Nairaland General › Xenophobic Attack : President-elect Buhari Backs FG's Steps by Cubeet(op): 6:53pm On Apr 18, 2015 |
Abuja – The President-elect, retired Maj.- Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday expressed full support to the steps taken by the Nigerian government to protect its citizens from xenophobic attacks in South Africa. This is contained in a statement issued by Malam Garba Shehu, Director Media and Publicity, All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, in Abuja. “Nigeria’s Head of Mission in Pretoria had taken the right steps by advising the Nigerian community in South Africa to close their shops, stay at home and keep out of trouble. “Nigerians in South Africa should obey the laws of their host country,’’ the statement quoted Buhari as saying. According to the statement, we equally understand that the South African government is making efforts to bring an end to this unfortunate situation. “In the meantime, Nigerians in South Africa should abide by the words of caution extended to them by their government representative in Pretoria. “I am happy to see that the Nigerian government is very well aware of its responsibilities to its citizens in South Africa,’’ the statement stated. Buhari, in the statement, commended the Nigerian government for its decision to monitor the situation in South Africa and evacuate its citizens at any sign of escalation. The statement expressed the president’s - elect sadness at the unfolding events in South Africa, recalling Nigeria’s friendly relations to the country since the end of apartheid. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/xenophobic-attacks-buhari-backs-fgs-steps/ |

Nairaland General › Missiles To Boko Haram: Political Associate of Chadian president Arrested by Cubeet(op): 11:17pm On Nov 22, 2014 |
A close political associate of Chadian President Idriss Déby Itno, Mahamat Bichara Gnoti, has been arrested as he tried to transfer missiles he purchased from the Sudanese army meant for Boko Haram terrorist in northeastern Nigeria. As Cameroonian investigative journalist, Bisong Etahoben, reports via Twitter, Mr. Gnoti was arrested on the Chadian-Sudan border with 19 SAM2 missiles. Reportedly, Mr. Gnoti, who claimed that President Idriss Déby gave him the funds to purchase the weapons, had waved a presidential pass issued to him by Mr. Deby’s office in order to get past border guards but was stopped and searched by the guards who found the deadly weapons on him. According to the Sahara Reporters, there has not been an official confirmation or denial either by the Chadian or the Nigerian authorities. The office of Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd), the National Security Adviser in Nigeria also doesn’t respond. While an aide said Mr. Dasuki is traveling in Mexico. However, the arrest of Mr. Gnoti, if confirmed, will provide solid evidence that the Chadian President is largely behind Boko Haram lightning insurgency in Nigeria’s northwest. Recently, Mr. Derby swindled the Nigerian government of millions of dollars in a failed attempt to negotiate the release of over 200 Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram in April. On September 8th, President Goodluck Jonathan made a dramatic visit to N’djamena to meet with Idris Derby , Mr. Jonathan was accompanied on the trip by former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sherrif. The visit was condemned by opposition figures and civil society groups in Nigeria as they see it as an open embrace of individuals funding Boko Haram militants. An Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis had accused Mr. Sheriff and former Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika of actively funding Boko Haram. http://sunnewsonline.net/news/political-associate-of-chadian-president-idriss-deby-arrested-with-missiles-meant-for-boko-haramhttp://saharareporters.com/2014/11/22/political-associate-chadian-president-idriss-déby-arrested-missiles-meant-boko-haramhttp://www.naij.com/329784-missiles-for-boko-haram-associate-of-chadian-president-arrested.html |
