Sports / The Best-paid Bench Warmers In Sports by dammybravo(m): 8:09pm On Jun 24, 2013
From the bright lights between the lines to the solitude of the bench or the rehab facility, things can change quickly. Between 2005 and 2009, Philadelphia Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley claimed a rightful spot among baseball’s top players.  Hitting third in the lineup – that sweet spot typically reserved for a team’s top hitter – Utley averaged 29 homers and 101 RBI for the perennially contending (and twice National League champion) Phils. His OPS never fell below .905 over that stretch; his batting average never below .282.
Along the way came a seven-year, $85 million contract extension, signed before the 2007 season. The Hall of Fame was surely beckoning.
But then, the unfortunate side of sports: injuries. Torn thumb ligaments. The right knee, then the left knee. And this season, the body part that no one ever heard of a decade ago that every player in the league now seems to strain at least once a year: the oblique. Utley’s recent month on the disabled list is only the latest in a series of bumps, bruises and tears that have kept him out of more than 200 games since the beginning of the 2010 season, all while collecting some $60 million. So as much as we love him, there’s little choice but to declare Utley as sports’ best-paid bench warmer.
He beats out the Miami Heat’s Rashard Lewis, who got $13.7 million (most of it from a buyout of his previous deal before Miami nabbed him for the veteran minimum) to start nine games in 2012-13, and the Charlotte Bobcats’ Ben Gordon, a former big scorer in Chicago who now makes $12.4 million to come off the bench for 20 minutes a game.
We all know that in the world of big-time sports, a big contract signed by a player at his peak doesn’t always pay off for his team down the road. Sometimes it’s age, sometimes it’s injury, sometimes it’s just a basic failure to consistently replicate your best seasons.  The bulk of the 2013 list hails from the NBA, where scorers have long been overvalued under a salary cap system that spreads a big chunk of payroll to a few players.  Don’t be surprised if that changes soon, as baseball sabremetric principals continue to creep into the hoops world.
Note that when it comes to injuries, we’re sympathetic. A consistent performer who’s been recently sidelined by a sudden torn up knee or broken ankle gets a pass. But perpetual injuries are a different story – being injury prone affects your value. At some point you have to show that you can stay on the field. Utley, like fellow second baseman Brian Roberts in Baltimore ( eighth on our list with a $10 million salary), just hasn’t done that in recent years. They’d probably prefer to be playing than getting paid to rehab. Maybe next year.

Sports / Rafael Nadal Knocked-out Of Wimbledon 2013 In 1st Round Match by dammybravo(m): 6:06pm On Jun 24, 2013
Steve darci stuns Rafael Nadal 7-6(4) 7-6(cool 6-4 Wimbeldon to become first player to beat Rafa in 1st-Round of a major, ending nadal's 22-match unbeaten streak

For the second consecutive year, Rafael Nadal made a shockingly early exit at Wimbledon.

When he was knocked out in the second round a year ago, Nadal was battling a knee injury and admitted this week that he was “not yet ready to play.”

On Monday, the first day of play at Wimbledon, he was upset again, this time in the first round as he appeared again to be battling some sort of leg injury. The fifth-seeded Nadal lost in the first round of a major for the first time in his career, falling to Steve Darcis. An unseeded player from Belgium, Darcis won 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-cool, 6-4.

Nadal refused to discuss whether he was hurt, saying it was difficult to adapt his game to grass with little time to prepare after winning the French Open two weeks ago.

“It’s not the day to talk about these kinds of things,” he said in a press conference after the match. “I am confident I will be ready for the next tournament. I played much more than what I dreamed … after the injury, so that’s fantastic and a very positive thing for me.”

Even Darcis admitted his upset was stunning. “I think the same,” he joked in a BBC interview. “Nobody was expecting my win today. … Rafael didn’t play his best tennis today and I knew the first match on grass is always difficult. For me it’s a big win. I tried to do what I like to do: come to the net as soon as I can and not play too far from the baseline.”

Darcis did not, he said, try to capitalize on Nadal’s increasing problems with his knee. “If you start to focus on him, it’s tougher. I tried to focus on myself and what I like to do.”

Even if he chose not to speak about it, Nadal never appeared comfortable in the match and, as it progressed, was trying to avoid putting weight on his left leg.

Foreign Affairs / Ex-pm Of Italy Silvio Berlusconi Found Guilty And Could Face 7-year Jail Term by dammybravo(m): 5:59pm On Jun 24, 2013
An Italian court is expected to rule whether ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi paid for sex with an underage prostitute and abused his office as prime minister.

Prosecutors at the trial in Milan are demanding a six-year sentence and a lifetime ban from public office.

The 76-year-old media tycoon denies all the allegations.

Mr Berlusconi, who is already embroiled in several court cases, was given a four-year sentence for tax fraud in October 2012.

Neither Karima El-Mahroug nor Mr Berlusconi are expected in court for the verdict
He lost an appeal to overturn the conviction last week.

A court convened in Milan on Monday morning, and was expected to deliver its verdict.

The judgement could have major political repercussions for Italy, analysts say.

They say a guilty ruling could weaken current Prime Minister Enrico Letta's coalition government, which depends on the support of Mr Berlusconi's centre-right party, People of Freedom (PdL).

'Favour to Mubarak'

The prosecution in Milan says that women invited to Mr Berlusconi's private residence for so-called "bunga-bunga" party evenings were part of a prostitution system set up for his personal sexual satisfaction.

The allegations focus specifically on his relationship with Moroccan girl Karima El Mahroug, known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer", whom he is accused of paying for sex in 2010. She was 17 at the time.

