A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Nyesom Wike has dismissed claims of a leadership vacuum within the opposition party, insisting that the current National Working Committee remains legally constituted despite recent counterclaims from the party’s Board of Trustees. The rebuttal was issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, who maintained that Abdulrahman Mohammed remains the legitimate national chairman of the party. The clarification follows an earlier declaration by the PDP Board of Trustees, led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, announcing its assumption of the party’s national leadership. The Board had argued that a recent Supreme Court ruling created a constitutional vacuum by nullifying the November 2025 national convention held in Ibadan, which produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee. Wabara further contended that the apex court’s judgment invalidated subsequent administrative decisions arising from that convention, including the appointments of key party officials such as Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade. Based on this interpretation, the Board argued that it was constitutionally compelled to step in to prevent a breakdown in party leadership. However, Mohammed rejected that position, describing it as a deliberate misrepresentation of the Supreme Court’s ruling. According to him, the judgment was narrowly focused on the legality of the 2025 Ibadan convention and did not extend to suspensions, expulsions, or the validity of the current National Working Committee. He stressed that the issue of party officers’ suspension was never litigated before any of the courts involved, making claims that the apex court upheld such actions legally untenable. “The Supreme Court addressed only the validity or otherwise of the November 2025 convention. At no point did the judgment pronounce on the suspension or expulsion of any party official,” Mohammed stated. He argued that the party’s leadership structure remains operational and constitutionally valid, insisting there is no legal basis for an interim takeover by the Board of Trustees. Mohammed also questioned Wabara’s authority to issue directives on behalf of the party, alleging that his tenure as chairman of the Board of Trustees had already expired. He maintained that under the PDP constitution, the Board of Trustees does not possess executive powers to assume control of the party’s day-to-day administration or usurp the functions of the National Working Committee. “The PDP constitution is explicit on the role of the Board of Trustees. It is an advisory body and not an executive organ empowered to take over party leadership,” he said. He further identified Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as the only legitimate leader of the Board of Trustees. Dismissing reports of internal division, Mohammed urged the media and the public to rely on verifiable legal facts rather than competing political narratives. He insisted that despite ongoing disputes, the party remains a unified political institution. “There are no factions in the PDP. What exists is an attempt by a rejected group to distort the facts and mislead the public,” he said. The latest development highlights the continuing internal struggle for control within Nigeria’s main opposition party, as rival blocs battle for legitimacy ahead of the 2027 general elections. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=688

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu over comments suggesting that rising insecurity will not force him out of office, describing the stance as insensitive and disconnected from the realities faced by Nigerians. In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the remarks were troubling, arguing that they downplay the human cost of ongoing violence across the country. “It is horrifying that the deaths of innocent citizens are reduced to mere political rhetoric,” he said. Concerns Over Security and Leadership Atiku acknowledged that seeking re-election is a constitutional right but insisted that the government has fallen short in its primary responsibility—protecting lives and property. He warned that the scale of insecurity has reached alarming levels, citing estimates that thousands of Nigerians have been killed since 2023, with communities across various regions affected. “These are not just numbers—they are families shattered, communities destroyed, and a nation bleeding,” he stated. Criticism of Government Response The former vice president also faulted what he described as insufficient empathy and response from the government to recent violent incidents, including attacks on communities and places of worship. He argued that declining public trust in the administration stems from lived realities such as: Worsening insecurity Rising cost of living Controversial economic decisions According to him, trust must be earned through performance, not demanded through political messaging. Warning Against Suppressing Dissent Atiku cautioned against any attempts to silence criticism, stressing that public dissatisfaction cannot be dismissed as mere political opposition. “No amount of intimidation or deflection can alter the lived realities of Nigerians,” he said. Call for Action He urged the government to move beyond rhetoric and implement concrete reforms, particularly in the security sector, to address the country’s challenges. “Nigerians do not need bravado—they need protection. They do not need assurances—they need evidence of leadership,” Atiku added. Broader Context The remarks highlight growing political tensions as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures increasingly scrutinising the government’s handling of security and economic issues. Atiku concluded that ultimately, Nigerians will judge leadership based on outcomes, not statements, emphasising that governance is being tested by the realities citizens face daily. The House of Representatives of Nigeria has begun deliberations on a proposed law seeking to establish a 50-year national economic plan aimed at guiding Nigeria’s development from 2026 to 2076. The bill was debated during plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu. Push for Long-Term Economic Stability Leading the debate, the sponsor, Amobi Ogah, said the initiative is designed to tackle Nigeria’s long-standing problem of inconsistent policies and short-term planning. “This is a bold legislative effort to provide a legally binding framework that ensures continuity across administrations,” Ogah stated. He argued that many past development blueprints failed due to weak implementation structures, lack of legal backing, and frequent policy reversals. Learning from Past Failures Ogah cited previous initiatives such as: Vision 2010 Vision 20:2020 Economic Recovery and Growth Plan According to him, despite their ambition, these plans were undermined by poor execution, leading to abandoned projects and inefficient use of resources. Key Goals of the Bill The proposed legislation seeks to: Institutionalise policy continuity and coordination Promote macroeconomic stability Strengthen accountability and implementation mechanisms Encourage investment through policy predictability Support economic diversification beyond oil dependency Ogah stressed that a long-term plan would reduce uncertainty and help Nigeria better withstand external shocks, especially fluctuations in global oil prices. Backing from Lawmakers The House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, supported the bill, describing it as a framework that would enforce discipline in governance regardless of which party is in power. Similarly, Yusuf Gagdi pointed to Nigeria’s past economic growth under Yakubu Gowon, attributing it to structured national development planning. “We began to face challenges when we abandoned structured planning and agriculture,” Gagdi noted. Global Alignment Ogah added that the bill aligns with international best practices, referencing long-term strategies adopted by countries like South Africa, Rwanda, and Botswana, as well as the African Union’s Agenda 2063. What Comes Next The bill is expected to proceed to a third reading in the House before being transmitted to the Senate for concurrence. If passed into law, it could mark a major shift toward long-term, legally enforced economic planning in Nigeria—an approach many analysts believe is critical for sustainable growth and global competitiveness. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=683

