Champions League: Real Madrid v Napoli - match preview, predicted starting line-ups & Opta stats 15 February at 11:00 The atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will be considerably different to the last time that Napoli visited the home of the Spanish giants Real Madrid. In 1987, Diego Maradona took his Napoli side, fresh from winning their first Serie A title, to the Spanish capital in the first round of the old European Cup playing out a bad tempered match in front of no fans (Real had to play the game behind closed doors due to crowd trouble from the previous season.) The Italians crashed out at the earliest stage of the old format of the competition, losing 3-1 over two legs. This evening will see the two sides lock horns for the first time since that encounter and fans can anticipate a completely different type of occasion as they meet in the round of the last 16. This game almost guarantees goals as Madrid who are unbeaten in ten UEFA Champions League matches, have scored at least twice in the last six games in the competition. Napoli who are unbeaten away from home in this year’s competition and are arguably playing the best football in Europe right now, are also unbeaten in all competitions since October winning 11 out of 13 games. Maurizio Sarri and his Napoli team can take heart from the fact that Madrid do tend to struggle against Italian sides. Real Madrid have been eliminated in seven of their last eight ties with clubs from the peninsula in the European Cup or Champions League in the knock out stages; the only exception was against Roma in last season’s round of 16. But in order for the Partenopei to progress past this round for the first time, they must try and stop Los Merengues from scoring for the first time in 34 Champions League home games. Hardly a realistic prospect considering they have only kept one clean sheet in their last 10 Champions League away games. As for Madrid, they sit top of the La Liga table having suffered just one domestic loss this season despite not playing at their best. Their Champions League form is imperious having made the knock out stages every season for the last 20 and have made at least the semi-finals in the last six. But head coach Zinedine Zidane will know that in order to progress his side will have to be at their very best. Both sides will probably line up in like for like 4-3-3 formations, so the game may depend on individual brilliance to decide the outcome. Real Madrid with the loss of goal scoring form from Cristiano Ronaldo, who has gone almost five games without a goal in the competition, will look to French striker Karim Benzema who has scored four of Real Madrid’s last six Champions League goals and will be hoping to add to his career total of 53 in the competition. Napoli, post Gonzalo Higuain, have found a surprise replacement for goals in Belgian Dries Mertens, having already scored 16 goals in Serie A, the winger turned forward has scored four and assisted two of Napoli’s last eight Champions League goals. His continued form will be essential if Napoli want to pull of a surprise against the current holders of the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens. Probable stating line-ups: Real Madrid (4-3-3) Navas; Marcelo, Varane, Ramos, Carvajal; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Ronaldo, Benzema, Vazquez Napoli (4-3-3) Reina; Ghoulam, Koulibaly, Albiol, Hysaj; Hamsik, Jorginho, Zielinski; Insigne, Mertens, Callejon |
Bayern Munich welcome Arsenal to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night having put together an 11-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. As for Arsenal, they travel to Germany for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash looking to give themselves the opportunity to progress through to the quarter-finals of this competition for the first time since 2010. Bayern MunichCarlo Ancelotti, coach of Real Madrid reacts during the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final first leg match between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on April 2, 2014 © Getty Images Losing to both Atletico Madrid and Rostov during the group stages would not have been in Carlo Ancelotti's plans, but his team have been provided with a tie which they would have been delighted with, regardless of whether they finish in first or second place in the group. While Ancelotti will speak positively when asked about Arsenal's credentials, he knows that many of his group of players have experienced success over the English side over the past four seasons and he will expect them to deliver once again. However, Bayern have been far from convincing in the final third since the middle of January, with the Bundesliga giants scoring no more than two goals in any of their last five matches in all competitions. That will fill Arsenal with hope ahead of what is a daunting trip, but it will surely only be a matter of time until Robert Lewandowski begins to recapture his touch in front of goal on a regular basis and Thomas Muller ends a dismal run in the final third, with the attacker scoring just once in 15 outings. What will sit well with Ancelotti is their toughness at the back, with it being 12 games since they last conceded more than one goal in a match, and the Italian coach will have every confidence that his team will finish the job in North London if they can prevent Arsenal from netting an away goal. Back-to-back defeats to Watford and Chelsea have contributed to Arsenal sitting 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea, and