SailorXY: Ohk I don hear
but the Mourinho reference is null
we can start as much as 5 midfielders in a game of football; same cannot be said for strikers
You talked about quality in depth, hence your preference for the addition of 4 midfielders at once. Going by this analogy, Mourihno could as well decide to buy cavani and Rooney as back up for deigo costa and Who says the three of them can't start together?

SailorXY: I can see you prefer we are under-stocked with low quality instead of over-stocked with real quality...
A gradual and systematic rebuilding process-that's my preference..

SailorXY: tell me what harm will be done to Manchester United if we have Herrera, Vidal, Carvalho, Kroos going into next season?
you want me to believe these guys will just not click cuz they are all moving to the EPL for the first time or some other funny reason?
if one or two has a slow start, then we still have the luxury of QUALITY even if some take a whole season to "acclimatize". it is better they start now & focus on clicking to devastating effect next season. besides prices of these players will.continue to rise as long as they remain relevant, so why wait a year to add £12m for the same good you could have gotten for less?
Why isn't Mourihno going for Diego costa, Luiz Suarez, cavani and maybe Rooney all at once, since it's evident Chelsea's problems are in the CF position....so as to have the "luxury of quality at his disposal"?

SailorXY: Fellaini WILL NOT be played in the pivot by van Gaal, he'll most likely be an Integral part of a plan b or plan c when things are not going according to initial plan in crucial games.
Don't put your money on this...

It was LVG who converted schwenisteiger to the central midfielder he is today- dude was kinda like an average winger for bayern prior to the dutchman's arrival at the club.

SailorXY: we must get back into top 2, we are not a top 4-battling team.. its not negotiable. we should be done with stocking average legs all over the pitch.
A top four finish in lVG's 1st season should be satisfactory-lets not get ahead of ourselves...

Remember Moyes was only mandated to qualify us for the champions league, despite inheriting a team that won the the league by 11 points the previous season

SailorXY: let's not downplay Sir Alex's achievement with this midfielders, it won't be good for the long-term future of this club!
Nobody is downplaying anything...

Hopefully, The problem would be resolved. However, I doubt if the purchase of four midfielders at once, all in the name of "sorting out", would do us much good.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 7:59pm On Jun 30, 2014
SailorXY: & we have been waiting for them to up the ante for ages.
We have a new manager who will most likely come in with new ideas and innovations. Hopefully some of our players will regain their form. At the end of the season, stock-taking would be done, and the coach would then decide what to do. Like I said earlier, we have spent close to 60m on two midfielders in the last 12 months.

SailorXY: if Herrera himself requires some settling down time, we return to what?
That's exactly the crux of the matter..

Most of the players being touted as potential additions to our midfield are not playing in the epl, which means they would prolly need some time to acclimatize and adjust to the rigours and demands of the game in England. Why then should we "load" our team with such players all at once??
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 7:26pm On Jun 30, 2014
SailorXY: we are not buying 100 players but about 5...
if we sign only Herrera in midfield, what happens when he cops an injury?
the question no too hard chief
It's left to the other midfielders available to up the ante and do a job. You are already sounding as if hererra has even clicked just yet. undecided
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 4:37pm On Jun 30, 2014
elampiro: [s]You are the one arguing unnecessarily. RVP goals did not win us the league.

* The previous season, RVP scored 30 goals for Arsenal and Arsenal conceded the highest goals. How come his 30 goals didn't win Arsenal the title, yet you guys claim his 26 goals won us the title. Rubbish!

* Man United may have conceded the highest goals but goals conceded among the top 4 were very close to one another. You have forgotten that our defenders contributed 14 goals in that season (Evra 4, Evans 3, Rafel 3, Buttner 2, Vidic 1, Ferdianand 1) . The previous season, they contributed only three gaols.(Evans, Jones and Smalling 1 each). This means our defnders contributed 11 more goals in 2012/2013 than previous season, and you claim they were poor? OMG!!! cheesy cheesy cheesy grin

* In 2011/2012 we had only 16 different players on the score sheet. In 2012/13, we had 20 players. If we had 20 players on the score sheet in 2011/2012 the league would have been won.

* What the above goals record shows is that our defenders (particularly full backs, were overlapping to support attack while exposing our rare. No wonder Evra and Rafael contributed 5 and 3 assists respectively. This usually result to a matter of who outscores who eventually. So the defenders did their job well.

