BREAKING NEWS: Rodgers unveiled as new Liverpool manager The Northern Irishman replaces the sacked club legend Kenny Dalglish, admitting that the lure of "one of the dynasties of the game" was too appealing to ignore. Brendan Rodgers has been unveiled as the new Liverpool manager. The former Swansea City man replaces Kenny Dalglish, who was sacked after a disappointing eight-place finish in the Premier League, despite reaching the FA Cup and League Cup finals, winning the latter. Rodgers comes to Anfield with only four years of managerial experience, after, in addition to the Welsh side, stints at Watford and Reading. The 39-year-old received much praise and adulation for adopting a possession-based passing game in Swansea’s debut season in the top flight, seeing it reap rewards with a highly-respectable 11th-place finish. The newly-appointed manager admitted that he could not ignore the lure of managing Liverpool, despite initially planning to stay at the Liberty Stadium for “a number of years” He told the Liverpool Echo: “For me, the only way I was going to leave Swansea was for a big club, and I mean a big club,” Rodgers said. “It was an extremely, extremely difficult decision because my plan was always to stay here at Swansea for a number of years. “I have always been up front and honest. I have always said that I wouldn’t be here forever and that one day I would go, but I honestly never thought the opportunity would come round now. “In my life and in my football, I have been very happy in Swansea. “But when an opportunity to work at a club which is more than a club comes round, it’s a professional challenge which is too good to turn down. “Liverpool are one of the dynasties of the game. They have won five European Cups and their status is up there with AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.” |

The former judge suffered through 10 minutes of insults and was prevented from making a speech at the Democracy Day celebration in Ogun state Bola Ajibola, a former World Court Judge, had a rude shock on Tuesday in Abeokuta as he was openly booed by the audience at the event to mark Democracy Day and the one-year anniversary of the Action Congress of Nigeria's government in Ogun state. Mr. Ajibola, who served in the previous administration led by Gbenga Daniel of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was shamed off the stage without being allowed to finish his speech. The former world court judge, who was once a Minister of Justice, was at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, where thousands of guests came to be part of the celebrations. The audience accused him of not being a sincere statesman. Mr. Ajibola, who is in his 70's, was about to mount the podium to deliver his speech when he was shouted down by the aggrieved audience. Embarrassed, the former world court judge made a passionate appeal to the audience. "Let me die before you judge me, let me say my own view. I am here for the good of our state, Nigeria and the whole world. I have tried and worked for the progress of Owu, Ogun, Nigeria and the whole world, so don't blame, rather you should praise me," he pleaded. Contrary to the disgrace meted out to the former judge, earlier speakers at the occasion, which include former Military administrators of the state, Oladehinde Joseph, Daniel Akintonde and Kayode Olofinmoyin, were applauded by the audience. Mr. Ajibola however suffered through at least 10 minutes of ill-will before the intervention of Governor Ibikunle Amosun; former state governor, Olusegun Osoba, and the Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun Gbadebo, who eventually came to his rescue. Mr. TAjibola was the Chairman of the Elders Consultative Forum in Ogun State during the last administration. The forum was alleged to have lost focus, with several accusations that it was acting a script as directed by Mr. Daniel. |