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that any decision to extend the deadline for the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms ahead of the 2027 general elections will rest with its National Working Committee (NWC). Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, said the party is currently operating strictly within its approved timetable and has not granted any extension. “The National Working Committee will decide at its meeting if there will be any room for extension,” he said. “There is presently no extension for the sales of the forms.” Process Still on Track Yilwatda emphasised that the sale of forms is progressing smoothly, with no operational issues reported so far. He noted that banks handling payments and party officials overseeing documentation are functioning effectively. According to him, the party is also monitoring feedback channels, including social media, to ensure transparency and quickly address any concerns raised by aspirants. Commitment to Internal Democracy The APC chairman reiterated the party’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all aspirants, describing the ongoing process as evidence of internal democracy. “Someone has even picked a form to contest the presidency, and this shows the level of democracy we have,” he said. He added that the growing number of aspirants reflects the party’s popularity and national acceptance. What It Means For now, aspirants must work within the existing timeline, as any adjustment will only come after a formal decision by the NWC. The stance suggests the APC is keen on maintaining order and procedural integrity as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify. The party maintained that due process will guide any future changes, reinforcing its position that no deadline extension is currently under consideration. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=682

The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the decision by the party’s national leadership to dissolve its State Executive Committee, describing the move as unconstitutional and lacking legal foundation. The PDP’s national headquarters had earlier announced the dissolution in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudu Mohammed, alongside the appointment of a 15-member caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs in the state. The committee is chaired by Hayatu Tafida, with Ahmed S. Pawa serving as secretary. State Leadership Pushes Back Reacting to the development, the Sokoto PDP Chairman, Bello Goronyo, dismissed the action, maintaining that the current executive remains the legitimate leadership of the party in the state. He argued that the executive committee was democratically elected and cannot be removed arbitrarily without due process. “You cannot simply dissolve an elected executive. It cannot be done in that manner,” Goronyo said. “We were duly elected into office, and only a court of law has the authority to remove us.” Legal and Constitutional Concerns Goronyo stressed that any attempt to impose a caretaker committee without constitutional backing would be resisted, warning that such actions undermine internal democracy within the party. He also acknowledged the ongoing leadership crisis at the national level but insisted it does not invalidate the mandate of the Sokoto State executive. Link to Broader PDP Crisis The dispute comes amid a wider internal conflict within the PDP, with key issues already before the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Goronyo emphasized that all party organs must respect due process while awaiting judicial clarification on the national leadership tussle. Implications The standoff highlights deepening divisions within the PDP as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify. Analysts warn that unresolved internal disputes could weaken the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects if not addressed through lawful and transparent mechanisms. The Sokoto chapter reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and internal democracy, insisting it will continue to function as the duly elected leadership pending any valid legal directive to the contrary. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=680

