Fort Hood attacker to be executed by firing squad - a first for US military since World War Two

The Pentagon has announced it will execute a former US Army major by firing squad, the first military execution in more than 60 years.

Nidal Hasan fatally shot 13 unarmed US soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009, injuring another 32.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced on social media on Monday that US defence secretary Pete Hegseth had made the recommendation and President Donald Trump approved it.

The execution is scheduled to take place at Fort Hood in Texas on 3 December, the secretary of the US Army said on Tuesday. It will be the first military execution by firing squad since the end of World War Two.

"Judgement day for Hasan has finally come," Parnell wrote on X.

Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist from Virginia, killed 13 soldiers at the base in Texas in 2009 and later admitted in court he was the gunman and apologised for "any mistakes".

He said during his court-martial in 2013 that he believed he was protecting Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The killings on 5 November 2009 were the deadliest ever non-combat attack on an American military base.

The attack took place in a crowded medical building where deploying soldiers were awaiting check-ups and vaccines.

US President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of former US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted over the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people and wounded 32 others.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced the decision in a post on X on Monday, saying Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had recommended the execution and Trump had approved it.

“Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has recommended — and President Donald J. Trump has approved — death by U.S. Army firing squad for convicted terrorist Nidal Malik Hasan.

“The Secretary of the Army will set the time and place of the execution,” Parnell said.

Hasan was convicted by a military jury in 2013 of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder over the November 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas.

He opened fire at a military facility where soldiers were undergoing processing for deployment, killing 13 people and injuring 32 others.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist at the time, was sentenced to death following the trial.

The approval sets in motion the process for his execution, although no date has been announced. The Army Secretary will determine when and where it will take place.

If carried out, Hasan’s execution would be the first by the US military since 1961.
