Two suspected female drug traffickers identified as Abdulrasaq Modinat Alake and Mbonu Chizoba have been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos in connection with the exportation of 4.450kg of cocaine to India and 7kg of cannabis to China. One of the suspects, Chizoba, is a second time offender as she had been arrested for the same offence in 2013. She has a pending case at the Federal High Court Ikoyi. When interrogated, the married mother of two said “I accept blame for not checking the bag carefully when a client gave it to me. My job is risky because we assist people in clearing cargoes. I feel bad that this is happening to me when the first case is still on”. The second suspect, Alake(45) from Kwara State said her quest to settle her medical bills made her venture into the illicit business “I was married but later separated. I am the only person taking care of myself. My business was booming before I had a health challenge. I used to buy clothes from India and Dubai for supply in Lagos since 2011. My problem started when the doctor said I need to do a surgical operation costing $5,000. Before now, I have spent my money on medical bills in hospitals. That was how I met a man in India during my last visit who promised to pay for my medical expenses. He also told me to take a bag of cocaine to India. It was all about regaining my health but I never knew it will end this way,” she said NDLEA Airport Commander Ahmadu Garba said the suspects will be charged to court soon. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r//OqshX/~3/UcQgDywWhzc/photo-2-suspceted-female-drug.html |

President Muhammadu Buhari has dropped hints that his government would prune the number of ministries in the government bureaucracy because Nigeria is broke. He also hinted that he appointed 36 ministers to fulfil the spirit of the constitution and that some of the ministers may not be assigned portfolios. He said they would however sit at cabinet meetings. He said Nigeria was materially and morally vandalised by the Jonathan administration and at the moment, the country is having great problems paying workers. ‘Where is the money’, the President shot back at his interviewer, as he underlined the great financial crisis that Nigeria is going through. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/10/31/video-nigeria-too-broke-cannot-afford-36-ministers-buhari/ |

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Friday expunged a petition filed against some security agents by Mr Dakuku Peterside, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Rivers in the April 11 elections. In the petition, Peterside had alleged that security agents engaged in some sharp practices during the governorship elections in the state. He is seeking an interlocutory ruling on the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal which had struck out the allegation of sharp practices against the security agents contained in his petition. The APC candidate had indicted some named and unnamed security agents and alleged that Gov. Nyesom Wike used them as thugs to disrupt the rivers election, therefore, disenfranchising thousands of voters. The APC candidate also sought the appellate court to constitute a new panel that would hear his appeal and continue from where the Justice Suleiman Ambursa-led tribunal panel stopped. The presiding appeal court Judge, Justice Datti Yahaya, along with Justice Tanimu Yusuf and Justice Mustapha Mohammed, failed to agree with some sections of the appeal. According to Justice Yahaya, the appellant was supposed to have joined the named and unnamed security agents and the named and unnamed political thugs as respondents from beginning of hearing at the tribunal. Yahaya said that all the criminal allegations contained in the petition against the said security agents and alleged political thugs be expunged as they had no opportunity to defend themselves at the tribunal. The court held that in cases where criminal allegations were made against institutions, agents and individuals, they were expected to be joined as parties to the suit. He, therefore, struck out the appeal before the court. Yahaya also dismissed the application seeking a fresh panel to hear Peterside’s petition after Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Counsel to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), opposed the application. Mr Osima Ginah, Counsel to Gov. Nyesom Wike, also prayed the court to disregard and throw away the application for the re-constitution of a new panel being sought by the appellant. After the judgment, Ginah told journalists that the Court of Appeal’s judgment would help to strengthen Wike’s case when the court commenced hearing in his own appeal. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/10/30/rivers-gov-poll-apc-candidate-loses-appeal/ |
Wife of Nigeria’s President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has commended Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos for donating N150 million to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. The commendation is contained in a statement signed by Buhari’s Special Assistant on Media, Mrs Adebisi Ajayi, on Friday in Abuja. Buhari said the gesture would help to ameliorate the sufferings of IDPs in various camps in the affected states as well as in their rehabilitation, and urged other states and individuals to emulate the governor. She said that insurgency had remained a major challenge in the country but expressed optimism that it would soon be a thing of the past. She appealed to governors of the affected states to take measures at ensuring that children in the IDPs’ camps were properly catered for. “I am grieved as a mother that children can go through such appalling conditions in their country,” Buhari said, noting that malnutrition rate of children in the camps had risen. She explained that children had specialised nutritional needs, and said “the current situation underscores the importance of highly specialised nutritional support for this category of children”. NAN recalls that Ambode had on Oct. 21, presented three cheques of N50 million each to governors of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, respectively, shortly after the Council of State meeting http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/10/30/n150m-aisha-buhari-commends-ambodes-donation-to-idps/ |
Justice Moore Adumen of the Court of Appeal this morning upheld the trial of Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Adumen, reading the unanimous verdict of the three man panel, said the tribunal, which docked the Senate President on 22 September and 21 October was properly constituted. He said the tribunal led by Danladi Umar could sit with the chairman and one other member. He relied on section 28 of the Interpretation Act to reach the decision. He said the CCT and CCB Act and the constitution did not talk about a quorum. Adumen said the judgment could not be delivered on 19 October as earlier planned because the justices have to struggle to reach a consensus. Saraki wanted the appellate court stop his trial at the CCT, where he has been charged on 13-counts with false asset declaration. Judgment was initially fixed for 19 October, but was postponed at the 11th hour, with the court promising to communicate a new date to parties. Notices were sent to parties informing them about today’s date. Arguing the appeal on October 16, Saraki’s lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), urged the appellate court to set aside the entire proceedings before the CCT, including the charge before it. He argued that the CCT was not properly constituted on when it assumed jurisdiction to entertain the charges because it was made up of two members as against three, which is provided for in Paragraph 15(1) of the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution. Daudu contended that the provision of Section 28 of the Interpretation Act relied upon by the respondents to argue that the tribunal could validly sit with its Chairman and one other member, was a contradiction of the three-member provision in the Constitution. He also argued that the tribunal not being a superior court recognised by the Constitution could not exercise criminal jurisdiction. http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/10/30/appeal-court-gives-cct-go-ahead-to-try-saraki-for-corruption/ |

