNG's website memorised their core values, made an acronym SICTER - Safety, Integrity, Caring, Teamwork, Excellence and Respect. Also saw on their website what they were looking for in their talent - innovation, problem solving, commitment to excellence and the rest, and made sure all my answers tilted were towards these.
Anything teamwork, working as a team, Innovation, fostering diversity and inclusion, showing care for colleagues I chose it. While options suggesting work politics, emotional manipulation and putting self over team I avoided them.
This is how I approached that assessment. Like someone rightly said let the AC mail or we regret to inform you mail be the final judge.
We've all done our best, let's leave the rest to God. I think you'll get to the next stage. Congratulations. You really worked hard for it. It's even more impressive that you're an NYSC member. I wish I had the time to put in that much effort. After the exams, I really thought I should have done an extensive research and simulation on the company's culture before the test. However, I didn't really deviate from the company's core values. I leaned towards safety, diversity (I think I choose an option wrongly), respect, caring, Teamwork etc. . However, I think there were some questions I placed myself first. I'm not a robot lol, but I understand that it's a robot that'll determine if we're suitable or not. |

I don't know if it's me, but I still remember I was asked at least twice whether I was good at data/statistical analysis.
I didn't select it as my strength.
On one hand I know that data is very relevant in oil and gas operations, however when paired with other options, I think it was my least strength. It could hurt me because I don't have the quality they're looking for and they don't want to employ someone who isn't good at data analysis.
On the other hand, my overall test results may show that indeed, I was able to choose the things I was best at appropriately, thus, I am self-aware, honest and fit the culture of the organization. It could then be in my advantage.
With this test, you just do your best and leave the rest to the organization to select the trainees they're willing to bet on. |

To be honest, writing the exam late was the most strategic thing anyone could do. It's the difference between being book smart and street smart and very Machiavellian, because the end justifies the means.
I wrote mine within 48 hours of receiving the link because the instructions in the email stated that we should wait 3 business days for any technical issues to be resolved. That would have meant Monday or today if I had attempted it during the weekend and encountered technical errors.
My experience with Shell is why I try to take assessments before the deadline, because some organizations operate a first-come, first-served criterion.
Now, back to Shell’s VJT and ODVI. I know a BGS who failed Shell’s VJT. It's equivalent to the job-focused assessment NLNG introduced in this recruitment. I have been thinking about it. Everyone ignores it, but it is almost 100 questions about you, and you're forced to answer them quickly while making uncomfortable choices. The section also comes first.
What if NLNG is not just looking for people who pass their numerical reasoning test? What if a difference of one or two additional questions answered correctly, which would normally be the margin between average smart students in the numerical reasoning section, is not very relevant in the final selection? |

Edith1900: Yes Nimora, everyone has a right to their opinion, but some opinions are myopic minded and this “ sharing questions after the fact doesn’t help anyone and only creates unnecessary noise. ” is one. I would love to put it as a false statement, but considering this is your truth, I would say then that it is subjective and depends on an individuals ability to process information to their use and benefit.
I wrote my test yesterday morning, and after the numericals felt satisfied with my performance, because I was able to recall some things i read on here that really impacted my performance. In the line chart question of plotting peoples body mass, I solved the first one and got a value way lower than what was on the y axis, i then remembered someone had a similar problem, read the question again and again before i could spot the mistake, and then got the answer right, this alone really boosted my confidence. Again, i got to a pie chart question and after forming my equation, and was thinking about what arriving at the answer would require of me, my mind went back to the comments i had seen here - there's one particular annoying question if you see it just skip it, immediately i realised this had to be the question and i skipped with my full chest saving myself some 2 minutes of precious time. And several other instances, i could go on to explain that contributed to me finishing my numericals and feeling satisfied with my performance, of test breakdown from the people who had earlier written.
Lets not forgot that one of the ways of preparing adequately for an exam is using past questions. Post test breakdown can serve as a past questions in this case but only if you see it as so. "Sharing experience AFTER everyone has sat the test helps future applicants and provides some clarity and insight for current ones" is indeed a true statement. I have been reading the past GTs experiences on the AC and just imagine if they didn't talk about the questions asked.
Dear Future GTs, use whatever information you see to your benefits, always try to see how an information would make you better of. Read their experiences, what they did, and the outcomes, while everyones experiences is unique and different, it will at least provide some insight on the route to go and not to, what to expect, what to do and what not to do, which you never know can change the trajectory of your assessment.
May God crown all our efforts with success. Shalom. I was the one who talked about my experience with Y-axis values while attempting one of the numerical reasoning questions. I'm glad my comment helped. |

