President Goodluck Jonathan has said that with the security measures put in place by his administration, the Boko Haram sect is being progressively weakened. Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday while receiving the outgoing representative of the delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. David Mac Rae, Jonathan said his administration would remain proactive in combating terrorism. According to the president, although measures taken by his administration have significantly reduced the occurrence of terrorist attacks in the country, the government will continue doing everything possible to further enhance security in all parts of the country. "As a government, we are doing everything possible to improve our country on all fronts. We are consistently adapting our security architecture to deal with terrorism which has become a challenge to the whole world. Boko Haram is being progressively weakened but we are not resting on our oars. We will continue to do everything possible to achieve greater security for all who reside within our borders," the president said. Jonathan, who maintained that many positive things were happening in the country, added that his administration would continue to do its best to correct negative perceptions about the nation, such as the notion of widespread insecurity and corruption. He welcomed the declaration by the outgoing ambassador that he had recently travelled to the Niger Delta and some northern states and found people there going about their normal lives and businesses without fear. |

MAKURDI — An early hour mysterious fire, yesterday, claimed the lives of a man, his wife and four-year-old daughter along the ever busy Katsina-Ala Street, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital. Vanguard gathered from an eyewitness that the victims, Terhemba Makaar, a senior official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, and his two family members were roasted in the inferno before help could reach them. According to the witness, Mrs. Terwase Ormye, who is a neighbour to the victims, “the fire started at about 2 am. We were suddenly woken by shouts of ‘fire’ from the house. “We heard someone screaming ‘help me! help me! The flame and smoke were too much and the house had only one door with burglary proof so it became very difficult for anyone to go in and rescue them. “While some of us were busy pouring water on the building to put out the fire, the few hands available struggled to break a portion of the house when the inferno was still raging. “Unfortunately, when youths in the area succeeded in breaking into the house, Mrs. Makaar and her four-year-old daughter had already been burnt beyond recognition while their father who though suffered little burns had already been choked to death. “Their only son, nine- year-old Aondugu Makaar, was rescued and immediately rushed to Saint Theresa Hospital, Makurdi where he is currently receiving treatment and in stable condition.” Cause of the fire On the cause of the fire, the witness said: “It could be as a result of power surge because it was barely 30 minutes after the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, restored electricity to the area when the fire started.” She lamented that the victims would have been rescued if officials of the state fire service had arrived the scene on time. She said: “We tried to reach them only to discover that they had another incident to take care of in the north bank area of the town. Before they arrived the scene, the entire house had been engulfed by inferno.” Contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Deputy Superintendent Daniel Ezeala, said the police had commenced investigation into the incident. |
Pandemonium broke out in Abeokuta when a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ogun State, Mr Emmanuel Ajala, was beaten blue black by suspected political thugs, who also stripped him naked. Ajala was attacked at about 6:30pm, on Saturday, while going to his Gbonagun home in Abeokuta. His attackers were apparently on his trail. Vanguard gathered that three men operating on a motorcycle were alleged to have overtaken the politician’s car and flagged him down then pounced on him. Ajala, a former legislator in Abeokuta South Local Government of the state, was also reported to have been dragged down from the car, while his cloth was torn. It was, however, gathered that he was saved from the attackers when they sighted an oncoming vehicle and took to their heels. Narrating his ordeal, the politician said: “They accused me of being too bold to comment on political issues, which they considered uncomplimentary and warned me to desist. “It was an oncoming car they saw that made them to bolt away. I have equally reported the case to Obantoko police station.” Contacted, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the victim reported at the police station, but had failed to report back as scheduled for further investigation of the case, explaining that his failure to report back will affect investigation. “The man reported the case, and he was asked to be followed to the scene, but said he was scared and when asked to also come back the following day for further investigations, he failed to report. “There is no way the police could investigate without him. He has killed investigation, so whether his claim is true or not, nobody can tell.” |
Oceans that grow more acidic through Man's fossil fuel burning emissions, can amplify global warming by releasing less of a gas that helps shield Earth from radiation, a study said Sunday. And the authors warned the potentially vast effect they uncovered is not currently factored into climate change projections. Scientists say that Man's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions contribute to planetary warming by letting the Sun's heat through the atmosphere but trapping heat energy reflected back from Earth, so creating a greenhouse effect. They also lower the pH balance of the world's oceans, making them more acidic, and hamper production of dimethyl sulphide (DMS), a sulphur compound, by plankton, said the study. DMS released into the atmosphere helps reflect incoming radiation from the Sun, reducing surface temperatures on Earth. Using climate simulations, the team said an 18 percent decline in DMS emissions by 2100 could contribute as much as 0.48 degrees Celsius (0.9 deg Fahrenheit) to the global temperature. "To our knowledge, we are the first to highlight the potential climate impact due to changes in the global sulphur cycle triggered by ocean acidification," the authors wrote. "Our result emphasises that this potential climate impact mechanism of ocean acidification should be considered in projections of future climate change." They warned that ocean acidification may also have other, yet unseen, impacts on marine biology that may provoke further declines in DMS emissions. |