Vanguard News Search FG seeks warrant for Senate President Bukola Saraki’s arrest You are here : Home » News » Breaking News: FG seeks warrant to arrest Saraki September 18, 2015 at 11:52 am in News FacebookTwitterSMSWhatsApp By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA – The Federal Ministry of Justice has asked the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja to issue bench warrant for the arrest of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki. Bukola Saraki Bukola Saraki A deputy director in the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. M.S. Hassan, applied for the arrest order following Saraki’s refusal to appear before the tribunal to enter his plea to the13- count corruption charge against him. Saraki who was billed for arraignment this morning, sent his team of lawyers to serve the tribunal with a copy of the ruling of Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, which summoned the Ministry of Justice to appear on Monday to show cause why the trial should be allowed to proceed. Equally summoned by the court were the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar and that of the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, Mr. Sam Saba, as well as Mr. Hassan who signed the charge against Saraki. Meanwhile, irked by Saraki’s absence at the tribunal for the commencement of his prosecution over alleged false declaration of assets, the Ministry of Justice prayed the Justice Umar-led panel to order for his arrest, saying “he cannot sit in the comfort of his chamber and object to his trial in absentia”. The prosecution further maintained that Justice Mohammed lacked the powers to summon the CCT and CCB chairmen, even as it accused Saraki of engaging in “forum shopping” in a desperate bid to scuttle his trial. |
SIX persons, including a Bureau de Change (BDC) operator, have been arrested for allegedly trying to swallow $156,000 in a money laundering bid. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Joint Task Force (JTF) smashed the money laundering syndicate at a hotel on Airport Road, Ikeja, Lagos. This is the second suspected money laundering case involving a BDC operator in two months. The suspects are: Kingsley Nwokenta, the BDC operator, who is also known as Buchito, Augustine Onwuasoanya and Christian Ifor, who are based in Brazil. Others are Emmanuel Nwokenta, Ikenna Ezenwa, and Uzoma Ezenwa, the hotel manager. NDLEA JTF Commander Muyiwa Adeniyi described the BDC operator as the brain behind the criminal act. He (Nwokenta) allegedly supplied $120,000 to be swallowed and exported to Brazil. Onwuasoanya swallowed 74 wraps of dollar bills amounting to $111,000; Ifor wanted to swallow $45,000. Nwokenta, manager of Amazon Bureau de Change, played a supportive role in the alleged crime, it was alleged. Ezenwa was hired to wrap the money. NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Ahmadu Giade promised to track down smuggled narcotics and currency. He warned that BDC operators who fail to work within the law establishing them would be sanctioned. “The agency will continue to rely on manpower training to outwit criminal syndicates. We shall take reasonable measures to dislodge drug cartels and eradicate narcotics from our society. Any bureau de change operator that violates the law shall be punished accordingly,” Giade said. Giade directed that the suspects be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). |
