PoliticsConsensus Dispute Hit ADC As Atiku, Amaechi, Hayatu-deen Fail To Reach Agreement by DailyGistsNg(op): 2:08pm On May 18
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has postponed its presidential screening exercise from Monday to Wednesday, amid reported disagreements among party stakeholders over the emergence of a consensus candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election. According to reports by Sahara Reporters, sources within the party said consultations are still ongoing as key leaders attempt to build agreement around a preferred presidential candidate. Party insiders reportedly identified three leading contenders at the centre of the discussions: Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku Abubakar, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. A source familiar with the matter reportedly said the postponement was intended to allow more time for negotiations and to prevent internal divisions ahead of the party’s presidential primary. “The ADC presidential screening exercise has been shifted from Monday to Wednesday,” the source was quoted as saying, adding that party leaders had not yet reached an agreement on a consensus candidate among the leading aspirants. The development has also raised uncertainty over the party’s presidential primary election currently scheduled for May 25, with insiders citing logistical and financial concerns alongside disagreements over the consensus process. However, these claims remain unverified by the party leadership. Another source alleged that disagreements over the consensus arrangement had complicated preparations for the primaries, though no official response has been issued by the party regarding the claims. The postponement follows an earlier adjustment announced by the ADC on Saturday, when the party moved its screening exercise for presidential and governorship aspirants to Monday, May 18, 2026. In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC also stated that screening for some federal legislative aspirants in parts of Northern Nigeria would be conducted in Abuja due to security concerns. The party assured affected aspirants that revised schedules and necessary details would be communicated directly. Earlier, the ADC unveiled its timetable for the 2027 primary elections and approved nomination fees for elective offices. According to the schedule, the sale of nomination forms was fixed between May 5 and May 10, while completed forms were to be submitted between May 11 and May 13. The party initially planned to conduct screening exercises from May 14 to May 15, with results expected on May 17. Appeals were scheduled for May 18 and May 19, while the final list of cleared aspirants was expected on May 20. Under the timetable, primaries for State Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senate seats are expected to begin on May 21, followed by governorship primaries on May 22. The presidential primary remains scheduled for May 25, pending any further adjustments. The ADC also approved nomination fees for aspirants seeking elective offices, with the presidential form priced at ₦100 million, governorship at ₦50 million, Senate at ₦20 million, House of Representatives at ₦10 million, and State House of Assembly at ₦3 million. Political observers note that how the ADC manages its internal negotiations in the coming days may influence party unity and shape its positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

PoliticsParty Leaders Flee As Thugs Disrupt APC Primary Election Result Announcement In by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:36am On May 18
The collation and announcement of results from the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary elections in Ondo State were disrupted on Sunday after suspected political thugs reportedly stormed the party’s state secretariat in Akure. The incident, which occurred at the APC secretariat in the Ondo State capital, temporarily halted proceedings as tensions escalated during the result collation exercise following Saturday’s primary elections. According to reports, the individuals involved were suspected to be loyalists of some disqualified aspirants contesting for House of Representatives tickets under the APC platform. However, these allegations have not been independently verified. As the situation became tense, the APC chairman in Ondo State, Kolawole Babatunde, alongside party executives, electoral officials, delegates, and supporters, reportedly exited the premises through a back entrance for safety reasons. Security operatives at the venue also evacuated members of the seven-man National Assembly Primary Election Committee led by Hon. Iboroma Harry Dabibi, amid concerns that the disruption could escalate into violence. Eyewitnesses alleged that the suspected thugs entered the secretariat and demanded an immediate suspension of the results announcement. One source, quoted by Channels Television , alleged that a disqualified aspirant may have mobilised supporters to disrupt the process, contributing to heightened tensions at the venue. “It was a disqualified aspirant who allegedly mobilised the thugs to the venue, and the atmosphere suddenly became tense, with many people leaving to avoid a possible breakdown of law and order,” the source reportedly said. Another eyewitness claimed the disruption occurred shortly before the announcement of results for one of the federal constituencies, alleging that an instruction to halt the process was communicated during the exercise. However, the source did not provide verifiable evidence regarding the origin of the directive. The APC leadership in Ondo State had not officially commented on the incident as of the time of reporting. Nevertheless, the chairman of the election committee reportedly released the final results of the primary elections in the early hours of Monday. The disruption underscores growing concerns about internal party tensions and the security of political processes during party primaries, particularly as political parties intensify preparations ahead of future elections.

