Health / Drug (substance) Abuse by dammybravo(m): 3:32pm On Jul 10, 2015
This can be defined as a maladaptive pattern of continued use of drug be it legal or illicit, despite knowledge of having a persistent social, occupational, psychological or physical problem that is caused by the use (or recurrent use) in situations in which it is physically hazardous.

It is so prevalent around the world that it is one of the leading causes of ill-health and death in the populace. Well-respected figures around the world have fallen victim to the point of death or yet to get over it e.g Whitney Houston, Majek Fashek.

News about these are surely not pleasing to the ears or sight. Some show no iota of ever been in it because they have overcome e.g Oprah Winfrey, Samuel Jackson, Eminem.
The common substances of abuse include alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, heroin, cannabis, tramadol, codeine, morphine, diazepam, turpentine, nail polish, gloss paints, oh yes! Gloss paints.(It is instructive to say that some of these substances are beneficial in moderate quantity e.g alcohol is cardioprotective;tramadol is a painkiller).
Many individuals get indocrinated obviously during adolescence due to peer pressure influence. Other luring factors are depression, loneliness, need to get off protracted problems, genetic factor(with social influences).

Effects of drug abuse cannot be overemphasized, ranging from addiction to criminal tendencies~burglary/armed robbery, rape, homicide. Others are automobile accidents, loss of man-hours from work, withdrawal syndrome.

Ways to curbing this social menace involve: continued enlightenement programmes all over media channels; closer parent-children interaction; stiffer penalties to serve as deterrrents; establishment of drug rehabilitation centres. Spread the news!

Sports / Lionel Messi Considering Quitting The Argentina National Team Amidst Criticism by dammybravo(m): 6:46pm On Jul 07, 2015
Reports gathered indicates, Lionel Messi is considering taking a break from the Argentina national team, because he’s tired of the constant criticism being aimed his way by compatriots.

Messi was the only player to score in the penalty shoot-out against Chile at the Copa America on saturday, which Argentina lost 4-1 on penalties.

He’s been so hurt by the personal attacks aimed at him in recent days that he’s considering taking a break away from Argentina duty.

Messi was one of the scapegoats for his country’s defeat to Chile in the Copa America final last Saturday.

He was accused of lacking energy and passion, and Ole didn’t hold back either. Their editorial made headlines because it said Messi should be stripped of the armband.

Messi was subject to criticism after a similarly poor performance in the World Cup final defeat to Germany last year.

His relationship with Argentina fans has always been bizarrely testy because they feel he should be able to replicate his Barcelona performances.

No matter what their reasons are for launching abuse at Messi, it’s invalid to personally attack him. The likely scene is that he’ll sit out a couple of World Cup qualifiers, but if he finds he’s not missing international duty then Argentina fans will curse their stupidity.

Family / World Oldest Human Celebrates Her 116th Birthday by dammybravo(m): 9:51pm On Jul 06, 2015
World oldest human, Mushatt Jones celebrates her 116th birthday on Monday.

The new Yorker was a teenager during World War I and her life spans three centuries.

Guinness World Records announced the occasion and released photographs of Jones, dressed smartly in a white jacket, black dress and matching hat, being presented with a framed certificate.

The former live-in housekeeper, known as “T” to her 100 nieces and nephews, was born on July 6, 1899. She became the record holder at the age of 115 years and 346 days as of June 17, Guinness said.

She was to celebrate her birthday with two parties with family on Monday and a larger gathering on Tuesday at her Brooklyn public housing community with friends, neighbors and officials.

Jones, an African American, was born in Alabama to a father who picked cotton to support his wife and 10 children. She was accepted into college, but her parents could not afford the tuition.

So in 1922 she left for New Jersey, and then moved to New York a year later to work as a live-in housekeeper and nanny.

“Sleep!” she told Guinness World Records when asked for the secret of her longevity. She is blind and hard of hearing, but is not bed-bound and “only takes two medications a day,”

In 2005, when she celebrated her 106th birthday, she told New York’s housing authority: “I never drink or smoke.”

“I surround myself with love and positive energy. That’s the key to long life and happiness,” she was quoted as saying.

The record for the oldest person to ever live is held by Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days.

Sports / Barcelona Signs Arda Ruran by dammybravo(m): 9:14pm On Jul 06, 2015
Barcelona have completed a €41 million deal to bring Atletico Madrid star Arda Turan to Camp Nou this summer.

