LAGOS, Nigeria — In a striking glimpse into Nigeria’s escalating war with Islamist militants, mortuary records from a single Nigerian hospital show that the number of detainees who died in military custody more than tripled in June, after a state of emergency was declared in the northeast.

Overall, the records obtained by the Associated Press for the nine months from Oct. 5, 2012, to July 5 indicate that the military is killing thousands in its crackdown on the uprising in northeast Nigeria.

Gunmen dressed in military uniform have killed 19 people in north-eastern Nigeria, near the border with Cameroon.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers stopped motorists on a highway in Borno state and shot and hacked them to death.

It's the latest attack in a region which has suffered violence from the Islamist sect Boko Haram.

The BBC's Nigeria correspondent Tomi Oladipo has more.