Both she and Mr Berlusconi have denied the allegations.

Ms El Mahroug says she did receive 7,000 euros (£5,900), but it was as a gift after a party.

She also told a separate trial last month that she had lied to investigators when she said she had bathed naked during parties held at the former prime minister's villa at Arcore, north-east of Milan.

However, Prosecutor Ilda Boccassini told the Berlusconi trial during closing arguments last month that the young woman had lied when she denied having had sex with the former prime minister.

She said Ms Mahroug had received more than 4.5m euros (£3.8m) from Mr Berlusconi between October and December 2010.

Mr Berlusconi is also charged with abusing his power of office after calling a police station to press for the release of Ms Mahroug from custody when she was arrested in Milan in a separate petty theft case.

He has acknowledged the phone-call but says it was made as a favour to former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, whose granddaughter he believed Ms Mahroug to be.

He told a TV programme about the "bunga-bunga" broadcast on one of his Mediaset channels that he had "absolutely never had intercourse with Ruby".

Prosecutors, whom Mr Berlusconi accuses of waging a politicised campaign against him, want him to serve a one-year jail term on the charge of paying for sex with an underage prostitute and five years for abuse of office.

Sports / Lionel Messi To Appear In Court Over Fraud Allegation by dammybravo(m): 7:04pm On Jun 20, 2013
A Spanish judge has summoned Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi to appear in court on 17 September over tax fraud allegations.

The 25-year-old Argentine, who has four times been named World Player of the Year, and his father are accused of defrauding the Spanish authorities of more than 4m euros (£3.4m).

They are suspected of using companies abroad - in Belize and Uruguay - to sell the rights to use Messi's image.

They both deny the allegations.

Messi's net salary from Barcelona is said to be about 16m euros a year, making him one of the world's most highly-paid sportspeople.

He has also signed multi-million-dollar endorsements with commercial sponsors around the world.

The player and his father, Jorge, are accused of three times defrauding the Spanish state of taxes.

The income related to his image rights included contracts with Banco Sabadell, Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Proctor and Gamble and the Kuwait Food Company.

If he is convicted, Messi could face up to six years in prison and a big fine, according to Spain's Efe news agency.

He wrote on his Facebook page, after the allegations became known last week: "We have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations."

Messi's achievements on the field have made him one of the most marketable in the business.

He came from a modest background and has overcome a serious health issue, joining Barcelona as a 13-year-old in 2000 and making his first-team debut only three years later.

He was ranked 10th among Forbes' list of sports stars' incomes this month.

The president of Barcelona FC, Sandro Rosell, has said the club has no doubt that the superstar is innocent of tax avoidance.

Messi is due to play a prominent role in the Adidas World Cup marketing campaign.

Adidas CEO Herbert Hainer told reporters that the company "will continue to work with Lionel. He's the best football player in the world and we are happy that we have him".

But the allegations are a big blow to the prestige of Messi, who has long been seen as a more humble figure than most top-class footballers.

Wimbledon 2013 will be the first Grand Slam to feature Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal since last year’s Wimbledon tournament. Nadal pulled out of the 2012 US Open and 2013 Australian Open with an injury, as did Andy Murray at Roland Garros 2013.

Thirty-two of the previous 33 Majors (men’s singles) have been won by one of the four aforementioned, the lone exception being the 2009 US Open, which was won by Juan Martín Del Potro.

There have been 25 Grand Slam tournaments in which all four of these players have appeared. In 24 of those, one of them won. In 16 of those 25, including the last eight, the Big 4 provided both finalists. In four of the 25, all four reached the semifinals.

They are not the top 4 according to the ATP world ranking. Nadal, who is 43-2 and has won seven tournaments since returning to action in February, is ranked fifth in the world and unless he receives a preferential treatment in the seeding procedure, he will possibly run into Federer, Djokovic, Murray or world number four David Ferrer in the quarterfinals. Ferrer has made it past the fourth round only once in 10 previous appearances and has never won a Grand Slam in 42 attempts.

Science/Technology / Facebook Finally Adds Twitter-like Hashtags by dammybravo(m): 12:20am On Jun 13, 2013
Facebook announced today that it is allowing users to create and click on hashtags, “similar to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest.” A hashtag, which is simply a word preceded by a pound or hash symbol (#) is a way to participate in a public discussion about a topic and allow others to click on or search for the hashtag to find your content. Google+ also hashtags.
Access depends on privacy settings
As with all posts on Facebook, someone’s ability to see what you post (even if you add a hashtag) depends on the who you’ve agreed to share the post with.  So, if you share a post only with friends, then only they will see it If you wish it to be seen by anyone you should click on the little icon below the post and select Public.
Hashtags are clickable and searchable.  I tested it by searching for #NSA and, as I expected, I immediately found posts from friends and even strangers (who had posted to the public) about Natonal Security Agency surveillance tactics.
According to Facebook you can now:
Search for a specific hashtag from your search bar. For example, #NBAFinals.
Click on hashtags that originate on other services, such as Instagram.
Compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results.

Implications for sharing
Although this is a little change, it has big implications because, with hashtags, Facebook pages can become part of broader conversations.  While it’s certainly possible to use hashtags mainly to share stories among your friends, they encourage users to share more broadly as is customary on Twitter (where the vast majority of users post to the public). One difference between Facebook and Twitter is that Facebook allows you to determine the audience for each post each time you post so it’s pretty easy to have some posts shared with the public and others shared only with friends or friends of friends.
