European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Lionel Messi Investigated For Fraud In Spain by dammybravo(m): 3:17pm On Jun 12, 2013
Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi and his father are being investigated in Spain for allegedly defrauding the state of more than 4m euros (£3.4m).

The 25-year-old Argentina forward and his father, Jorge Horacio, are suspected of filing fraudulent tax returns for 2007-09, officials say.

The World Player of the Year has so far made no comment on the allegation.

His net annual salary at Barcelona is said to be 16m euros, making him one of the world's highest-paid athletes.

On Wednesday, a complaint signed by prosecutor Raquel Amado was filed at the courthouse in Gava - the affluent Barcelona district where Messi lives.

Judges at the courthouse must accept the complaint before the suspects can be charged, reports say.

Messi and his father are suspected of using companies abroad - in Belize and Uruguay - to sell the rights to use the footballer's image.

The accusation is that by using companies based outside Spain where he lives and plays club football, Messi and his father avoided paying more than 4m euros in tax...

He wrote on his Facebook page: "We have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advices of our tax consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation."

The investigation comes as the Spanish authorities step up their efforts to clamp down on tax fraud, as the government tries to balance its budget during a continuing economic crisis,

When you want to define greatness, longetivity counts a lot and how well you stood up to the competition around you, even when you are off of your peak, that greatness never leaves you...
When one have to compare two teams, players or any entity in sports, the very first thing that is gonna put them ahead is how they/he have been on top notch, surpassing records in any circumstances, not against one/few teams/players but against almost everyone in that sport..
Rafael Nadal is a great player but not the greatest, he is still under the shadows of sampras and Federer

Nadal becomes the first man to win same major 8 different times...
Sports / Rafael Nadal Wins Eighth French Open Title by dammybravo(m): 4:30pm On Jun 09, 2013

Nadal clinched his 8th clay title out of 12 grand slams title, did so by defeating fellow Spaniard 6-3 6-2 6-3 in straight sets, becoming the first man to win same major 8 different times...
Nadal has been pretty impressive after his comeback from injury, making 9finals in 9 tournaments and winning 7 out of 9, he is now 2 grand slams shy away from pete sampras 14 titles, and obviously the favorite for the two remaining grand slams of the year, which is wimbledon and Us Open...

The King of Clay reigns again.

Rafael Nadal won his eighth French Open with a straight-sets victory over David Ferrer on Sunday, giving him the record for the most wins at the event. Chris Evert was victorious seven times at Roland Garros.

Neither player appeared comfortable in the early going, but Ferrer won the first handful of games despite some misplays. Nadal quickly settled in, though, and took the first set 6-3. His momentum carried him to a 6-2 win in the second set. Nadal prevailed in the third set 6-3.

"That's more than I even can dream about," Nadal said after the match of his eighth title."He's playing unvelivable tennis," Ferrer said of Nadal after the match. He added, "I need to improve my volley. I need to finish the points from the net, and today, I didn't do it."

Nadal won his first French Open in 2005, then successfully defended his title through 2009, when he lost to Robin Soderling in the fourth round. Nadal regained the title in 2010 and kept it through this year. With his 12th grand slam singles title, he trails Roger Federer, who has 17. Margaret Court holds the record for the most wins at a single grand slam event. She won the Australian Open 11 times from 1960-73.

I think we should be talking about the second greatest player of all time, cos without doubt Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova are the greatest of all time, we could say Graf is a bit ahead, winning all majors at least four times, how the hell can you beat someone in a french open final in just 32 minutes that's Graf for you, IMMENSE..Serena has got a long way to match the two

Foreign Affairs / Oscar Pistorius' Murder Case Postponed by dammybravo(m): 8:50am On Jun 04, 2013
South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has appeared in court for the first time since he was freed on bail over the killing of his girlfriend.

After a brief hearing in Pretoria, the magistrate agreed to a request from the prosecution to postpone the hearing until August.

Mr Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp through the bathroom door of his house in Pretoria on 14 February.

He denies committing murder, saying he mistook her for an intruder.
'Disgusted'

Mr Pistorius wore a grey suit and appeared composed as he arrived at court to meet a barrage of photographers and journalists. He was surrounded by his family and friends for the hearing.

He spoke only once, confirming "Yes, Your Honour" when asked if he understood the magistrate's comments.

The BBC's Andrew Harding, who was in court, said this court appearance was very different to the last time when Mr Pistorius sobbed uncontrollably and was visibly emotional in the days following the killing.

The prosecution asked for the case to be postponed until 19 August so it could continue preparing its ballistics and forensics evidence. The adjournment was not opposed by the defence.

Our correspondent says it is likely that, once the prosecution presents its evidence in August, the defence will seek a delay so it can go through the documentation - meaning a trial is unlikely to start before next year.