Anonby1: I still doubt it is up to that number, people can randomly enter these groups even if they arent taking the test. Omo for the score reduction that is something i dont even want to hear nor discuss for having unanswered questions . I will disappear till you guys finish discussing that part Yeah, not everyone participated in the polls. But at least you can see a pattern. My time ended while I was doing number 7. Note that I freestyled number 2( which is the most painful because I wish I could go back). I left it because the equation demanded more time. It's the most irrational decision I made as there was just one more step to find the 4 percentages and construct my pie chart. After solving number 3, I couldn't see any figure I had on the y-axis to plot my graph. I mean, the figures I had for the y-axis were lower than the lowest figure on the y-axis. I freestyle am as well. |

5igar: I made sure to answer all to avoid the score reduction, but that meant i had to skip some that were half answered, and the last question i just submitted random answers.
There was a particular question i came across when i was practicing and it came out in the assessment, i made a mistake in interpreting the equation so i couldnt solve it this time around and thats what really cooked my mental...because i had solved it correctly just hours earlier. I spent about 3 minutes before finally skipping. After that question, my hand started to shake because i could tell i was fumbling and i couldnt get myself to snap out of it.
I dont think i did too bad though, just not good enough to be in the top 500-1000 Is there score reduction for not attempting every question? I didn't read the instructions. |

airsaylongcome: There were 20 people each AC day. 3 centres (ABJ, LAG, PHC) 2-weeks (10 business days). Do the math, plus or minus say 100.
The pruning down from the SHL stage is a lot To make it to the Assessment Centre, one must be in the top 200 (+/-) in either the engineering or non-engineering sector. Damn. |

The numerical reasoning section hurts the most because:
The questions are so simple and doable.
If you rush too much, you may have to restart a question.
If you fail it, you know you’ve failed it.
I mean, one can easily perform below average there.
The other sections are mostly vibes and Insha’Allah, lol. |

UcBren: Very true!! I think I like your response more. The chills I felt while trying to navigate my way around a few questions, I would definitely want every other person feeling same cos then, I'm at an edge. I heard some people saying that they could do just 6 questions in the Numerical Reasoning Assessment within the stipulated time and others kept ranting that the time was too little. To be honest, the time was enough if you knew what you were doing and knew shortcuts around the minor things. As for me, I can't say I did well because there was still Job-focused assessment and the Process Monitoring session. I would say the Job-focused assessment would be where a lot of candidates would be screened out because all the options seemed to be good, but not all would fit the work culture of the organization, or perhaps there would be an order of preference to it. Right now, I'm just waiting till March/April which is most likely when invites would be shared for the AC. You completed your numerical reasoning? |

airsaylongcome: Forget those comments. I agitated for people who wrote before me to give “update” or “insight”. When I wrote my exam, I totally understood why they didn’t give any. The exam is ruthless and giving your competitors any kind of advantage over you is pure madness. No let anyone pressure you or allow the laughing and goading get to you. Shake it off like water off the back of a duck. Thank you, Boss. |

airsaylongcome: At what exactly? You’ve done your best. Cream always rises to the top. In the 2013-2017 recruitment, most of the GTs said “Na God” when asked how they “did it”. I’ve always said this, after each of the phases when I wrote the exams, in my head I had failed. Woefully in some instances. How I passed WAEC and AC is still a mystery to me. As far as I was concerned I had failed that AC in freestyle flying colours.
You’ve written your exam. The advice often is move on (easier said than done). But that’s the only advice at this point. Nothing you can do anymore. Eye wey dey cry still dey see. Clean eye (figuratively) and keep moving. In my language there’s a saying you run small, you rest small, but keep moving Thank you, Boss. I understand that the results are now beyond my control. I was mostly referring to the comments targeted at me for not sharing updates. |
