Abuja. Nigeria's war against corruption appears increasingly selective, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) facing accusations of turning a blind eye to glaring cases involving public officials, while aggressively pursuing others. This skewed pattern undermines the agency's credibility and fuels public cynicism about genuine anti-graft efforts.

Central to recent controversies is the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Hussaini Ishaq Magaji (SAN). Reports allege that Magaji, whose monthly net salary is about ₦583,000, acquired two luxury duplexes in Abuja's upscale Jahi district, each valued at ₦350 million—totaling ₦700 million—within two years of his appointment in 2023. Sources claim the properties feature imported German solar systems worth ₦70 million each and Chinese gym equipment valued at ₦50 million, alongside sound-proof cinemas. Magaji is also accused of tampering with company records in a disputed multi-billion-naira estate case, defying directives from the Attorney-General.

Similarly, billionaire Aliko Dangote has accused Farouk Ahmed, CEO of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), of spending $5 million on secondary school fees for his four children in Switzerland—an expenditure far exceeding a public servant's legitimate income. Dangote demanded a probe, labelling it economic sabotage through biased licensing favouring imports.

These contrast with cases like former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello's ongoing trial, Abubakar Malami's Abacha loot queries, and perceived leniency toward defectors like ex-Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

For the EFCC to regain trust, it must investigate all allegations impartially, regardless of political affiliations. Selective justice breeds impunity and erodes faith in institutions.
