An extremist Muslim is one that will kill or explode you as commanded by the Quran.

A radical Muslim is one who vocally demands you be killed or exploded, but won't do it themselves. They'll get the extremist to do it, as commanded by the Quran.

A moderate Muslim is one who believes quietly that you should be killed or exploded. They argue for the acceptance of Islam in public and call it a religion of peace. And continue to attend their radical imam's mosque and pay the zakat so they can fill their basements with weapons to arm the radicals and extremists. As commanded by the Quran.

Salafists are the worst, most evil kinds of muslims - the ones that want to take away all women's rights, not let non-muslims in government, practice the most barbaric of activities and spread Shariah.

No they don't. Hinduism for one is extremely polytheistic, with over 33 Million Gods. Buddhism does not require a belief in a god, and in fact Buddhism itself rejects the idea of a creator god that made the universe, like the Christian god or the Muslim god. The ancient Sumerian, Egyptian and Greek gods were a pantheon of gods, the latter of which contained Zeus, the god of thunder and ruler over Mount Olympus, who's artistic representation was stolen by early European Christians as the depiction for the Christian god.

Zoroastrianism worshipped a single god on the basis of good vs evil 1000 years before Christianity even existed, and arguably before Judaism existed too. It is believed that many semite religions such as Judaism, Christianity, arab religions and later Islam, were all influenced by Zoroastrianism's monotheism, religious structure and morality divide, as much as they hated to admit it.

None of them are right (except maybe modern Buddhism), and gods do not exist.

1300 years ago is hardly the "ancient" Middle East. Try ancient Sumeria, Akkadia, the Hittite Empire and Ancient Egypt of over 3000BCE+, over four thousand years before the very thought of "muslim" or "islam" or "allah" even existed.

The reason Allah or god is more common in the Middle East is because he was made up by the tribes who came to inhabit the middle east. The Christian, the Jewish, the Arab, The muslim god are all just rewrites of an original, polytheistic Semitic pantheon that emerged from the Middle East. There is nothing that makes Allah or the muslim faith any more believable than any other religion (Indeed, it's late emergence in history is more discrediting than anything). The only reason Islam got so big is because it's proponents murdered, raped and subdued enough cities for it to become huge. Why add "shocking" to your headline? There is nothing shocking whatsoever about this revelation. Just last year, a group of young muslim "men" attacked a helpless 74 year old woman, Mrs Bridget Agbahime in Kano for alleged blasphemy simply because she objected to them using her shop premises for ablution.

If that didn't paint a clear picture of what islam stands for nothing else will.

A lot of people seem to be under the mindset that the believers in extreme Islam in Nigeria are a tiny minority in Nigeria, even Naijan muslims. That's why I put "shocking" into the headline. Utterly shocking. Nigeria's muslims have polled as having the highest amount of Muslims who openly support ISIS/ISIL of ANY muslim or large muslim-population country, according to the 2017 report on Muslims and Islam by the Pew research centre. 20% also responded "I don't know".

Jakarta’s Christian governor has been sentenced to two years in prison after a trial that was widely seen as a measure of religious pluralism in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, better known as Ahok, was “found to have legitimately and convincingly conducted a criminal act of blasphemy, and because of that we have imposed two years of imprisonment”, the head judge, Dwiarso Budi Santiarto, told the court.

“As part of a religious society, the defendant should be careful to not use words with negative connotations regarding the symbols of religions, including the religion of the defendant himself.”

Another judge, Abdul Rosyad, said reasons for the stiff sentence included that “the defendant did not feel guilt, the defendant’s act has caused anxiety and hurt Muslims”.

After the verdict was read out, Ahok was taken in an armoured police van to a prison in Cipinang, East Jakarta.

Hundreds of supporters wearing his signature red and blue check print gathered outside the jail on Tuesday afternoon. A candelit vigil was planned for the evening.

Photos posted on social media showed prison officials posing with the convicted governor.

Ahok’s lawyer said he would appeal against the sentence. It was unclear whether he would be released once the legal challenge was under way.