The German government has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria in addressing insecurity and promoting peaceful coexistence, following renewed calls for protection and humanitarian assistance from residents of Yelwata community in Benue State. Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Freedom of Religion or Belief, Thomas Rachel, made this known on April 28, 2026, during a press briefing in Abuja after a fact-finding visit to affected communities and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. Rachel described his visit to Yelwata—scene of a deadly 2025 attack—as deeply emotional, noting that survivors are still living in fear and uncertainty. “I am still moved by my visit to Yelwata… More than 200 Christians were killed there,” he said. “The people asked for safety, for support, and for a chance to return to their ancestral homes.” Lingering Impact of the Yelwata Attack Yelwata, located near Makurdi in Guma Local Government Area, was attacked in June 2025 by heavily armed assailants. The violence left over 200 people dead, destroyed homes, and displaced thousands, many of whom remain in IDP camps. Rachel said interactions with victims, religious leaders, and community members revealed deep anxiety about the future, particularly among displaced families struggling to rebuild their lives. “A Shared Threat Across Religions” Addressing Nigeria’s broader security challenges, the German envoy stressed that violence cuts across religious lines. “Christians and Muslims have a common enemy — terrorists,” he said, expressing solidarity with Nigeria. During his visit, Rachel engaged with both Christian and Muslim communities, as well as civil society groups, noting that insecurity affects all groups regardless of faith. Concerns Over Human Rights and Blasphemy Laws Rachel also raised concerns about alleged human rights violations linked to the enforcement of blasphemy laws in parts of northern Nigeria. He warned that selective application of such laws could undermine freedom of religion and belief. Complex Security Landscape He highlighted multiple drivers of violence in Nigeria, including: Terrorist activities by groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province in the North Farmer-herder conflicts in the Middle Belt According to him, these overlapping crises require a combination of security measures, dialogue, and community engagement. No German Troops, But Continued Support Rachel clarified that Germany will not deploy troops to Nigeria but will continue providing military training and advisory support through the Bundeswehr. “Nigeria is a strong country. We will not act militarily, but we will continue to support through training and cooperation,” he said. Emphasis on Unity and Dialogue Reaffirming Germany’s partnership with Nigeria, Rachel stressed that lasting peace depends on unity across ethnic and religious divides. He concluded that fear among citizens remains a major challenge and called for sustained government action to restore confidence, ensure security, and enable displaced communities to return home safely. Germany, he added, remains committed to supporting Nigeria as a key democratic partner in Africa, particularly in advancing human rights and freedom of religion. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=679

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerian universities to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a critical tool for strengthening ethical standards and improving financial accountability. Speaking in Kano at the 8th Biennial Conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State Universities, Olukoyede described AI as “a necessary defence” against corruption in the higher education sector. Why AI Matters in Universities Olukoyede noted that universities manage vast financial resources—including tuition, research grants, and government funding—yet continue to face serious accountability issues. He revealed that the EFCC has handled multiple cases involving: Inflated contracts Ghost workers Diversion of students’ fees According to him, such practices erode trust and undermine the credibility of institutions meant to produce ethical professionals. “A university that lacks financial accountability cannot credibly train future accountants and auditors,” he said, stressing that institutional integrity is tied to national development. How AI Can Help The EFCC boss outlined several areas where AI could transform governance in universities: Fraud detection and risk analysis Automated auditing systems Payroll verification to eliminate ghost workers Procurement monitoring Academic integrity checks He also cited the commission’s own use of AI in operations like “Operation Eagle Flush” in 2024, which led to hundreds of arrests linked to cyber and financial crimes. Key Recommendations Olukoyede called on university governing councils to take concrete steps, including: Establishing AI and Digital Governance Committees Developing digital integrity strategies Investing in infrastructure such as broadband, cybersecurity, and cloud systems Partnering with the EFCC for training and intelligence sharing He also recommended creating an AI Code of Ethics to address concerns around privacy, bias, and academic freedom. Human Integrity Still Central Despite the advantages of technology, Olukoyede cautioned that AI alone cannot solve corruption. “No matter how sophisticated the technology, its effectiveness depends on the integrity of those who use it,” he said. He warned against risks such as over-reliance on automation, weakened professional judgment, and cybersecurity threats due to poor data management. Bigger Picture Olukoyede emphasised that tackling corruption in universities is part of a broader national effort, calling for collective responsibility across institutions. “The fight against corruption is a national project,” he said, reaffirming the EFCC’s readiness to support universities in building transparent and accountable systems. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=677

Why did they kill him? Why did they call the vigilance team to mop his blood? Why did they instruct them to bury my son’s brains?” she asked. Remembering the Victim Abubakar described her son as disciplined and devoted, noting his commitment to his faith and his aspirations for the future. “He was a responsible boy… he had plans for himself, for his siblings, for his mother. And just like that, his dream was cut off right in his room,” she said. Call for Intervention The grieving mother appealed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Remi Tinubu, Ahmed Usman Ododo, his wife Sefiya, civil society groups, and Amnesty International to intervene and ensure accountability. “This fight is too big for me. This pain is too big for me to bear,” she said. Aftermath Jamiu has since been laid to rest at the Muslim cemetery in Kubwa. Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a highly formidable political opponent, noting that defeating him—even under free and fair electoral conditions—would be a significant challenge. Speaking on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Adeyanju acknowledged Tinubu’s deep-rooted influence and strategic strength in Nigeria’s political landscape. Despite being a vocal critic of the administration, he credited the president with exceptional political skill, particularly in electioneering and power consolidation. According to him, Tinubu has developed a reputation for consistently winning and maintaining control, attributing this to a well-established political structure and extensive network of allies across the country. “Jagaban knows how to win, even in a free and fair election,” Adeyanju said, referring to Tinubu’s widely known political nickname. He further argued that the president’s influence extends across multiple levels of governance, claiming that a large number of state governors and political actors align with him, reinforcing his dominance within the system. Adeyanju also highlighted Tinubu’s ability to forge and sustain alliances, describing his political machinery as one of the most effective in the country. In his view, the ruling party remains firmly in control, with limited opposition capable of mounting a serious challenge. While acknowledging this dominance, he suggested that the African Democratic Congress could emerge as a potential contender, provided it builds sufficient structure and cohesion to rival the current political establishment. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=671

