I want to apply to RPI and Virginia Tech they said they can accept an unofficial student transcript in the online admission process and once the students admission decision have been made and he is successfully he can submit the official copy of the transcript.

Some schools allow unofficial transcripts and once the admission is successful, they expect an official transcript. So it is not unusual to have such a scenario.

Can someone easily get admitted for a PhD program in US with a very good m.sc degree obtained in nigeria?

Yes but you have to have a good GRE score also because admission is based on holistic review of the application packet and not just a good M.Sc. I have two people that have been admitted into Ph.D program with an M.Sc degree obtained in Nigeria.

Please house is dis place meant for graduate alone?

Not really. You can ask your questions and I will answer it to the best of my knowledge.

As regards undergraduate admissions, there are not a lot of scholarships like graduate studies. If you are in for graduate studies, there are lot of funding opportunities as Fellowships, Teaching and Research Assistantships. However, such opportunities are not available for undergraduates. So if you want to come as an undergraduate, you need to provide the funding for yourself and you may need between $40,000 to $50,000 per session or per year for tuition and up keep expenses. However, there are some schools like Berry College that gives scholarships to international undergraduate students but such schools are very few.

On the alternative, this is the route that people take:
Because University tuition are very expensive, people (including US and Canadian Citizens) send their Children to Community Colleges to get an associate degree. The Associate degree is Equivalent to Nigerian OND obtained from our polytechnics. After getting the Associate degree, they can now seek for admission into the University. However, contrary to the Nigerian system that you start Direct entry from 200 level, you will continue from 300 level which is called the Junior Year. Thus, you have only 2 additional years to spend in the University and you will obtain your Bachelors degree.

There are 2 advantages of going through the Community College routes:
Instead of spending like $16,000 to $20,000 per semester, you will spend about half of that per semester in community college if you are an international student. if you are a Permanent Resident of Citizen, you will even pay less than $2000 per semester.

There are some scholarships that give international student Out of State Tuition Waivers so that they can pay in-State tuition like citizens and Permanent Residents. An example of such is The Florida West African Institute (FLAWI) which gives International Students (from Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde Islands, Cote D’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo) already enrolled in Florida public institution (either Universities or Community Colleges) the opportunity to pay in-state tuition. However, the waiting list is long and you may not get this until may be your second year in your program. You can find more information at https://chroniclesofanigerianimmigrant./2011/08/11/out-of-state-tuition-waivers-international-students-for-florida-schools-only/

The other advantage of attending the community college is that you do not need to write SAT or any other exam to be admitted into community colleges. All you need is your O'level results. You may need to evaluate your O'level results with WES (World Education Services) or AES (Academic Evaluation Services) before you are admitted.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

Hi sir. I read your post on the faqs. I still have some questions though.

I'm a law graduate going to the nigerian law school this year, but I desire to undertake my masters degree in law (LLM) (or probably any related course) (and possibly doctorate) in the US or Canada immediately after my law school prog which should end around Sept next year.
Please, how do I go about it?

The GRE seems to involve mathematics, and I've not done maths since secondary school. Is there hope?

Also, are there many scholarships for LLM in the US/Canada if I follow the GRE process?

Thanks sir.

Look at University of Calgary in Canada. I think you have a good chance there.

Hello Sir
I have a BA in Mass Comm from a nigerian university and would like to switch course to study nursing in US. Please what's your advice?

It is possible if you are able to sponsor yourself because there are very very very little or no funding in nursing program. Even if you decide to sponsor yourself, you will need to take a lot of pre-requisite courses before you even start the nursing program because your field is unrelated to nursing.

Sakaslim:

Hello,
Thanks so much for your detailed write up. However, I still don't understand the transcript evaluation by WES for mostly second class lower grades. These are my questions.
1 When the transcript gets evaluated by wes, is it sent to the school or you only do the evaluation to know if you meet the minimum requirement of at least a 2.5/4.0
2. Based on your Faqs one can easily deduce that any Cgpa above 3.00/5.00 in Nigeria would automatically be higher than 2.50/4.00 in the us, so why do Wes??
3. Do most school make Wes evaluation compulsory before the admission process.
I am asking these questions because the evaluation thing is not actually free and if it can be avoided to save cost.
Thanks for your clarification, in anticipation of course.