The blasphemy charge related to Ahok’s reference to a passage of the Qur’an during his re-election campaign in September, which hardline Islamist groups said amounted to insulting the holy book.

He insinuated that his opponents had used a Qur’anic verse to trick people into voting against him. An edited version of the speech went viral, sparking outrage. Ahok, a Christian with ethnic Chinese roots, is a “double minority” in Indonesia.

A series of protests against him drew hundreds of thousands on to the streets of the capital late last year. On Tuesday, hundreds of members of hardline Islamist groups gathered outside the south Jakarta courtroom amid a heavy security presence, with many calling for Ahok to receive the maximum penalty.

As news of the sentence emerged, some protesters shouted “God is greatest”.

The government has been criticised for not doing enough to protect religious minorities, but President Joko Widodo, an ally of Ahok’s, has called for opponents to respect the legal process.

Thousands of police have been deployed in the capital to prevent clashes between Ahok supporters and opponents. “Both groups will have the opportunity to demonstrate but we are taking steps to prevent clashes,” said the national police spokesman, Setyo Wasisto.

Ahok lost his bid for re-election in an April run-off to a Muslim rival, Anies Baswedan, who is scheduled to take over in October. The vote was the most divisive and religiously charged in recent years.

With Ahok in detention, Jakarta’s deputy governor, Djarot Saiful Hidayat, will assume the role of acting governor.

The decision to jail Ahok surprised some observers because prosecutors had called for a conditional sentence of two years’ probation.

They also dropped their demand that Ahok be charged with blasphemy under article 156a of the criminal code, which carries a maximum five-year sentence, instead recommending that he face a lesser charge.

Andreas Harsono, an Indonesia researcher at Human Rights Watch, said the verdict was “a sad day for Indonesia”.

“Ahok’s is the biggest blasphemy case in the history of Indonesia. He is the governor of Indonesia’s largest city, an ally of the president. If he can be sent to jail, what could happen to others?” he said.

Harsono said more than 100 Indonesians had been convicted of blasphemy in the past decade, with acquittals in such cases extremely rare.

Todung Mulya Lubis, a human rights lawyer who defended the Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, said it was worrying that one judge cited the leader of the hardline Islamic Defenders Front as an expert in the judgment.

“[The group’s leader] Rizieq Shihab cannot be considered as an expert because he openly, publicly accused Ahok of blasphemy, so he is not an independent, neutral expert any more. But the judges mentioned his name in their judgment and I thought this is not correct.

“The judges also talked about experts from [the Islamic organisation] Majelis Ulama Indonesia. With all respect, I don’t think they can be considered as experts because they had taken sides long before the trial.”

Lubis said the verdict set a “bad precedent”, adding: “Religion is a private matter … so when you put it in the criminal code it can be used by people to discredit and suppress others. This is the problem with the blasphemy law. This is a very sad moment for us.”

Too Many of Nigeria's Women Are Targets—Not Just the Kidnapped Girls

Boko Haram's recent kidnappings of schoolgirls from the town of Chibok in Borno state, Nigeria, at least in its explosive aftermath, is reminiscent of the legal cases of two northern Nigerian women, Safiya Hussaini and Amina Lawal, who were sentenced to death by stoning under sharia law in 2002. Though unrelated – the stoning sentences were state-sanctioned punishments that were later overturned, and the kidnappings are a criminal act by a terrorist group – these cases illustrate how the legal climate in northern Nigeria has reached a point where girls can be seen as chattels to be taken, held, sold and, according to the latest video purportedly released by Boko Haram, indoctrinated and bartered.

Before 2000, the scope of sharia law in Nigeria was limited to civil cases. Since then, nine northern Nigerian states have adopted sharia law fully, to include criminal cases as well. A further three northern states have adopted sharia law in populations where Muslims are the majority. Sharia law, a group of Islamic moral codes and laws that determine what is and isn’t allowed for Muslims, exists side by side with civil law in these states.
The case of Hussaini, a divorced mother, was the first of its kind in Nigeria to have an international impact following the adoption of sharia law into the penal code system in some northern Nigerian states. Hussaini's crime was that she had a child out of wedlock, with a married man. Despite being divorced, she was tried for adultery and sentenced in a sharia court in Sokoto state. In the month her case was dismissed after an appeal, Amina Lawal, another divorced mother, was sentenced for the same crime in a sharia court in Katsina state. Lawal's case was eventually overturned in 2003 by a sharia court of appeal.