The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, has pledged to deliver a more efficient and reliable national transmission network as he begins a second five-year term in office. Abdulaziz, whose tenure was recently renewed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made the commitment during a town-hall meeting with staff at the company’s headquarters in Abuja. He described his reappointment as a renewed mandate aligned with the Federal Government’s broader reform agenda for the power sector. Transmission Capacity Expansion Highlighting progress under his leadership, Abdulaziz said Nigeria’s grid wheeling capacity has increased significantly—from about 5,000 megawatts in 2015 to over 8,700 megawatts. He attributed this growth to sustained investments in transmission infrastructure, including the installation of transformers and the completion of major 330kV and 132kV projects nationwide. According to him, more than 82 transformers were installed within 23 months, including 15 high-capacity 300MVA units deployed in late 2025. Key Infrastructure Developments The installations covered major transmission hubs across the country, including Akangba, Lekki, Ikeja West, Osogbo, Jos, Gombe, Kano, Benin, Enugu, and Abuja, among others. Abdulaziz noted that the upgrades have strengthened grid reliability, reduced system disturbances, and improved coordination across operational regions. International Partnerships The TCN boss also highlighted collaborations with global development institutions that have supported network expansion, including: World Bank African Development Bank Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Agence Française de Développement He said these partnerships have played a key role in financing and executing major transmission projects. Focus of Second Term Looking ahead, Abdulaziz emphasised that the priority of his second term would be translating infrastructure growth into tangible improvements in electricity supply. He stated that the goal is to ensure stable and consistent bulk power delivery to distribution companies for onward supply to consumers. Internal Alignment and Workforce Engagement Also speaking at the event, Abiodun Afolabi Fadahunsi, Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Services, said the town-hall meeting was aimed at strengthening communication between management and staff. She noted that transparency, inclusiveness, and workforce alignment are critical to meeting the evolving demands of Nigeria’s power sector. Sector Outlook Analysts note that while improvements in transmission capacity are essential, sustained progress across generation and distribution segments will be crucial to achieving reliable electricity supply nationwide. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=667

Edo Crash Claims 12 Lives In Edo State, 12 persons died while 14 others sustained injuries in a crash that occurred over the weekend at Egono community along the Auchi–Ewu–Benin road. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident involved a truck conveying both passengers and goods. The vehicle reportedly attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre at high speed, lost control, and overturned. The FRSC spokesperson in the state, Patricia Onwochei, confirmed the incident and attributed the crash to wrongful overtaking. She added that one of the deceased had already been buried, while the remaining victims were deposited at the mortuary of St. Lazarus Hospital. Seven Die in Taraba Collision In a separate incident in Taraba State, seven people—including two women and two minors—were killed in a road crash on Tuesday evening in the Garbabi area of Gashaka Local Government Area. The accident involved a commercial vehicle travelling from Bali to Serti, the administrative headquarters of the council area, and an oncoming trailer. An official of the Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Bali branch, Haruna Lukman, said the crash occurred while the driver was negotiating a sharp bend near Kabarin Baturi village. He noted that the impact was severe, with all seven victims reportedly dying at the scene. Overloading and Road Conditions Highlighted Lukman further revealed that the vehicle involved was designed to carry six passengers but was frequently overloaded with up to nine occupants. He attributed the practice to rising fuel costs and alleged extortion by security operatives, factors he said have contributed to unsafe transport practices. Emergency responders, including NARTO officials, police personnel, and local volunteers, evacuated the victims to Bali General Hospital. Renewed Safety Concerns The twin incidents underscore persistent road safety challenges in Nigeria, particularly issues related to speeding, dangerous overtaking, poor vehicle conditions, and overloading. Safety experts continue to stress the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved driver education, and better road infrastructure to reduce fatalities. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=654

