Celebrities / At Last, Daddy Showkey Returns To Studio by daisyjay(f): 10:20am On Nov 06, 2013
Popular singer, John Asiemo, aka Daddy Showkey, has decided to return to the music scene after what looks like a long hiatus. The self-styled ghetto soldier is not only back in the studio, he is currently working on a new album that he hopes will turn out a surprise hit with music fans soon.
In an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, Showkey said he had decided to keep the title of the work-in-progress and the location of the studio secret for now.
“The studio is just a small one. It is somewhere in Surulere, Lagos. I’d rather not talk about the location. As for the title of the album I’m working on, I want to keep it close to my chest for now,” he said.
For Showkey’s numerous fans across the country, who have missed his thrilling performances for a long time, this seems like heartwarming news.
The singer was forced to temporarily quit the scene after he narrowly escaped the assassin’s bullet two times in 2011. In one of the attacks, the suspected killers had stormed his former residence in Ojodu and killed one of his close associates who was visiting at the time.
Apart from making a brief public appearance during the 2012 anti-fuel subsidy removal protests in Lagos, Showkey has virtually spent the last two years in hiding for fear of unknown assailants that might be waiting to catch him unawares.
Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, just as he sweated it out in the studio, grief paid the dreadlocked creator of the popular Galaladance steps an unscheduled visit in Lagos. This time, his brother-in-law, Kachi, was involved in a fatal car crash and died on the spot.
“Kachi had lived with me for about 15 years. He was like my own brother. I feel so sad that he is gone. My wife has not recovered from the shock of losing him,” a grief-stricken Showkey told our correspondent.
However, Showkey has decided to put the sad event behind him and to concentrate on his work. He says he is working so hard on his forthcoming album and practically spends most of the nights in the studio nowadays. At the moment, his greatest desire is to catch up with the time he had lost these past years.
The grapevine recently rippled with talk about a possible collaboration between Showkey and Wizkid. Pictures of the two stars were splashed on the Internet. But efforts made to get the ghetto soldier’s comment on the subject proved abortive.

Celebrities / Tonto Dikeh 'collaborates' With D'banj by daisyjay(f): 9:05am On Nov 06, 2013
There's a lot of stuff that happens in this our entertainment industry that I hear but decide not to write. A lot. Half of them y'all will not even believe. Lol. But here's one that I think all you 'amebo lovers' should know. Tonto Dikeh and D'banj have gotten quite 'close' in recent times. She has been seen severally at D'banj's home in Lekki.

She's recording songs at the studio in his house and whenever she records late into the night, she spends the night there. Now, I'm not implying anything o, I'm just stating facts. And you don't have to believe my story o...hehe.
Quite a few people have seen and interacted with Tonto at D'banj's place and some even think she's his current babe because of how much time she spends there and some of the 'things' the two stars get up to ... but me I don't know that one oh, all I know is that she spends time there to further her music career and I do not know if D'banj is planning to sign her to his record label but he once saidthat if he signs her, she will blow!
Meanwhile, I hear the new song Tonto is recording at D'banj's studio is a banger. We dey wait to hear am..:-) Oh and by the way, Tonto Dikeh once dated Don Jazzy!

Celebrities / May D's "N150M Mansion" Is Actually A Rented Duplex In Magodo - Gateman Reveals by daisyjay(f): 11:06pm On Nov 05, 2013
A few weeks ago, May D‘s publicists released a statement claiming the pop artiste (real name Akinmayokun Awodumila) had acquired and moved into his ‘new 6-bedroom duplex’ located in the Magodo area of Lagos.

Many questioned the authenticity of the information.
NET investigations reveal that the even though the Pop singer has indeed moved into his first apartment, he has NOT acquired the property. May D recently rented the apartment, his neighbours tell us.

The beige and cream-coloured house located at 4b Adeleke Adekan Close, off Idowu Adewakun Street is part of a twin duplex constructed together – we are told the owners of the property rented it out recently to May D after the former occupants moved out. The first part of the twin duplex has also been rented out to a family.