Hello Sakaslim,
When the transcript is evaluated by WES, you can tell WES to send the transcript to any school in the US to which you are applying. WES evaluated transcripts are recognized in all schools in the US. Once you evaluate your transcript with WES, you do not need to obtain any transcript from your Nigerian school again because you can use the WES evaluated transcript for schools, jobs and anywhere they require your transcripts in the US.

YES, a CGPA of 3.00 will be higher than 2.50/4 on US scale but US schools do not know about this. That is why they depend on the WES evaluated transcript or other US transcript evaluation bodies to let them know your academic standing on the US scale.

Virtually all schools require the WES evaluated transcript, no matter the grade you come out with out of your University in Nigeria.
And please make sure you do the course by course WES evaluation.

Please note that there are other Transcript evaluation bodies in the US and you can find more information about them at http://www.naces.org/members.htm

However, WES evaluation seems to be the most popular which I believe all the schools recognize. If you are using other evaluation bodies, please make sure that the schools you are applying to do recognize the body evaluating your transcript. To be on the safe side, I will suggest that you use WES. The reason is that they have been tested and trusted.

Please note that whichever evaluation body you are using, make sure you do the course by course evaluation.

Please note that there are no runs. Even if there are ways to do runs, I bet you, you will run out of the program if you come in with the mindset of doing runs because you will not be able to put in your best. Hello guys, I have had repeated questions about students who are interested in courses that have little or no funding such as Masters in Public health or MBA. There is a route that you can take to fulfill this dream. It might take a longer time but it will pay off. For example, someone is currently studying economics and would like to come for an MBA without paying out of his or her pocket. That is, that person wants a scholarship for his MBA.

My advice for individuals like this is to come in for a Masters in economics and then proceed to a Ph.D in Economics. While on your Ph.D in Economics for example, you are allowed to minor in related courses such as finance and the department of economics will pay your tuition for the finance classes you are taking. You have four years for your Ph.D, if you take 3 credits of finance classes per semester and you do this for fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, before the end of your Ph.D, you would have taken 36 credits and you only require 30 credits to obtain a masters degree in any field. That means you can complete a Masters degree before you finish your Ph.D and the University will award you your Masters degree (once you complete the 30 credits requirement) and also your Ph.D degree. I know many people who have done this. If you decide to only minor in finance and you do not want a Masters in finance, I think you only need to take about 18 credits which is on the average 6 classes in finance. I know people doing Ph.D in Economics or Agricultural Economics and obtaining a Masters in finance or Statistics. Some that don't want Masters degree took the 6 classes in order to minor in it. I know people doing Ph.D in communications and obtaining a Masters degree in Management and communications department will pay for the Masters in management because they take the classes one at a time with little or know effect on their program schedule. Similarly, someone who did biology, chemistry, microbiology or any science related course could come in directly for the science course and take classes in Public health and their primary department (biology, chemistry, microbiology or any science related course) will pay for the classes through the scholarship they have obtained. It is a longer route but a smarter way to achieve your dream without having to pay out of your pocket. So if you are interested in MBA, you can come in for Masters in the primary course you studied in your home country and when you start your Ph.D, you can do the MBA by the side.

I hope this helps.

Pls,what about someone that studied in Egypt,do I need to write TOEFL? Are the requirements the same for all countries?

I am not familiar with the educational system in Egypt. However, most Canadian schools that grant toefl exemption list the countries and schools in those country for which they grant toefl exemption. In general, for both US and Canadian universities, you can request for toefl waiver if you are from an anglophone country or you studied in a school where english was the medium of communication or expression. if you studied in a school where english was the medium of expression, you may request the school to give you a letter stating that the medium of expression is in english and submit this letter with your application for admission.

I hope this helps

Hello Jemmiee, medicine is more of a second degree in US and Canada. you need to do pre-medicine in a science related course and write MCAT before you can be considered for admission into med school. You also need to pay out of pocket for med school and it's expensive. After graduating med school, you also need to go for about 3 years residency before you can practise at all.

Hi Dafe!
I have a UG (project mgt tech) cgpa of 4.01(ECE conv. =3.23), scored 88 and 298 on iBT TOEFL and GRE respectively. I'm not too pleased wt my GRE and TOEFL score and hope to write them again, in preparation for fall 2017. I wish to apply for Business Intelligence/Analytics in US and hope to get an assistantship. What would u suggest? Should I write the standardized test again? How about getting assistantship? Do u have any professional advice as regards my intended graduate course? Meanwhile, I hope to start my masters in Nigeria very soon and I've also been offered an assistantship position here in Nigeria from the university (A fed uni of tech) I graduated from. Will my assistantship position in Nigeria aid my graduate application in US? I'm very open to ur opinions.. In addition I'm proficient in some very related softwares including oracle database and PM softwares.

