Laboratory science is wide field where almost any scientific research could be done. There's almost no limit to what a laboratory scientist could research on.

On the other hand, medical science is just a small field that you can actually specialize on.

If that's not the case explain to me how that's not the case. That's all you need do.

Not totally true....You just made me remember a case whereby a doctor requested a test to be carried out on a patient and the clinical summary as presented on the Request form/ the parasitic organism suspected by him was "Shistosoma Hematobium" and the sample that was sent to the lab was a Stool sample(which was even wrong in the first place, if he knew what he was doing it's a Urine sample that ought to have been sent). But after carrying out the test the parasite that was found to be present in the patient's stool sample was "Entamoeba Histolytica"....If the test had not been carried out, the patient would have been misdiagnosed and given the wrong treatment and this could have led to the death of that patient.....

There has been cases where a doctor would query a particular parasite but after test the scientist will see up to 2 more..

Big lie my brother. Every doctor knows the spectrum of drugs to use for UTI, or pneumonia or cellulitis. Only a quack will have his patient return back in 72hrs to be treated for an infectious dxs, maybe d patient would be dead or complicated by then. There are even drugs that though are microbiologically correct, are medically incorrect, eg you see a pregnant woman with pyelonephritis sensitive to Erythromycin +++, and Ofloxacin ++ . It will be stupid using erythromycin, because while it is microbiologically correct, medically it is wrong. I rest my case because I am not a lab scientist and can't argue anotherans field.

Well, we didn't have personal contact with the patient to know she's pregnant. All we have is a blood sample, should we do pregnancy test along with sensitivity.. That's ur woke..

For example I say suggested a drug that may lyse RBC as a med micro, an haematologist reported low PCV for the same patient. It's left for you to choose an effective drug that won't decrease PCV and u may even want to investigate the cos of the low PCV and see if it has any relationship with the patient's infection.. .

nice decision, most schools hardly take MLT for DE because admission is given by the University and JAMB and not the department, any MLT who really wants to advance career wise should be planning on going for BMLS. Same way most RN are now coming back for BNSC

If you have the money I will link you to a private school that will. Admit you through DE but you have to obtain jamb DE form..

MLT as DE is recognized my the MLSCN and more acceptable than OND SLT

I have read ur post again and again and I don't believe d first half because I am educated and know what should be. Any doctor who needed the lab to make diagnosis or to treat should be sanctioned or have defective education. These services complement the doctor. In fact MLS, radiology and pharmacy where made to aid the doctors work, the central person in d hospital is a doctor. Patients don't go to hospital and say, "I want to see my lab scientist or radiographer or pharmacist", they always go to the hospital because they want to see a doctor. A well trained doctor should be able to arrive at a diagnosis, and use laboratory/radiologic tests to confirm that diagnosis. When a doctor sees for example pneumonia or genital discharge, he shouldn't wait for MCS to begin antibiotics, he ask for MCS to confirm that d antibiotics d patient is on is sensitive, in fact if the patient is recovering on the prescriptions the doctor doesn't change the medications even if the sensitivity says otherwise. Any doctor who cannot treat common medical ailments effectively when there is no laboratory should be shown the way out.

A doctor is only guessing without confirmation/adequate from lab, radiologist e.t.c.
There are many disease with almost the same symptoms but the method of treatment is significantly diff.
A physical examination gives information but is not adequate but will give directions..

I am a graduate of both.Studied SLT ( microbiology) and MLS ( histopathology and cytology)The major difference is the curriculum, in SLT,we carryout studies on insects, plant anatomy and physiology and to some extent soil characteristics.while in MLS, its human anatomy and physiology majorly.The other techniques are very similar, I can tell you, over 95% of the techniques are the same, just a little adjustment.But let me say this, all techniques have guiding principles which are the same for both studies.
SLT graduates are trained for INDUSTRIAL LABORATORIES, ENVIRONMENTAL LABORATORIES AND SOME TEACHING AND RESEARCH LABORATORIES as the case maybe.
MLS graduates are trained for CLINICAL/MEDICAL LABORATORIES, RESEARCH LABORATORIES AND TEACHING LABORATORIES.
SLT graduates who is still interested in MLS can still do so by going through ACCREDITED UNIVERSITIES
STL graduates can NEVER be EQUATED with MLS.Reasons (SLT graduates do not know the guiding principles of running those tests,they may not know when the test is correct or not( FALSE POSITIVE/ FALSE NEGATIVE RESULT)
STL graduates practicing MLS are QUACKS.They are killing innocent people by giving out wrong diagnosis which is what the doctors use to treat patience.
However, the authorities of our institution should include these in their curriculum so that our SLT graduates will know where to seek for employment. GOD BLESS US ALL.

Have been following this thread for a while now and it seems people don't understand that there's a big difference training curriculum of SLT and MLS.
1. A Med. Lab. Scientist would have gone though necessarily Human Anatomy as well as Physiology (200l) in which SLT wouldn't go through (chemistry, Environmental Biology, Physics, Biochemistry or industrial chemistry). Even BSc Biochemistry or Micro don't offer those courses.
2. A Med. Lab. Scienctist would have started handling Human samples of all the MLS disciplines at 300l (Histology, Med. Micro, Chemical Pathology and Haematology) which is aided by medical laboratory posting in a teaching hospital . Be mindful that this disciplines include advance Physiology, Anatomy, Microbiology, biochemistry, cell biology and at some extent molecular biology. SLT doesn't do this.
3. After 300l and 400l, the students are mandates to write a professional examination in all these deciplines will be monitored my Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (if you fail you repeat) . SLT doesn't do this neither do any basic medical science
4. At 500l there will there will be specialisation and training at the teaching hospital and other lectures at school
5. After graduation, theres a compulsory 1year internship which is another year of training in fact if you don't do well in ur internship you will be asked to repeat WITHOUT PAY. ONLY MLS AND MBBS does this (Nursing are just starting). SLT doesn't do this..

A student who did this successfully becomes a licensed Med lab scientist..

Hence it is wrong for someone who didn't undergo trainings like this to handle HUMAN SAMPLE which will be used for TREATMENT.

We all know that if Nigeria should split the Igbos will. Survive and within 10years they will be compared with countries like UAE, Yorubas too will make it through although it may have some years because we've long stopped investing in Agriculture and although we have oil but it will still take some years. Left with the Hausas, with their population which may likely double within 15years although they have agricultural products but the country will only plant to feed themselves having only little or no savings.
All this projects just a question; why Hausas are wants to split up. And here are the answers.
1. The Igbos in the Northern part of Nigeria have been there for an average of 12years which resulted in most of them having immobile structures there which when combined is worth billions. The Hausas wants all those properties for themselves forgetting rich Northerners have structures the Igbos will claim (like oil grid owned by Hausas and Dangote's properties)
2. It is of no surprise that this country over the past 1 year have embarked in anti-corruption project leading to Billions of dollars (no one knows how much exactly), the Hausas plans to go away with this money has Nigeria breaks, with this money they can survive for years.
WAY FORWARD
The Igbos and Yorubas should keep in mind and start asking for the actual amount now so that it will be spoiled equally when we go our different ways.