‘No be him buy the place o, them rent am. The guy dey try sha but as I see am, him money no carry am‘, a neighbourhood watchman tells NET.

A neighbour who’d rather remain anonymous also confirmed the place was not sold to May D. ‘If it was sold, they sell the twin duplex not just one side‘.

We are told May D’s manger Raji Shehu along with a few other crew members are the Pop singer’s current housemates. The house is looked after by a young man called ‘John’ who serves as the house help and gate man.

As reported earlier, May D’s baby mama Adebola Olowoporoku and son do not stay in the same house with him. NET investigations reveal that Adebola resides in Magodo estate, at 3, Olu-Okewunmi Street.

Celebrities / Nadia’s Mother Confirms Jim Iyke’s Break-up With Daughter by daisyjay(f): 10:42pm On Nov 05, 2013
Nadia Buari and Jim Iyke’s relationship has gone through many ups and downs and the latest is about Nadia deleting all pictures from her instagram page which involved Jim Iyke. Well, she has her reasons for that but could it be a sign of breakup?

An interview her mum Hajia Buari granted with a media house brings this question into mind ‘Are they divorced?’. According to Nadia Buari’s mum who doesn’t really talk about Jim Iyke, “They were great together. They were like a couple. she was very connected to him”. The usage of past tense makes me think the relationship has come to an end.

Asked what type of man she should go for, she added: “She needs a man who likes to do the stuff she likes doing, someone laid back and fun-loving.”
She added: “She has talked to me about getting married and having children. She plans on settling down but not right now. She has to focus on her career.”'

Romance / Relationships:how To Stop Being Overly Jealous by daisyjay(f): 10:02am On Nov 05, 2013
Do you find yourself getting nagging feelings of jealousy when your partner is talking to other girls?

Do you worry that you’re smothering the relationship with your fears? To stop being an overly-jealous girlfriend and start being a dream girl, follow these instructions.

1. Give your partner space
If you’ve been dogging his footsteps, confronting him with accusations, stalking his social media profiles, or exhibiting any other desperate behavior, your first order of business is to back off.
Take a few deep breaths, detach, and play it cool for a while.
Find opportunities to be with friends, go to an event you’ve been interested in, and turn him down for at least one get-together.
Be very careful not to act vindictive about this, the point isn’t to punish him, give him the cold shoulder, or manipulate him into begging for forgiveness, but to give the both of you a break so you can blow off a little steam, get some perspective, and hopefully save the relationship.

2. Learn to feel good about yourself
Most feelings of jealousy come from being insecure and thinking that someone else can make your partner happier or bring more to the table. Remember that your partner chose you, not anyone else.
Stop obsessing over your weight, height, or looks, your constant negativity is draining for you and your partner both.
Worse yet, an overactive attitude of insecurity can drive people away, become a self-fulfilling prophecy that drives you deeper into the hole of fear and self-neglect.
Accept yourself as you are. Your partner is with you for a reason and obviously finds you attractive, but even if he weren’t and didn’t, you should never let anyone else’s opinion define or validate yours.

3. Deal with past hurts
Most people have them – and many let them spill over into new relationships by either re-enacting the same unhealthy dynamic over and over again or by looking at their wonderful new partners with a skeptical eye.
If necessary, learn how to cope with emotional pain so that you can feel better about yourself and be able to see your current relationship for what it really is.

4. Learn what it means to have a healthy relationship
Whether you’re new to the game or have been at it for years, it’s not always easy to know what a relationship is supposed to be and feel like. Many people don’t grow up with good examples of healthy relationships among their friends, family, or even parents.
What’s worse, having one awful relationship can completely throw off your sense of balance and self-trust, making you second-guess your every move for years to follow.