Thanks.. Hope to read from u soon

Hello Phatdon4u,
As I have always said, you do not need a TOEFL to study in the US. Although there are some schools that require it but all you need to let them know is that you are from an Anglophone country and most schools waive it for you. If a school refuses to Waive TOEFL for you then I will suggest that you do not apply to that school. Your GRE score is very low. I will suggest that you re-take the GRE and aim for about 160 in quantitative and 150 in verbal. This score should make you competitive enough for an assistantship. if you need materials to prepare, you can send an email to gre.nigeria@yahoo.com
As regards our intended graduate course, I do not have any professional advice but I do advice people to apply to courses that are very very very close to what you studied in Nigeria because the admission committee will evaluate your admission eligibility based on your academic background (the courses/classes you have taken) and it is obvious that they will only consider students with closely related backgrounds. so I will suggest that you come in for a Masters in your discipline or a very very closely related discipline. After you might have entered the US and finished your Masters, you can always walk up to the program director of the new course to talk to them. by doing this, your chances of getting into the program is higher relative to when you are in Nigeria. Secondly, you US transcripts from the Masters you just completed in the US will be a good indication of your ability to the admission committee.
Pertaining to your question whether or not your Nigerian Assistantship could influence graduate Assistantship in the US, I do not think so. These are two different systems. A graduate Assistantship in Nigeria means you are in the teaching or lecturing line already but not the same in the US. I wish you all the best

Hello,

Good day Dafe, please i want to ask if a graduate with 3rd class can apply because even if one converts the 3rd class GPA to USA 4.0, it sill will be very low. But the person is going to write the GRE exam and aims to get a very high score to suffice for the low GPA. So, I want you to advise me on this, if someone with a low GPA like 3rd class with a good GRE score over 300 can still apply and given admission and tuition waiver/full funding?

Thank you Sir.

Hello Yomyjoe,
It depends on your Third class CGPA. If your CGPA is close to a 2nd class lower, you might be lucky to have a CGPA of 2.5 out of 4 when your transcript is evaluated by WES. If you do, there are some school that accept CGPA of 2.5 out of 4. However, I will suggest that you prepare very well for GRE so that you can have a good score in it. This will signal to the admission committee that you are a good student who probably have spent more time playing during the undergraduate days. Please don't attach any importance to my last statement. I am just trying to let you know how the committee might view your undergraduate result. So I will suggest you give the WES evaluation a shot and then prepare for GRE. Once you meet up with the 2.5/4 CGPA, you can now go on google to type "US universities that accept 2.5 GPA for graduate studies". Those schools will the pop up and you can start your applications. I wish you all the best.

ILRI MSc Graduate Fellowship –Evaluation of FEAST learning materials – Kenya (closing date: 15 April 2016)
Mar/2016
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit an MSc graduate fellow to work closely with ILRI researchers to design and implement an evaluation of the impact of enhanced (blended) learning materials on learning outcomes. The MSc Fellow will gain first-hand experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. S/he will work closely with ILRI/CGIAR researchers and partner universities staff to: design the evaluation; run pilot exercise; refine study design; check and analyze data; and – time permitting – participate in the writing and dissemination of the results.

ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals’ alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases. www.ilri.org

ILRI is a not-for-profit institution with a staff of about 700 and in 2016, an operating budget of about USD 83 million. A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa and in South, Southeast and East Asia. www.cgiar.org

The Position

The Feed Assessment Tool (FEAST) is a simple, participatory approach to introducing feed interventions which ensures that the right conversation takes place between feed experts and livestock keepers to develop better feeding strategies. FEAST was initially developed as collaboration between ILRI and International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)

The tool has evolved over the past 7 years and has been improved extensively through use in real situations across the developing world. The tool has attracted a lot of interest and is being used in over a dozen countries.

To enhance the effectiveness of FEAST as a method for introducing promising feed interventions, a series of training materials were produced by ILRI and partners . These materials include 12 training modules (complete with detailed lesson plans), 60 videos, 5 scenario-based interactive exercises and over 200 review and assessment questions. These materials were recently made available publically on http://learning.ilri.org/course/detail/1 and on a dedicated ‘offline player’ for regions without good internet connectivity.

