The Academic Staff Union of Universities
on Wednesday said the ongoing strike by
university lecturers would be suspended
within 24 hours once the new resolutions
reached with President Goodluck
Jonathan on November 4 were accepted.
The union, however, described the
statement credited to the Minister of
Education, Nyesom Wike, that ASUU was
making new outrageous demands as
“untrue and absolute lie.”
The union said it asked President
Jonathan to facilitate the endorsement of
resolutions reached with him and signed
by high ranking government official
preferably the Attorney-General of the
Federation but not a permanent
secretary.
ASUU said a representative of the body
including the President of Nigeria Labour
Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, would stand
as witnesses.
The union said it wanted the N200 billion
agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund
for public universities to be warehoused
with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
and disbursed to the benefiting
universities.
ASUU’s position was conveyed by the
union National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola
Aremu, while speaking with The Nation in
an interview in Ibadan on Wednesday.
He said the union appreciated the
intervention of President Jonathan but
noticed that some of the resolutions
reached with the President were not
included in the letter sent to the union.
According to him, the supervising
Minister of Education was economical
with the truth by not telling Nigerians
that apart from the N30 billion earned
allowances released for university staff,
the government was yet to release the
N100 billion claimed to have been
released.

Developments yesterday indicated that the five-
month old strike action of the Academic Staff Union
of Universities, ASUU may be called off this weekend,
as the union holds its National Executive Committee,
NEC meeting Saturday in Kano state.
The meeting is expected to consider the position of
the congresses of the over 60 public universities on
the offer by the federal government to revamp the
institutions.
An anonymous source in the union said the NEC
meeting, which was suspended indefinitely because
of the death of Late Professor Festus Iyayi, a former
president of the Union, maybe be reconvened on
Saturday.
“There is strong indication that the NEC meeting will
be reconvened on Saturday,” he said.
Asked if the strike will actually be suspended, he
said: “Judging by reports from the Monday
congresses we held simultaneously, the union may
suspend the strike on Saturday or Sunday.”
About 20 University chapters of the Union, has voted
in favour of the Suspension in various congress held
during the week, while eight others disagreed.
Meanwhile, the federal government on Friday said it
will implement the decisions reached in the course of
negotiations with the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU) to the letter.
Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom
Wike disclosed this in Benin when he visited the
residence of the late ASUU leader, Prof. Festus Iyayi
to condole with the family.
In a statement issued by the Special Assistant, Media
to the minister, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, Wike led the
Federal Government delegation including the
National Universities Commission, NUC.
The statement quoted the minister to have assured
the family that the ideals that the late scholar fought
and died for ``will never be forgotten’’.
``The Federal Government will diligently implement
the decisions reached in the course of negotiations
with ASUU.

Majority of university teachers yesterday
voted to end the four-month-old strike that
has grounded the public university system
in the country.
About 120 chapters of the Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU) held
congresses at the various institutions and
voted to suspend the strike, but insisted that
the federal government begins to fulfil its
promises immediately.
The vote is expected to be ratified by the
national executive council of ASUU at a
meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
ASUU executives will then meet with
President Goodluck Jonathan the next day
where the deal will be affirmed and the
strike called off thereafter.
The national body of the union is billed to sit
at a National Executive Council meeting
tomorrow to consider the positions of the
various chapters and take a decision.
Sources within hierarchy of ASUU says
classes will resume on Monday 18th
November.