PoliticsKebbi Senator Defects From APC Ahead Of Primary Election by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:13am On May 18
The senator representing Kebbi South Senatorial District, Garba Musa Maidoki, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing unresolved internal disputes within the party. Maidoki disclosed his decision in a resignation letter dated May 14, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman of Rafin Zuru Ward in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State. In the letter, the lawmaker said persistent crises within the ruling party had negatively affected his political aspirations and influenced his decision to withdraw his membership. “This is to inform you, the chairman of APC Rafin Zuru Ward, that I have withdrawn my membership card as a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC),” Maidoki stated. He added that his resignation was motivated by “serious and continuous crisis” within the party, which he said had become a source of concern regarding his political ambition. Maidoki’s exit comes ahead of the APC’s scheduled primaries as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections, a period expected to shape political alignments across the country. In a related development, two notable APC senatorial aspirants in Kebbi State — Bala Ibn Na’Allah and Sani M. Kabiru — have also withdrawn from the party’s senatorial primary elections slated for May 18, 2026. Na’Allah, a former senator for Kebbi South, announced his withdrawal in a letter addressed to the APC State Chairman in Birnin Kebbi. He said his decision followed what he described as “credible information” regarding the party’s disposition toward the primary process, alleging that directives from higher authorities had influenced developments. Similarly, Kabiru, popularly known as Kabiru Sani Giant, withdrew from the APC senatorial primary race for Kebbi Central Senatorial District. In his resignation letter, he attributed the decision to “personal, political, and strategic factors.” Despite stepping down from the race, Kabiru clarified that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an exit from the APC, expressing appreciation to party leaders, campaign team members, and supporters for their continued encouragement. The recent resignations and withdrawals may signal growing internal tensions within the APC in Kebbi State, particularly as the party prepares for a competitive political season ahead of the 2027 elections.

PoliticsAPC Disqualifies Wole Oke From Reps Primary After 24 Years As Federal Lawmaker by DailyGistsNg(op): 2:57pm On May 14
APC Disqualifies Wole Oke, Stops Seventh-Term Rep Bid

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Screening Committee has disqualified Wole Oke from participating in the party’s primary election for the Obokun-Oriade Federal Constituency.

The committee disqualified Oke when he appeared before it on Wednesday in Abuja.

Oke has been representing the people of Obokun-Oriade in Osun State in the House of Representatives for 24 unbroken years, making him one of the very few National Assembly landlords like Senator Ali Ndume.

However, Oke’s seventh-term consecutive attempt at being a federal lawmaker was truncated on Wednesday, according to sources privy to the matter.

His disqualification was not unconnected to zoning as some of the screening committee members felt that Oriade, and not Obokun, where Oke Hails from, should produce the party’s next candidate for the federal constituency seat.

Oke, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the APC last year and was recently named the Director General of the APC campaign team for the August 15, 2026, governorship poll in Osun State.

In the poll, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, among other contenders, will be challenging Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, who is seeking re-election.

EducationUTME Waiver For NCE, ND Students Will Increase Admissions – Alausa by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:54am On May 13
The Federal Government has said its new admission policy removing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination requirement for candidates seeking admission into colleges of education and some National Diploma agriculture programmes could increase tertiary institution admissions by about 1.5 million. Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a television interview on Tuesday, explaining that the reform was designed to expand access to higher education and reduce barriers preventing qualified students from gaining admission. The minister had earlier announced during the 2026 admission policy meeting that candidates applying to colleges of education would no longer be required to sit for the UTME. Under the new arrangement, applicants with at least four credit passes in relevant subjects can apply directly for admission. However, such candidates will still register with JAMB, while their credentials and examination results will be screened through the Central Admissions Processing System before admission letters are issued. Alausa explained that the government also reviewed long-standing ordinary level admission requirements after discovering that some conditions were unnecessary for certain fields of study. Previously, candidates seeking admission into universities and colleges of education were required to obtain five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. According to the revised policy, candidates applying for courses in Law, Arts and Social Sciences only need a credit pass in English Language, while applicants for Science and Engineering programmes only require a credit pass in Mathematics. The minister said earlier reforms had already produced a significant increase in admissions nationwide. He noted that although between 2.1 million and 2.2 million candidates sit for the UTME annually, only about 770,000 previously secured admission, leaving a large number without placement. According to him, after the review of admission requirements, the number of admitted students increased from roughly 770,000 to 1.1 million within one year, creating opportunities for nearly 400,000 additional students. Alausa added that the latest policy removing UTME requirements for colleges of education and selected agriculture-related ND programmes is expected to further expand access to tertiary education across the country. He said the reform is aimed at removing unnecessary barriers for qualified candidates while boosting enrolment in key sectors such as teacher education and agriculture.

