'They were told to leave': Police boat swoops in and officers order two women wearing hijabs to leave Nice beach despite judge overturning controversial burkini ban
Wearing hijabs and hats, these two women might have thought they could enjoy yesterday on the beach at Nice after a French court overturned the controversial burkini ban.
But it wasn’t long before police appeared and ordered them to leave – just days after armed officers were pictured fining a woman wearing a burkini at the same spot.
The women – one wearing a long dress and the other a trouser suit – were preparing to enjoy a picnic with a young boy when a police launch headed towards them.
The police boat swooped on the women and a male officer spoke to them,’ said a witness to the drama. ‘The women then put all their things away and made their way off the beach. I don’t think any fine was imposed, but they were certainly told to leave.’
The incident was filmed by another beachgoer, who said the women then headed to the Promenade des Anglais to make phone calls before catching a tram.
The burkini ban was introduced following the July terrorist attack in Nice when a lorry was driven into the crowds. A total of 86 people were killed and a further 307 were injured.
The ban prevented anyone from wearing clothes that were ‘overtly religious in nature’.
On Friday, the Council of State – France’s highest appeal court – reversed the ban, saying it was a ‘serious and clearly illegal violation of fundamental freedoms’. But the ruling was quickly dismissed by several towns and cities, including Nice, which vowed to keep the restrictions in place and to continue fining women.
In its decision, the court said local authorities could only introduce measures restricting individual freedoms if wearing the burkini, or other types of clothing that might be linked to religion, represented a ‘proven risk’ to public order.

Founder of Virgin Group Sir Richard Branson escaped death after crashing his bike close to a cliff edge on Caribbean island Virgin Gorda.
The 66-year-old business magnate said he was fortunate to have suffered only a cracked cheek and torn ligaments. Dramatic photos from the accident shows him all bloodied and bruised while receiving emergency treatment at the scene.
In a post on the Virgin website, entitled 'My life flashed before my eyes', he said he was cycling down a hill when he hit a speed bump and was hurled over the handlebars.
"A couple of nights ago I went cycling on Virgin Gorda with Holly and Sam as part of my training for the Virgin Strive Challenge. I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a ‘sleeping policeman’ hump in the road head on. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has struck central Italy, leaving at least six people dead and others trapped under rubble, Italian officials said. The quake hit at 03:36 (01:36 GMT), 76 km (47 miles) southeast of the city of Perugia, at the very shallow depth of 10km (six miles), the USGS said. The Mayor of Amatrice told Italian radio "half the town is gone". In Rome, some buildings shook for 20 seconds, according to La Repubblica newspaper. A family of four had been found under rubble in the town of Accumoli, the town's mayor Stefano Petrucci told RAI TV. Meanwhile police said two people had died in the nearby village of Pescara del Tronto, RAI reported.
There were also reports of serious damage in the town of Amatrice. "The roads in and out of town are cut off. Half the town is gone. There are people under the rubble... There's been a landslide and a bridge might collapse," mayor Sergio Perozzi told RAI radio. Italy's Civil Protection agency described the earthquake as "severe". "It was so strong. It seemed the bed was walking across the room by itself with us on it," Lina Mercantini of Ceselli, Umbria, told Reuters. Rescue teams are being sent to the worst-hit areas, the prime minister's office said.
The quake was initially reported as being magnitude 6.4. It was followed by several powerful aftershocks, La Repubblica newspaper reported. The deputy editor of the British newspaper, The Times, told the BBC that the quake lasted about 20 seconds followed by an aftershock about 20 minutes later which was easily as strong.
"It was pitch dark, very cold. Nobody in our group had a clue what to do in an earthquake," Emma Tucker said, who was in the area at the time.
The USGS predicted the damage could be significant, based on data from previous quakes.
It said the quake struck near the Umbrian city of Norcia, whose picturesque historic centre is a popular tourist site. However Norcia Mayor Nicola Alemanno said no deaths have been reported there.
"The anti-seismic structures of the town have held," he said. "There is damage to the historic heritage and buildings, but we do not have any serious injuries."
In 2009, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in the Aquila region, which was also felt in the Italian capital, left more than 300 dead.