The Turkey international, 28, confirmed earlier this summer that he would not be extending his stay with the 2013-14 Liga champions and had been linked with a number of Europe’s top clubs.

However, Barca emerged as clear favourites for his signature in recent days and have now announced his arrival for an initial fee of €34m, with €7m to come by way of add-ons.

Presidential candidate Josep Maria Bartomeu had made it clear he planned to bring the versatile winger to Camp Nou should he win this month’s election, claiming head coach Luis Enrique asked for his signing

However, Barca retain the option of selling the player back to Atletico for a €4.1m loss before July 20 should the new president – set to be elected 48 hours earlier – not wish to sanction his arrival.

Foreign Affairs / Greece Finance Minister Resigns Amidst Financial Troubles by dammybravo(m): 7:44am On Jul 06, 2015
Greece’s finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis has surprisingly resigned from office after taking a strong stand in demanding that creditors write off some of his country’s debts.

The finance minister was a major player in rallying votes for a resounding “no” on a referendum on Sunday that asked Greeks whether they were willing to accept an arrangement with creditors that would require considerable further strictness, such as pension cuts. Mr. Varoufakis had threatened last week to resign if a “yes” vote passed, and his decision to resign after he and his allies prevailed in the referendum was surprising.

Mr. Varoufakis said in a statement on his website that he was resigning because Greece’s creditors had made it clear that they did not want to negotiate any further with him. “Soon after the announcement of the referendum results, I was made aware of a certain preference by some Eurogroup participants, and assorted ‘partners,’ for my … ‘absence’ from its meetings; an idea that the prime minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement. For this reason I am leaving the Ministry of Finance today.”

He called for the prompt conclusion of “an agreement that involves debt restructuring, less austerity, redistribution in favor of the needy, and real reforms.”

He included in his announcement a Parthian shot at his interlocutors in the debt negotiations, saying, “And I shall wear the creditors’ loathing with pride.”

Sports / WWC 2015 FINAL: USA Mauled Japan 5-2 To Win Third World Cup Title by dammybravo(m): 6:01am On Jul 06, 2015
USA mauled Japan 5-2 in the Women World Cup final to become the first nation to win the trophy three times.

Carli Lloyd scored a hattrick, to be the first player to ever do so in a world cup final, as she inspired the United States to a 5-2 demolition of defending champions Japan on Sunday.

The United States, have won the trophy in 1991 and 1999, and made it three in sunday's demolition after avenging their loss to Japan on penalties in the 2011 final.

Lloyd, 32, scored a 13-minute hattrick opening with her first after just three minutes on the pitch at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium with the second coming two minutes later, and her third after 16 minutes.

USA Coach, Jill Ellis said her only thought after the early goal-fest was: “Pinch me, wake me up!”

“We’d talked about starting fast, and I just knew that the players could deliver.

“These players were born for the big moments,” she added. “I envisaged us winning the trophy. I think five (goals) is a dream come true.”

It was the third meeting between the two teams in a major championship with the Americans winning the Olympic gold ahead of Japan in 2012, when Lloyd scored both goals in a 2-1 win.

Japan coach Norio Sasaki said he had tried to warn his japanese players of midfielder Lloyd, who was playing up front alongside Alex Morgan, but his shouts were drowned out by the crowd.

“I tried to tell them but they couldn’t hear me,” he said. “Miss Lloyd, she always does this to us. In London she scored two and here she scored three.

“We’re really embarrassed, but we really respect and admire her, she deserves the golden ball.”

US star Abby Wambach was handed the captain armband as she came on, in the last ten minutes.

“I wanted her to put the armband on because she’s done so much for our team. It’s her last World Cup and she’s a legend,” said Lloyd.

