USCG Debates Which Cutters to Decommission
By philip ewing
Published: 13 Nov 2009 12:27

The U.S. Coast Guard's aging fleet of high endurance cutters is in such bad shape that officials can't choose which ships to retire first as their replacements enter service.

Coast Guard officials took delivery Nov. 6 of their second national security cutter, the Waesche, and work is proceeding on the third, Stratton, said Capt. Bruce Baffer, head of the Coast Guard's surface acquisitions, but the service doesn't know yet which of its older ships to replace with the new ones.

"We have a number of schedules, but it seems to change about weekly," Baffer said. "It's hard to tell which ones are in worse shape."

In the past year, the Coast Guard has had to sideline two of its 378-foot high-endurance cutters, the Dallas and Gallatin, for major engineering work. Officials initially would have said those two ships should leave service first - to be replaced by the national security cutters Bertholf and Waesche - but now they don't want to lose the money they invested in repairing them, Baffer said.

The Coast Guard's four decade-old Hamilton-class cutters are disintegrating even as crews continue to drive them hard in missions at sea. When the Coast Guard makes its budget submission to Congress each year, Commandant Adm. Thad Allen includes photos that show the results of corrosion, fire and wear on ships that continue to operate at ..

As if I ever cared about being ignored, or monkey talk. In fact, it works best for me.

You know a nation is useless when they are donated a decommissioned, hand-me-down coast cutter, and they decide to recommission it as their frigate.

This old, decommissioned, grand mother of a vessel belongs in the museum.

NaijaPikinGidi: No! AndrewZA ... your comment appeared to suggest that NNS Thunder was obsolete and couldn't get to Australia on its initial full tank capacity. And that was exactly what Agaugust rightly pointed out in his response to you! Topping-up fuel was not necessary at that point of the journey ... but the Ship's Captain made the operational decision and rightly so ... as a precautionary measure. But how come you failed to correct the misleading comments from SAEngine and his co-idi.ots ... regarding the Ship's arrival, berthing and refueling procedures? It surely took our informed comments to make you clarify yours! Way to go! grin
Well, it didn't get to Australia on "its initial full tank capacity" now, did it?

CAMEROONPRIDE: these Nigerians and their bogus and fake claims.eh eh .empty barrels who masterminded the art of chest beating . the NA is in bad state fact. people are still being slaughtered fact. the army is divided along ethnic lines fact.

since they are people here fond of distorting history, i'm forced to go back on the bakassi saga, NA never occupied more villages than the Cameroonian army, this is for the one who said the Nigeria rag tag army occupied more than half of bakassi like wtf.

The CA(Cameroonian army killed more militants and soldiers fact. despite being on two fronts(rebels militants, and NA attacks) we managed to defeat our enemies and to lose few soldiers. last but not the least we kicked out the NA and gained full control of Bakassi. next step is kick the civilians out in order to fully exploit the area. as for now bakassi will b under military rule for the next 5years.

again I urge Nigerians to humble themselves. I don't think the term past glory should b used here ..more like stop this delusion of grandeur and senseless boasting over nothing attitude. where are all the groups who were causing mayhem and havocs in the gulf of guinea/ niger delta area? the CA is not making prisoners, piracy decreased since we took over etc.. Nigeria has been proven to b useless both for his neighbors. I rest my case

NIGERIAN ARMY ABANDONS PEACEKEEPING MISSIONS IN MALI AND DARFUR TO COMBAT BOKO HARAM

Andrew McGregor

July 25, 2013

Nigeria has begun to pull back troops from peacekeeping missions in Mali and Darfur as its two-month-old offensive against Boko Haram militants begins to falter even as northern Nigerian extremists turn to soft targets to disrupt the efforts of security forces. Launched on May 14, the offensive has proved controversial from the start, with critics describing it as ineffective and shockingly casual in its regard for civilian lives.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by CraigB: 7:19pm On Aug 26, 2013
NaijaPikinGidi: AndrewZA thinks the Nigeria led AFISMA operation did not yield anything because according to him Northern Mali is not safe. According to him the so-called Tuareg seperatist are still alive and strong. My question to him was:

If his assumption is correct, would there have been peaceful elections in Mali? Would this once kidnapped Swiss woman have returned to Mali?

http://www.mail.com/int/news/world/2294906-woman-taken-hostage-mali-timbuktu.html#.2394-stage-set1-8

Mali is much safer today thanks to Nigeria and France! grin grin

AndrewZA please answer the question!
Stop diverting matters. You son of a coward. Son of a deserter. grin

The "peaceful" elections of Mali are irrelevant.