Politics‘uzodimma Remains Chairman’ – Uba Sani Speaks On Rift Between APC Governors by DailyGistsNg(op): 2:52pm On May 12
Governor Uba Sani has dismissed reports of a major crisis within the Progressive Governors’ Forum, describing the disagreement among members as a “slight misunderstanding” that has already been resolved. Speaking on Politics Today on Monday, the Kaduna State governor denied claims that Hope Uzodimma had been removed as chairman of the forum. Reports had emerged last week suggesting that Uzodimma was replaced by Peter Mbah after a tense meeting in Abuja, with speculation that the forum had split into rival camps. The reports further claimed that one bloc was aligned with Dapo Abiodun and Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, while another remained loyal to Uzodimma. However, governors backing Uzodimma later passed a vote of confidence in him during a meeting at the Imo State Lodge in Abuja, while President Bola Tinubu was said to have intervened in the matter. Addressing the controversy, Sani, who serves as vice-chairman of the forum, insisted that no leadership change had taken place. “At the moment, there’s no problem. All the governors are together. His Excellency Hope Uzodimma is the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum,” he said. “My humble self, Senator Uba Sani, is the vice chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.” The governor stated that disagreements among political actors are normal in a democratic setting and should not be exaggerated into a major crisis. “In my own opinion, I don’t think it’s a serious issue, like many people try to make it look like it’s a very serious issue,” he said. “Because, you know, in everything we are talking about democracy, people can choose to disagree and agree. So, in my own opinion, it was just a slight misunderstanding.” Sani assured party supporters that the issue had been settled and dismissed suggestions of an ongoing division within the forum. “I don’t think you will hear anything again. I can assure you, you can’t hear anything again,” he stated. “It’s just a slight disagreement, not a serious issue, but a slight disagreement. But it has been resolved.” He also noted that if there had truly been a leadership change, he would have automatically assumed office as chairman in his capacity as vice-chairman of the forum. “And of course, if there’s any change of leadership, sitting here as the vice chairman, I could have taken over,” he added. “But I can tell you, I was there. And I was the one who made that statement clear that we are united. Everything is okay.”

CrimePanic As Suspected Cultists Kill Eight In Benue Community by DailyGistsNg(op): 11:25am On May 12
At least eight persons were reportedly killed in a suspected cult-related attack in the Aliade Street area of Makurdi during the early hours of Monday, sparking fear and tension among residents. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers arrived around 2 a.m. on motorcycles and invaded a residential compound while many occupants were asleep. Residents alleged that the gunmen dragged some victims out before opening fire on them. Community sources said four people died instantly during the initial assault, while additional casualties were recorded after neighbours who responded to the sound of gunshots were also attacked. One resident, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, described the incident as chaotic, saying the assailants appeared highly coordinated and fled immediately after carrying out the attack. The violence forced many residents to remain indoors over fears of possible reprisal attacks or renewed violence. Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Makurdi Local Government Area, Joseph Keffi, linked the killings to suspected cult clashes. According to Keffi, preliminary investigations suggested that the violence may have stemmed from a dispute between rival cult groups. He added that some innocent residents were caught in the attack because they allegedly sheltered an individual connected to the conflict. The council chairman also disclosed that security agencies had been deployed to track down those responsible, adding that a suspected cult leader linked to several violent incidents in Makurdi had already been identified, although the suspect was reportedly outside Benue State when the attack occurred. The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Ifeanyi Emenari, also confirmed the incident. However, he cautioned that casualty figures circulating publicly may differ from official police records. Emenari said the police command would issue a detailed statement after completing investigations and verification of the casualties. Security personnel reportedly cordoned off the area shortly after the attack, while the victims’ bodies were evacuated to different morgues within Makurdi. The latest incident has renewed concerns over recurring cult-related violence in parts of Benue State, with residents urging security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and intensify efforts to curb criminal activities in the area.