5. Reassess your current relationship
Once you’ve done some soul-searching and have a clearer perspective on things, it’s time to look at your relationship with a fresh eye.
Do your jealousy, doubt, and fear stem from your own issues with self-worth… or is that something you’ve been telling yourself to justify your partner’s unsatisfactory behavior?
Even if you haven’t been as stable a girlfriend as you should be, that doesn’t mean you should overlook or write off your partner’s transgressions to over-correct for your own feelings of guilt.
It’s always possible that your out-of-control feelings were the result of trying to suppress your own gut instincts – or, at the very least, that you both have played a hand in making the relationship what it is today.

6. Breathe new life into the relationship
Before you can do any in-depth work on yourself or as a couple, you need to do damage control on your strained relationship. Start by striking a healthy balance between giving your partner space and increasing the quality of your time together.
Pursue your own interests in a meaningful, enriching way: after all, part of what attracts people to one another is mystery, and if you spend all your time checking in on your partner with calls, texts, emails, and Facebook posts, there can hardly be any intrigue left in what you do.
Split your time more evenly between your partner and your friends and allow your partner to do the same. Rediscover your interest in a former passion or, if necessary, find a new hobby that will make your non-romantic time more meaningful.
Then, when you have both remembered what it’s like to miss one another, improve your time together by going on a vacation or staycation, trying something new like taking a partner dance class, or lightening the mood by being playful and maintaining the romance.

7. Build your communication
This is something the two of you both need to work on together; many relationship woes could be cured, if not avoided altogether, if couples simply learned how to truly and effectively communicate with one another. A big part of communicating effectively is knowing how to broach an unpleasant topic without putting your partner on the defensive (or, worse yet, the offensive).
Start by curbing your accusations: learn to state what you feel (ex. “I feel afraid when you stay out late and don’t tell me where you are or how long you’ll be there”) instead of what you fear (“I’m worried you’re cheating on me”), which can be come off like a slap in the face.
Be honest about your thoughts and concerns while you’re having them instead of stockpiling them for later and letting them explode one day out of the blue.

8. Learn to trust
Trust issues can make you go crazy. Ask yourself who it is you really mistrust: your partner, your partner’s friends… or yourself?
Coming to the realization that you still don’t trust yourself in love or that you’re simply threatened by other girls is a good thing, both stem from the same issue, can be worked on, and are totally within your control. Learn how to trust your partner again for his and your sake both.
He didn’t text you back? Big deal. Obsessing over things like this will only come across as annoying; if you are laid back and don’t expect instantaneous replies to everything, etc, he will not get irritated.
Don’t call him to see if he’s still there – take a deep breath and let it go. He will reply when he can.
Don’t ask him to stop going certain places. Part of jealousy is the desire to control others, and by giving him freedom, you show that you trust him and make him more likely to respect you.
Don’t write a blank check of trust. If you are genuinely concerned about something, do not be afraid to (gently) broach the topic.
Mention that it makes you feel uncomfortable when he talks to certain girls, or tell him honestly about a behavior he has that bothers you. Don’t overreact or make accusations. Simply state how you feel and, if he respects that, he will try to work it out.
If your partner simply isn’t trustworthy, it’s his turn to roll up his sleeves and match some of the hard work you’ve been putting into the relationship. If he can’t or won’t do it, dump him and start looking for someone who will.

9. Be an awesome girlfriend
Okay, so you’ve managed to salvage the relationship and heal the damage that has been done. Focus on being positive and making the relationship work. The right type of relationship needs communication, trust and prayer.
Politics / Pregnant Mother Of Two Paraded With 8-member Gang Robbery Suspects by daisyjay(f): 9:45am On Nov 05, 2013
Seven armed robbers, said to have killed two Policemen and wounded several others at Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State, were yesterday paraded by the Lagos State Police Command.

The eighth member of the gang was said to have been killed by the police.
The suspects include a married woman, 28-year-old Taiwo Obafunsho, a mother of two who is also three months pregnant.

Obafunsho said that she knew the gang through one of their girlfriends called Shade, who she met at Mushin where she has a shop.