* In case you don't know, Man United performed better in 2011/2012 than 2012/2013. RVP did not help us to perform better. We scored more goals in previous season and conceded less. We ended with same number of points in both seasons. We were only lucky City had some misfortunes (Tevez, Balotelli, Zabeleta) and bad results in the second half of 2012/2013 season just as we had our misfortunes in the first half of 2011/2012 season. So what exactly did RVP bring to the table? He scored 26 goals, and it wasn't the club's record. What his inclusion did for us, was nothing other than limiting the chances of Hernadez, Nani, Welbeck and Valencia who had very high return of goals and assists the previous season. Everyone had to adjust their game to suit him. The result is what we have today- everyone became poor overnight. grin grin grin Before RVP arrival, Nani, Valencia, Young were all joy to watch because everyone played to score, and not playing to find a one man in the box to help score all the goals. cheesy cheesy cheesy[/s]

The Onazi-mikel pivot is not strong enough (no thanks to the slouch from Chelsea). I hope we are not completely dominated in central midfield today
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola:
elampiro: So where was SAF?

Where did you put the assists and goals from other players?

* Without RVP we had a solid squad going into that season. De Gea had improved so much from the previous season. Scholes returned. Ferdinand and Evans were injury free.

RVP was a quality addition. That was what it was. Chicharito could have gotten us about 20 goals from as many matches. Welbeck's goals should have gone up too because he should have gotten more central role. When RVP went dry we won all matches exepting one draw. Rooney's goals return that period became high, and from the number 10 and wing. Kagawa got his hatrick that period.

No one player won us the league. An addition of a quality player to an already strong team managed by a world class coach will always have a huge impact. As we have in Bale for Madid, and possible as we are going to have Costa for Chelsea.
Guy, stop arguing unnecessarily.

That season, we conceded the highest no of goals among teams in the top 4. Our wing play was virtually non-existent so what exactly was special about us aside RVP's crucial goals?
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 9:14am On Jun 30, 2014
elampiro: Abeg abeg abeg. I had to log on today 'cos of this. RVP was in the team that played world cup final. Dats all.

Did you watch last world cup sef?

This was how you said he won us 2013 EPL
Who now won it for us? Jones? Valencia? undecided
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 9:11am On Jun 30, 2014
SailorXY: & I say the more the merrier
what happens if Herrera cops an injury after 4 weeks? we return to shyte?
Even if we buy 100 players, we can only register 25 of them.

My assertion still stands- the rebuilding process should be a gradual and systematic one.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 11:17pm On Jun 29, 2014
SailorXY: there's really no point stretching this, but I still believe players like Cleverley, Anderson, Carrick & Young should not be starting games in Manchester United next season as they are no longer good enough.
if this is the case, then there must be replacements to avoid crisis mid-season
If there isn't any unforeseen departures, the acquisition of a LB, a CMF and a CB should be okay for us next season. At the end of the season, We can re-evaluate the situation of things and make appropriate changes where neccessary.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola:
SailorXY: you really believe Carrick should be starting games for Man United in 2014? I'm sorry, he's past it
If he can rediscover his form, I see no reason why he shouldn't be starting.

SailorXY: I agree Januzaj can be Giggs' replacement, who is the replacement for Young? or you also expect him to be starting games?
Nani's case is not predictable, who is the replacement for Scholes?
Within the last 12months, we have spent close to 60m on two central midfielders.
The club hasn't even taken a decision on the likes of bebe and zaha.

SailorXY: James will be expensive but Reus is another great option, the versatility is there
If we are looking to add to that attack, I'd rather we go for an Alexis Sanchez or an angel di-Maria, rather than a reus who will most likely constitute an unnecessary selection headache as regards what position to play him in.

SailorXY: Herrera alone can't cover the our midfield, we even need two more midfielders cleverley, Anderson & Carrick will not make it into the midfields of Man City, Chelsea, Bayern, Real Madrid, etc who we should be better or on par with... why should they make it into Manchester United?
So the purchase of 4 central midfielders in 12months is the solution, right?

SailorXY: What if
If we are prepared for upgrade, then so be it!
Like I said earlier, I'd prefer a situation in which the overhaul process is done systematically-making 5-6 high profile signings at once isn't the best thing to do IMO.