PoliticsTinubu Govt Seeks Fresh $1.25 Billion World Bank Loan by DailyGistsNg(op): 9:38am On May 12
Nigeria is reportedly in advanced talks with the World Bank over a fresh $1.25 billion loan facility aimed at supporting economic reforms, investment growth and job creation under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to documents linked to the proposed programme titled Nigeria Actions for Investment and Jobs Acceleration, the facility is expected to support reforms in critical sectors of the economy, including access to finance, electricity, digital services, agriculture, taxation and trade. Reports indicate that negotiations have progressed to an advanced stage, with the proposal expected to be presented to the World Bank Board of Executive Directors for approval on June 26, 2026. If approved, the facility would become one of Nigeria’s largest recent borrowings from the World Bank, behind the $1.5 billion Reforms for Economic Stabilisation to Enable Transformation Development Policy Financing approved in June 2024. The Federal Ministry of Finance is expected to serve as the implementing agency for the programme. Focus On Economic Reforms And Investment The World Bank document reportedly stated that the proposed funding is designed to support the Federal Government’s reform agenda by improving competitiveness and expanding access to critical services. The lender explained that the programme aims to: expand access to finance, improve electricity and digital infrastructure, strengthen trade and tax reforms, support agricultural productivity, and encourage private sector investment and job creation. The document also noted that the project had already passed key internal assessments and was moving toward final approval. Concerns Over Rising Debt Burden The fresh loan discussions come amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s increasing debt profile and dependence on external financing. Nigeria’s external debt reportedly stood at about $51.86 billion as of December 31, 2025, while total public debt has risen to approximately $110.97 billion. Between June 2023 and May 2026, the World Bank approved an estimated $9.35 billion in loans and credits for Nigeria across sectors such as: power, healthcare, education, agriculture, renewable energy, social protection, and support for small and medium-sized businesses. Some of the major approvals during the period include: the $2.25 billion RESET and ARMOR reform financing package approved in June 2024, the $1.57 billion HOPE and SPIN programmes approved in September 2024, and the $1.08 billion education and resilience support package approved in March 2025. Federal Government Pushes For Faster Disbursement The development also comes shortly after the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, warned that Nigeria could reconsider future World Bank loans if approval and disbursement delays continue beyond six months. According to reports, Ogunjimi stressed that since the facilities are repayable loans and not grants, the disbursement process must align with Nigeria’s fiscal planning and project execution timelines. He reportedly urged the World Bank to speed up approvals and release of funds to avoid disruptions to national development projects and economic reform plans.

PoliticsCourt Dismisses Fubara Dagogo’s Suit Against APC National Congress by DailyGistsNg(op): 12:58pm On May 11
The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Fubara Dagogo seeking to nullify the recently conducted national congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case because it concerned the internal affairs of a political party. The judge held that matters relating to nomination of candidates, purchase of nomination forms and party congress procedures are non-justiciable and therefore outside the powers of the court to determine. Justice Abdulmalik subsequently struck out the suit and awarded ₦10 million each against Dagogo and his lawyer, Ogochukwu Onyema, bringing the total cost awarded in favour of the defendants to ₦20 million. Dagogo, who contested for the position of National Vice Chairman (South-South) during the APC national congress, had challenged what he described as his unlawful exclusion from the party’s convention process. In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/591/2026, he asked the court to void any congress conducted for the South-South vice chairmanship position without his participation. The defendants in the matter included the APC, its National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, National Vice Chairman (South-South) Victor Giadom and National Organising Secretary Sulaiman Muitamma. Dagogo also sought ₦100 million in damages over alleged embarrassment and mental distress arising from the party’s refusal to issue him nomination forms despite payment. However, the APC, through its counsel Kayode Okunade, argued that the matter related strictly to the domestic affairs of the party and that the plaintiff had failed to exhaust internal dispute resolution channels before approaching the court. The party also contended that Dagogo lacked the legal standing to institute the suit because he had not been formally recognised as a valid aspirant under the APC constitution and guidelines. Politics‘we Were Asked Not To Disclose Boko Haram, ISWAP Attacks Because Of Tinubu’ – Mi by DailyGistsNg(op): 12:34pm On May 11
Fresh revelations have emerged following the deadly attacks by Boko Haram on two military formations in Yobe State, with military sources alleging that senior army authorities have launched a crackdown on personnel suspected of leaking details of operational failures to the media. According to reports by Sahara Reporters , the move followed reports that at least 36 soldiers and mobile police officers were killed during coordinated attacks in Gujba Local Government Area. The attacks reportedly occurred around 1 a.m. between Thursday night and Friday morning when insurgents stormed the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari. Both communities are located in the hometown of Mai Mala Buni. Military sources quoted in the report claimed that the publication of the incident triggered anger among top security officials in Abuja. One source alleged that a military commander received a call shortly after the story appeared in the media. “The commander said the call came from the office of Nuhu Ribadu,” the source claimed, adding that officials were upset that details of the attack became public so quickly. The sources further alleged that military commanders were instructed to suppress information relating to attacks by Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram ahead of the 2027 elections. According to one of the sources, officials allegedly argued that public reports of repeated attacks were damaging the image of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the military. Another source also alleged that soldiers were warned against communicating with journalists, claiming that severe punishment awaited anyone caught leaking operational information. Sahara Reporters had earlier stated that dozens of security personnel were killed during the simultaneous attacks on the two military facilities. One surviving soldier reportedly said the insurgents attacked both camps during the midnight assault, while another described the incident as one of the deadliest recent attacks on troops in the area. Military sources cited in the report claimed that the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi suffered the heaviest casualties, including 17 mobile police officers undergoing training, alongside 10 soldiers attached to the programme and six permanently deployed troops. As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official public response from the Nigerian military or the Office of the National Security Adviser regarding the allegations of a media crackdown.