Chelsea FC have dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior just three months after his appointment, following a significant decline in form. Rosenior, 41, who took charge on January 6 after replacing Enzo Maresca, leaves Stamford Bridge after overseeing 23 matches across all competitions. During his tenure, he recorded 10 wins, 10 defeats, and three draws. Poor Form Seals Exit Despite a balanced overall record, Chelsea’s late-season collapse proved decisive. The team suffered seven defeats in their last eight matches, including five consecutive losses in the Premier League. The final blow came with a 3–0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday night. Notably, Chelsea failed to score in five straight league matches—marking their worst goal drought since 1912. Club Statement and Leadership Decision Following internal discussions, the club’s ownership group, BlueCo, led by Behdad Eghbali, opted to make an immediate managerial change. In an official statement, Chelsea confirmed Rosenior’s departure and expressed appreciation for his professionalism and efforts during his short spell at the club. However, the club acknowledged that recent performances fell below expected standards, necessitating decisive action despite the long-term contract initially given to the coach. Interim Appointment Ahead of Key Fixtures Chelsea have appointed Calum McFarlane as interim head coach until the end of the season, supported by the existing backroom staff. The timing of the decision is critical, coming just days before the club’s FA Cup semi-final clash against Leeds United. Focus on Stability and Season Objectives The club stated that it will undertake a thorough process to identify a long-term managerial solution, while aiming to stabilise performances in the short term. Chelsea remain focused on securing European qualification and progressing in the FA Cup as the season approaches its conclusion. Unexpected Turn After Long-Term Plan Rosenior’s dismissal represents a significant shift in strategy, as Chelsea had initially planned to evaluate his performance over a longer period extending towards the 2027/28 season. However, the sharp downturn in results forced the club to act swiftly in a bid to salvage their campaign. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=650

Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Safe School Initiative in the Anambra State Command have arrested a suspect, identified as Eric Nwombu, over alleged impersonation and unlawful possession of examination materials. The development was confirmed in a statement issued in Awka by the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga. Items Recovered from Suspect According to the police, officers recovered eight examination slips belonging to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), alongside an exercise book containing names and examination numbers of candidates. The suspect was reportedly unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding how he came into possession of the materials. Arrest Following Tip-Off Police said Nwombu was apprehended after staff at a cyber café in Atani raised concerns about his activities. He had allegedly been collecting 2026 JAMB examination slips from candidates who visited the centre to check their examination details, claiming to be a coordinator for the examination in the area. Suspicion grew among the café operators, who subsequently alerted the authorities. Upon the arrival of police officers, the suspect reportedly attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Investigation Ongoing Authorities confirmed that preliminary investigations are underway, with the case set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further inquiry. Police Reaffirm Commitment The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of public examinations. He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=651

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified why some candidates are seeing a “No Result Yet” message when checking their Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results. In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the board explained that the status applies to underage candidates whose results have not yet been released. Age Requirement for UTME JAMB reaffirmed that only candidates who will be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2026, are eligible to register and sit for the UTME, in line with existing regulations. The board, however, noted that exceptions exist for academically outstanding candidates under a special category. Strict Conditions for Exceptional Candidates According to JAMB, underage candidates may still be considered if they demonstrate exceptional academic ability, but must meet stringent performance benchmarks. Specifically, such candidates are required to score at least 320 in the UTME and achieve a minimum of 80 percent in subsequent screening stages. “Results for underage candidates have not been released. When such candidates attempt to check their results, the system will return the message ‘No Result Yet,’” the statement said. The board added that only candidates who meet the 320 score threshold will be shortlisted and invited to proceed to further stages of evaluation. Policy Backed by Stakeholder Agreement JAMB noted that the policy aligns with an agreement reached with parents of underage candidates, ensuring that only those who meet clearly defined excellence criteria are considered. Implication for Candidates The clarification means that candidates seeing the “No Result Yet” status should first confirm their eligibility status, particularly their age, before raising concerns. The United States Department of State recently authorised the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, citing security concerns across Nigeria. In an updated travel advisory issued on April 8, 2026, the U.S. government urged its citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria, assigning the country a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” status, while designating several states under “Level 4: Do Not Travel.” States newly added to the highest-risk category include Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba, bringing the total number of restricted states to 23. The advisory highlighted risks such as violent crime, terrorism, kidnapping for ransom, and civil unrest, warning that U.S. citizens could be specifically targeted. It also noted that attacks could occur in public places including markets, places of worship, hotels, and large gatherings, while healthcare services remain inconsistent. Mixed Reactions from Nigerian Leaders and Activists Reacting to the development, former presidential candidate Peter Obi described the advisory as a “bad omen,” urging authorities to treat the situation as a national emergency, particularly given its potential impact on investor confidence. Activist Omoyele Sowore also raised concerns, questioning whether there were undisclosed security threats. “What is going on? Are there things going to happen in Nigeria that we should be aware of?” he asked. However, the Federal Government dismissed the concerns, describing the move as precautionary. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said the advisory was a routine measure guided by internal U.S. protocols and does not reflect a breakdown of security in Nigeria. “While we acknowledge isolated security challenges in some areas, there is no general breakdown of law and order, and the vast majority of the country remains stable,” he stated. Security Concerns in Abuja Highlighted Recent incidents suggest that security concerns in the Federal Capital Territory are not entirely unfounded. In March, residents of communities on the outskirts of Abuja fled following threats from suspected bandits warning of coordinated attacks. Additionally, an internal security memo reportedly indicated heightened alert over potential attacks targeting critical infrastructure, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Authorities have also intensified operations, with the FCT Police Command confirming the arrest of 14 suspected members of a car theft and robbery syndicate and the recovery of multiple stolen vehicles. Pattern of International Travel Warnings The U.S. advisory is part of a broader pattern of similar warnings issued by foreign governments in recent years. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have consistently advised caution or restricted travel to parts of Nigeria, citing security risks including terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime. Analysts note that Abuja’s political significance often makes it a focal point in such advisories, shaping international perceptions of Nigeria’s security environment. Expert Insight: Precaution, Not Panic Geopolitical security risk analyst Tanwa Ashiru said the U.S. directive reflects heightened caution rather than confirmation of an imminent attack. “When the U.S. authorises departures, it signals that the environment is becoming unpredictable—not necessarily that an attack is imminent, but that risks are rising,” he explained. Ashiru added that such decisions are often influenced by broader intelligence trends, including pre-election tensions, rather than a single specific threat. He advised Abuja residents to remain alert without panicking. “People should become more security-conscious—observe their surroundings, trust their instincts, and report suspicious activities,” he said. Economic and Diplomatic Implications Beyond security concerns, experts warn that such advisories can have wider economic and diplomatic consequences. Ashiru noted that they may act as a “soft signal” to international investors, potentially discouraging foreign direct investment and increasing the cost of doing business due to higher perceived risks. He also highlighted the need for improved intelligence-sharing and visible, proactive policing to restore public confidence. Balancing Risk and Stability While the Federal Government maintains that Nigeria remains largely stable, the recurrence of international travel advisories underscores ongoing concerns about security challenges. Observers say addressing these concerns through coordinated security efforts and transparent communication will be key to maintaining both public confidence and Nigeria’s global reputation. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=639