With the arrival of shaw, hererra and a CB, I think we should be strong enough for a top four finish next season, at least. At the end of the season, the situation can be re-assessed and we'll do whatever needs to be done.

SailorXY: well the only areas that doesn't need to be fortified are the GK, AM & CF positions

we may not have required wholesome changes last season but Giggs, Rio & Vidic is gone; add our reserve LB & our CM have needed an upgrade since Scholes' first retirement
LB.......shaw

CM...... Hererra

We can say januzaj is giggs' replacement.

IMO, we only need to sign a CB as replacement for rio/vidic

SailorXY: Carrick is not a youngster & should only be a back-up, if he must remain.
If carrick still has the legs to put in good performances, I see no reason why he shouldn't be in the starting lineup.Lets watch what happens next season. Alonso and pirlo aren't youngsters and.............. You know the rest.

SailorXY: Moyes made the mistake of underestimating Sir Alex's managerial prowess; the heavens kept wondering how Fergie won those last batch of trophies cuz its so glaring the team wasn't up to scratch. the weakness always showed when we faced the big boys in the league & champions league. Even Fergie knew the team was weak but his hands may have been tied by the debt or his arrogance or the sheer determination to achieve so much with so less... I can't say
but let's not overlook his great output for nothing
In As much as fergie's experience and managerial skills covered the team's shortcomings during his final years in charge, would you seriously attribute our 7th place finish to moyes' failure to overhaul the side immediately??

SailorXY: James Rodriguez will strengthen us going forward; no one cares about an orthodox winger or no. there's Valencia & Januzaj if need be
van Gaal will not even play 4-4-2
We don't need a James Rodriguez who would prolly cost nothing less than 65m when we are still faced with the problem of assigning mata and kagawa to their best positions.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 1:50pm On Jun 29, 2014
Pietro_Rico: even vlaar looked like a beckenbaur incarnate in that defensive set up of LVG.
The more reason why tournaments like the worldcup and euros, shouldn't be used to assess players.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola:
SailorXY: obviously we need many changes...
there should be a new player starting @ CB next season [experience: @ least one of Rio/Vidic must be replaced]
Shaw may be starting @ LB as well or just on the brink
Agreed...

SailorXY: there should be two new CMs starting next season [Herrera&.....]
Not necessarily...

I'd say fellaini and carrick should at least be given a final chance to prove themselves in the coming season.(I expect at least one of them to click ).

The acquisition of a decent "backup" midfielder (who can do a good job) as a replacement for either or both of cleverley and Anderson, won't be a bad idea anyways..

SailorXY: there should be @ least a new winger starting too [James or Reus for me... we have been Shiite there for 3 seasons & its written in the stars]
How on earth will These players improve our wing play when they aren't even orthodox wingers?

SailorXY: yea, we are that poor @ the moment & no ethic or 'club tradition' will straighten that
we already lost our fear factor even domestically, so we must lay off the deadwood! its that simple really
Moyes made that mistake & he's lost a lucrative job forever, van Gaal isn't willing to sail same boat
Moyes' failure was down to his tactical cluelessness-definitely not because he failed to make wholesome changes to a team that won the league by 11points the previous season.

I'm not saying we shouldn't overhaul the team- all I'm saying is that the process should be a gradual one.

elampiro: Who took this man to the world cup? Worst player at 2014 world cup.
But he has power undecided

dopeJemi: Who do we need in the defence then?
Hummels would be perfect. He is at the right age, and should also provide some maturity and leadership at the back. We still have Smalling, jones and Evans who are pretty decent CBs
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by Dadehmola: 11:29am On Jun 29, 2014
dopeJemi: We don't need rodriguez really, he plays the left wing right?? We need sanchez or di maria to displace valencia, hummels is a good choice buh is he ready to leave dortmund?

Well, Rodriguez is needed if we sell rooney

--------- de'gea --------

Rafael--- hummels--- de vrij--- shaw

--------- vidal------ herrera----

Sanchez/di Maria-- mata-- rodriguez

-------------- van persie ----------

There's no way I'm letting valencia play that right wing, even if it means taking a flight to england to get him killed

If we are not spending more than the amount you said, then januzaj can take valencia's place
We don't need these guys Abeg..

Too many sudden changes won't do the team any good, trust me.
