EducationFUNAI Don’s Book Ranks One Of The Best Sellers In African History by cyborgFUNAI(op): 8:25pm On Nov 13, 2017
FUNAI Don’s Book Ranks One of the Best Sellers in African History
A book written by an academic staff of the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Dr. Arua Oko Omaka has been listed by the Library Journal Review as one of the twenty best sellers in African history.
In a release by the world-acclaimed journal on April 27, 2017, it noted that the book was a clear outstanding contribution to knowledge and understanding on a topic of ongoing importance.
The literary work, “The Biafran Humanitarian Crisis, 1967 – 1970: International Human Rights and Joint Church Aid” published by the Fairleigh Dickinson University Press has continued to elicit warm reception within the global academic community since it hit the book shelves.

In a congratulatory letter dated May 11, 2017 from the Director of Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, Harry Keyishian, the publisher extolled Dr. Omaka for the warm reception his book has received among global scholars.
Meanwhile some notable global scholars have hailed the impact of the book on the world of knowledge. John Weaver, a Member of the Royal Society of Canada and distinguished Professor of History at McMaster University noted that Dr. Omaka has broken new ground with his blending of archival sources in several countries and his interviews, adding that the scholarship was admirable and the narrative compelling.
Buttressing the importance of the book on African history, Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, a professor of History and Global Human Rights at McMaster University said: “The book marks an important contribution to modern African history and the broader scholarship on armed conflicts and international humanitarianism.”
Also, commenting on the book, Dr. Raphael Chijioke Njoku, a professor of African History at Idaho State University, wrote, “The book is a powerful contribution to the historical scholarship on culture and global humanitarian intervention in a political conflict”, stressing that Dr. Omaka showed his intellectual depth and social vision in treating such a sensitive subject with fairness and wisdom.
This rare academic feat by a FUNAI scholar is a welcome development taking into cognizance the struggle by many Nigerian Universities and scholars for global recognition and acceptance.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba, therefore expresses his gratitude to the emerging international scholar, Dr. Omaka, for putting the name of the University on the world map through his world-acclaimed scholarly work while also challenging other academics to increase the tempo and quality of their research output in order to win international recognition

--One Page Summary--
The Friedman School of Nutrition at Tufts University and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine are pleased to announce the fourth and last round of Post-doctoral Fellowships for emerging leaders in agriculture, nutrition, and health research, funded with UK aid from the UK government through the Department for International Development (DFID) through their programme on Innovative Methods and Metrics for Agriculture and Nutrition Actions (IMMANA). For 2018-19, IMMANA will award five 12-month Post-doctoral Fellowships to early career researchers who are using and developing or adapting these new methodological approaches with Mentors in ongoing research programmes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Eligible candidates will have completed a doctoral degree (PhD, DPhil, DPH, MD, DVM or similar terminal degree) in any field related to agriculture, nutrition or health research and practice, and are seeking a career in research, education, and engagement at the intersection of two or more of these fields. Eligible candidates should have no more than three years of post-PhD experience prior to their proposed Fellowship start date. IMMANA Fellowships will aim for equal representation of women and men, and we particularly welcome applications from citizens of LMIC countries.

Applicants must propose to conduct fieldwork or other research under the joint supervision of two Mentors, one from the applicant’s current or previous employer or academic institution, and one from a host institution where the applicant proposes to advance their work. At least one of the two Mentors must be physically located in Africa or Asia. The two Mentors need not have equal roles in the project, but having both involved should help accelerate research and sharing of ideas between the Fellow’s home and host environments. Selection will give preference to applicants who have research or faculty appointments in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, but applicants may be of any nationality and have earned their doctorate anywhere.

Applications are submitted in a two-stage process. Applicants are welcome and encouraged to submit a concept note to confirm eligibility and receive valuable feedback. Applicants must submit a full proposal by 1 March 2018 and selected candidates will be notified no later than 1 May 2018. IMMANA Fellows must then begin their 12-month projects between the dates of 1 June and 31 December 2018. Both forms are available online at http://immanafellowships. submittable.com. The Vice Chancellor who was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Elom, urged the lecturers to: “Take the opportunity seriously considering the importance of PowerPoint presentation in the teaching profession in this 21st century”, noting that the problem with the Nigerian education sector was mostly lack of proper management and capacity.
He further stated that attendance to the training was compulsory, adding that it would also form one of the criteria for the payment of staff salary.

The training was one of the numerous avenues the University is adopting to make its academic staff ICT-savvy in order to meet the demands of 21stt century teaching and learning experience, all geared towards churning out graduates that possess the relevant functional knowledge and sellable skills to compete favourably in a globalized economy.

EducationTetfund Visits Funai, Sensitizes Staff by cyborgFUNAI(op): 5:48pm On Oct 27, 2017
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) yesterday visited the Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State to sensitive staff of the institution on the modalities for accessing fund to improve their academic and experiential capacities.
Receiving the team from Abuja, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba noted that the University was among the twelve Federal Universities established in 2011, stressing that TETFund has been handy in helping the University meet some of its infrastructural demands.