The elections were "peaceful" in spite of your having abandoned your mission.

You ran back home, without any explanation. Where is your "completion statement"?

Show us what you said when you withdrew, which then would confirm that you deemed the mission completed and nicely wrapped up.

Don't give us stories. Just your statement as issued on the date of your withdrawal - confirming your tale.

You ran from Mali, cowards.

You can't talk to us about taking the fight to anyone. You abandoned comrades who'd relied on you and sapped the energy out of them.

You can't speak because your soldiers are home.

.
Thank you for withdrawing everything you ever posted about "the unsafe South Africa". It's good to know the whole world is not safe.

Now back to the issue of how you withdrew from Mali and ran home, at the back of lies about withdrawing "in protest".
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by CraigB: 2:16pm On Aug 26, 2013
Donian007: Hmm! I have just one thing to point out here for now.......If news headlines are to form the summary of our convictions then that should be an argument for another thread. What interests me here is the unending, mischievous and ignorant use of a particular headline to summarise a scenario instead of properly and objectively analysing its content and context. However, an enlightened mind would observe that headlines always differ even when the reportage is on thesame happening and so it suggests a ridiculous, senseless, childish and cowardly mind is on ample display when such a person hangs on such headlines. Nigeria's withdrawal from Mali and Sudan was greeted with too much and unnecessary speculations but all in a bid to malign her, reporters quoted anonimous and identified sources to promote their work as being authentic, correct and reliable, some even lied wether ignorantly or by design about the total manpower of the Nigerian Army to support their reports that insinuates manpower shortage. Others made claims of incapability, even Nigerian senators where quoted to support such reports.
MY SUBMISSION: The Nigerian military is very much involved incountry and abroad, from the Niger Delta(now fairly demilitarised) to the NorthCentral spanning across the NorthEast and its borders and has a large force to contain its operations. The Nigerian military is set up mainly to protect its people and territory, anyother engagement is a special and voluntary favour it does and so is not and should not be under any obligation to send its troops out for whatsoever reason and withdrawing them must not and should not cause any headaches or pains to anyone, therefore the much hulaballoo is unnecesary. Mali was a peace enforcement and that explains the absence of BLUE BERETS, HELMETS AND VESTS, for us to now start seeing the blues marks gives a signal. Also Nigeria's involvement in Mali had another spectacular motive regarding the insurgency back home and so at the accomplishment of these she returned home having no interest in letting her gallant and brave warriors bear the BLUE MARKS.
Sudan was also a mission Nigeria values because of her goodwill towards Africa and still have troops there as well as Mali. "NIGERIA ABANDONS MALI TO FIGHT BOKO HARAM" Nigeria was fighting Boko Haram before she went to Mali and continued fighting Boko Haram there.
"NIGERIA WITHDRAWS FROM MALI, SUDAN.
"NIGERIA CONCLUDE AFISMA AS MINUSMA SETS IN, WITHDRAWS TROOPS"..... All report thesame event but will differ in the real message to be passed across and so, my comrades and compatriots I ask that you allow the ignorant ones be. #hope some people wont quote me and start foaming their stupidity#
Nice story. Too bad it doesn't explain why the withdrawal was "in protest".

And this is a public forum. You will be quoted anytime and by anyone.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by CraigB: 1:45pm On Aug 26, 2013
NaijaPikinGidi: Until the SANDF understand the intricacies of warfare in Africa, they'll be gaining no good experience or reputation in a hurry! Troop withdrawal after a successful military operation in Mali is routine. BTW the Nigerian Police Force is taking care of peace keeping operations with NA Signals and medical support! The Nigerian Police is doing what participating militaries in the Mali PKO are doing! Food for thought on why NA needs and is seeking harder action!
The Mali withdrawal was so routine that you had to say it was done "in protest"?

I suppose it is routine to withdraw "in protest" then.
cool Routinely Naai-gerian? Is that it?

Sure, dude. That's was quite a routine abandonment of a mission. You certainty gained a reputation out of that. grin
