FUNAI to Hold Research Exhibition; as Abakaliki Rice, Yam become Official University Food The Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State is to hold a research exhibition where all concluded and preliminary findings of ongoing research works of staff and students would be showcased to the public. This was made known by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba during the 5th FUNAI Lecture held recently in the University. The University is also to participate in the National Research Expo scheduled for Abuja in March 2018. Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor directed the Director of Research and Development in the University, Professor Onuegbu O. Ugwu, to inform and galvanize all academic staff to be part of these exhibitions. VC, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba espousing the importance of innovation, research and development in Nigeria development According to the Vice-Chancellor, the essence of the exhibition is to make research innovative and production-driven in the institution, not just a mere academic exercise used to gain promotion. He further decried the poor research attitude of many Nigerian academics, who he noted were mainly interested in money and enjoined them to take research seriously in order make the country productive and self-reliant. Meanwhile, Abakaliki rice and yam have been declared the official food of the University. This was also part of the decisions made by the Vice Chancellor at the 5th FUNAI lecture. Bags of Abakaliki rice on display Consequently, he has directed that all food to be cooked and sold in the University during such events like matriculations, convocations and the likes be strictly local products from Abakaliki, the host town of the University. This policy is to come into effect starting from the 6th matriculation ceremony of the university scheduled for 8th February, 2018. The Deans of various faculties, Acting Director of FUNAI Outlook and campus food vendors were ordered to abide by the decision in all their entertainment and cafeteria activities. Similarly, the Vice-Chancellor has also approved the production of ‘akwete’ in the University. ‘Akwete’ is a local fabric indigenous to the Igbo people of south eastern Nigeria. The establishment of the ‘akwete’ fabric industry in the University would expose its students to entrepreneurial activities in that line of business; create opportunities for both job and additional income for members of the university community as well as drive the local economy to prosperity. On that note the Vice-chancellor equally directed the department of Fine and Applied Arts to ensure the venture takes-off immediately. A women weaving akwete fabric (pix courtesy of Google images) These three executive orders from the Vice-chancellor are in direct support of the federal government policies on economic diversification, ease of doing business and local content policy. Its positive spillover effect on the University staff and students, its host community and Ebonyi state in general are enormous and unquantifiable. It will definitely boost the local economy and more importantly promote the clamour for made-in Nigeria goods in this part of the country. Therefore, all hands must be on deck to ensure that these objectives are pursued and achieved, making FUNAI a trail blazer among the comity of Nigerian Universities in the promotion of economic diversification and local policies of government.

I have received a number of messages from across the country; Igbo and non-Igbo. Something consistent in their comments is Alex Ekwueme as a man of honour. One of such came from Professor Emmanuel Oladipo of UNILAG, who asked: “How do you feel to have your university named after such a man of honour?” Another Professor wrote: “We should look at the pedigree of the man. His iconic status in the Igbo nation and Nigeria, and the respect the name would attract to the university. To equate Dr. Ekwueme to Abiola in the case of UNILAG is to miss the point.” Many enlightened minds also agree that Alex Ekwueme was an excellent man. He had at least seven degrees from a diversity of disciplines including Architecture, Law, and Sociology. Of everyone who has had a university named after in Nigeria, he was the most educated, and perhaps most deserving. Obviously well-bred and well educated, he was Senior Prefect at the Kings College Lagos. He was at a time Chancellor of the Ebonyi state university. He was an early entrepreneur establishing perhaps the first firm of Architects in Nigeria, in the late 1950s. He went on to establish hotel businesses in Enugu, Owerri, and Abakaliki among others. The timing and locations of his hotel may tell something about his Igboness. He built the school that became the Federal Polytechnic Oko, and for decades was responsible for the education of so many persons in and outside Nigeria. He was the leader of the Igbo to the 1995 Abacha constitutional conference. He gave voice to the Igbo position at that conference two of which are worthy of mention. The first is a President with two Vice-Presidents, one of whom must be from the President’s home zone, so that in case the president is unable to function, the Vice-President from his/her zone will take over. How do you see that in the light of what happened to President Yaradua, and the ill feelings in some places about the emergence of President Jonathan? The second which has become accepted in Nigeria is the six zone structure. This has subsisted despite not making it into the 1999 constitution, and some sections being suspicious of that, and would want to wish that away. This is one of the things held against Alex Ekwueme in certain quarters. In protocol he is the most successful Igbo politician post-1970. He was the first elected Vice-President of Nigeria. Through all the trials of politicians that followed after the 1983, he was like a star, as he was cleared of any corrupt practice. Certainly this is rare, and we should be proud of this, and be glad to be associated with Alex Ekwueme. He was a courageous man. He was chairman of the G-34 that