The Vice Chancellor who was represented in the event by his deputy, Prof. Sunday Elom expressed his delight for the sensitization visit, appealing to the Fund to intervene in bridging the infrastructural gap in the institution occasioned by the economic crunch that has grounded infrastructural and human development to a near halt in most public Universities.
In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Dr. Abdullahi Baffa, who was represented in the event by Mrs. Briggs Nguoba, outlined the notable challenges facing organizations in their quest to access funds promptly and cautioned end users (universities and staff) to diligently follow the guidelines to avoid delays and outright refusal.

Outlining some of the numerous challenges, he stressed that lack of proper scope and requirements for TETFund; lack of strategic and operational plans; non-conformity to guiding rules; insufficient documentation; faulty observance of due process in the engagement of contractors; use of non-professionals as desk officers among others constitute major impediments.
Engineer Tunde Olakunrin while also speaking, declared that the era of bogus spending, unretired account and absence of evaluation and monitoring was over; maintaining that before the second and final tranches of fund could be released to universities, there must be thorough inspection to ascertain their degree of compliance to previous releases.
Optimist Yohanah, in his presentation on the guidelines and modalities for accessing academic staff training and development (AST & D) and conferences stated that TETFUND sponsorship in that category was strictly for M. Sc and Ph.D scholars that applied to study in top ranking Nigerian and world Universities that are captured in the World University Ranking of Higher Education.
He warned that applications to online campuses and unapproved degree awarding institutions by the National Universities Commission (NUC) are not honoured.
He further highlighted that a staff is due for conference once confirmed, insisting that such conference registration fee should not exceed one hundred thousand naira only and five days duration, adding that a candidate was expected to apply three (3) times a year because of traffic congestion of submitted application forms to avoid their applications to be overtaken by time.
He further stated that 3o% of the fund are meant for conferences while 70% are earmarked for academic purposes.
Angelo Abraham while presenting an overview on guidelines and modalities for accessing content-based intervention, opined that Universities have access to library development intervention, institution-based research, academic research journal intervention, academic manuscript to books intervention, national research fund (special intervention), and ICT support.
He maintained that opportunities abound to state and federal Universities to access these TETFUND interventions, urging FUNAI to key into it.
In her closing remarks, the Registrar of the university, Mrs. Odisa Okeke thanked the TETFund team for their sensitization, urging them to repeat the visit for proper integration

EducationThis Generation Of Staff Has Been Called To Build - Funai Vc by cyborgFUNAI(op): 7:18pm On Oct 18, 2017
The Vice Chancellor of Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba said the present generation of staff of the institution has been called to build.
The Vice Chancellor made this known during an interdenominational church service organized recently to mark the commencement of the 2017/2018 academic session at the University auditorium.
“Please, let us carry the cross of this University; the cross of sacrifice. The cross of defining a new culture for the University – where people will be found worthy in character and in learning
“If we continue in our present path, this University will be a place everyone will be proud of in the nearest future”, he stated.

Going down memory lane, Nwajiuba noted that modern University was a creation of Christianity, adding that it was therefore important to always recognize the place of God in a University. He however, opined that this recognition is a matter of choice as University is composed of people with diverse beliefs and therefore urged staff of the institution to be above board in the performance of their official responsibilities especially in their relationship with students.
“God is actually a scientist. If you look at the biblical account of the encounter between Elijah and the prophets of Baal, you will see that it met all the requirements of a proper scientific investigation…”
He continued: “Take a good look at the families of those who welcomed Christian missionaries in those days and those of former teachers who did their work without blemishes and you will see some light, no matter their challenges.”

The Vice Chancellor also used the occasion to express his gratitude to staff for their dedication to duty despite the shortfall in their salaries, adding that their money would surely be paid to them.
“I thank you for your sacrifices and urge you to continue making more sacrifices for the good of our University.”
He maintained that despite the less than wonderful circumstances, the University has continued to excel in various areas and stressed that the prompt graduation of students and forwarding of their names to NYSC for mobilization, improved quality of the students and their ability to access their results and certificates without hassles as some of the achievements of the University in the last academic year.
He equally commended the FUNAI Parents’ Forum for their various support geared towards developing the University.
The highpoint of the event was a prayer session for the continuous growth and development of the University and protection of its staff. It was led by the Superintendent of Assemblies of God Church, Ikwo District, Rev. Dr. Simon Igwe.

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi state, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba has appealed to the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education and Services to facilitate the prompt release of budgetary allocations to the University to enable it implement its capital projects and ensure the smooth running of the institution.
Nwajiuba made the appeal recently while addressing members of the Committee, led by their chairman, Hon. Aminu Suleiman, who were in the University as part of their oversight functions. He pointed out that there was a huge gap between the actual release and budgeted figure, adding that it has hindered the University from functioning at an optimal level.

According to him, “the University staff since February of this year have been receiving 80% of their salaries due to shortfall in personnel cost”, and pleaded with the committee to intervene in the matter.
He also noted that the University has not received constant public power supply from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, stressing that in the month of June 2017 it only had 7 hours of public power, which makes the University to run virtually on diesel with its high attendant cost.

In his response, Suleiman pledged to interface with the executive to ensure prompt and adequate budgetary release for the University to mitigate the impact of shortfall on the system. He maintained that their visit was part of their constitutional mandate geared towards acquainting themselves with happenings in Federal institutions in the country, especially as it concerns budget implementation.
Other members of the Committee who were at the University for the visit include; Mu’azu Lawal, Princess Stella Ngwu, Sam Onyigbo, Aminu Malle and Ben Nwankwo.
