A predisposed, irrational fear of a creator that has no factual evidence of existence and a LOT of circumstantial evidence for non-existence, that was instilled in you by an extremely religious culture. An unmarried couple have been stoned to death in public in north-east Mali, in the first such incident since jihadi groups were driven out of the region.

Jihadis seized key northern cities in Mali in March 2012, and though they were driven out by a French-led military intervention in 2013, Islamist groups continue to make their presence felt with frequent attacks on domestic and foreign forces.

“The Islamists dug two holes where they put the man and the woman who lived maritally without being married,” said a local official. “They were stoned to death.”

The execution happened in Taghlit, close to Aguelhok in the Kidal region, on Tuesday. The same source told AFP that members of the public were invited to take part.

“Four people threw stones at them until they died,” they said.

Another local official said the ringleaders had accused the unmarried couple of violating “Islamic law”, which requires punishment by stoning.

During their brief control of key towns in the north, jihadist groups imposed a version of Sharia law which forced women to wear veils and set whipping and stoning as punishment for transgressions.

In July 2012, the Al-Qaida-linked Ansar Dine group stoned a couple in public in Aguelhok they had accused of having children outside marriage.

The Malian Association for the Defence of Human Rights described Tuesday’s stoning as “cowardly murder”.

“This is barbaric. The people who did this should be arrested and put on trial,” said Oumar Diakite, an AMDH official.

The opposition Parena party meanwhile noted that 309 people had been killed since the beginning of the year by armed groups, describing “alarm at the deterioration of the security situation” two years after the signature of a peace deal.

That accord was aimed at ending successive uprisings by Tuareg rebels, who signed the deal along with the government and pro-Bamako militias in the hope of bringing stability to the north.

The last Tuareg rebellion in 2012 was hijacked by the Islamists, throwing the country into chaos.

The stoning comes on the eve of an expected visit to Mali by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who is due to meet French troops stationed there on Thursday or Friday.

A UN mission known by its acronym Minusma has also been stationed in the west African country since 2013 and is considered the world body’s most dangerous active peacekeeping deployment.

"Libya" was the original name for a large section of the modern meaning of "Africa", used to denote the regions to the East and South of Egypt/Aegyptos.

If we look a little more at this map, another familiar name arises.

"Asia" and "Africa" were the names of Roman provinces, specifically the region directly East of the Agaean Sea in what is now Turkey, and the region comprising of modern day Tunisia/Libya, respectively. So how did they come to be the names of entire continents?

During the collapse of the Roman and subsequent Persian empires, and the constant upset and violence bought by steppe warlords such as Attila the Hun, Tamerlane and Genghis Khan, and the rise of Islam and the Islamic caliphates, cultural communication and transmission between East and West in Eurasia was strangled. So much so that the once well connected lands of China, India, the Steppes, the Tengri, Altai and Himalayan mountains and the Nile kingdoms had become myths and fables in the late Middle Ages of Europe. Before and during the rise of the Renaissance in Italy and France, Africa and Asia had mutated from terms for Roman Provinces to, essentially, meaning "everything South of Europe" and "Everything East of Europe" respectively. The famous explorer, and also infamous genocidal madman Columbus who's Mesoamerican regimes lead to the deaths of tens of millions of American Indian natives, dreamed of discovering Asia because of the stories he had heard about it's colossal gold and mineral reserves.

After technological advances brought on by the renaissance such as steam power, the first industrial factories, highly developed seafaring, cartography, electricity and - perhaps most important of all - the military development of cannons and firearms, European nations went on to invade, pillage and create their own colony upon essentially every nation, every homeland and every empire on the entire planet - newfound technology accelerating the rate at which they could win conflicts and the capability to manage huge intercontinental empires. Sometimes the Europeans would straight up invade, but this was rare. Usually they would appear as friends to the locals, or benign traders, secretly attepting to turn them against one another - to "divide and conquer", or to have them lower their guards as European troops and military ensembles would continuously encroach upon sovereign land. By the time many kingdoms knew what was up, it was already too late. Japan just barely escaped falling to the British and the Dutch Empires because the country had noticed the warning signs and the vast difference between their technologies, and even then it took a highly militarised, fascistic Japan to be able to remain independent of the European menace.

After European nations, namely the French, Spanish, Dutch, German, Belgian and British Empires (the last of which Nigeria is a former colony) had consolidated control over their colonies, their word and law became law. Among these laws included terminologies for the names of certain world regions. The names "Africa" and "Asia" were used to describe the modern continents we now know.

It is mildly ironic that the very name "Africa" itself, that a lot of "Africans" look to as a form of solidarity and belonging, is in the end just another imported biproduct of the European imperialist regimes and conquerors.