told Abacha not to become a civilian president. This may seem easy to persons who have forgotten what 1998 was like. The G-34 was the major plank of the PDP. His sacrifice at the Jos convention that produced Chief Olusegun Obasanjo contrary to the position of the PDP that one needed to come from a ward won by the PDP in the preceding elections to be so nominated cannot be forgotten in a hurry.. I had the privilege of visiting and hearing from him in 2001 what transpired in Jos and why he let the sleeping dog lie. The concession to him was for him to be Senate President which he declined and asked that it should be zoned to the southeast. That zoning led to the subsequent emergence of Enwerem (Imo), Okadigbo (Anambra), Anyim (Ebonyi), Wabara (Abia), and Nnamani (Enugu) as Senate Presidents, a position not initially zoned to the south east. It may be important to state this for those who need to be shown something at this level which he achieved for the southeast. Do we really need to ask any Igbo who can and read and write, and who is able to follow and interpret the trend of events in Nigeria, that it really will be a sad commentary to interpret this event? One reason many non-Igbo do not take the Igbo serious is that many Igbo do not understand who loves them, and what is important and when. In my university FUNAI, we love the acronym and the sound. We truly love FUNAI and the sound of the name. We also love our anthem, and at least two other songs about FUNAI. Unlike other Federal Universities named after persons, ours is the only one with the word Federal retained, as announced by the Vice-President today at Oko. ABU, OAU, NAU, MAUTECH, are all Federal but do not have that in their name. We still have our beloved FUNAI, with AE added in front. Our anthem and all our songs remain as we sing them with AE-FUNAI. But all this is beyond such level of commentary. Our university has as name a man and a legacy we truly can be proud of, and I dare say, well ahead any other. We should please be at peace with this, and if we truly understand, be excited. Some may ask why not rename the Polytechnic at Oko. That is for those unfamiliar with protocols and rankings in governance. Some may ask why not upgrade Oko to a university. Government is reluctant to have two federal universities in a state. The twelve new universities with such simple names as Federal university…, are bound to be renamed at some time. If not Alex Ekwueme in the southeast, who is more accomplished? FUNAI is already ahead of the other eleven in many ways. What has happened further puts us ahead in public consciousness and I also expect some tangibles. To God b the glory Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba FASN Vice Chancellor

The National Office for Technological Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) is to equip the Chemical Engineering laboratory at the Federal University Ndufu-Alike IKwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State. This hint was dropped by the Director General of the Agency; Dr. Dan Azumi Mohammed Ibrahim yesterday when he presented a lecture entitled “Research beyond Publications” at the University. He noted that NOTAP in conjunction with a multi-national company, PZ before the end of the 1st quarter of 2018 will furnish the Chemical Engineering laboratory of the University with important scientific and technological equipment worth N30 million. He also assured the University that the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu would be on hand to commission the laboratory when completed; adding that three of such laboratories have been built by the agency in different parts of the Country. Delivering his lecture, the NOTAP’s helmsman advised academics to see research as a means of helping the Nigerian system to grow and develop not just as a mere academic exercise meant to attain promotion in a work place. He further stated that the quantum of academic publications do not translate to national development unless they are converted to technologies and products. Hear him: “Do not rush to publish. Advanced nations are way ahead of Nigeria due to research and innovation, and intellectual property of their Citizens, not their natural resources. That is the way to go if Nigeria must be developed.” He maintained that the world has moved from natural resource-based economy to knowledge-based economy, urging Universities and other tertiary institutions to drive this change by providing solutions to the numerous challenges facing Nigeria through their research works. Worrisomely, he also noted, that more than 90% of technologies powering Nigeria comes from abroad, adding that 6 out of 10 were software. He also reiterated the fact that the funding system of the Nigerian educational system is weak as virtually all institutions rely solely on government funds for their activities unlike what is obtainable in the advanced world where universities depend on patents and endowment to raise funds and advised academics to begin to think-out-of-the box in order to improve the system. In order to arrest the problem of research funding in Nigeria, Ibrahim stated that the federal government through the Ministry of Science and Technology is initiating the National Research and Innovation Fund, adding that an Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office is being established in Universities to train academics to see research as a means of providing solutions to burning national issues. On that note he promised to send two of his staff to train the academic staff of the University on the procedures for registering patent in Nigeria. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba thanked NOTAP and the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Onu in particular for choosing FUNAI as one of the institutions where scientific laboratories are being equipped by the federal government and its partners. He also charged the academic staff of the University to take research seriously, noting that the only way to improve Nigeria was through production-driven research. He maintained that the University would ensure that the findings and recommendations of all research works carried out in the institution were made available to strategic stakeholders that could benefit from it. He also used the opportunity that solicit the intervention of the University Management in providing more job and admission opportunities for the indigenes of their community even as he also appealed to the University to support their efforts in getting compensation from the Ebonyi State government for the land they donated for the establishment of the institution in 2011. Other speakers including Chief Igwe, Apostle Emma Mbam and Hon. Dave Onuoha also commended the Vice Chancellor for his forthrightness and peaceful disposition in dealing with members of the host community especially those who are still living within the University premises and advised him to engage their people in more regular discussions to avoid mutual suspicion. Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nwajiuba assured them of the University’s support in dealing with some of their challenges, adding that he has decided not to force any occupant out of the University premises but to work-out peaceful means of resolving the problems. “We insist on having a good relationship with our host community. We will never quarrel with you”, the Vice Chancellor stated. He also maintained that it was not the duty of the University to pay land compensation but that of the State government who surveyed and handed over the land to the federal government for the establishment of the University, and advised the occupants of the university land to leave now as infrastructural development is already sweeping across the campus. On the issues of employment and admission opportunities the Vice Chancellor noted that the University has done well, as many sons and daughters of the community have been employed to work or admitted to study in the University and promised to do more taking into cognizance of the government policies governing both matters. The Vice Chancellor further noted that his dream was to make the University the most green-campus in Nigeria and called on the members of the University community to plant trees and flowers to make the vision a reality. In his speech, the Chief Executive Officer of the Samuel Omogo Foundation, Rev. Fr. Peter Omogo noted that the donation of a borehole to the University was spurred by the challenges he faced as a child, when he had to trek for a very long distance to be able to access water for the family. He stressed that the goal of the Foundation was to leave a legacy by making a difference in the lives of people and communities, adding that life without legacy is worthless. He further noted that through the collaboration the Foundation has with some Rotary clubs in Nigeria and United States of America, they have been able to build 190 boreholes in Ebonyi State, maintaining that the most important of all human needs is water. The reverend gentleman therefore used the opportunity to challenge the staff and students to work together, utilize their potential, skills and resources to make positive impact on their immediate environment and beyond. Earlier, the Coordinator of the Vice Chancellor’s Office, Bar. Grace Eze-Ali who attracted the project to the University thanked the donor for his kind-heartedness and selfless service to humanity through the execution of life-touching projects in different parts of Ebonyi State She maintained that the borehole would help in preventing the outbreak of water-borne diseases such as cholera in the University. There were musical and dance performances by some students of the University to spice-up the event.

• As John Nnia Nwodo delivers 2nd Convocation Lecture • Governing Council honours past VC, others The Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State, has turned-out 22 first class graduates at its 2nd convocation ceremony held yesterday at the convocation arena. Speaking at the epoch-making event, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Chinedum Uzoma Nwajiuba noted that 247 graduates were turned-out at this year’s convocation ceremony; out of which 22 graduated with first class honours degrees in different disciplines. Hear him “The graduands being celebrated today are 247…Of these 247 graduands, 22 emerged in first class, 140 in the second class upper, 80 in the second class lower, and 5 in the third class.” He attributed the good performance to a number of factors which included excellent and world-class staff – student ratios, staff commitment, willingness of students to learn, dearth of common vices plaguing other older universities, good laboratories and workshops, among others. Admonishing the graduands, the Vice Chancellor said: “May I remind you that sowing and reaping have not ended with your graduation, You have merely moved to higher levels of sowing and reaping. What eventually becomes of you will depend not only on the quality of your harvest so far, which have become seeds for the future- and that is the degree you are being admitted into today – but what choices you make in the years ahead; for every choice we make will bear consequences.” Nwajiuba also used the opportunity to express his gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for the Federal government’s ecological intervention in the University. He further thanked the Ebonyi State Government for their warm relationship with the university, and called on investors and good-spirited individuals to contribute to the development of the University, In his own speech, the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council, Professor Mba Uzoukwu, reiterated the commitment of the Council to ensuring that the institution sticks to the principles of excellence and integrity, vowing to promote the culture of selfless service, transparency, accountability and meritocracy in running the affairs of the University. He also stressed their support to Senate and Management of the institution in order to produce highly knowledgeable, responsible and enterprising graduates. The Chancellor, His Royal Majesty, Oba Michael Aremu