The other suspects are Ife Olubaba, 29 who is the alleged gang leader; Saheed Wasiu, 23; Sedu Idowu 20; Wasiu Rafiu, 23; Odelade Kabiru, 26; Waliu Sanni, 29, and Taiye Agege said to be dead.

The suspects were found with two AK-47 rifles, one automatic pump-action gun, four locally-made pistols, two fully-loaded AK-47 magazines, 135 live cartridges and a Hyundai Tucson sports utility vehicle, number plate MUS 350 BG.

In his confession, Rafiu said: “The first operation we went for was at Agege and I was given N10,000. I was arrested at Oshodi.

“I did not know anything about it. But because they saw Taiye and me together, I was arrested. I did not even know what was happening. I did not follow them during the second operation.”

Another suspect, Sanni, said they took three vehicles for the operation, but that they did not find anything or any body to rob.

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ngozi Braide stated that it was a follow-up to what happened on November 3, where some robbers attacked policemen attached to Iju Police Station in Lagos at 3a.m.

“On October 9, when a group of armed robbers carted away two police riffles, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, directed the officer in charge of SARS Ikeja, SP Abba Kyari, to launch a massive manhunt for the robbers and recover the snatched rifles.

“Police efforts paid off when eight of the armed robbers, led by one Ife Olubaba, a boy to Godogodo, kingpin of South-West armed robbers, were arrested at various locations in Lagos and Ogun states.

“During the exchange of fire between the armed robbers and crack SARS operatives, one Taiye Agege was fatally wounded.”

She said all the arrested suspects confessed to have taken part in the Iju operation, where Policemen were fired. She said efforts were on to arrest the remaining gang members.

Education / Pregnant At 18, Best Graduating Student At 25 by daisyjay(f): 9:00am On Nov 05, 2013
Seven years after an unwanted pregnancy forced her to drop out of the University of Ilorin, Aishat Farooq emerges the best graduating student of the Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State

When Aishat Farooq gained admission into the University of Ilorin at 15, to study Zoology, little did she know that she was not going to be an alumnus of the institution. That was in 2003.

Despite the fact that she was a high flyer in her first two years in UNILORIN, the now 25-year-old indigene of Ilorin West-Local Government Area of Kwara State got distracted along the line. She played the campus love game and got a shocking result: she got pregnant.

It was in 2006 and in her third year. She was pregnant for a fellow student whom she had been dating. She was disappointed in herself and thought the whole world was crashing on her. Yet, she vowed not to terminate the pregnancy.

Although she wanted to continue her studies in the university, she became disillusioned and dropped out at 18. She sought consolation in trading.

But her father, Mr. Shehu Farooq, who believed that his daughter’s academic prowess should not be wasted, was determined to get her back on the academic track.

Today, Aishat has a different story to tell. On Saturday, she stood tall among her peers at the 5th convocation ceremony of Bells University, Ota, Ogun State, where she emerged the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.93.

“The rebel in me won,” she declared while giving the valedictory address on behalf of the 208 graduating students of the university.

“I hope my story will inspire at least one person to change his or her circumstance. I was pregnant at 18 and by 19 I was already a mother. I had disappointed my father who believed so much in me. He had such big dreams for me and feared the dreams would become unfulfilled,” she added.

Breaking the news of the pregnancy to her father, who was at the time based in the northern part of the country, was not easy. Aishat’s mother, Fatima, who stayed in Lagos with the family, did not break the “sad news” to the man until the lady was almost due. The mum feared her husband would be too angry.

Fatima narrated to our correspondent, “Looking back, we knew her to be very brilliant. But all of a sudden she got pregnant. Though her father and I were always discussing on the telephone, I hid it from him. Whenever he said he would be coming to Lagos to visit us, I would quickly chip it in that I would like to be the one to visit. So, I ensured I was the one always visiting him.

