Scottish, Welsh, Irish parties declare right to break from UK

Leaders of the main Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh nationalist parties on Monday declared their right to choose whether to remain in the UK or not at a rare meeting in the Welsh capital Cardiff.

All three parties — the Scottish National Party (SNP), Plaid Cymru in Wales and the pro-Irish unity Sinn Fein — want to break away from the UK.

The meeting came just days after US President Donald Trump waded in, saying he would back a united Ireland, which Northern Ireland’s Michelle O’Neill said showed “the unity debate is very much alive”.

“Our nations have the right to self-determination. No Westminster government (the UK government) has the right to block democracy or undermine the principle that our people will decide their own future,” a memorandum of understanding stated.

SNP leader John Swinney, Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of Plaid Cymru in Wales and Mary Lou McDonald and O’Neill, leader and deputy leader of pro-Irish unity Sinn Fein met in their capacity as party leaders, rather than as officials in their respective governments.

O’Neill is also Northern Ireland’s first minister while Iorwerth and Swinney are first ministers of their respective nations.

Announcing the agreement, Swinney said the three parties were “absolutely united by that principle of self-determination”, adding that this “lies at the heart of the agreement that we have signed today”.

"For the first time ever, people across these islands have first ministers in Scotland, in Wales and in the North of Ireland who are all committed to independence from the United Kingdom,” the memorandum of understanding said.

“The future of our nations belongs in the European Union.”

The independence parties are the biggest in both the Scottish and Welsh parliaments for the first time since devolution measures began in 1999. Sinn Fein has been the biggest party in Northern Ireland’s assembly since 2022.

Fresh Push To Break Up UK As Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland Leaders Meet Monday In Cardiff

The leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are set to meet in Cardiff on Monday to discuss a fresh push for constitutional change and greater self-determination for the three nations, The Telegraph reports.

The unprecedented summit will bring together Scottish First Minister John Swinney, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iowerth and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill.

The leaders are expected to sign a joint declaration asserting the right of their respective nations to determine their constitutional futures, including the possibility of independence referendums.

They will also be joined by Mary Lou McDonald, president of Sinn Fein and leader of the opposition in the Republic of Ireland.

The meeting will take place at the St David’s Hotel overlooking Cardiff Bay, where the leaders are expected to discuss cooperation on the economy, energy, Europe, international relations and self-determination.

Four police officers, seven civilians killed in Benue community attack

Eleven people, including four policemen and seven civilians, were killed when suspected armed herders attacked Ayilamo community in the Tombo Council Ward of Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, the police have confirmed.

The attack reportedly occurred between Thursday night and the early hours of Friday, with residents alleging that the attackers invaded the community from Alufu Road in neighbouring Taraba State.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview on Friday, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Peter Aondongu, said four policemen and seven civilians were killed during the attack.

“We lost four policemen and seven civilians during the attack and I will soon issue a statement,” he said.

Earlier, a resident of the community, who identified himself as Tyolumun Ugande, told journalists that about 200 suspected armed herders invaded the community, shooting at residents and burning houses.

Ugande said a detachment of Mobile Policemen deployed to Ayilamo confronted the attackers.

He said, “A detachment of Mobile Policemen deployed to Ayilamo confronted the bandits who were armed with sophisticated weapons

“After several hours of exchange of gun fire, the bandits retreated but on Friday morning four bodies of Mobile Police men and residents of the community were recovered in the bush.”

The Secretary of the Ayilamo Security Committee, Umishi Terungwa, who corroborated Ugande’s account, said the incident occurred between Thursday night and the early hours of Friday.

He said, “0n September, 10, 2026, Ayilamo community suffered a devastating attack attributed to Fulani assailants, leaving multiple casualties.

“Among the victims were respected elders, community members and security personnel.”

Terungwa listed some of the civilian casualties as Baba Nyikyaa Mbanengen Agia, Mkohol Ahowe, Agah Saanmoyol (Dodo), Baba Mlahaga Kpurkpur, Geoffrey Aondoakaa Gaku (Bala), and two children.

The four Mobile Police officers killed were identified as ASP Paul Ina, Insp. Mohammed Yusuf, Insp. Oge Ikechukwu and Insp. Edeh Andrew.

While Ugande initially put the death toll at 12, including four policemen and eight residents, the police confirmed seven civilian deaths and four policemen killed in the attack.

Suspected Herdsmen Storm Otukpo Communities In Benue, Kill At Least 15 Persons, Injure Scores Of Others


At least 15 people have been killed after suspected armed herders launched coordinated attacks on communities in Ugboju District of the Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State, in yet another wave of deadly violence that has continued to ravage the state.

The attacks, which began in the early hours of Tuesday, left at least 14 residents dead in Efeyi-Ugboju, while another victim was reportedly killed a day earlier in nearby Ipom-Ugboju.

Residents told SaharaReporters that the gunmen invaded Efeyi-Ugboju at about 5am and operated for more than four hours, unleashing terror on the community before fleeing.

As of about 11:30am on Tuesday, locals said corpses were still being recovered from surrounding bushes and homes, raising fears that the death toll could climb further. Several injured victims were rushed to hospitals for emergency treatment.

A resident, who requested anonymity for security reasons, described the attack as a massacre carried out with little or no resistance.

"The attackers stormed the community before dawn and continued killing people until after 9am. Fourteen bodies have already been recovered in Efeyi-Ugboju, while another resident was killed in Ipom-Ugboju on Monday. We fear more bodies may still be found because many people remain unaccounted for," the resident said.

Confirming the incident, Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Maxwell Ogiri, said authorities had recovered 14 bodies from Efeyi-Ugboju, while many other residents sustained gunshot injuries.

He condemned the killings, describing them as a calculated assault on innocent civilians.

"This was a deliberate attack on defenseless people. There was no confrontation or provocation. The gunmen came with one mission — to kill. So far, we have recovered 14 bodies, while many survivors are receiving treatment for serious injuries. Fear has gripped the area, and residents of neighbouring communities are fleeing to avoid suffering the same fate," Ogiri said.

The council chairman also questioned the effectiveness of security deployments in the area, noting that the presence of soldiers, police officers, Mobile Police personnel and Agro-Rangers had failed to prevent the carnage.

"We already have multiple security formations operating in this axis, yet these attacks continue. Government must strengthen enforcement of the state's Anti-Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law because the recurring violence is closely linked to the failure to fully implement that law," he added.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had yet to receive a detailed briefing on the incident.