In both cases, the women won their appeals because of the grassroots efforts of activists, such as human rights lawyer Hauwa Ibrahim and Dr. Ayesha Imam of Baobab for Women's Human Rights, both are highly accomplished women from northern Nigeria. Also in both cases, the fathers of Hussaini and Lawal's children were not prosecuted. To prosecute men for adultery, four male eyewitnesses are required. Hussaini, after her sentencing, allegedly said that her crime was being a woman. Meanwhile, the attorney general of Sokoto, Aliyu Abubakar Sanyinna, declared the sharia court was merely following Allah's law.

In 1999, the then governor of Zamfara state, Ahmed Sani Yerima, began a campaign to adopt sharia law in his state, and in 2000 became the first governor to formally adopt sharia when the law took effect. The federal government considers the adoption of sharia law a state right, but has criticized sharia punishments such as stonings, hand amputations and floggings. Despite the objections of members of the judiciary, the adoption of sharia law remains a state right in Nigeria.

Boko Haram's kidnappings may not have been state-sanctioned, but its leader, Abubakar Shekau, declared that the group was following Allah's order. Regardless of his fanatical motivation, the kidnappings were a criminal act and should have been handled as such by state authorities. But they failed to address the matter until it became a national and international embarrassment.

The facts surrounding the kidnappings are still unclear: for instance, were state authorities warned about Boko Haram's plans? What is clear is that for a state that would have been swift to prosecute the girls for adultery and other sharia-related crimes, Borno was incredibly slow to respond when the girls became victims of a crime. Shekau's response to the national outcry that ensued—that he would sell the girls as slaves in the market—is evidence of Boko Haram's assumption of ownership of the girls, and it begs the question, “what gave him the right to make such a reprehensible statement?” Shekau has made known his wish to see sharia law imposed throughout Nigeria. I would suggest that when a state adopts sharia laws that are in their application blatantly unfavorable to women, it creates a legal climate in which a terrorist group like Boko Haram believes it has a right to do as it pleases with girls without prosecution.

I doubt that any level of public outrage in Nigeria would change how Boko Haram sees the girls. I say this as a Nigerian woman of Muslim parentage who writes fiction and plays to protest the adoption of sharia law in northern Nigeria, and who has often wondered if there is any value in doing that. Nigerians knew not to bother addressing Boko Haram when they began their campaign to “Bring Back Our Girls”; otherwise, their campaign slogan would have been “Release Our Girls.” If nothing else, the outrage of the rest of the world forced our president, Goodluck Jonathan, to declare his commitment to finding the girls and returning them to their families.

It should also, once again, put a spotlight on the adoption of sharia law in northern Nigeria and its dangerous trajectory. I worry that Boko Haram might confuse the negative attention they’re getting worldwide for acclaim, and trying to shame them as a group of cowardly men scared of girls might only encourage them to toughen their stance. But without the international attention the kidnappings have received, we might still be waiting for the findings of yet another committee on terrorism.

The Nigerian government has yet to catch up with acts of terrorism, and Boko Haram may well be afraid of girls and their potential to develop into educated, accomplished women. But, ultimately, Boko Haram kidnapped the schoolgirls because, in the current legal climate in northern Nigeria, they could.

Poor logic. You are not "practicing Islam" by playing in a football tournament fool. If Nigeria participates in these games it is like announcing that it is a Muslim nation, which it is NOT.

Also, Islam is backwards and revolting. Because of laws letting muslims in the North "practice their religion", there is mass child-marriage of little children to rapist pedophiles, and there are jihadists like Boko Haram who brainwash kids and the desperate, rape and murder and steal, destroy infrastructure and schools (this is a sign that they are extremely stupid), and perpetually keep Northern Nigeria in the Dark Ages.

If Nigeria had no muslims, it would have no Boko Haram.