“That was how I managed the situation until the pregnancy was eight months. But even when we broke the news to him, he felt really bad. Although there was nothing he could do, he couldn’t go out for three days.”

Aishat studied Business Administration with specialisation in Human Resources Management, and received the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for the Overall Best Graduating Student with a cash reward of N50,000 and a plaque. She also won the College of Management Sciences Prize and Department of Business Administration Prize for the Best Graduating Student.

Speaking with our correspondent after she received the awards, Aishat, whose face beamed with smiles, expressed gratitude to her dad for not losing hope in her during her trying time.

She noted that the popularly-held notion that the child that goes astray belongs to the mother, while the good ones belong to the father, was not applicable in her situation as her father did not give up on her.

Asked why her dad had so much hoped in her, she stated that her history of academic excellence from childhood right to the university was a major driving force.

Aishat, who attended Nazareth Nursery and Primary School, Lagos; Penny International College, Lagos and Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja, said she bagged several academic awards while growing up and noted that she secured admission to UNILORIN the same year she completed her secondary education.

She noted, “I did exceptionally well and bagged awards in the schools I attended. I had the overall best result at the Senior Secondary School Certificate level at Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja. In fact in UNILORIN, I was on the first class grade in my first year but in 200 Level, I dropped to second class upper division because I had already started getting distracted by the boys.

“It just happened that things turned out the way it did. But here I am, a product of God’s unending mercies, unconditional love and grace – all coupled with the faith my dad had in me and my fierce determination.

“I’m a goal getter. I push myself hard. Even here (BELLSTECH) in spite of being a mother, I was pushing for the best despite the challenges. I wanted to make my dad proud again. Once you are determined, nothing is impossible. Nothing can stop you.”

She said her decision to study Business Administration as against the sciences, which she was studying in UNILORIN, was informed by her two-year experience in the world of business after she dropped out of university.

She explained that incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, however, informed her decision to attend a private university. “Age was no longer on my side and I wanted to do it fast. And my dad could afford it because he was a businessman,” she added.

Asked if she was involved in any relationship at the Bells, she explained that she was a popular “snob” on campus because the majority of male students were younger than her. Besides, she did not want to get distracted or disappoint her parents and herself again.

Aishat, who has been posted to Lagos State to observe the mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme, said, “If you ask around you will be told that I was a snob. My favourite spot was my room. I rarely went out of the room for social events. I went to mosque. However, when I contested for the president of my departmental association, Business Administration Students Association, the Nigerian system worked against me.

“I lost to my male opponent. Although I had plans to take some giant strides if I won, especially in the academic aspect for my fellow students, the fact that I was not the type of person who hangs out worked against me. I didn’t have a social life.”

She said she has no plans for marriage for now. She wants to pursue a master’s degree programme in Human Resources in the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. She added that she also plans to work in a corporate environment to garner experience and afterwards go back to the university to teach “as a way of giving back.”

The second child in a family of eight children, Aishat brought her six-year-old son, Damilola, to the convocation.

It was, however, learnt that the Edo State-born father of the boy has since got married to another woman.

She noted that her major challenge on
campus was the randomness of classes which denied her the opportunity of spending quality time with her son while her stay in the university lasted.

“We had visiting professors who came into the campus at anytime. Although we had schedules, many of them had a bit of flexible time. Sometimes on Sunday when I took permission to visit my child in Lagos, my classmates would call me up on the phone that there was going to be a class. Because attendance is very important, I had to rush down. This affected me a little,” she added.

Aishat’s father advised parents to give their children and wards the best of tutelage and close monitoring. He noted that he least expected the feat achieved by his daughter as he was at a time disturbed that “she could no longer make it.”

Asked if it was lack of adequate monitoring that made Aishat go astray at UNILORIN, he said, “Let’s just say that is how God wants it. You see, 70 per cent of the fault is on us the parents. Parents should give their children good supervision and tutelage. With this, they cannot derail. I thank God for her because it’s is not easy to have raised her from grass to grace.