Health / (SICKLE CELL AWARENESS) In Celebration Of The World Sickle-cell Anaemia Day (jun by dammybravo(m): 12:07pm On Jul 05, 2015
Exactly two fridays ago, the world celebrated Sickle Cell Anaemia (SCA).
It is an hereditary blood disorder in which the normal spherical red cells in the blood are turned sickle-shaped(or crescent) in the presence of some untoward factors, thereby, limiting their mobility as well as ability to transport oxygen through blood vessels to different body organs and also reduced blood level (anaemia) with its attendant effects.
SCA occurs when a person inherits two abnormal copies of the haemoglobin gene, one from each parent(Hb SS). A person with a single abnormal copy does not experience symptoms and is said to have sickle cell trait. Such people are referred to as carriers.
SCA is predominant in the tropical regions of sub-saharan Africa, Middle East, Miditerranean, India. The disease is responsible for sizeable proportion of morbidity and mortality from infancy to adolescence.
The afore-mentioned untoward factors include dehydration, infection, acidosis, hypoxia (reduced oxygen level) which cause sickling, culminating in the popular “sickle-cell crises”.
Earliest symptoms in a child occur at the age of six months (because a different haemoglobin type from fetal life had predominated before) with swollen hands/wrists, pale look, persistent cries(indicating pain), fever etc.
Tit-bits to living a relatively reduced crisis life are regular water intake, avoiding infections(bacterial or malaria), ensuring regular warm ambience, daily use of folic acid and proguanil.
Cure is only by bone marrow transplant, practised only in climes with well-developed healthcare system. However,it can be palliatively managed to stem the frequency of crisis in an individual.
Lastly, best way to curb SCA increase is for individuals in relationships to seek genetic counselling which will deter carriers to end up as couples that will bring forth SCA offsprings. Be sickle-cell conscious!

Crime / A Girl Who Escaped From Boko Haram Tells Her Story by dammybravo(m): 12:00pm On Jul 05, 2015
A girl named Miriam, who was kidnapped by the Boko Haram sect, tells her story of how she was forced to marry a fighter and then raped repeatedly..

She was held in captivity by Boko Haram for six months last year. She was forced to marry one of their fighters, who then raped her repeatedly. She is now pregnant with his child.

She confessed how her community has rejected her since she came out of captivity expecting a child.

“I really hope it is a girl. I would love her more than any boy. A boy would always be known as the son of Boko Haram.” she said.

Last year, Boko Haram attacked and took over her village. She was taken to a house and kept in a small room with about 40 other women. At first she resisted any marriage, but eventually agreed after four men were brought out in front of her and had their throats slit. “This will happen to any girl who refuses to marry,” the militants had told her.

After six months, and one failed escape, Miriam saw another chance to run away. The man she’d been forced to marry had left her alone, and she seized her moment. She ran and ran and ran and she didn’t look back until she was home.

“The men in my family are dead,” she told me – killed by Boko Haram. “I am just alone with my mum.”

“God will avenge me,” she said. “There’s nothing more I can say.

Sports / Usain Bolt To Retire After Rio 2016 Olympics by dammybravo(m): 3:57pm On Sep 04, 2013
Usain Bolt plans to retire after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Bolt said Wednesday he wants to win more gold in Rio, set another world record in the 200 meters next year, and perhaps win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

"So far, (it) is after the Olympics in Rio," Bolt said of his retirement plans. "I think if I am in great shape, I'll go there and do what I have to do. I think it will be a good time to retire on top."

Winning another three golds in Moscow last month made him the most decorated athlete in world championship history with eight gold and two silvers. He has six gold medals from the Olympics.

"If I want to be among the greats of (Muhammad) Ali and Pele and all these guys, I have to continue dominating until I retire," Bolt said ahead of his final race this season in the 100 at Friday's Van Damme Memorial.

Bolt won the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and at last year's London Games. He won the same triple at the 2009 worlds before repeating that feat in Moscow last month.

At 27, Bolt has the experience to know that a lax season midway between Olympics can hurt him. In 2010, a soft entry into the year and subsequent injury cost him almost a full season.

"I kind of didn't do much in the offseason and then got injured and had to start from scratch. So this season, I will not make that mistake again," Bolt said.

Like 2010, next season has no major championships, but Bolt is thinking of new goals for 2014.

He already owns the 100 and 200 world records and shares the 4x100 with his Jamaican teammates. He acknowledges the 100 record of 9.58 seconds will be extremely tough to better, but he hopes to improve on the 19.19 he ran in the 200 in Berlin four years ago.

"I have learned, I have mastered the art of running the turn," Bolt said of the 200. "So if I can stay injury free and be in good shape, then it is possible for me to definitely go after the world record."

As a Jamaican, Bolt can compete in the Commonwealth Games, too, something he has yet to do. Next year, the event will be held in Glasgow, Scotland.

"I have never been to Commonwealths and so it is always good to add to your collection of gold medals," Bolt said.