The Football Association (FA) has announced new measures to limit heading in football, citing growing scientific concerns about its potential long-term impact on players’ brain health. The decision follows emerging medical evidence linking repeated heading of the ball to increased neurological risks, particularly over extended playing careers. Experts explain that each header generates a small but measurable force that transmits energy to the brain. While individual impacts are considered minor, repeated exposure over time may lead to cumulative damage. A major research project, the FIELD study, found that former professional footballers are approximately 3.5 times more likely to develop neurodegenerative diseases compared to the general population. New Safety Measures Introduced In response, the FA has implemented a phased ban on heading for children under the age of 11, aimed at protecting young players during critical stages of brain development. The governing body has also issued updated training guidelines to reduce high-force headers, particularly those arising from corners, crosses, and free-kicks. According to the FA, the measures are designed to minimise players’ exposure to repetitive head impacts while preserving the core elements of the game. Medical Backing and Global Collaboration FA Chief Medical Officer, Charlotte Cowie, said the policy was informed by new independent research providing deeper insight into the issue. “This new independent research provides innovative and previously undiscovered insight, and it is part of our ongoing commitment to better understand this complex area,” she said. Cowie added that the findings have been shared with international football bodies, including FIFA and UEFA, to encourage a coordinated global response. “We continue to support a unified international approach to advancing research and improving player safety,” she noted. Scotland Adopts Stricter Approach Meanwhile, the Scottish Football Association has introduced stricter measures, banning heading in training sessions on the day before and after matches in the professional game. The policy reflects a precautionary approach aimed at further reducing players’ overall exposure to head impacts. Ongoing Concerns and Future Action Football authorities say the new measures form part of a broader effort to balance player safety with the integrity of the sport, as research into the long-term effects of heading continues. There have also been increasing calls for coordinated international regulations to address the issue consistently across all levels of football. Sports http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=638

Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called on Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora to actively participate in the 2027 general elections. Kwankwaso made the appeal in a video shared via his official ? (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, urging eligible citizens—particularly young people—to complete their voter registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) without delay. He also encouraged Nigerians to register with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the party as part of a broader coalition positioning itself ahead of the next electoral cycle. “Fellow Nigerians; it is time for every eligible Nigerian, young and old, in the cities and villages, at home and in the diaspora, to take two decisive steps: register to vote with INEC and register with the ADC,” Kwankwaso said. Internal Criticism Emerges However, Kwankwaso’s remarks have drawn criticism from within the ADC. A factional leader of the party, Nafi’u Bala Gombe, dismissed the relevance of engaging with the former Kano State governor, citing what he described as past actions that did not favour Northern interests. Speaking during an interview on a Kano-based radio station, Gombe accused Kwankwaso of failing to utilise previous opportunities to advance the region’s development. “Any discussion concerning the North with people like you is not meaningful. The North looked up to you, but you did not make the difference expected,” he said. Gombe further alleged that Kwankwaso’s participation in the last general election weakened the region politically, particularly in the context of other prominent contenders such as Atiku Abubakar. Political Context Ahead of 2027 Kwankwaso’s call for voter mobilisation comes as political actors begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties intensifying grassroots engagement and coalition-building efforts. While his message focused on civic participation and political alignment, the criticism from within the ADC underscores ongoing internal divisions that may shape the party’s strategy moving forward. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that its Air Component under Operation HADIN KAI carried out a precision airstrike that eliminated several terrorists in the Yuwe axis of the Sambisa Forest in Borno State. The operation, conducted on April 19, 2026, forms part of ongoing military efforts to sustain pressure on insurgent groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East region. In an official statement, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Ehimen Ejodame, said the strike was executed based on credible intelligence supported by Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. According to him, the intelligence confirmed the presence of террорист elements occupying fortified positions, including structures and bunkers within the forest. “NAF air assets engaged the targets with precision munitions, destroying the structures, neutralising multiple terrorists, and eliminating key logistics facilities, as confirmed by subsequent Battle Damage Assessment,” Ejodame stated. Sustained Air Campaign Weakening Insurgents The NAF noted that continuous air operations have significantly degraded terrorist capabilities in the region, disrupting their movement and operational coordination. “The sustained tempo of air operations continues to degrade terrorist networks, leaving them increasingly exposed and under pressure, forcing desperate and reactive actions,” the statement added. Military Reaffirms Commitment The Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to ongoing counterinsurgency operations. “The Nigerian Air Force will sustain relentless, intelligence-driven air operations until terrorist elements are completely neutralised. We remain committed to protecting our personnel, safeguarding national security, and ensuring the safety of all citizens,” he said. The Air Force further emphasised that it would intensify precision strikes across operational theatres while strictly adhering to rules of engagement and taking measures to minimise civilian harm. Ongoing Counterinsurgency Efforts Operation HADIN KAI remains a key component of Nigeria’s counterinsurgency strategy in the North-East, particularly in areas such as the Sambisa Forest, long considered a stronghold for insurgent groups. Military authorities say operations will continue as part of broader efforts to restore stability and security across affected communities. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=635

Victims rescued from a recent kidnapping incident in Benue State have narrated harrowing experiences of torture, starvation, and inhumane treatment during their four days in captivity. The victims were abducted on Wednesday along the Taraku–Otukpo road in Otukpo Local Government Area when armed men attacked a Benue Links bus conveying passengers. They regained freedom in the early hours of Sunday following coordinated security operations. Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, received the victims at the Government House in Makurdi, where he confirmed that several of those affected were initially identified as candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), alongside other commuters. The governor assured that all victims would receive medical attention and support before being reunited with their families. He also appealed to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to consider rescheduling the examination for those who allegedly missed it due to the incident. “We will support their education and take steps to ensure such incidents do not recur,” Alia stated. Victims Detail Abuse in Captivity Several victims described severe physical abuse and deprivation during their ordeal. One of them, 18-year-old Gbenga Daniels, said he was beaten and robbed of ₦8,000. “They beat us and we didn’t eat. We only drank dirty water,” he recounted. Another victim, Ngukulan Iornav, said the captives survived largely on garri mixed with salt while enduring repeated beatings. A medical student of the University of Maiduguri, Orih Raphael Sylvester, explained that the journey began normally before the attack occurred around 8:26 p.m. after a delay caused by mechanical issues. According to him, the abductors kept moving them deeper into the forest to evade security forces. “We didn’t eat the first night because we were constantly on the move. On the second day, we drank muddy water. On the third day, they gave us garri and forced us to call our families while beating us,” he said. He added that the kidnappers intensified ransom demands on the fourth day before eventually releasing them early Sunday morning. Other victims, including Sunday Augustine, a student of the Federal University of Lafia, and Akor Jessica, also reported sustaining injuries and enduring severe trauma. Ransom Payment Alleged by Family A relative of two victims, Ochadgwuba Alexander, disclosed that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦10 million per person. He said he later paid ₦3.4 million in cash along with supplies to secure their release, after which he coordinated with security personnel to facilitate their safe return. “It was a nightmare. I had to wait for about 40 minutes before they were brought out from the bush,” he said. Police Confirm Rescue, Arrests The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Enemari, confirmed that the rescue was achieved through joint operations involving the police, military intelligence, Operation Whirl Stroke, and NSCDC Agro Rangers. He stated that 18 passengers were on board during the attack, with 13 initially held captive until Sunday. “Today, all passengers have regained their freedom. We also have eight suspects in custody, with strong evidence linking at least seven to the crime,” Enemari said. JAMB Refutes UTME Candidate Claim However, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has disputed claims that the victims were UTME candidates. JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said preliminary findings indicate the individuals were participants in a police recruitment exercise, not examination candidates. According to him, they had travelled to Makurdi and were returning to Otukpo when the incident occurred. Benjamin added that UTME candidates are typically assigned to different examination centres and do not travel in groups, casting doubt on earlier reports. Ongoing Investigation Authorities say investigations are ongoing as security agencies continue efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the area. The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over road safety and kidnapping in parts of Benue State, as well as the need for coordinated security responses and victim support systems. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=633