“I screamed on the phone the day I learnt she was pregnant. I started asking questions: When, where and how. I burst into tears. But today, she is a new being. And I know the mistake will not repeat itself. My expectations for her are that she should fly higher and higher.”

Some other graduands who distinguished themselves were also recognised at the convocation ceremony.

Kolawole Lawal, who finished from the Department of Economics with a CGPA of 4.73, received the Olusegun Obasanjo’s Prize for being the best graduating student with outstanding academic performance and leadership qualities. Former President Obasanjo who is the Chief Promoter of the university, also attended the event.

Francis Sogunle, from the Department of Computer Science, who had a CGPA of 4.74, received the Chancellor’s Prize for excelling in external competitions of academic nature.

At the ceremony, 208 students were awarded first degrees with Aishat and 13 others being conferred with first class degrees, while 64 of them got second class upper degrees; 83 bagged second class lower; just as 43 were awarded third class degrees. Meanwhile four of the graduands finished with pass degrees.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Isaac Adeyemi, charged the graduates to be patriotic and dedicated to nation building.

“Our beloved country is currently going through a rather stressful period. All hands must be on deck to seek lasting solutions to militancy and insurgencies and disregard for the rule of law. This is the time to prove your worth as you can’t afford to fold your arms or sit on the fence,” he observed.

Education / 16-year-old Nigerian Girlnamed Among World's 50smartest Teens by daisyjay(f): 12:06am On Oct 30, 2013
A 16-year-old Nigerian Muslim girl
has made headlines when her name
emerged in the 'The World's 50 Smartest
Teenagers' list.

Saheela Ibraheem, who
is passionate about many things,
"especially" math and science, believes that if one is passionate about what they
do, they will succeed.

A little over a year ago, the girl who was
born to Nigerian parents in Edison, New
Jersey, the US, has been accepted into
Harvard University, becoming one of the
youngest students ever to attend that
school.

She had to choose from 13 other
prestigious colleges, including MIT, the
University of Pennsylvania, Cornell,
Brown, Princeton, Columbia, and the
University of Chicago, but eventually
listened to her 7-year-old brother's advice who also dreams of being
admitted to Harvard.

Saheela says, at the age of only five she
found out the key to success: knowing
what you love to learn as early as
possible.

Described by others as polite and
humble, the girl says her very supportive
Nigerian parents sometimes taught her
subjects the schools didn't offer.

The teen is also interested in languages,
and knows Yoruba, Arabic, Spanish, and
Latin, in addition to English. Offering a role model to her colleagues,

Saheela, who dons a hijab, is also into
sports, as she plays softball, soccer, and
the trombone.

She also sings in the school choir and
serves as president of the school's
investment club.

The promising girl plans to major in
either neurobiology or neuroscience, and
hopes to become a scientist in order to
study how the brain works. "I try my best in everything I do," Saheela
said, confirming that there is nothing
special about her brain. "Anyone who's
motivated can work wonders."

Despite her activities, she names her
family as her number one priority.

Politics / Meet The 5 Nigerian Womenthat Are More Powerful Thangoodluck Jonathan by daisyjay(f): 11:25pm On Oct 29, 2013
Since inception, President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has been accused of impunity, usually caused by decisions and actions of the President, including those of his ministers and close associates.

