oh great.
could you please pm me the company website so I can have a look?
Many thanks in advance!

einsteino:
Yes, the firm is in many markets and is one of North America's largest engineering firms. So it has engineers from various disciplines, not only civil. There are some openings for project coordinator and field engineers posted on the company website.

Hi, I just moved to Canada as a PR. any chance your firm is hiring Civil Engineers other than structural? I have experience in project coordination and management. please let me know.

Thank you in advance smiley

einsteino:
A colleague at work, is trying to make the switch from Structural Designer to Structural Engineer. She asked me for some help with the technical exams PEO(Professional Engineers Ontario) assigned her. After looking at the courses, I came up with what I think are the best courses to take as an immigrant structural engineer. Since most Nigerian Civil Engineers are heavily focused on structures, this course selection might be the wiser choice for a Nigerian Civil Engineer who finds his/herself in my colleague's shoe.

Two group A courses:
Elementary Structural Analysis
Elementary Structural Design

One group B course:
Advanced Structural Design

I selected these courses because they involve less reading, since their knowledge areas overlap. They are also what I use everyday at work. That way, you are not just trying to pass an exam but brushing up on skills that you would need to land and keep a structural engineer job in Canada.

The only knowledge area in those courses that would be alien to Nigerian trained engineers is Earthquake Engineering and Seismic Design. The good thing is that the focus here is earthquake loads rather than the engineering design itself, that should not be difficult to learn. Even if it were the engineering, I would rather study that than have to do courses like Hydraulics or Geotechnical Engineering lol.

I have included a google drive link to reference textbooks and a draft of the required Canadian code. One thing to note, design manuals cover the same topics as textbooks. At work, we use Design manuals more often than textbooks but when you are trying to learn something for the first time, focus on textbooks.

Do not overload yourself, you are not trying to read every text from cover to cover. Focus on the topics listed by PEO, I also included a pdf of this.

If all of this seems too much for you, exhale and remember that life doesn't begin nor end in Engineering. There are several other rewarding careers in Canada and probably with less than half the stress. Even I remind myself of this. If you insist this is for you but you need an easier way out, consider applying to other provincial engineering regulators like APEGA.

One last tip:
If applying to PEO, you should make sure that you include a course description for at least all undergraduate courses. This is especially important if you don't have a Canadian post graduate Engineering degree (Masters or PhD). Even though I have that, I still included a course description, better safe than sorry. In the absence of course descriptions for a foreign undergrad degree, PEO is more likely to ask you to sit exams because they have no way to tell what topics your education covered.

Please you guys should advise me on what to do

I will be arriving Canada next month as a PR. the thing is I initially booked a ticket for Calgary but now I have job leads in Ontario.
I've asked my airline to reroute but its not possible due to crazily high fares.

the thing is my first landing in Canada will be in Montreal with final destination as Calgary. how do I manoeuvre this as I understand that the immigration Officer will require me to give them an address for my PR card.

can I get to Calgary as per my ticket and then leave for Ontario immediately? will it be a problem if the address on my PR card is different from the address on my social Insurance card?

Thank you very much for any guidance you guys can provide.

Hello Dear Nairalanders,
I have an issue that needs urgent advise.

In 2019 I applied through an agent for a work permit visa to Canada. The agent claimed to have a contract with a company in Canada to provide workers. I was shown a job offer with salary, benefits, etc. I accepted but was delayed due to covid-19. Fast forward to 2021 when I was asked by the agent to go for biometrics and medicals, I discovered that my file number started with a V (V for visitor’s visa) and not a W (W for workers permit). That’s when I knew they were fraudulent (promising a work visa while applying for a visitor visa. Now I have a legitimate admission from a university in Canada, this time I did the applications myself but I’m yet to cancel the application for a visitor visa with the agent. I don’t trust the agent to cancel it properly. I’m even worried about what was filled in my application so I ordered a gcms note, I’m yet to get feedback though. I don’t want to get a ban. Please guys what do I do? How do I cancel my application with IRCC hassle free?

Thank you in advance for your advise.

Hello fellow Canadian pr holders and prospective pr holders. A friend of mine has an issue getting her PCC from the UAE. We have gone to the embassy and paid for attestation only to find out that we have to pay an additional 320 dhs for an online process. The sad thing is payments online can only be made using a card from GCC countries, that’s what it says on the dubaipolice.gov.ae website. Please is there anyone in the house that had to get a PCC from Dubai? She’s got 4 weeks left to submit her eAPR.
I’ll certainly come back to narrate our experience with the uae embassy. Please urgent help is needed. Thank you in advance