Adedotun Gbadebo, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland while addressing the Convocation charged the University authorities to remain committed to the vision of building a world-class institution that would be reputed for its vibrant teaching and learning activities. He stressed that the level of Nigeria’s economic growth and development depends to a large extent on the quality and quantity of functional knowledge and sellable skills at the disposal of the citizens as well as the quality of research output from Universities. The Visitor of the University and the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari while addressing the Convocation reiterated the commitment of his government towards funding education even as he challenged universities to embark on productive research and international collaborations in order to enunciate innovative ideas and solutions to problems facing the nation. The President who was represented by the Director of Management Support Services in the National Universities Commission, Bar. Victor Onuoha also used the opportunity to reiterate his commitment towards ensuring a better deal for all Nigerians, adding that the policies of his government have started making positive impact on the economy. The President further noted that the fight against corruption in public offices and war against book haram and other security challenges shall be sustained to ensure the country is safe for living and investment. Meanwhile, the President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo was the guest lecturer at the 2nd convocation lecture of the university which was chaired by the wife of the first President of Nigeria, Professor Uche Azikiwe. Speaking on the topic: “National Reconciliation and The Role of Universities”, Nwodo noted that universities were supposed to be places for research, growth of ideas, and solution-oriented contribution for advancement of mankind, but decried the lack of funding, poor management and intellectual dishonesty that are deterring most Nigerian Universities from fulfilling those roles. Cases of lecturers compromising their objectivity in marking of scripts by awarding marks to students for money have dented confidentiality and reliability in the rating of students in examinations”, he lamented. He further called on government to maintain the autonomy of Universities if they were to achieve the purpose of their establishment. He maintained that universities in Nigeria by the laws that govern them were expected to enjoy considerable internal autonomy in their administration but regretted that government’s appointment of University Governing Councils mostly on political patronage has remotely diluted their autonomy. Earlier in her opening remarks, the Chair of the occasion, Professor Azikiwe reiterated her belief in one Nigeria, urging all those calling for Nigeria’s dismemberment to retrace their footsteps and seek other peaceful means for making their grievances known to government. She further stressed the importance of fairness for all Nigerians irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political linings, calling on the government to listen to all grievances and tackle all forms of marginalization against some aggrieved ethnic nationalities in order to promote national reconciliation. The University Governing Council also used the period of the Convocation ceremony to honour its former Pro-chancellor/Chairman, Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu, former Vice Chancellor and Registrar, Professor Oye Ibidapo-Obe and Mr. Gabriel O. Chukwu, and a former member of the Council, Mrs. Rose Gold-Idehen, for their meritorious service to the University.

Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State has signed a memorandum of understanding with Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), South Africa, to partner in the area of collaborative research. This was made known recently by the Vice-Chancellors of the two Universities - Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba and Professor Marcus Ramogale after putting pen to paper in South Africa, to signal the commencement of the partnership. Represented by the Director of Research and Development, Prof Onuegbu O. Ugwu, the Vice Chancellor of FUNAI during a 10-day research visit to South Africa which was funded by the National Research Foundation, South Africa, noted that both institutions have agreed to collaborate in providing solutions to systemic problems bedeviling the African continent through bi-directional knowledge exchange. During the visit Prof. Ugwu also participated in a 2-day postgraduate workshop in the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) where he delivered a keynote address on ‘Students’ (Postgraduate) Scholarship as Component of the University Research Ecosystem’, and stressed that his postgraduate supervising experiences across Europe, Asia and Africa revealed that students have inert potential to become purveyors of knowledge creation and distribution in a university research ecosystem, with the capacity to transform the African continent. Meanwhile, Prof Ugwu also had presentations with the Faculty of Engineering, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) and Durban University of Technology (DUT). Speaking on ‘Robust African Universities Research, Development & Innovation (RDI), Ecosystems: a Sin-Qua-Non to Change the Continent’s Growth Narratives in the 21st Century’, he emphasized that university-driven research, development and Innovation (RDI) is the only factor that spurned China’s phenomenal growth and socio-economic transformation and catapulted it into mainstream global political architecture, adding that such could be replicated in African Universities if given an environmental-friendly atmosphere. He further stated that university-driven research, development and innovation (RDI) initiatives could pull the continent from the abyss of perennial underdevelopment, stressing that sustainable infrastructure was a prerequisite to attaining UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa.