it appears that Arsene Wenger's side will once again have to focus on trying to win a trophy in a different competition. Wenger would have hoped for an easier tie having edged out Paris Saint-Germain for first position in their group but luck went against his club as they were drawn against one of European football's powerhouses. The Arsenal manager must also cope with the poor form of Mesut Ozil and a defence which has looked increasingly fragile at times since the start of 2017, but he at least has options in attack and Alexis Sanchez coming off the back of a two-goal performance against Hull City at the weekend. Both strikes were somewhat fortuitous - with the first coming off his hand and the second a late penalty - but it improved a streak which had seen Sanchez previously score just four times in his previous 12 appearances. A decision must also be made on whether to include Olivier Giroud from the start, with the Frenchman being left on the bench at the weekend despite scoring in six of his last eight outings. Mohamed Elneny is also in line to be included in the centre of the park, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain either being used in a more advanced position or being dropped to the substitutes' bench. Ozil is almost a certainty to start, despite the level of his recent displays, with Alex Iwobi, Theo Walcott and Giroud all vying for a place in attack alongside him and Sanchez. Petr Cech is expected to feature in goal, despite spending much of the European campaign on the bench with David Ospina being granted preference away from the Premier League. Bayern could be boosted by the return of Franck Ribery, but Jerome Boateng remains absent with a shoulder injury. Bayern Munich possible starting lineup: Neuer, Lahm, Martinez, Hummels, Alaba, Alonso, Vidal, Thiago, Muller, Robben, Lewandowski Arsenal possible starting lineup: Cech, Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Elneny, Coquelin, Walcott, Iwobi, Ozil, Sanchez Head To Head Wednesday's clash will represent the 11th time these two teams have faced each other in a competitive clash, with Arsenal claiming three wins to Bayern's five. The last three contests have produced different results, but the most recent encounter - in November 2015 - saw Bayern run out 5-1 victors at the Allianz Arena. Arsenal have picked up one win and one draw on their five visits to Germany, with the sole success coming in the second leg of their second-round tie in March 2013. We say: Bayern Munich 3-1 Arsenal Arsenal have the firepower to cause Bayern problems on Wednesday night but given the club's most recent record in second-round ties in Europe, as well as their relatively inconsistent form on the road, we think Bayern will win comfortably and that Arsenal will do well to remain in the tie ahead of the return clash in North London. |

The Champions League Round of 16 often has some disappointing matchups in it as it builds up to a more dramatic quarterfinal round, but this year there are some tremendous pairings. The biggest of them all might be Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain, a tie that kicks off in the Parc des Princes on Tuesday. Both teams have had their struggles this season -- both are in second place in their respective leagues, and both have had long injury woes and stretches of outright bad form. Barcelona’s form has improved of late, though, and they’ve finally started to look something like the team they’re supposed to be, while PSG have still found themselves unable to catch Monaco in the Ligue 1 standings. Of course, Paris Saint-Germain will be leaning heavily on history in this tie — while they’ve never fared well against Barcelona in the Champions League, they’ve also never lost a Round of 16 tie. There’s a first time for everything, but PSG will be hoping to avoid creating that particular historical precedent just yet — and while it will take a massive step up in form for them to topple Barcelona in the Round of 16, if they get off to a strong start in the first leg of the tie and hold onto their momentum then they certainly have the talent it would take to pull it off. But Barcelona are Barcelona, and that means that it’s unlikely we see an upset — but the possibility is there, and the hope for it exists. Now we just have to wait to see the outcome. Team news Barcelona have a trio of injuries that could wind up hurting them. Javier Mascherano will be missing off the back line because of injury, while the valuable presence of Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal on the bench will also be missing thanks to injuries of their own — depriving Barcelona of valuable versatility late in the game. Fortunately, all of their attacking trio of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Neymar will be available as they aim to terrorize PSG’s defense. That will be problematic for Paris Saint-Germain, who are without key defender Thiago Silva thanks to injury. Midfield shield Thiago Motta will be out as well with a suspension — but depending on who you ask, that could be more of a blessing than a curse. Projected lineups (left to right) Paris Saint-Germain (4-3-3): Kevin Trapp; Maxwell, Presnel Kimpembe, Marquinhos, Serge Aurier; Blaise Matuidi, Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti; Julian Draxler, Edinson Cavani, Lucas Barcelona (4-3-3): Marc-André Ter Stegen; Jordi Alba, Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Piqué, Sergi Roberto; Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitić; Neymar, Luis Suárez, Lionel Messi |