PoliticsIPOB Declares May 30, 2026 As Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day by DailyGistsNg(op): 9:51am On May 11
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced plans to observe May 30, 2026, as Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, describing it as a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering individuals who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War and subsequent pro-Biafra struggles. In a statement issued by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group said the annual observance is intended to honour what it described as the sacrifices made by Biafran soldiers, civilians, and supporters during the 1967–1970 civil war. According to the statement, IPOB views the remembrance as “a sacred covenant with the fallen,” rather than a political exercise. The group reflected on the hardships experienced during the war, including hunger, displacement, military conflict, and civilian casualties. The statement also referenced the role of foreign powers during the civil war, alleging that Nigeria received diplomatic and military support from countries including the United Kingdom and the former Soviet Union. Historians and public records have documented international involvement on different sides during the conflict, which remains one of the most debated periods in Nigeria’s history. IPOB paid tribute to Biafran soldiers, scientists, mothers, and civilians affected by the war, while also remembering individuals killed during pro-Biafra remembrance activities in Nkpor and Onitsha in May 2016. The group described them as martyrs whose deaths should not be forgotten. As part of the planned observance, IPOB called for a sit-at-home across parts of the South-East and other areas it identifies as Biafraland. The group urged residents to dedicate the day to reflection, mourning, and prayer, while avoiding commercial and social activities. The organization also appealed to governors in the South-East and neighbouring regions to lower Nigerian flags to half-mast in honour of those who died during the civil war and related conflicts. IPOB reiterated its position that remembering the victims of war and violence is essential to preserving historical memory and acknowledging the human cost of conflict. The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, lasted from 1967 to 1970 and resulted in significant military and civilian casualties, with historians estimating that millions of people, many from starvation and disease, were affected during the conflict. PoliticsWe Now Have Two Presidents In Nigeria – Agbedi Blasts Wike Over PDP Threats by DailyGistsNg(op): 3:01pm On May 07
Fred Agbedi has criticised Nyesom Wike over his threat to shut down any building used as a secretariat by the rival Peoples Democratic Party faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Agbedi questioned Wike’s authority to threaten banks and private property owners over the PDP leadership dispute. The lawmaker representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in Bayelsa State described the FCT minister as a “busybody,” insisting that the issue has nothing to do with his official responsibilities as a minister. Agbedi said, “What makes Wike, as a minister of the Federal Republic, now threaten banks and threaten people that he would demolish property?” He further argued that such remarks create the impression that there are parallel centres of authority in the country. According to him, “This means we have two presidents and two laws in this nation.” The controversy followed Wike’s warning that any bank allowing the Turaki-led PDP faction to open accounts for activities such as the sale of nomination forms would face consequences. Wike had also threatened to seal or demolish any property used by the faction as a PDP national headquarters in Abuja. Reacting to the ongoing leadership crisis in the PDP, Agbedi advised those dissatisfied with the Supreme Court ruling to return to court rather than intimidate Nigerians or issue threats using public office.

PoliticsSenate Reverses Standing Order Amendments, Opens Up Presidency Race by DailyGistsNg(op): 2:36pm On May 07
The Nigerian Senate has reversed its recent amendment to the Senate Standing Orders, reopening the contest for key leadership positions ahead of the 2027 political cycle. The decision effectively restores the previous eligibility rules for offices such as Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Senate Leader and other principal positions in the 11th National Assembly. Earlier in the week, the Senate had amended its rules to restrict eligibility for top leadership positions to lawmakers with at least eight years of continuous service in the chamber. The amendment also required senators seeking principal offices to have served two consecutive terms immediately before nomination. Under those revised rules, politicians such as Hope Uzodimma, Adams Oshiomhole and other ranking figures considering Senate leadership ambitions in 2027 could have faced major obstacles depending on their legislative records. The amendment had also outlined a strict ranking order for nominations, giving priority to former Senate Presidents, former Deputy Senate Presidents, former principal officers and ranking lawmakers before first-term senators could be considered. However, lawmakers later expressed concerns that the changes could create constitutional disputes and internal tensions within the Senate. According to senators involved in the deliberation, the Standing Orders must remain consistent with the Nigerian Constitution and democratic legislative traditions. By rescinding the amendment, the Senate has now restored the earlier arrangement under which any ranking senator with at least four years of legislative experience in the National Assembly could contest for presiding offices. The reversal is expected to intensify early political calculations and competition for Senate leadership positions ahead of the 2027 elections.