The General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, on Sunday declared divine judgment on bandits and their sponsors responsible for killings and kidnappings across Nigeria. Speaking during a sermon themed “Covenant Day of Vengeance” at the church’s headquarters in Ota, Oyedepo said those behind the violence would face divine punishment within seven days. “I declare judgment on those who caused these tragedies and their supporters in the name of Jesus,” he said. “Unless I am not sent, this will happen in the next seven days.” The cleric also assured Nigerians that they would soon hear “testimonies of vengeance” as a result of divine intervention. Meanwhile, Oyedepo recently acknowledged the presence of fraudsters within society, including individuals who exploit religious platforms. While recounting an encounter during a midweek service, he revealed that some individuals have been impersonating him in attempts to defraud unsuspecting victims. According to him, one such impersonator was exposed after trying to solicit money while posing as the bishop. “We had an experience some time back when someone was claiming to be me and that I was asking for something,” he said. Oyedepo warned members of the public to remain vigilant and urged his congregation to uphold truth and integrity to avoid falling victim to scams. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=631

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Representatives aspirant for Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in Anambra State, Lotanna Ikebunwa, has dismissed recent endorsements of President Bola Tinubu by some state governors. Ikebunwa described the endorsements as politically insignificant, insisting they do not reflect the true will of Nigerians. Speaking during the inauguration of the ADC Good Governance Initiative at Anaedo Hall in Nnewi, he said the endorsements were personal decisions by the governors and not representative of public opinion. “The endorsement of Tinubu by governors is personal to them because the people are not with them. Nigerians are clamouring for change,” he said. He further argued that many Nigerians are distancing themselves from ruling party structures due to prevailing economic hardship. The former Students’ Union Government president expressed confidence in his chances ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that he enjoys strong grassroots support from traders, youths, women, and other stakeholders across the constituency. Ikebunwa also criticised the performance of the current representative, alleging poor representation and lack of development in the area. “We are lagging behind in everything. There is no clean water, no federal presence, and no meaningful support for the business community in Nnewi,” he said. According to him, the constituency has fallen behind others in terms of empowerment programmes and access to federal projects. The aspirant disclosed that he has contributed to strengthening the party at the grassroots level by providing and furnishing ward offices, a move he said has boosted membership and coordination within the party. At the event, the chairman of the occasion, Ibeokonkwo Michael, expressed optimism about Ikebunwa’s ambition, stating confidence that he would secure the ADC ticket and represent the constituency at the National Assembly in 2027. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=630

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has ordered the immediate reinstatement of three students suspended by the University of Ibadan (UI) for protesting a hike in tuition fees. Delivering judgment, Justice Nkeonye Maha nullified the decision of the institution’s Central Student Disciplinary Committee, ruling that the process violated the students’ right to fair hearing. “I hereby set aside the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and order the reinstatement of the suspended students,” the judge declared. Affected Students The students reinstated by the court are: Aduwo Ayodele Mide Gbadegesin Nice Linus They were suspended on July 14, 2025, after participating in a protest against increased tuition fees approved by the university’s governing council. Court Finds Violation of Fair Hearing The students challenged their suspension in court, arguing that they were denied the opportunity to: Call witnesses Present video evidence The court agreed, holding that the disciplinary proceedings breached Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to fair hearing. Justice Maha ruled that the denial of these rights undermined natural justice and rendered the sanctions invalid. Background to the Protest The protest was triggered by a circular issued by the university’s council approving a revised fee structure for students in the 2023/2024 academic session. The circular also directed students to complete registration within a specified deadline, sparking dissatisfaction and leading to the demonstration. CAPPA Reacts The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) welcomed the ruling, describing it as a strong defence of constitutional rights. The group called on the university to: Fully comply with the judgment Reinstate the students without delay Issue an unreserved apology CAPPA also referenced allegations presented in court that the students were subjected to harsh treatment during the incident, including being assaulted and profiled as criminals. Its Assistant Executive Director, Zikora Ibeh, said the ruling sends a clear message against suppressing dissent in academic institutions. “The court’s decision shows that authoritarian actions against students’ rights will not stand,” she said. http://dailygists.ng/post.php?id=627
