The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, has denied reports claiming he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over an alleged ₦500 billion fraud investigation. The Federal Government has said its new admission policy removing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination requirement for candidates seeking admission into colleges of education and some National Diploma agriculture programmes could increase tertiary institution admissions by about 1.5 million. Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a television interview on Tuesday, explaining that the reform was designed to expand access to higher education and reduce barriers preventing qualified students from gaining admission. The minister had earlier announced during the 2026 admission policy meeting that candidates applying to colleges of education would no longer be required to sit for the UTME. Under the new arrangement, applicants with at least four credit passes in relevant subjects can apply directly for admission. However, such candidates will still register with JAMB, while their credentials and examination results will be screened through the Central Admissions Processing System before admission letters are issued. Alausa explained that the government also reviewed long-standing ordinary level admission requirements after discovering that some conditions were unnecessary for certain fields of study. Previously, candidates seeking admission into universities and colleges of education were required to obtain five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. According to the revised policy, candidates applying for courses in Law, Arts and Social Sciences only need a credit pass in English Language, while applicants for Science and Engineering programmes only require a credit pass in Mathematics. The minister said earlier reforms had already produced a significant increase in admissions nationwide. He noted that although between 2.1 million and 2.2 million candidates sit for the UTME annually, only about 770,000 previously secured admission, leaving a large number without placement. According to him, after the review of admission requirements, the number of admitted students increased from roughly 770,000 to 1.1 million within one year, creating opportunities for nearly 400,000 additional students. Alausa added that the latest policy removing UTME requirements for colleges of education and selected agriculture-related ND programmes is expected to further expand access to tertiary education across the country. He said the reform is aimed at removing unnecessary barriers for qualified candidates while boosting enrolment in key sectors such as teacher education and agriculture.

Addressing the controversy, Sani, who serves as vice-chairman of the forum, insisted that no leadership change had taken place. “At the moment, there’s no problem. All the governors are together. His Excellency Hope Uzodimma is the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum,” he said. “My humble self, Senator Uba Sani, is the vice chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.” The governor stated that disagreements among political actors are normal in a democratic setting and should not be exaggerated into a major crisis. “In my own opinion, I don’t think it’s a serious issue, like many people try to make it look like it’s a very serious issue,” he said. “Because, you know, in everything we are talking about democracy, people can choose to disagree and agree. So, in my own opinion, it was just a slight misunderstanding.” Sani assured party supporters that the issue had been settled and dismissed suggestions of an ongoing division within the forum. “I don’t think you will hear anything again. At least eight persons were reportedly killed in a suspected cult-related attack in the Aliade Street area of Makurdi during the early hours of Monday, sparking fear and tension among residents. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers arrived around 2 a.m. on motorcycles and invaded a residential compound while many occupants were asleep. Residents alleged that the gunmen dragged some victims out before opening fire on them. Community sources said four people died instantly during the initial assault, while additional casualties were recorded after neighbours who responded to the sound of gunshots were also attacked. One resident, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, described the incident as chaotic, saying the assailants appeared highly coordinated and fled immediately after carrying out the attack. The violence forced many residents to remain indoors over fears of possible reprisal attacks or renewed violence. Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Makurdi Local Government Area, Joseph Keffi, linked the killings to suspected cult clashes. According to Keffi, preliminary investigations suggested that the violence may have stemmed from a dispute between rival cult groups. He added that some innocent residents were caught in the attack because they allegedly sheltered an individual connected to the conflict. Nigeria is reportedly in advanced talks with the World Bank over a fresh $1.25 billion loan facility aimed at supporting economic reforms, investment growth and job creation under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to documents linked to the proposed programme titled Nigeria Actions for Investment and Jobs Acceleration, the facility is expected to support reforms in critical sectors of the economy, including access to finance, electricity, digital services, agriculture, taxation and trade. Reports indicate that negotiations have progressed to an advanced stage, with the proposal expected to be presented to the World Bank Board of Executive Directors for approval on June 26, 2026. If approved, the facility would become one of Nigeria’s largest recent borrowings from the World Bank, behind the $1.5 billion Reforms for Economic Stabilisation to Enable Transformation Development Policy Financing approved in June 2024. The Federal Ministry of Finance is expected to serve as the implementing agency for the programme. Focus On Economic Reforms And Investment The World Bank document reportedly stated that the proposed funding is designed to support the Federal Government’s reform agenda by improving competitiveness and expanding access to critical services. The lender explained that the programme aims to: expand access to finance, improve electricity and digital infrastructure, strengthen trade and tax reforms, support agricultural productivity, and encourage private sector investment and job creation. The document also noted that the project had already passed key internal assessments and was moving toward final approval. Concerns Over Rising Debt Burden The fresh loan discussions come amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s increasing debt profile and dependence on external financing. Nigeria’s external debt reportedly stood at about $51.86 billion as of December 31, 2025, while total public debt has risen to approximately $110.97 billion. Between June 2023 and May 2026, the World Bank approved an estimated $9.35 billion in loans and credits for Nigeria across sectors such as: power, healthcare, education, agriculture, renewable energy, social protection, and support for small and medium-sized businesses. Some of the major approvals during the period include: the $2.25 billion RESET and ARMOR reform financing package approved in June 2024, the $1.57 billion HOPE and SPIN programmes approved in September 2024, and the $1.08 billion education and resilience support package approved in March 2025. Federal Government Pushes For Faster Disbursement The development also comes shortly after the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, warned that Nigeria could reconsider future World Bank loans if approval and disbursement delays continue beyond six months. According to reports, Ogunjimi stressed that since the facilities are repayable loans and not grants, the disbursement process must align with Nigeria’s fiscal planning and project execution timelines. The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed by Fubara Dagogo seeking to nullify the recently conducted national congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case because it concerned the internal affairs of a political party. The judge held that matters relating to nomination of candidates, purchase of nomination forms and party congress procedures are non-justiciable and therefore outside the powers of the court to determine. Justice Abdulmalik subsequently struck out the suit and awarded ₦10 million each against Dagogo and his lawyer, Ogochukwu Onyema, bringing the total cost awarded in favour of the defendants to ₦20 million. Dagogo, who contested for the position of National Vice Chairman (South-South) during the APC national congress, had challenged what he described as his unlawful exclusion from the party’s convention process. In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/591/2026, he asked the court to void any congress conducted for the South-South vice chairmanship position without his participation. The defendants in the matter included the APC, its National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, National Vice Chairman (South-South) Victor Giadom and National Organising Secretary Sulaiman Muitamma. Dagogo also sought ₦100 million in damages over alleged embarrassment and mental distress arising from the party’s refusal to issue him nomination forms despite payment. However, the APC, through its counsel Kayode Okunade, argued that the matter related strictly to the domestic affairs of the party and that the plaintiff had failed to exhaust internal dispute resolution channels before approaching the court.