PoliticsFormer Taraba Governor Dumps APC by DailyGistsNg(op): 9:56am On May 07
Former Taraba State governor, Jolly Nyame, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, citing what he described as prolonged political marginalisation and unfair treatment of his supporters within the party. Nyame announced his decision after a meeting with political associates and supporters following proceedings at the Federal High Court in Jalingo. According to the former governor, consultations were held with stakeholders from Zing Local Government Area before the final decision was reached. He explained that his next political steps would focus on collaborating with individuals and groups committed to improving development and strengthening political representation for his community. Nyame said years of loyalty to the APC had not translated into meaningful inclusion or political recognition for the people he represents. He argued that his community had continued to experience neglect in both political appointments and broader governance matters. He also referenced his leadership role within the Yorro community, which includes the Mumuye, Yandan and Yorti groups, stating that disregard for the interests and contributions of the area contributed to his growing dissatisfaction with the party. According to him, many people in the community believe they have remained politically sidelined and excluded from key decision-making processes over the years. The former governor further disclosed that supporters had been urging him to contest in the 2027 general elections. However, he noted that pursuing another elective office was not a personal priority at his age, stressing instead that the pressure from supporters reflected deeper frustrations over what they perceive as years of inadequate representation. Nyame warned that continued neglect of the concerns raised by his community could worsen political discontent, urging his supporters to remain united as efforts continue toward securing what he described as fair treatment and stronger political inclusion. Politics‘baseless, Malicious, Politically Motivated’ – Osun Govt Rejects Fraud Allegatio by DailyGistsNg(op): 11:48am On May 06
The Osun State Government has rejected allegations of multi-billion naira infrastructure fraud and diversion of public funds involving officials of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the claims—reportedly contained in a petition by the Osun Youths Initiative for Good Governance—as “baseless, malicious and politically motivated.” The petition had accused the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Kazeem Akinleye, and the Accountant-General, Rasheed Olalere Alabi, of diverting funds received from the Federal Government without legislative approval. However, the state government firmly denied the allegations, maintaining that no public funds were misappropriated. “Let it be stated in the clearest possible terms that the allegations of ‘multi-billion naira infrastructure fraud,’ ‘mismanagement of public funds,’ ‘impropriety in project execution,’ and the claim of ‘diverting sundry monies… without legislative approval’ are entirely unfounded and lacking in substance,” the statement said. Alimi further clarified that the office of the Chief of Staff does not have statutory authority over public funds, noting that it is neither the custodian of the state treasury nor responsible for authorising disbursements. He also defended the role of the Accountant-General, stating that all financial operations are conducted in line with established regulations, including appropriation laws, treasury guidelines, and due authorisation procedures. Transparency Claims and External Validation The government reiterated its commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility, citing independent assessments as evidence of its performance. According to the statement, Osun State achieved a 100 per cent score in a recent evaluation by BudgIT under its Fiscal Transparency League Table, placing the state among top performers in public accountability. Reaction to Inclusion of Private Individuals The statement also criticised the reported inclusion of prominent individuals, including Deji Adeleke and Dupe Adeleke-Sanni, in the petition. Alimi emphasised that both individuals are private citizens with no official role in the state government, describing their mention as “reckless, defamatory and legally actionable.” Government Urges Public Caution The Osun State Government called on the public, media organisations, and relevant institutions to disregard the allegations, framing them as part of a broader attempt to discredit the administration. It maintained that such claims would not derail ongoing efforts focused on infrastructure development, transparent governance, and service delivery.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Pressure Mounts On Todd Boehly As Chelsea Fans Plan Protests After Forest Defeat by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:56am On May 06
Pressure is mounting on Todd Boehly as dissatisfaction among Chelsea FC supporters intensifies following a disappointing season that has fallen short of expectations. The club’s 3–1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday effectively ended its hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League—a benchmark widely viewed as the minimum objective for the campaign. Instead, Chelsea now risks finishing outside the top five despite significant financial investment since the ownership transition. According to BBC Sport, the result has heightened tensions among supporters, with criticism increasingly directed at the club’s ownership structure under BlueCo, led by Boehly in partnership with Clearlake Capital. Fan groups have begun organising protests ahead of the FA Cup Final against Manchester City, with further demonstrations expected during the club’s final home fixture of the season. Supporters have cited frequent managerial turnover and a perceived lack of long-term direction as key concerns. The ongoing search for a permanent head coach following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior has added to uncertainty around the club’s sporting strategy. Financial performance has also drawn scrutiny. The club recently reported a pre-tax loss of £262 million, while continued oversight from UEFA under an existing settlement agreement has placed further attention on Chelsea’s spending and compliance framework. Fan advocacy group Not A Project CFC has argued that the club’s identity is being eroded by what it describes as an overly experimental approach to squad building and management. Additional concerns around ticketing policies and perceived lack of on-pitch commitment have further strained relations between supporters and ownership. While victory in the FA Cup final could offer short-term relief, many fans are calling for structural stability, clearer communication, and a defined long-term vision to restore the club’s competitiveness. The coming months are likely to prove decisive for both Chelsea’s sporting direction and its relationship with its fanbase.

