pocohantas:So essentially, the difference between someone who possesses the degree and has those qualities and someone who doesn't possess the degree but has those qualities is the paper? Meaning what you are actually interested in is the paper? |
pocohantas:I agree that we all make choices but there is always an underlying reason for which those choices are made and I believe we should question those underlying reasons. That's the essence of this discussion. I might decide not to date a disabled person but my reason for doing this isn't the same reason why you wouldn't want to date someone who doesn't have a degree, hence why your analogy is flawed. The fact that you can't see how your analogy doesn't apply to this discussion is quite worrying. You made a choice not to date a guy without a degree and from weighing the underlying reasons for making the choice, I felt they were misguided and ill-informed probably because you haven't thought seriously about it, and all I'm trying to do is enlighten you on the subject |
As far as I am concerned, there are three hallmarks of being educated. 1. The ability to express yourself articulately in spoken and written English(or the lingua franca of your country) 2. The acquisition of a skill or knowledge that is marketable and lucrative. 3. Being extensively informed about your environment and the world at large. The above are what defines an educated person. and if I was a lady, this would be my criteria in choosing a guy, and not some piece of paper that can be easily bought or undeservedly acquired. |
Peachess:Could you define what you mean by "an education," if you don't mind? |
pocohantas:Stop painting flawed analogies. They make your argument very unconvincing. Discriminating against blind or cripple women when choosing a partner isn't the same as discriminating against people who don't have degrees. They aren't the same thing. My focus on tech experts is to illustrate to you how you are drawing a false equivalence between education and having a degree. A degree is merely a written statement that one has acquired knowledge or skill in a certain area. Now if one doesn't have that written statement, it doesn't mean he or she hasn't acquired such knowledge or skill. But your discrimination on the basis of having or not having a degree excludes people who might have education in a particular field, but without the written statement. Like there are lots of courses today that can be self thought. Take for instance a course like history. What's the difference between someone who decided to study history on his own and someone who spent four years in the university studying history? At the end of the day what matters is the knowledge gathered and the person's ability to retain that knowledge and apply it. You should understand that there are different categories of non degree holders just as there are different categories of degree holders. There are non degree holders who are inarticulate, uninformed and without any marketable skills, while there are those that are smart, informed and "educated in various marketable fields." But the problem is that you are painting them all with a single brush. You aren't even considering the SSCE holders who were smart enough to gain admission into good schools but dropped out along the way. You don't box everyone into the same category. |
pocohantas:How about a tech expert in Nigeria with an SSCE degree? I know some of them. Would you also discriminate against them when choosing a partner since they don't have a degree? How about University dropouts in Nigeria that made it into good schools but decided to drop out? Are they also among the category you can't marry? |

QueenSekxy:You don't think you can reason alike in what way exactly? You really need to change environment once in a while and meet new people from all works of life. If you do this you'll notice that having a degree doesn't define a person's scope of thinking or our wealth of knowledge. There are people who are well informed and very intelligent who just don't see any reason to waste money and 4-5 years of their lives going to the university to study a course they can get acquainted with on their own through digital learning. I think the problem you have is that your idea of people without degrees is illiterate men who can't speak good English or write properly and who know nothing about the world. But that's just a one-sided perception. There are lots of intelligent and well informed people without degrees. Some of them are smart enough to get into school and finish but just didn't seem like going through the stress and so dropped out. |
MaritzaNL:There are lots of people without university degrees that are smarter and more informed than majority of people with degrees. I mean no disrespect but there are people even here in Nigeria without degrees whose level of thinking are way above yours. And deciding to judge someone's intelligence or way of thinking based on the ownership of a degree is quite naive. Mark Zuckerburg doesn't own a degree. Steve Jobs didn't own a degree. Lot of the brilliant tech guys working in silicon valley don't have degrees. In fact 35% of the world's billionaires don't have a degree. Degrees are really over rated and given the present financial climate and market dynamics of today's society, I wouldn't classify anyone who decides not to have a degree as unwise. |
Kufie:No. I'd rather a used highlander 2016. |
olanshi:How about the price for used? |
What price can I get a used Toyota Highlander 2017? I want to buy one. |
edoboy33:are you serious? |
Dimples129:Thanks. I know commenting on the thread may seem like boasting, but it actually isn't. Its merely just replying to a question. You can achieve your dream. All you just need to do is focus all your thoughts on what you want to achieve, be specific and detailed. Then take inspired steps towards achieving it whilst believing without a doubt that you'll achieve it. This is what worked for me. I still have bigger goals and I am certain I'll actualize them. |
QueenSekxy:By Nigerian standards, yes. And I ascribe all the glory to God. But that's besides the point of this thread. |
Lalasticlala and dominique please help me move this to front page. I need replies. |
awesome4:okay. thank you. |
This is a serious thread and it's strictly for people who are rich & live independently. You can share where you live, what kind of house you live in, how much you bought or rented the house, the kind of car you drive, and your average total monthly expenses, food etcetera, including the things you love to buy. I'll also appreciate a break down of the kind of places you go to have fun & relax and how much you spend. I have searched for a thread like this on Nairaland and I haven't seen one. I want to know how rich Nigerians spend money and on what. Baba God just answered my call and I want to know how people who God has blessed spend their money. I'll appreciate more comments from people who live on the Island in Lagos because that's where I'll be residing I'm posting on this section because it has lots of activity. |

Download the instagram app. Follow an account that posts pictures of conventionally good looking men. Follow some of the ones that have over 100,000 followers. Then before you post a picture on social media, compare yourself with the pictures of those men. If there isn't much difference, post it. If there is noticeable difference, then don't post it. shikena. |
onatisi:How about you tell me the business you have in mind and the capital that would be needed. But since you want me to be specific, say about 6million as capital. |

ThankYouGod:Not interested. Thanks. |
