Eighteen people have been killed, including Ukraine's interior affairs minister, after a helicopter crashed beside a kindergarten in an eastern suburb of the capital Kyiv.

Three children were among the dead and 15 more are being treated in hospital.

The minister, Denys Monastyrsky, was with eight others in the helicopter.

His first deputy minister and the state secretary also died, officials said, when the helicopter came down in the suburb of Brovary.

National police chief Ihor Klymenko wrote on Facebook that the helicopter belonged to Ukraine's state emergency service.

The head of Kyiv's regional military administration, Oleksiy Kuleba, said the tragedy in Brovary had left 29 hurt as well as 18 dead.

After the crash a fire broke out close to the kindergarten and children and staff were moved from the building. Wreckage from the helicopter was visible outside a burning building.

It was dark and foggy at the time of the crash and initial reports suggest the helicopter hit the kindergarten before crashing close to a residential building.

Two other senior figures from the interior ministry were killed alongside Mr Monastyrsky. Yevhen Yenin was first deputy minister while Yurii Lubkovich was state secretary.

The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the release of the Pankshin Divisional Police Officer, Nwapi Augustus, four days after he was abducted.

The kidnapped police officer was shot in his hotel room in Pankshin by gunmen before they took him to an unknown destination.

Confirming his release in a statement on Sunday, the spokesman for the state, Alfred Alabo, said, “Following the kidnap of SP Nwapi Larrycarr Augustus on January 1, 2023, around 7.30pm by unidentified gunmen to an unknown destination in Pankshin LGA, the Plateau State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies and hunters in the area, swung in on a rescue mission and eventually unshackled and freed the officer from his captors.

“The officer has been taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment and will soon be reunited with his family.

“In view of the ugly incident, the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Bartholomew N. Onyeka, assures citizens of the state that the perpetrators will be fished out and arrested to face justice as the command will leave no stone unturned in the fight against kidnapping in the state.”

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pankshin Division, Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, has been kidnapped by gunmen, The PUNCH learnt on Thursday.

A policeman in the council area confirmed the development to The PUNCH in Jos, Thursday night.

According to him, the DPO, whose name is yet to be known, was kidnapped by the gunmen after they shot him in his hotel room in the council area.
The source said, “The DPO was just posted to Pankshin about three days ago. He was staying in a hotel in Pankshin and was in that hotel when the gunmen came and shot him before taking him away. Since then, we have not seen him.”

As of the time of filing this report, the Police Public Relations Officer in Plateau State, DSP Alfred Alabo, had yet to respond to calls made to him.

What I & the West don't understand is, why Russia has chosen to play it gently. Imagine choosing to use over 70-hours to Kill somebody rather than end it all within minutes.