PoliticsTinubu May Not Get Up To 3 Million Votes In A Free And Fair Election – Dele Momo by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:49am On May 06
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has expressed uncertainty over whether leading opposition figures can maintain the level of voter support they recorded in the 2023 presidential election ahead of the 2027 polls. Speaking during a programme on Channels Television, Momodu argued that Nigeria’s political landscape has evolved significantly, making it unreliable to project future outcomes based on past electoral performance. He specifically referenced key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, noting that shifting voter sentiment and changing political dynamics could affect their ability to retain previous support bases. According to him, electoral outcomes in 2027 will likely reflect current realities rather than historical voting patterns, warning against overreliance on data from the last election cycle. Momodu also suggested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could face a more competitive contest if the next election is conducted under conditions widely perceived as transparent and credible. He said: “How are you sure that Atiku will retain all those who voted for him the last time? What is the guarantee that Obi and Kwankwaso are the only people who will retain all those who voted for them the last time? The situation has changed.” Momodu added that under a strictly free and fair electoral process, the eventual outcome of the presidential race could differ significantly from current expectations, underscoring the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political environment.

PoliticsDangote Refinery Increases Petrol Price by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:33am On May 06
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased its ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, by ₦75, raising the rate to approximately ₦1,350 per litre from ₦1,275. The adjustment follows an earlier price revision in April 2026, when the refinery increased its ex-depot rate to ₦1,275 per litre in response to changing global oil market conditions. Rising Prices Reflect Market Realities The latest increase comes as petrol prices continue to trend upward across Nigeria, with retail prices in some locations approaching ₦1,400 per litre. Industry analysts link the sustained rise to a combination of: Higher global crude oil prices Foreign exchange constraints Supply and distribution challenges These factors have continued to shape pricing dynamics in Nigeria’s deregulated downstream petroleum sector. Confirmation of the price adjustment was provided by a senior official of the refinery, as well as market data from Petroleumprice.ng. Government Reaffirms Market-Driven Policy Meanwhile, the Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to a market-based pricing regime. Speaking in Paris during an investor engagement involving Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, ruled out any return to fuel subsidy. “We will not bring back fuel subsidy because it creates distortions for the economy,” Oyedele stated. He also dismissed the possibility of price controls, emphasising that the government intends to allow market forces to determine fuel pricing. Broader Economic Implications The continued rise in petrol prices has significant implications for inflation, transportation costs, and overall cost of living. However, policymakers argue that deregulation is necessary to ensure long-term efficiency, attract investment, and eliminate fiscal burdens associated with subsidies.

PoliticsPeter Obi Is Our Party – Fayose Declares Unshakable Loyalty Amidst Defection Dra by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:14am On May 05
Nigerian businessman Isaac Fayose has publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to presidential aspirant Peter Obi, stating that his support remains unwavering regardless of any future political party affiliations. Fayose made the declaration in a video shared via his official Facebook page on Monday, responding to growing criticism surrounding Obi’s reported move to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC). Political Realignments Spark Reactions The comments follow reports that Obi, alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to align with the NDC ahead of the 2027 political cycle. The development has drawn criticism, particularly from members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who accused the politicians of frequent party switching. Fayose Defends Obi, Questions APC Criticism Addressing the backlash, Fayose dismissed the criticism and framed Obi’s support base as personality-driven rather than party-dependent. “Anywhere Peter Obi decides to go, we will follow him because we believe in him,” he said. He further argued that political migration is not unusual in Nigeria’s democratic landscape, referencing the political history of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has been affiliated with multiple parties over time. Fayose also questioned the ruling party’s focus on opposition movements, despite its electoral dominance. “If the APC is sure of victory, why are its members interfering in other parties?” he asked. Broader Implications Fayose’s remarks highlight an ongoing trend in Nigerian politics where individual political figures command strong personal followings that can transcend party structures. Analysts note that such dynamics could influence coalition-building and voter alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

