An author, Jeffrey Preffer argued in his book, “Dying for a Paycheck,” that modern workplace can inflict dangerous level of stress on employees and such practice don’t help companies and government are ignoring an impending health crisis.
An Uber software engineer making a six-figure income killed himself as reported by a BBC publication. His family blamed his death on workplace stress. Another 21-year-old Merrill Lynch intern was said to have collapse and died after working for 72 straight hours.
A medical consultant and Chairman of The Society Of Family Physicians of Nigeria, Dr. Olabode Shabi presented a paper titled “Stress and Depression in Workplace: Strategic Approach to Management.” In his presentation, he said about 7 million Nigerians are CURRENTLY suffering from mental health problems associated with stress and depression.
Workplace stress can seem inevitable, especially if your financial security depends solely on your paycheck. Work stress can give more than tension, headaches or sleepless nights—it can decrease your life span.
Cumulative Health Effect of Work Stress
The workplace is making people sick and sometimes leading to death—and people should care.
Harmful workplace practice includes things like long working hours, work-family conflict, economic insecurity arising from job losses and not having regular or predictable work hours, an absence of job controls, poor interpersonal relationship with colleagues and superior, struggling to meet unrealistic targets as well as low trust level and lack of problem solving among workers.
The world Economic Forum estimates that about 63 percent of all deaths are caused by chronic disease and non-communicable disease. Chronic diseases are caused by stress likewise unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, drinking, taking drugs and overeating are stress related.
An American institute named American Institute of Stress claims that work place stress cost the American economy some $300bn each year.
Stressed employee are more likely to quit their job and turnover is expensive. Sick and stressed employee are not as proficient or productive in their work as those healthier.
Symptoms of Work Stress
Some major symptoms of work stress include persistently sad moods, loss of pleasure in usual activities, feeling of helplessness and guilt or worthlessness. Others are fatigue, loss of memory and concentration, loss of decision making capability, restlessness, sleep disturbance and loss in appetite or weight.
How to manage work stress effectively
People should choose their employer not only for salary and promotion opportunities but based on whether the job will be good for their psychological and physical health.
Adopt healthy life style
Create time for fun and relaxation
Avoid unnecessary stress—identify self-imposing stress
Eat right and sleep well
Be clear on what is required of you and stay organized
Resolve conflict positively
Avoid drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes
Regular exercise is highly encouraged
Go for massage therapies—very effective at killing off stress. People are adopting it in droves. If you don’t have the time to go to massage parlors or spas, you can get an electronic massager -- as effective as a human massager.
Work to live—don’t work to end up dead.