Most of the glaring cases of abuse of power including reckless spending of taxpayers’ money have been carried out by the women in Jonathan’s cabinet. These women have proven to be more powerful than the number one citizen of Nigeria because despite public outcries that greet some of their decisions, they go scot-free. Those who fall in this seemingly untouchable category are the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan; the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke; the Director- General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh; and the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah. These powerful women have some things in common. They are all from the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones. Four of them had their higher education in the United States and two of them are daughters of traditional rulers. Needless to say they occupy some of the most strategic and ‘lucrative’ positions in the Federal Government.
PATIENCE JONATHAN
In Nigeria’s history, Patience Jonathan is believed to be the most powerful First Lady in terms of the amount of influence she has over her husband and his cabinet. Mrs. Jonathan first gave a glimpse into the enormous power she wields in 2011 when she traversed the country, campaigning for her husband in a way that irked many Nigerians. Several calls by individuals and groups to the President to restrain his wife yielded no result.
Also, in June this year, in apparent violation of the electoral act, Mrs. Jonathan reportedly started campaigning for her husband ahead of the 2015 elections.
Another show of impunity by the President’s wife is the way she cripples any town or city she visits with her long motorcade, including bulletproof limousines and scores of armed policemen. She grounded Lagos in 2012 when she visited to say “thank you” to some women groups for their support in electing her husband. Despite the protest by several Nigerians, who felt that their right to move freely in their country was violated by the movement of an unelected individual, the President’s wife was never cautioned, at least not publicly. Instead, the Presidency rose to her defence, giving her the liberty to do more in other cities. Her visits and grounding of traffic in Port Harcourt and Warri were also greeted with wide condemnations. To show how powerful she is, Mrs. Jonathan publicly admitted making attempts to dictate to the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, a move that largely precipitated the ongoing political crisis in the state. In Aso Rock, where she resides with her husband, the fear of Mrs. Jonathan is the beginning of wisdom as she leaves no one in doubt that she is in charge. There is always a retinue of favour seekers waiting to see her daily. Mrs. Jonathan, a native of Bayelsa State, was born in Port Harcourt on October 25, 1957 and holds National Certificate of Education in Mathematics and Biology from the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, and a Bachelor of Education degree in biology and psychology from the University of Port Harcourt. NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA Right from when the negotiation to bring her from the World Bank started, it was obvious that Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala was bound to wield so much power in Jonathan’s government. With her position as the coordinating minister for the economy (a new position created for her) and Finance Minister, Okonjo-Iweala, who is currently 83rd on Forbes’ global list of powerful women, calls the shots as far as Nigeria’s economy is concerned. While doing that, she has called the bluff of many including state governors and the National Assembly without any consequence. The state governors, who have complained about the shabby way the minister treat them, have called for her removal while the Academic Staff Union of Universities has called her a ‘dictator.’ But no matter the protest, Okonjo- Iweala remains a darling of the President. The sacking of Mr. Shuaib Yushau as the Head, Media and Information Unit of the National Emergency Management Agency, after he wrote what was considered a critical article against Okonjo-Iweala, further showed that the minister was not to be messed with. The article entitled ‘Still on Okonjo- Iweala over Controversial Appointments’, published on March 6, called on the minister “to ensure that appointments into important positions should be done in credible and transparent manner that can withstand public scrutiny.” Similarly, Mr. Lawrence Ani, was reportedly suspended indefinitely from his job as Saturday Editor of Thisday Newspaper for publishing a story that cited data that indicated a drop in Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product under Okonjo-Iweala’s watch. In 2011, against the opinion of the majority of Nigerians, Okonjo-Iweala and the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, insisted on the removal of fuel subsidy, and literally ordered it on the outset of 2012, resulting in the Occupy Nigeria protest. Okonjo-Iweala, who also served as finance minister and foreign minister under President Olusegun Obansanjo and as a Managing Director at the World Bank, was born on June 13, 1954 to Professor Chukuka Okonjo, who is the Obi (traditional ruler) of Ogwashi-Uku. She graduated from Harvard University in 1977, and earned her Ph.D. in regional economic development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. She is married to Ikemba Iweala from Abia State. DIEZANI ALISON-MADUEKE Virtually all sections of the Nigerian society have called for the resignation of the Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, all to no avail. Most of those who sought her removal had cited several allegations of corrupt practices under her watch as reasons for their demand. After the revelation of massive fraud in the fuel subsidy administration to the tune of N1.7trn, many had thought that heads would roll, including that of Alison-Madueke, who supervised the rot. Some heads did roll, but not that of the queen of the Nigeria oil and gas industry. Till date, the Presidency has not queried or probed Diezani over allegations against her and the indictment of departments under her by several panels, including those headed by Nuhu Ribadu, Farouk Lawan, and Aigboje Aig- Imoukhuede as well as the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative. Diezani has also not explained to Nigeria, whom she was appointed to serve, what role she played in the massive corruption that led to the loss of huge amounts of public fund. Apart from the demands for the Alison- Madueke’s resignation and prosecution by civil society groups, who led the Occupy Nigeria protest, the House of Representatives also demanded her removal as minister. Despite this, the President did not suspend her, and gave no explanation for that. This shows how powerful she is. Alison-Madueke is the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria, and in October 2010 she became the first woman to head a country’s delegation at the annual OPEC conference. She was also the first female Minister of Transportation, and the first woman to be appointed to the board of Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria. Alison-Madueke was born on December 6, 1960 in Port Harcourt. She graduated from Howard University in 1992, with a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and returned to Nigeria to join Shell Petroleum Development Corporation. About 10 years later, she earned an MBA from Cambridge University and was appointed as the first female executive director of Shell Nigeria. In 1999, she got married to Admiral Alison Madueke (retd), one-time Chief of Naval Staff who was at different times military governor of Imo and Anambra states. STELLA ODUAH Not many are aware of the tremendous power of the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, in Jonathan’s government. For her role in Jonathan’s 2011 campaign, she was reportedly rewarded with a ministerial appointment to the aviation ministry, even though she had no prior training in the field of aviation. Many believe that the President feels indebted to her for her role as the Director of Finance and Administration of the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation and in the establishment of Neighbour-to-Neighbour outfit, which reportedly spent billions of naira on adverts and media propaganda in favour of Jonathan, especially while the Occupy Nigeria protest lasted. Considering this relationship with Jonathan, it should not be a surprise that Oduah’s response to critics after the Dana and Associated Airlines crashes reeked of arrogance. The latest revelation that she forced the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to buy her bulletproof vehicles has again elicited calls for her removal and prosecution but considering the way the President has treated public outcries against these powerful women, Oduah is likely to remain minister till the end of Jonathan’s administration. Princess Stella Oduah was born on January 5, 1962 to Igwe D.O. Oduah of Akili-Ozizor in Anambra State on January 5, 1962. She got her Bachelor’s degree in accounting and MBA from American universities. Oduah joined the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in 1983 and in 1992, she established a petroleum products marketing company, Sea Petroleum & Gas Company Limited. She was married to the former Minister for Works, Chris Ogiemwonyi. ARUNMA OTEH Through her battles, the Director-General of the Securities Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh, has sufficiently earned the name ‘Iron lady’ even beyond her official sphere of influence. When she clashed with the House of Representatives Committee on the Capital Market, it was the chairman of the committee, Mr. Herman Hembe, that got hurt. The committee had accused Oteh of fraud and misappropriation of funds. She fired back, accusing Hembe of demanding bribe from SEC. The SEC board suspended Oteh in order to investigate the findings of the lawmakers, who probed the capital market and indicted her. She immediately petitioned the President and Okonjo-Iweala. After two months, the President returned Oteh to her position, following the auditor’s report that said her offence amounted only to ‘administrative lapses.’ The directors and staff of the commission, who had protested Oteh’s alleged high-handedness, were advised to calm down and obey their boss. On the other hand, Hembe was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and also stepped down as chairman of the committee. The crisis led to an intense battle between President Jonathan and the House of Representatives. The House demanded the sacking of Oteh but Jonathan refused. The passage of the 2013 budget was delayed because of the fight. Eventually, the lawmakers insisted on zero budget for SEC to force the President’s hand, but he did not budge. Calls for her removal by civil society groups also fell on deaf ears. Oteh, who is an indigene of Abia State, is also a British citizen. She graduated with first-class degree in computer sciences from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka and earned her MBA from Harvard Business School. Source : Punch