PoliticsGombe Gov, Inuwa Blocks Goje From Senate, Endorses Gwamna As Apc’s Consensus Can by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:11am On May 04
Governor Inuwa Yahaya has endorsed Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 general elections, a move that effectively sidelines Senator Danjuma Goje from securing another Senate ticket. The decision was announced during a stakeholders’ meeting of the party, reflecting ongoing internal alignments within the APC in the state. The development comes against the backdrop of a prolonged political rivalry between Yahaya and Goje, which intensified following the 2023 elections. As part of the consensus arrangement, the party also outlined preferred candidates for key legislative positions. For the Senate, Mohammed Ahmadu Deba was selected for Gombe Central, Jerry Damara for Gombe South, while Yahaya himself is projected to contest the Gombe North senatorial seat. In the House of Representatives category, the endorsed candidates include Usman Bello Kumo (Akko), Inuwa Garba (Yamaltu/Deba), Ali Isa (Balanga/Billiri), Fatima Binta Bello (Kaltungo/Shongom), Saddam Bello (Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye), and Jamilu Shabewa (Dukku/Nafada). Senator Goje, who has served four terms in the Senate and is seeking re-election, was recently part of a delegation that met President Bola Tinubu to reportedly request automatic tickets for incumbent lawmakers. However, the proposal was not approved, according to party sources. Separately, Goje has dismissed claims that he defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing a membership card circulating online as fake. In a statement issued by his aide, Ahmed Isa Kashere, the senator reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and described the reports as an attempt to damage his political reputation. The evolving situation underscores shifting alliances within the APC in Gombe State as the party positions itself ahead of the 2027 elections.

TravelUS Resumes Visa Processing For Nigerian, Foreign Doctors by DailyGistsNg(op): 10:01am On May 04
The United States has resumed visa and immigration processing for foreign-trained doctors, including Nigerians, following a policy adjustment that reverses earlier restrictions linked to travel ban-related measures. The update, first reported by The New York Times, allows affected physicians to proceed with applications for visa extensions, work permits, and permanent residency (green cards), which had previously faced delays. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirmed that medical professionals are now exempt from the earlier restrictions. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that “applications associated with medical physicians will continue processing.” The earlier policy, introduced in January, reportedly paused decisions on certain immigration applications involving nationals from about 39 countries. This created uncertainty for many foreign-trained doctors, some of whom were placed on administrative leave or faced potential job losses due to delays in immigration approvals. Healthcare providers across the United States had raised concerns about the policy’s impact, particularly in underserved areas that rely heavily on international medical graduates. According to available estimates, foreign-trained physicians make up roughly a quarter of the US medical workforce, often filling critical gaps in primary care and rural healthcare systems. The policy reversal comes amid ongoing workforce shortages in the US healthcare sector. Authorities estimate a current shortfall of approximately 65,000 doctors, a gap projected to widen in the coming years. Analysts say the decision is likely to ease staffing pressures on hospitals and provide greater stability for affected doctors, allowing them to maintain employment while their immigration applications are processed. For Nigerian and other foreign physicians, the development restores a clearer pathway to renew legal status and continue practicing without the uncertainty caused by the earlier processing freeze.

PoliticsHouse of Reps member, Leke Abejide dumps ADC, prepares move to join APC (vid) by DailyGistsNg(op): 6:25pm On May 01

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxEjZfQMPoI
A two-term member of the House of Representatives, Leke Abejide, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring his intention to join what he described as a “mainstream political party” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on his next political steps, Abejide said the party he is heading to would be made public once he completes the process of securing a ticket for the upcoming polls.

“I am moving to the mainstream political party,” he stated, adding that the move represents “a homecoming.”

Although he stopped short of naming the party, his comments have fuelled strong indications that he is set to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s ruling party.

The lawmaker also took a swipe at opposition elements, alleging that they are contributing to insecurity and other crises across the country, a claim likely to stir political debate in the months ahead.

Abejide’s defection comes amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape as key actors position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