We are now looking to evaluate the effectiveness of the new materials, through a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) that will compare old versus new materials, and delivered through feeds subject matter experts versus non-experts. We envisage running the trial with university partners in Kenya, but there may be opportunities to additionally test it in the field with some projects implementing FEAST as part of their overall work.

Tasks will include:

Design a methodology to test the effectiveness of the FEAST materials.
Refine study protocols.
Implement the research plan.
Quality control, data cleaning and analysis.
Based on data collected and analyzed, support the production of a report documenting the changes in knowledge, attitudes and practices of training participants.
Requirements:

Familiarity with research design and particularly the design of randomized evaluations.
Working knowledge of Stata (or other data analysis software) and Excel, Stata programming skills a plus.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
Excellent attention to detail.
Flexible, self-motivating, and able to solve unexpected problems.
Strong quantitative and data analysis skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Strong track record of delivering results
Be a current student at MSc (or equivalent degree level) in economics, social sciences, public policy, education, business administration, or other related fields.
Familiarity with aspects of livestock production, and/or agricultural systems in developing countries a plus.
Project: Evaluation of Feed Assessment Tool (FEAST) learning materials.

Duration: 4-6 months (commencing around May to July 2016)

Terms of appointment and stipend:

The successful candidate will be supervised jointly by an ILRI scientist and the fellow’s university supervisor, and will have the opportunity to interact with scientists from other universities, CGIAR centres, and NGOs, to further develop her/his research programme.

ILRI will provide the fellow a monthly stipend of US$1000 to support personal expenses. Additionally, ILRI will meet the costs of research related travel, as well as medical insurance.

Location: Kenya (Nairobi)

How to apply: Interested applicants should submit the following documents;

Curriculum Vitae including three references with contact information.
A cover letter describing the candidate’s interests in and qualifications for carrying out the research, referring to the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae as fitting, and highlighting any particularly relevant qualifications to the Director, People and Organizational Development. The position title and reference number: IDS/CDU/03/2016 should be clearly indicated in the subject line of the cover letter.
All applications to be submitted online on our recruitment portal: http://ilri.simplicant.com , by 15 April 2016.

We thank all applicants for their interest in working for ILRI. Due to the volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

I can see on your website that you guys are doing this for money and that is not what I stand for. All I care about is to help Nigerian students who are willing to study in the US and Canada for the purpose of building the Nigerian Educational system.

Do you know that you can win scholarship for scoring very high in GRE and GMAT?

@Campuslink, Why do you guys like to extort fellow Nigerians that are struggling by telling them to come for tutorials when they can study on their own. Even the website you posted the link is not up to date. For example your website still says GRE scores ranges from 200 to 800 which is basically for the old GRE.

Friends on this thread, please ignore posts from Campuslink. They are just hungry Nigerians trying to extort fellow struggling Nigerians. If you have gone through the thread and you have questions, send us an email at gre.nigeria@yahoo.com and we will answer all your questions to the best of our knowledge.

Everything GRE Nigeria does is free. we do not collect a dime neither do we tell you to make any payment into any bank account. If you need materials to prepare for GRE, we will share them with you via the dropbox so that you can have access to the best and up-to-date materials that will make the exam easy for you. All you need is to just send GRE Nigeria an email requesting for materials at gre.nigeria@yahoo.com

The goal of GRE Nigeria is to help provide information for studying in North America (US and Canada) so that for those that want to work in academia could have access to world-class education and go back to help our struggling educational system.

Also for those of us that have friends, please let us share these opportunities with them so that we all together can contribute our little quota to make Nigeria a better place.

God bless you and God bless The Federal Republic of Nigeria.

naijamark:
Thank you for your timely advice. I've been having difficulty getting a supervisor for a research degree, I am therefore considering going for master by coursework. Does this affect my chances of a PhD later on?

Hello Naijamark, The US and Canadian system is very different from the UK system which Nigeria follows. You will always take classes whether you come in for Masters or you go directly for a Ph.D. However, there are programs where you can actually go directly from an undergraduate directly to a Ph.D. For example, you can do that if you are a Chemistry major. My best advice is that you go for a Masters and then a Ph.D because it is always good to adjust to the system before going for a Ph.D because coming in for a Ph.D might be very tedious because your first year is always very intensive and rigorous followed by a qualifying exam which if you fail after one or two attempts could make them kick you out of the program. So you are better positioned for the challenges you might face in the Ph.D program when you go through a masters program first.

I hope this helps
